The letters page in Peter "Spike Vs Dracula" David's X-Factor #13 (now published online in the X-Blog on Marvel.com) brings up Serenity to argue a point. Serenity wins all arguments. (Spoilers for X-Factor #1-12.)

About membership.
Layla Miller was a shameless plot device before he got his hands on her. The difference with Mr. Universe is that, in House of M the solution was provided by Layla no matter what the core characters did or didn't do. There was no dramatic resolution. In Serenity, the crew fought to the death in order for them to be able to use the gift of Mr. Universe. They earned the right for a Deus Ex Machina, so to speak.
Aaaaanyway. He knows how to write her, how to transform her into a real character, so in the end that's all that matters.
