California Vampire Slayer Act of 2006. In case you guys didn't see this when it was passed in May, the best-named law in this history of the California legislature has to be the Vampire Slayer Act of 2006. It's devoted to minimizing the amount of electricity sucked out of walls by two-pronged vampire appliances--even when those appliances are supposedly off.

Science Daily has more on the vampire appliances phenomenon.

Wow, my state reps actually are doing their jobs. Imagine that in an election year!
It was discussed, but it's nice to be reminded of it. Joss's creation has truly made an impact on our culture; and hundreds of years from now - if humanity survives - academics and trivia buffs will revel in the history of the origin of the name of the law, and there will still be Buffy afficionados.
When I was involved in AE (Alternate Energy - photo-voltaics, hydro and such) we called these Phantom Loads [wiki]. I was taken aback when I first heard about the bill, but quickly realized that Vampire Appliances is better insofar as getting people to quickly grasp the concept.

But it is hard to release the habitual...

It's been posted a couple of time before.

But "It's devoted to minimizing the amount of electricity sucked out of walls by two-pronged vampire appliances" is possibly the loveliest sentence we had on the front page for a long time, so no way am I going to delete this thread.
It doesn't use the v-word, but the European Commission is about to introduce similar regulations on what it calls standby loss reduction (scroll down to the last paragraph).
