SMG's Romantic Comedy finally getting made. The writer of "Son of the Mask" is now taking on the comedy, and says filming will begin later this year with SMG and perhaps one of the Wilson brothers.

It's at the bottom 1/3 of the column.

Oh... goodie... the writer of "Son of the Mask". I'm sorry if I'm less then ecstatic. But, still, some part of me wants this movie to be good cause it sounds like an interesting concept and then of course Sarah.
The writer of "Son of the Mask"
OMG! Please no!

I thought it was a Kevin Williamson script :s
I'm not entirely convinced. This film has been kicking around in pre-production for a number of years and SMG was first linked to it at least two years ago, probably longer than that.

The quote attributed to Lance Khazei seem slightly odd. Could he possibly have named more people he really wanted to be in the film before actually naming the one person who has allegedly signed up to do it? The reference to Freddie Prinze Jr makes me even more suspicious, because it's too easy.

This might be a done deal and the film really is going into production later this year, but at this stage I am less than convinced this report can be trusted.
You know Hitchcock was once asked what he thought the 3 most important elements of a movie were. He said 'The script, the script and the script.' I tend to agree. Though good scripts can be screwed up beyond all recognition into horrible movies, no good movie ever came from a bad script.

So in that light, words like 'From the writer of Son of the Mask' is simply not something that breeds confidence. Sort of like 'Fantastic Four: by the director of Barber Shop'...
Hm..I think one of the first excuses actors give when trying to distance themselves from a bad movie sort of goes.."Well, I couldn't do much with the script, but as I was under contract..."

That being said, I agree with EdDantes. Let us hope that the script is very good, whoever writes it.
LOL EdDantes!

I don't believe this movie will have SMG in it until I hear it from her fansite.
Really doubting the validity of any of this, so... Not worrying.
Would really be a surprise if this happened, sounds like someone is trying to resurrect the dead and as we know that is always a bad idea.
A lot of people seems to like the idea of SMG in a romantic comedy, I think that after 'Simply Irresistible' she should stay away from them unless there is something really special with the material, this sure does not sound like it.
I just discovered a very good SMG interview - unfortunately in german - published last thursday. As clumsily re-translated by me, she states:

If one more person today asks me "why don't you do a romantic comedy?", then... The truth is: I think these are horrible cliches, I don't know how it is supposed to be interesting to watch a woman having a crush on a guy and do stupid, corny things to get his attention. Now and then there is a movie like "Pretty Woman", where a woman is able to look after herself, or "Bridget Jones", where she at least comes across as a complex individual, but those are few.
The movie of Romantic Comedy (although it has changed many times) was originally a parody of Romantic Comedies and not a Romantic Comedy persay, akin to Scary Movie. The last time though it was suppose to be about a guy trying to win the girl by using the stuff he saw in Romantic comedies. I don't know how this guy plans to write it. I think if he goes the parody route SMG might still be interested in it, other wise she may pull out, but contractually she is still attached to the movie from all reports, of course it's been so long she may have forgotten about it. He needs to do something to redeem himself after being part of the Jamie Kennedy Hoax 'Son of the Mask'.
RavenU, even if it was intended to contain parodies on romantic comedies I still read the film as being primarily a romantic comedy.
It doesn't make sense to me that she would still be contractually attched to a project that have been dormant for 2-3 years, a lot of renegotiations should take place first.
Doubt the any studios or actors are going to want to touch this one until the stench of 'Son of the Mask' have receded.
A contract is still in effect until both parties agreed to be released from said project or unless there is a time limit in the actual contract - it is not unusual for an actor to be contracted to a role for years seeing how long it takes for some films to get made - even if it is dormant. There may be some renegosiation possible depending on the contract she originally signed, or else she may have to go into breach and then she may be sued. Like Kim Bassinger was sued into bankrupcy years ago for wanting out of her Boxing Helena contract which she was contracted to for 5 years prior to the film getting made, so it happens. It's suppose to be a comedic parody of Romantic Comedies, but with that title yeah kinda of a given that it would have romantic comedic overtones. New Line will steer clear more than likely, but other studios tend to have short memories depending on whse attached to the project acting wise.

Thanks for the explanation RavenU.
Would have expected canny agents to have time limits on contracts, circumstances do change, but maybe they dont always have that. If SMG actually does this I sure hope she is well paid cause this sounds like a high risk to flop, but with a good script, the right male lead and a good director maybe it could turn out well for those that like this kind of thing.
RavenU, it's quite common for actors, especialy where they are a star and the 'draw' for a movies finance, to have a clause in the contract saying they can leave if there are any major changes. So if you signed for Million Dollar Baby with Eastwood directing and then they changed it to Gigli you would be able to walk away.
A major rewrite would be classed as a major change, IF SMG had this clause in her contract.
