Matt Roush says Buffy and Angel are in the top tier of genre series ever in response to a reader who asks him what the WB's biggest or most influential shows were.

Yay Matt! He always supports the Whedonverse. :-)
Blatantly agree!
... I think Dawson's Creek is the seminal WB show. I mean, it's a big part of our pop-culture lexicon, and how many imitators came out after that one? I was in college when these shows premiered, and, while no one I knew watched Buffy, pretty much everyone was at least familiar with Dawson's Creek.

Dawson's Creek is a big part of our pop-culture lexicon? Really? I conceed it got better ratings, but I find it hard to believe it left a bigger mark on our culture.

Also, just to add my own anecdotal story to prove nothing, my situation was the exact opposite from this girl - everyone I knew was watching Buffy and the words Dawson's Creek made everyone's nose shrivel up as if there were a fowl odor in the room.
That about sums it up for me too, killinj.
I think they were referring to how many shows tried to be the next Dawson's Creek, which is many, and it's still happening.

Buffy, on the other hand, affected pop culture in ways that people who didn't watch Buffy don't even realize. The Slayer Slang, the strong, ass-kicky girls all over TV and movies - an image of girl strength that wasn't there before. A lot of it is more subliminal than just noticing, "Hey, there's a lot of shows about girls killing vampires. Everybody's trying to be the next Buffy" which is basically what the reader was saying about Dawson's Creek. I'll go with the other any day.
I think they were referring to how many shows tried to be the next Dawson's Creek, which is many, and it's still happening.

Just to be snarky... There could be shows trying to be the next Buffy/Angel, realize that they will never reach that level of greatness, and decide to whimper in the corner instead.
