Summer Glau on the possibility of a Serenity sequel. "There is still a chance".

Some actors just really don't understand how Hollywood works, do they? Just because she's under contract to make the sequel, doesn't mean there's a snow-planet's chance in the Hellmouth that it will ever happen. Sadly.
Well, in fairness, I'd prefer Summer knows how to act than to understand production budget and release forecasts. 'cause I bore myself talking about that frankly.

One thing I can absolutely guarantee - the comments are fairly positive, so won't be plastered all over the internet news sites. If she'd said 'Joss is evil and refuses to make one!', it'd be everywhere as 'Joss hates fans and plans to invade Denmark, too!'.
Joss is invading Denmark?

Let me go tell IMDb...they'd believe it, right?
Oh, I wish he would ;-) (Dane here, obviously)

Anyway, why assume Summer's stupid and thinks contract => chance? I read her as saying that without a contract there wouldn't have been a chance, which I'm sure is right. Anyway, I like her for hoping, though I won't hold my breath - and I don't think she is either.
Personally, I like optimism. And all I see here is Summer being optimistic, not her misunderstanding anything. It's possible.

"I am trying to get anywhere where people invite me," said the 25-year-old.

Well, you are hereby invited to drop by any time you like. The autograph queue will be a bit short, but I'll just go stand in it many times to keep you busy. :-P
Bear in mind Summer is in a slightly better position to know what's going as opposed to the likes of you and me. So it might be nice if we give her the benefit of the doubt.
Doesn't Summer still keep in contact with Joss? So wouldn't that put her in a better position to know what's happening with the sequel?
I'm in the category of people who are glad that Summer thinks there is a chance. Perhaps, since I have not been a Firefly fan for as long as most hardcore fans, I'm not as bitter and burnt out from all the frustration and anxiety. But any positive notes towards a sequel are good to me!

Meanwhile, I completely forgot she was coming to Australia! Alas, to Sydney.
It seems to me she's making a reasonable statement: the cast is still under contract, so there's still a chance. I didn't see her saying it's "probable," simply that it's "not impossible." I also love that she's combining going to conventions with seeing the world...smart girl!
Simon, agreed.

Surely if there is anyone that can give us a little positive information that can at least be assumed to be not a total fabrication of truth it's going to be one of the main cast members.

She is saying that there is still a chance, nothing more. I'll take that as a plus, myself.
To be honest, the cast get asked the sequel questions at conventions all the time, and usually always answer with 'we don't know'. Because they don't. Nor do I, nor does Joss, as evident by his when-the-business-and-fantasy-worlds-collide post from last week here. The only people who really know if there is a chance are the finance bods at Universal.

Although Summer is totally right - the cast are under contract for now, and so Universal are able to put something into production if they want. And if they did, they'd tell Joss and likely the actors agents. So if one of the above says 'Hey, this could really happen', that'll be a hint something has changed at the Unis of the 'verse.

It sounds more like a passing comment taken out of context and made into a news headline. I really, really doubt that Summer realised she was making a definitive statement.

(But surely newsmen wouldn't do such a thing would they??????????)

How many times do Joss and the BDH have to answer this question?
Andy - 942 times. Exactly.
What number are they on now?
I lost count somewhere around number 316..
Simon

Are you forgetting that she's crazy? She doesn't know what she's saying. She never knows what she's saying.

I kid, I kid... :)
Personally, I am gonna take the comment as it was spoken: sequel(s) are possible, Joss & cast wanna do them, up to bigger powers to make that call.

Now...the bigger question here is: how do we keep on making that "possible" a steady presence? Maybe even bump it up a notch to "very possible?" Cuz we got power...but our recruitment drive is mis-matched to a world bent on capital gains.

Too bad we couldn't have someone A+-list celeb admit Firefly and Serenity were their guilty pleasures when chillaxing at home or on set;D
With the way things currently are, I doub there will be a Serenity sequel, but that doesn't mean there isn't still a chance.

If any of the cast of Serenity or Joss himself manage to get a big break and become a big brand name in Hollywood, then I can definitely see Universal wanting to return to Serenity to cash in on that name. All the cast and Joss seem to want to make another movie, so it's just a matter of situation being right so that Universal thinks they can get a good return on their investment of a sequel.

Wait, gossi, I thought we were all set to invade Spain with hungry, angry kitten squads. Now it's on for Denmark?

Geez, I am so not dressed right. Gimme a sec to change...
Hmmm if you invade Denmark, may i recommend going to legoland? I have always wanted to go there...
No, no, QuoterGal. Simon is invading Spain, and Joss is invading Denmark.

Since we seem to be dividing up Europe, I call Italy. I've got roots there, and it's got a good food rep. If I'm going to be a despot, you better believe the cuisine of the country I conquer will be excellent.
Wah! I wanna go with Joss. Will there be turnips?
I've been to legoland! Why I'm boasting about this fact I do not know.
I bagsy England then since i've already invaded which means I won't have to move my stuff. Granted, i'm more of an expeditionary force of one right now but my recruitment drive continues apace. You'd be amazed at the enthusiasm people have for invading a country they're already in, reckon it could really take off.

(the kitten brigades are already eying up Wales though, never satisfied those darn cats)

I'm in the 'off-hand comment blown up to headline proportions' camp. She is, of course, bang on. It's still possible since, as far as i'm aware, the universe hasn't ended (though admittedly i'm not always the first to know these things).
I'm willing to oversee Scotland, benevolently, of course. Then I would benevolently push us back on topic ;)
Hah! As you are wont to do... :D
The Scotland bit or the... oh, I see ;p
...and I'll be by his side as the King of Fife, in the Kingdom of, well, Fife.

The last thing I want to do is further any unnecessary "will-they-or-won't-they-could-they-or-can't-they" sequel ruminating, as it sounds like we're all pretty clear on where things stand. That said, mr. gossi, sir, just out of curiosity... where did Serenity net out in worldwide box office and DVD sales?
Figured that shout out would get you in here ;) I'm interested to know DVD figures, but I won't hold my breath.

ETA- boxofficemojo claims: $38,851,952 worldwide box office. Please chime in, gossi.
It sounds more like a passing comment taken out of context and made into a news headline.

Yes, as is always the case when one of the cast says either "it's possible" or "Firefly is over". This is just more of the same.

What truly boggles me, more than anything else, is that it's ragingly evident everytime Joss comes in and makes one of his "setting the record straight" posts that if there's really any new news, we'll hear it directly from him.

Until we see that, stories like these are just people phishing for web traffic by blowing out of proportion an offhand remark.

Aw crap...and I was hoping to nail Wales myself. Cuz if you're gonna have a despot, might as well be one from the people;)
I want Canada. I don't want to cross a whole ocean to claim my prize. (And, no worries, Canadian folks. I promise to be wise and fair in my rule, yo.) ;-)

Back to topic, I agree that this seems like an offhand remark, or a response to someone's question, that Summer is just answering honestly. Yep, no reason to raise the alert level unless there's a post in purple font.
Re: "a post in purple font"--

All these rumor of projects or the death of projects... When the two worlds align and something actually happens, whatever it is, you guys know I'll be on this site as soon as I'm allowed to be. And I'll be very very clear. [Emphasis added.]

So, taking the above with what Summer says, I think we have reason not to give up hope. Any more than that, well, it's all in The Big Purplebator's name. His actual, adopted name. That stands for "luck" in some parts of the world. And is a four-letter word. Word.

And as for world domination/various invasions, can I go with Joss? Barring that, do you think maybe I could arm wrestle the kitten armies for Wales?
