Mike Massa (Angel stunt double) in Superman Returns. He's acting and stunt doubling as Supes himself.

I confess, I'm so excited about the new trailer that I was willing to look deep in the production for a Whedon connection. Turns out I didn't have to look that far.

The long-time stunt double for Angel and stunt coordinator on 'Angel' actually plays "777 Pilot" and is also credited as lead stunt double, presumably meaning he actually dons the cape and boots. There's no sign of his acting role in the trailer, but he could conceivably be in it as stunt double.

I've added the Agent stunt double to your headline just in case people don't who he is.
Yayy !! Can't wait to see Superman do that spinning back kick of Mike Massa's (my favourite visual gag in Smile Time is when puppet Angel does that move).
Mmmh, I'll pass on this one.

Seriously, why did they cast the boy from Smallville to play Superman?

What, it's not him? Well, he has the same age and the same "hey, I'm a good-looking teen on US TV" look.
The new Superman Returns trailer just went up.

Just think,in the not too far future,we'll have Joss Whedon's Wonder Woman.

Uhm, I'll wait to see if he can act. The reason why they cast generic-good-looking-man is because it'll sell, no doubt.

I've heard, erm, rumours this film hasn't turned out well. I'll wait to judge for myself.
Well I can't watch the trailer with my crappy dial-up but I'm still excited!

Good for Mike Massa.

Peta Wilson Yay!
Although she really couldn't help League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Well, acting isn't everything... yes, as much as good-looking isn't everything. Both counts. Had they cast Al Pacino for Superman - and there's no doubt Al Pacino can act - this would also have been a terrible choice.

Really: this superman is not supposed to be so young, if Lane is married and so on... it seems to me that, casting such a face for superman, they are trying to ride a Smallville horse, and since I can't think less of this series...

No, come on gossi, feel free to talk!
Actually, the guy playing Superman here is a year younger then Tom Welling.
This movie is set almost directly after Superman II (best sequel ever). Anyhow Brandon Routh was cast for a very good reason in the Superman movie and I trust Bryan Singer's judgement.

Course in 2 months time I'll be saying.

Anyhow _________ ___________ was cast for a very good reason in the Wonder Woman movie and I trust Joss Whedon's judgement.
Was Massa Angel's stunt double on Buffy too? With his little cameo in The Train Job, that would make him another hat trick.
Of course, __________ __________. Why didn't anyone suggest her before ? ;)

I think Brandon Routh was cast for many reasons but at least partly because, from certain angles, he's the absolute spitting image of Christopher Reeve and as Simon says 'Returns' is intended as a sequel to Superman II (presumably Singer is going to Highlander 2 the other sequels out of movie continuity). Reeve too was a good looking, young relative unknown so it's probably wise not to prejudge.
Wow, the trailer did it's job. This looks really good and I'm not usually into the comic character movies. Thanks for the link, Buffyfantic.

Did anyone else get the impression that Brandon Routh was channeling Christopher Reeve? *spine chill*
Yep,I got the Christopher Reeve vibe as well.
Tycho, I believe Massa worked on Buffy S3 (someone correct me if I'm wrong). I don't think he was on Buffy before, since the sword-fighting double in Becoming II is clearly neither Boreanaz nor Massa.

Oh good god. I'm so not going to laugh or comment or anything!
Too be fair, Routh is roughly the same age Christopher Reeve was when he was cast, which is why I've never understood the "too young" comments. As it is, I have no idea if he can act, and won't know till I actually see the film, but he looks and sounds so much like Reeve that it makes the geek inside me do backflips. I love that Singer's embracing the camp aspects of the character as well as the serious side, and the trailer looks fantastic, so despite some negative buzz I've heard, I'm optimistic.
Why is no one talking about how deft Kevin Spacey appears to be (at least in the trailer) as Lex Luthor? Now that guy can act.
I was just going along with it saying "Yeah, it looks okay." until it got near the end. Then a combination of Spacey and the tag at the end made me smile out loud. I'll probably take my son to see this in the theater.
Yes, much Spacey praise. He's hamming it up a bit, but it works for Lex. And visually, this looks fantastic. I'll be there opening day.
I think Kevin Spacey will be to this movie what Jack Nicholson was to Batman i.e. he completely owne it.
Kevin Spacey, hamming it up? Never! ;-)

Mr. Spacey is great, really, but he does tend to, er, go big. Which, I agree, jam2, is perfect for Lex Luthor. So, some good genre things coming along -- this, X3, erm, when's Spidey premiering, this year or next?

It is not so much the physical age than the appearence that matters; and, sorry to say, but Reeve at the time of Superman (I) didn't have this "teen" look that Routh has.

I love Mike Massa's work - Was he in Train Job? - gorramit I might have to watch ep again to see *sigh* - yeah like I need a reason.

Wouldn't normally bother with Superman but Kevin Spacey as Lex - now that I would love to see.

You big tease.

And I agree Simon, Spacey looks like he's going to be great as Lex.
Thanks, jam2.

The Do That Girl - Yeah, he was one of Niska's henchmen in that last big fight in Serenity's cargo hold. I think he was the one Wash went after with the Mule, but I may be wrong.
I've been seeing nothing but bad from everything I heard and saw in regards to this movie. But I have to be honest and say the trailer has my interest piqued.
