Browncoat Poster Project. Adam of the SF Browncoats is creating a poster entirely of text.

He'd really love to for this to be a community project and for all of us to contribute a favorite quote or very short story/memory (e.g. "Joss said our booth was the Ethel Merman of booths." or "Browncoat women are hawt.
Email him at adam at blackmarketbeagles dot com.

Okay, I sent him one or two quotes... well, maybe four or five. Okay, well, call it an even dozen.

Can't think how this project could be expected to appeal to me.

*wide grin*

This is great. I already sent Adam at Black Beagle a suggestion.

Share what you submitted if you've a mind to (I don't know if I'll be able to get a poster or see it since I won't be at Flanvention). Mine was based on some joking at James Gunn's blog when he gave us the news NF had opened his MySpace:

"Cap'n needs to get the girl, and keep her."

Okey-dokey, Tonya J, here's what I sent. All except one are Joss-quotes -- I had to send in that last one, 'cause it's kind of my atheist? (whatever) life-credo, if you will.

-----------

"My visions of the future are always pretty much standard issue. The rich get richer, the poor get poorer and there are flying cars." -- Joss Whedon, TV Guide, 27 December – 2 January, 2004

'’I'm a very hard-line, angry atheist. Yet I am fascinated by the concept of devotion. And I want to explore that." – Joss Whedon, in Emily Nussbaum’s Must-See Metaphysics, NYTimes, 09/22/02

"I hate camp. I don't enjoy dumb TV. I believe Aaron Spelling has single-handedly lowered SAT scores." – Joss Whedon, in Emily Nussbaum’s Must-See Metaphysics, NYTimes, 09/22/02

''If I made 'Buffy the Lesbian Separatist,' a series of lectures on PBS on why there should be feminism, no one would be coming to the party, and it would be boring. The idea of changing culture is important to me, and it can only be done in a popular medium.'' – Joss Whedon, in Emily Nussbaum’s Must-See Metaphysics, NYTimes, 09/22/02

''I want viewers to equate the past, the present and the future, not to think of the future as 'that glowy thing that's distant and far away.' " – Joss Whedon, in Emily Nussbaum’s Must-See Metaphysics, NYTimes, 09/22/02

''We're paying homage to the same thing: the storytelling. I wanted to create a fiction that would affect people's lives. And this has affected people's lives. It's affected my life. Without it my life is meaningless.'' – Joss Whedon, in Emily Nussbaum’s Must-See Metaphysics, NYTimes, 09/22/02

''I don't want to create responsible shows with lawyers in them. I want to invade people's dreams.'' -- Joss Whedon, in Emily Nussbaum’s Must-See Metaphysics, NYTimes, 09/22/02

"My interest in women is mainly their strength. My interest in men is mainly their flaws. I realize both have both, but that's how it falls out. It's an identification with Otherness -- call it Cinematic Drag." -- Joss Whedon, in an on-line Q&A answering questions from various fansites, "Joss Answers Questions," September 29, 2005

"Stay crunchy, even in milk." -- Joss, Whedon, Whedonesque.com post on November 9th, 2005

"Very occasionally, if you really pay attention, life doesn’t suck." -- Joss Whedon, from the liner notes to the cast album for Once More With Feeling.

"SERENDIPITY fans happen to be the most tastefullest fans who have extra or redundant body parts." -- Joss Whedon, February 16, 2006, on warrenellis.com

"If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do." -- Angel, Season Two, "Epiphany." (Actually, Tim Minear wrote this ep, but Joss is the uber-mensch, yeah? Also mentioned in the DVD commentary for the Firefly episode, Objects in Space.)
"If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do."

I still get chills when I read that. Good choice.
Those are awesome. I'm still not clear on why Joss is an angry atheist, but I don't do near the reading-up on him I should do.
gee all I sent was I LOVE MY CAPTAIN
I'm getting so many awesome submissions! Sometimes (ok, all the time) I'm proud to be a browncoat! :)
"Lunakitty is a traditionalist." *grin*
Someone asked offline if the poster was going to be "just text" ... The answer is yes, it will, but I'm using the text to create a design. So it's not just going to be a bunch of black text on a plain white background.
I stole and sent in mifeng's "Aww, come to Pappa!" Joss quote. Wish we could include the hug that went with it. :-D
Man, I'm really curious as to what this becomes. I really hope it doesn't take too long!
Wish we could include the hug that went with it.

I'll see if I can figure something out. :)
lexigeek: "...I'm using the text to create a design."

lexigeek, you're making a calligram-ish kind of thing, yeah? Like Apollinaire's this-y and that-y (which I'm sure are their official names...)

(The Gonerian "Aww, come to Pappa!" is just the sweetest.)

[ edited by QuoterGal on 2006-11-12 09:59 ]
Something like that, yeah, (I didn't know it had a name!) and at the same time altogether different. :)
Do you mean more like a photo-mosaic but using text lexigeek ? I've seen similar stuff where the design was created by bolding or colouring the text in different places.

Cool idea anyway.

(know what you mean Tonya J, Joss has never seemed all that 'angry' an atheist, in fact he seems quite moderate in most things, but then some see that sort of thing as pretty private so could be he's just never vented the way he'd like to in public. Also, maybe not all that great a career move ;)
I believe Joss has also described himself as something like an angry liberal (words to that effect, standard disclaimers apply, this post will self destruct in 30 days). That doesn't come across in his work, to that extent.
Umpteen zillion good quotes by Joss in one post.

I would also like to contribute "Serenity. Better than Ice Pirates!".
Someone is sending in "Always be yourself. Unless you suck" right?
And how about something from the little video he did for RavenU, talking to us Whedonesquers, from a couple of years back. Something about how we were cooler than everyone else?
I'm sure that the final product will be the Serenity made up of all those words sent out to Adam. Can't wait to find out

Oh, brilliant! Thanks Simon!

Amazingly, no! Well, sort of. A friend of mine who I got into FF & Serenity, but who I don't think would characterize herself as a browncoat, was searching the Web for Joss quotes after I told her about this project, and she found that one. It was the first time she'd seen it!
I stole and sent in mifeng's "Aww, come to Pappa!" Joss quote. Wish we could include the hug that went with it. :-D

lol. Thanks Cab! I wish I could keep the hug in my pocket!
I love this marvelous review of the best of Joss quotes. Could boyinshortpants add a tag of "joss quotes" to the tags, so it would be easy to find it again? I haven't seen the NYTimes article, as it was published before I was even aware there was a Joss Whedon. It looks like a good one. Must look it up.

And, lexigeek, I'm really looking forward to seeing the finished results.
Simon: "Umpteen zillion good quotes by Joss in one post."

Thanks for posting that link, Simon, it's just chock-full of nuggets of goodness. Oh, yeah, and thanks for writing 'em in the first place, Jossir.
Simon,

"Serenity, better than Ice Pirates!" After I finished snorting and guffawing, I thought to myself, "That is almost tattoo-worthy."
Great idea! Even greater idea: 2 t-shirts, one for all the rest and one that is the Special QuoterGal Edition. ;-)

Heh heh heh :) Sounds good to me. BTW, I have about 200 entries so far, and I'm hoping to get about 200 more, so please continue to send them in, (and encourage others to do the same) even if it's just your screen name!
I can't wait to see this -- will Black Beagle offer the poster at the store or elsewhere? I'm sure it's going to be fantastic.
Wow, billz, thanks, that color was startling and looked like the "Amazing Black Market Beagle Yellow!" And billz and lexigeek, who wouldn't want their own special version of the shirt? *grin* Maybe with precious jewels sewn into the cuffs? And served with tea & dumplings?

lexigeek, if you want, you can email me the quote-list you've got and I'll add a bunch more right away - and if you do get more from others, you can dump these extras. (And I'd like to take this opportunity to offer this absolutely unsolicited testimonial about the quality of your Cafe Press stuff. I bought a lot of 'verse stuff lately at CP, and of the three producers I used, yours was the only one where the art was high-res, crisp and thoroughly well-done. Those others were disappointing, but you delivered. Good on you! I now drink coffee every morning from your super-large "I'm a Fan of a Particular Science Fiction Television Show and/or Movie" mug.)
Wow, thank you!! I'm flattered! I will send you the list in a moment.
that color was startling and looked like the "Amazing Black Market Beagle Yellow!"

That was pretty much what I was aiming for, something beagly, and you're welcome, QG! :-)
that color was startling and looked like the "Amazing Black Market Beagle Yellow!"

That was pretty much what I was aiming for, something beagly ...

You guys rock, and have completely made my day! :)
I went with the following, all from the 'rejected taglines' collection:

"One Captain. One Psychic. One Assasin. One Doctor. One Shepherd. Another Assasin, but different from the first. One Mechanic. One Companion, which is like a geisha or a courtesan, I guess sort of. One... um... did I do Mechanic? Which movie is this?"

and

"Serenity. Like glass in a bag."

and another fave:

"They're outnumbered, outgunned, and have no skills... Wow, they're gonna DIE!"

I'd also like to add my voice to the chorus of people declaring how much this idea rocks.
Lexi, I hope you'll include the obligatory Joss, you bastard!
Maybe you could also include part of that eulogy that Alan Tudyk read for Wash (link to the convention/video is here someplace) that included his asides ... "and now you are gone (or dead I can't remember)" ... Alan: "Thanks to that bastard Joss Whedon."

Of course, you wanted less than 10 words each phrase.
Of course, you wanted less than 10 words each phrase.

Yeah, but I've gotten some really good quotes (esp. Joss quotes) that have been substantially longer than 10 words, but were too good to pass up. So, as long as it's not half a page long, I'll use whatever folks send me. :)

lexigeek I commend your enthusiasm but I'd rather we didn't have people posting comments asking Joss to email them.
Not a problem, Simon. Don't want to overstep my bounds or my welcome. :)
Not a problem. Good luck with your project. I like to see it as a t-shirt design btw if that's possible under the current climate.
It should be, yeah. I'm avoiding any and all copyright-infringing elements, unless "browncoat" infringes, which I'm hoping it doesn't when used to describe the fandom itself. I actually came up with this idea while pondering how to keep designing for browncoats while protecting myself from being eaten by roaming bands of copyright lawyers. :D

I'm more concerned about it actually reproducing well on a t-shirt, but that's another matter.
