Second Part Of Brian Lynch's Broken Frontier Interview. More about Spike:Asylum, the challenges of writing licensed comics, interaction with fandom and some of his favorite Buffyverse episodes and plots.

A great interview.

Spike's been through so many changes that had to be handled just right, or it would come off as really silly and unbelievable. Psycho killer to full-on hero is a tough evolution to pull off, and it's a testament to everyone involved that it was done so well. And James Marsters (Spike) deserves a boatload of the credit. Everything they put him through, and never a false moment.

Absolutely spot on. The only arc I enjoy more from the shows is Wesley's which was arguably even harder to pull off since he went from loser to, well, loser, also a tough journey (OK, one was buffoonish and the other was magnificent but still, losers both).

Also completely agree that Morrison and Kubert are breathing a whole new kind of life back into old long, dark and eary. Batman is currently a book where pretty much every panel rewards close examination and simple lines can be mulled for meaning on multiple levels. All for 2 quid a month. Bonus.

Great, entertaining interview in general. Erm, BTW, a, err, friend asked me to ask if that's a legitimate episode of Cleopatra 2525 or if Msr. Lynch was just being hilarious. And he (or it could be she) is also interested in precisely which episode it was. I'm My friend is just curious you understand.
Saje funny. Funny good.
Agreed (surprise, surprise) Saje, that the Spike and Wesley arcs were the two most enjoyable, and the most deliciously played out. I don't agree however, that Wesley was a loser at the end. He went out a warrior. A warrior and a big damn hero.

Oh, and masterful use of subterfuge, there. I don't think anyone caught on! ;)
Subter-who now ? *whistles innocently* Dunno what you mean ;).

I think it speaks volumes about how well his character was written (and acted) that I agree Wesley died a warrior and a hero but I still think he went out a loser albeit, as I say above, a magnificent one. He didn't get the girl, he didn't really find personal peace or fulfilment and, obviously, he didn't win his fight, in fact he didn't even make much of a fist of it, IMO. But he had all the guts in the world and just because of the man he was he inspired Illyria to try to be something more.

He got dealt some shitty cards and he didn't even always play them that well but he kept playing. That counts. So hero, check. Warrior, check. Loser ? Also check.

(all just my tuppence worth, of course)
He got dealt some shitty cards and he didn't even always play them that well but he kept playing."

True dat. I guess that word "loser" just conjures up images of stunted basement dwellers with zero ambition, talent or life skills.

When you point out all the things he 'lost' - his life being the most obvious and important of those - he could be seen as the ell word.
I'm looking very forward to this comic series. I agree with ya, Saje. Wesley is my all time favorite character of the verse because of the amazing arc. Spike is of course a close second. Love them both.
Magnificent Loser. I love that phrase. Very apt. Could fit Wes or Spike.

But my real question is WHEN! Anyone know when we can go get this?

The story sounds great, the writer obviously has a sense of humor and the art is really getting to me!
Thanks for your kind words, everyone. I think Wesley's character was done letter-perfect too, he went through as many changes as Spike, and was done just as believable. Great stuff.

And I'm serious about the scene in CLEOPATRA 2525, she does indeed lap-dance in a chair to get out of ropes. Stirring, Emmy-worthy stuff.

SPIKE:ASYLUM # 1 comes out Wednesday, September 27th!

SPIKE:ASYLUM # 2 comes out Wednesday, October 11th!

Can't wait for you guys to read it.
Brian Lynch! Thanks for coming round to these neck of the woods! Can't wait to read some Asylum.
Yes and thanks for answering my question. I worry sometimes that I will miss out.

I used to order online but my local comic book guy now recognizes me and what I want as soon as I walk in so I feel morally obligated to buy them in store.

Looking forward to this series very much.
Brian, I'm looking forward to to your Spike books. Unfortunately, I'll be seeing them a little late. The head shrink says I won't get out of Asylum # 3 till till November 13th, and for some crazy reason he won't let other Asylums in his asylum. Must be bad for business.
I think I'll have to pick these up if only for the Scott Pilgrim love in the interview.
I'll defintely will be getting these comics from Jay & Silent Bobs in Red Bank.

Brian - thanks for dropping by!
