Amy Acker joins Drive. She will play Kathryn Tully.

Oh, fuck yeah. ACKER!
Really? Cool! The Whedon Alumni know how to stick together. I wonder if her role is the housewife who's in the race with her baby and her husband doesn't know? That would fit Amy.
impalergeneral, she's going to be Fillion's wife.

This is getting a little unreal.
thats fucking crazy,
my sisters name is Alexis Kate Tully

now we have Alex Tully (Nathan Fillion)
and Kathryn Tully (Amy Acker)

and they just both happen to be portrayed by Whedonverse actors.
Haha, she's playing Nathan's character's wife. This is just too much. Awesome.
All I can think is Nathan and Amy would make the cutest babies. Any more roles that need casting still?
Oh...the sheer brilliance of this idea blows my f-ing mind!

:D

And even if Amy's playing Nathan's sister, rather than wife, it's still mighty damn cool. Mainly cuz all Tim would need is Gina and Adam to pop up and you got the Big 4 for Whedonverse actors who totally blew us outta the water with their 2nd roles for Joss & co ;)
Wow, I want to watch Drive right now!
10%ofnothin - filming starts today. Of course, guest stars.. I hear Adam needs a job. ;o)
I wonder if her role is the housewife who's in the race with her baby and her husband doesn't know? That would fit Amy.

impalergeneral, that role is played by Melanie Lynskey. Amy is playing Nathan Fillion's character's wife.

This is such great news! Although the fact that she plays his "missing" wife doesn't bode well for amount of screentime.
Just when I think I can't be more excited about a show...
Now that's what I'm talking about.

Any more Whedon'verse people added to Drive will create a vortex that has the potential to pull Joss right into it.

Don't look at me like that - that's just how physics works.
Holy crap, Fred's married to Mal! :O

This is going to be strange, but it's really good news!

Now we just need an actor/actress from BtVS, and we'll have a trifecta of Whedonverse...ness.

[ edited by snakebyte on 2007-01-18 09:39 ]
Oh, man... as if I wasn't already dying to see the show because it's Tim... they add Nathan (who I've adored since his soap days when I was like, 12...) but now Amy?

I think I have to go explode from the giddy. Or count this as an awesome late birthday present, since the premiere date is 4 days after my birthday.

I wonder how many other Whedonverse actors will show up, if only in a guest capacity?

And QuoterGal? If Joss can pop up on VM after Alyson and Charisma end up over there, I don't think you're being at all unrealistic.
Thanks to everyone who's told me who plays who. I didn't know who was going to play the bored housewife in the race.
But Fred married to Mal is an interesting situation, but if Nathan's character is racing because Amy's character is kidnapped, what will her role be? Will we learn she wants him to think he was kidnapped for another reason? Just wondering....
Is it April yet?
So Illyria is married to Caleb (had to find something to say, as every line about Mal and Fred may have already been used). Neat.

And QuoterGal? If Joss can pop up on VM after Alyson and Charisma end up over there, I don't think you're being at all unrealistic.

As QuoterGal said, it's just physics.
You don't get it: Amy plays the man who's in the race and Nathan plays his wife which stays at home to clean up and raise the kids.

I guess the internet sites which reported the info just mixed up who plays who in the Tully family.
Will we learn she wants him to think he was kidnapped for another reason? Just wondering....

You'll learn things in the pilot. The pilot is all about learning things. And also learning what needs to be learned.
Holy crap! This show just keeps looking better and better. Wow!
Acker and Fillion on the same show - I think I'm going to explo-
Clean-up on Aisle 4.
This just gets more awesomer and awesomer! I so want this show to kick off now! I'm giddy.
Oh! My! GOD! This is very exciting.

(That said... I think this thread proves how few people actually read the articles that are linked to... It clearly says she's playing Nathan Fillion's wife - and yet there's speculation? Weird.)

Also, I don't wanna see Whedon *in* "Drive". I want to see him direct an episode... or write one :-)
...um, what?

This is just way too much awesomeness for one show.
This is fantastic. This show just keeps getting better and better. Oh, the anticipation.
... It clearly says she's playing Nathan Fillion's wife - and yet there's speculation?

crossoverman I think in some parts of America wife/sister is a confusing distinction. According to 'The Simpsons' anyway.

As QuoterGal said, it's just physics.

Yep, s'true. Physics = vortices. Teacher told me. Course he was stoned at the time and his next comment was "Wow, that's my fuckin hand, man !" but it's probably still good info.

Re: screen time, I wouldn't be surprised if we had quite a few 'Lost' style flash-backs so she may appear more than her character description suggests. And, what's more, w00t !

(and yay Tim for taking care of his peeps. Is Katie Finneran making an appearance ? She was great in both 'The Inside' and 'Wonderfalls' IMO)
I think, Saje, we'll have a whole bunch of flashbacks to show the viewers why any of the drivers are in the race, from the detective to the bored housewife to the rogue landscaper. The first prize, which is supposedly 32 million according to one of the promos, is just part of the story, I'm sure.
I just have one thing to say!
WOHO!!!!!
That's fantastic news - and it's not that I am ungrateful or anything but Alexis anyone? He is just not on TV enough.
Sorry, billz wanted to post something here, but after he squeed like a little girl for about an hour, his brain exploded. It was gross and spectacular at the same time, kind of like that Brenda scene in Slither. Hopefully, something can be done with duct tape to repair billz's head if we find all the pieces. ;-)
SQUEEEE, SQUEEEEE!!!!!
I think in some parts of America wife/sister is a confusing distinction. According to 'The Simpsons' anyway.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA... Thanks, saje!

I wouldn't be surprised if we had quite a few 'Lost' style flash-backs so she may appear more than her character description suggests.

All flashbacks are now "Lost"-style? ;-)

Yes, I guess if she's missing... and if the race is already in progress... there will be some need of flashbacks. But Tim would never make them mandatory.

Wow, I can't wait to see what he does with this!
No. Frakkin'. Way.

I really hope FOX doesn't cancel this one.
Oh. My. God.
I really hope FOX doesn't cancel this one.

the fun about "drive": it already got CANCELED! that means it's cancelity-immune for at least 10.000 years...

I'm so excited!

[ edited by bookworm on 2007-01-18 12:40 ]
Well it's offical. Drive has reached must-see status. It's now my favorite new show. This just gets better and better.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around Mal and Illyria married. What a thought. Though might he prefer Fred to Illyria?
*whines* No fair! Where's my rôle, billz? *Pouts* You promised!

Oh, how quickly they forget! billz, you've gone Hollywood! *Goes off to throw historic/histrionic temper tantrum/hissy fit*

Seriously, this really is good news! Whedon Alumni rule!

Also, I hope your head gets all better, billz. I'll FedEx some duct tape right away. And don't forget to look under the sofa. In my experience, some of the pieces always wind up there after this kind of explosion.
Big congrats to Amy!
Awww, damn you guys. Everyone had a party while I was asleep, and took all the words I could have said about this.
Well,that's just...neat! :-)
Is this show going to be super awesome? Why yes I do believe it is.

I know where I'm going to be April 15th.
Ah to live in Amnerica and be able to watch this as soon as it starts! I hope it gets shown in Britain eventually. All this casting news is so exciting. I'm sure Amy will be great.
Ah but will Amy play sweet or nasty or sweet-nasty? She was excellent in Alias. Maybe she is not really kidnapped but in the race herself. I hope we see her often but it is a large cast so I'm not hopeful.
Wow, indeed.

Does anyone else think there's a secret plan to create a show with a huge cast, pepper that cast with Whedonverse alums, start killing off the OTHER characters, and, in effect, create a new Whedon-y show by default? I do.
Ssshhhh ;).
I wouldn't put it past Tim Minear, Septimus. :) If we can get someone from Buffy (Emma Caufield, mebbe? Is she doing anything right now?) we'll have another one of Joss' hat tricks.
Aaaaahhhhhhh!!!! I just wet my pants! This totally makes up for the horrendously shitty weather outside this morning. Thanks Tim!
Now all we have to do is get a Tim Minear show to, you know, STAY ON THE AIR, and I think I can die happy.
Should we go ahead and start a preemptive letter writing campaign now for when FOX...pulls a FOX?
Thats fantastic news
This is going to be a giant hit. Drive is going to be a giant hit. It's already a giant hit. There will need be no letter campaign. Drive is a giant hit...

[ edited by dreamlogic on 2007-01-18 16:14 ]
Excellent! Congratulations Amy! :)

Hell, let's just get everyone from the Whedonverse either a role or a guest spot on "Drive"! They can rename the show "C'mon In! The Water's Fine!" Or not.

In any case, I sincerely hope FOX nututures and gives this time to flourish. Oh wait...it's FOX. Well, here's hoping anyway. **crosses fingers**. That pre-"24" timeslot (I love "24") is excellent prime time real estate and I hope it translates into millions of eyeballs watching "Drive" while waiting for "24" to start.
Way to GO, Tim Minear! If I were a Mayor, I'd give ya a parade, dude.
I guess I'll have to turn on my cable again.
I just wet my pants! This totally makes up for the horrendously shitty weather outside this morning

I never met anyone else that enjoys wetting their pants so much ;).
That is amazing news. As I've said before, Tim Minear's involvement with Drive would be enough to convince me to check it out, but the fact that he's slowly assembling some of the finest Whedonverse actors to get involved only sweetens the deal. I'm hoping Drive is a huge success.
My God. This...wow. Fuck. This just can't get any better, can it?

*hopes that TPTB will take the hint and make it more awesome*
Let's not push our luck! :: Rubs lucky demon's foot ::
Wait. Ben is married to Glory?

Why, FOX. Oh, why do you do this. Every few years you come out with one or two outstanding shows that I must watch. And then you rip my heart out. Firefly, Arrested Development...this stuff better go over better than that!
Silly Saje! I guess what I said could be slightly misconstrued. Unless of course I meant it exactly how it sounded...who knows?
Hey Ryan-RB,

You know what they say. Third time's a charm.
;)
Now they need to get Nick Brendon or Emma Caulfield in there to create balance in the 'verse.
Acker! I am finally placated since Alan Ruck was lost in the shuffle.
Whoo hoo! I think Tim's stacking the deck on this one, really looking forward to the show. He's certainly is building up the talent. Crossing my fingers that this show will be Tim's charm.
*crosses fingers toes, hands, arms legs, feet, eyes* Let's hope it works out!
Just when I'm thinking my expectations can't get any higher! I love Amy!
Any more Whedon'verse people added to Drive will create a vortex that has the potential to pull Joss right into it.

Don't look at me like that - that's just how physics works.

Well, Joss seems to have fit in his busy schedule to direct an episode of the Office, maybe he might find time to direct (or perhaps dare I say write) an episode of Drive?

Either way, I definitely want to check out Drive when it airs!
I haven't been this excited in awhile. Wondering the role Tim will place our Amy in? Could go with the stereotype of a cute girl in a zippy sports car. Or the 'down and out' waitress making the run in her VW bug because she needs the money. Perhaps my favorite, she's in a huge 4-by-4 with a supercharged engine and a bone to pick with Nathan.

Whatever the case, I'm looking forward to it. Oh my! I think I'm developing that dreaded "restless leg syndrome" which there's no cure.
Yay!! I am so glad to see that Amy has joined the cast!!!

Next, they should get Jonathan Woodward...he has been on all the other 'verse series!

Should we go ahead and start a preemptive letter writing campaign now for when FOX...pulls a FOX?
skeezycheeses | January 18, 16:05 CET

That might be a good suggestion since FOX seems to muck up all the good stuff.
Some people seem to be forgetting that Richard Brooks (Jubal Early, Firefly) signed on to play Detective Ehrle (tell me that's not deliberate!) in Drive.
... maybe he (Joss) might find time to direct (or perhaps dare I say write) an episode of Drive?

I don't see how he would be able to resist. There's toys and blue screens and more toys and that fella that smells of turnips, I understand.
...signed on to play Detective Ehrle (tell me that's not deliberate!)...

I get it. Assume the 'E' is silent, then 'hrle' looks a bit like 'Hurley' the guy from 'Lost'. So you're saying they're all driving on a huge island ! With Polar Bears ! And Walt from 'Lost' is a 'little man' so he must be a pyromaniac ! Can't believe I missed that, cheers zeitgeist.
Saje - so what are you saying about Ben...? Wait, Ben from Lost is Glory?!
*head explodes*
OMG!!!!!! *asplodes* Nathan AND AMY???? And they are husband and wife????? AHHHHHHH the universe is awesome!!
Oh gosh, I just pray that the FOX network actually gives Tim a chance this time.
While there is really insufficient procrastination time between now and then to get the old 1040 filled in and mailed, it is way too long to wait to go for a Drive. How can this be?
Is that Fred getting smoochy with my Captain???
It is!

The Whedonverses are colliding. Quick, somebody call Buffy.

[ edited by kerfuffle on 2007-01-18 23:37 ]
What happens when Worlds Collide in this case? Is it like fusion in The Fly?: "You, me, the baby. We'll be the ultimate family." ... Okay, that was kind of gross but you know what I mean.

NF with AA on a TM show? Numfar, do the Dance of Joy! Hell, I'll join in! *boogies* *frugs* *does modern interpretation of Drive pilot ala Isadora Duncan*

Gods, Tim, we're excited, can you tell? You're going to make us love these characters and clutch them to our collective bosom, I just know it (and eventually kill off some of them in heartwrenching, totally unexpected ways, if your past record is any indication). I can't wait! Now if FOX doesn't do that customarily cruel-and-untimely-cancellation thing, we should have an awesome new series to obsess over.

Oh and please, if you can get that Joss guy off his lazy butt, could he possibly write or direct a little something? It would break the internet and be so very entertaining to watch (both the show and the broken internet, actually)...
I have no words. Dance of joy in the library receives funny stares but so worth it! And Richard Brooks too! I didn't know that- the character name - just sheer awesomeness. I'm starting to get scared though, this is beginning to be a little too good to be true. I do have a problem though, how to get the coin, to get the cable, to watch the new best show on tv. Hmmmm, talk about a mood killer. ;)
Except, kerfuffle, this is Minear's fourth show... if we include Firefly - and we do :-)

Firefly, Wonderfalls, The Inside and Drive...
This is the COOLEST! I cannnot WAIT for this show!

*sob* It's so far away...can we just skip February this year???
Please???

Anyone know if this is going to be on itunes for the television-challenged?
I love seeing our favorite actors getting out there on our screens again. This is great for Amy and for us.
Agree that we need more Alexis....maybe Amy's character has a long lost brother?
This IS really cool.
Saje - so what are you saying about Ben...? Wait, Ben from Lost is Glory?!

Close zeitgeist but Ben from 'Lost' is really a Polar Bear ! You're right though, Glory is actually on the island but is yet to be revealed. She was in the U-Haul section, just behind the tail section.

Man, Alexis needs to get some of this action, even if he just pops up out of various boots as a random stowaway. Or maybe a highway patrol officer ? Like the 'Drive' equivalent of Roscoe P. Coltrane ?
SangChaud, it did take quite a while to find all those head pieces. Thanks for the tip about the couch; there was a big chunk down there. And who says that just because Amy Acker got a role on Drive, there's not also a big role for you? Someone has to play the super-sexy yet very scary person who goes around giving cryptic information as the official representative of the race organizers (like Eve and Marcus Hamilton on Angel). I'm just sayin', the role should be yours. ;-)
Do I get a role, twin billz?
Since when did billz became the gatekeeper to roles in Hollywood? Did I miss the newsflash? Billz, do I get a role to? Hunh hunh??? PLEASE????
Sheesh, I try to encourage my peeps, and now everybody wants something! OK, here we go: UnpluggedCrazy, you can play the guy who lines up new challenges for the racers, but makes them really devious and tricky so he's always laughing an evil laugh as he describes what they have to do, plus he has a villain quirk, like popping the top of a cigarette lighter open and shut or puffing on an asthma puffer. And he has a nonsense catch phrase, like when they tried to make fetch the new word in Mean Girls -- I leave that to Tim, or to you, dude -- you're a good writer! kurya, you can be earnest guy on the inside who wants to tear down the whole structure, so you are always intervening to save a driver who's about to get his a** kicked in some way or fall into a trap, only you never let them see you or you would totally be killed by your evil overlords -- you're just a rumor, like in BSG when . So the drivers staying alive hinges on you, only everyone at Evil Central think you're just another cog in the evil machine. ;-)

Anyone else who wants a role has to play a gas station owner, because I'm running out of ideas. Or other shows to plagiarize. I'm just sayin'. ;-)
Alexis, please, for Amy's kidnapper! Me want some sexy, stubbly, evil Alexis. ... drool ...
billz, you really are way too funny!
jenofthejungle, consider yourself my BFF! ;-)
:: Sniff :: Where are my bestest WHEDONesque friends?

Well, at least I'm James Gunn's favorite MySpace friend. He told me so in a bulletin he sent to 15,024 other peo--oh. I'm so screwed.

[ edited by Tonya J on 2007-01-20 05:11 ]
billz, glad the couch tip worked for ya. And thanks ever so for the rôle in Drive--even if it is typecasting. You know, with the super-sexy & all. I can't wait to see if I get any scenes with UnpluggedCrazy and kurya. Oh, and Amy & Alexis & Nathan, too. To say nothing of various gas station owners.

Seriously, they really do need to get Alexis for this. Tim, are you listening?? I mean, I don't want to have to play hardball here, and make my signing on contingent upon signing Alexis as well.

Um, Saje, do I understand that you want Alexis popping out of various chemists' shops, possibly armed with sticking plasters for any race contestants unfortunate enough to get into fender-benders? Or do you envision him "drowning in footwear"?!

P.S. kurya, billz has always been "the gatekeeper to roles in Hollywood"!! Sorry, billz, your secret identity has been revealed. . . .
Heh, SangChaud ;).

(US/UK lexicon for discussing 'Drive': trunk = boot, hood = bonnet, gas = petrol, stick shift = manual transmission - or just 'gears' since almost all cars over here have manual gearboxes, SUV = either '4x4' or 'people carrier' or, increasingly, 'SUV', compact = hatchback, the 'right' side is actually the left, freeways are motorways, parking lots are car parks and Tim Minear = 'bloody talented bloke'. A Big Mac is still a Big Mac though ;)
I'm with everybody else on this. Amy Acker good. More Whedonverse people also good.

As long as we are in dreamland, I like the idea of AD being a mysterious character who keeps casually changing accents, personas and jobs whenever he shows up in the show. Just seems like something he could pull off really well.

Saje, good idea and good job, though "compact = hatchback" gives me pause. Are all smallish cars called hatchbacks in the UK no matter whether they have an actual trunk/boot or whether they have a door in the back? Because a compact car in the US does not necessarily have a hatch...you know...in the back...though hatchback's do. ;-)
SangChaud, sshhhhh! How will I ever cast the new Wonder Woman if everybody knows that -- oops, I've said too much already! ;-)
Wow, so you really are the roles gatekeeper billz ? Might put some money on Morgan Freeman for WW in that case. Reckon i'd get some pretty decent odds ;).

Aha newcj, seems that by pure coincidence everytime someone's said 'compact' on a US show i've been watching they've been talking about a hatchback, hence my goof. So compact just means, well, compact ? That's ... sort of depressingly logical ;).

(though i'd guess nearly all smallish cars over here are hatchbacks, it's just a more efficient use of the space when small really means small and not "Probably wouldn't fit an entire football team" ;). Not all though, sports cars etc. are obviously small, usually two door but don't normally have hatchbacks, they'd be a sort of two seat 'saloon' or 'sedan' as I think you call 'em)

[ edited by Saje on 2007-01-21 03:55 ]
Might put some money on Morgan Freeman for WW in that case.

For a moment, I thought you must have meant Morgan Fairchild but then I realized who the better actor would be, though I wouldn't call him pretty.
Pretty is in the eye of the beholder, Tonya J. Plus, you haven't seen Mr. Freeman in tiara and satin shorts yet. ;-)
Plus, you haven't seen Mr. Freeman in tiara and satin shorts yet. ;-)

billz, have you?? Such luck. . . . But perks like this just go with that sweet gatekeeper to ro-- oops! gig you've got.

Saje, please keep posting such culturally-specific hilarity. I miss London so much. And Minis rule! (The cars, not the skirts. Though I suppose that might depend on the gender of the beholder.)

As long as we are in dreamland, I like the idea of AD being a mysterious character who keeps casually changing accents, personas and jobs whenever he shows up in the show. Just seems like something he could pull off really well.

newcj, I love this idea for Alexis! It's perfect! Tim, are you listening? billz, are you? Please? As a favor to all of us, what with all your, er, influence & stuff?
"they'd be a sort of two seat 'saloon' or 'sedan' as I think you call 'em)"

Yikes! Saloons? Saje, what do you folks do in your cars? I mean it isn't as though we don't have people doing extra curricular activities, but we don't encourage it so blatantly... :-o
Heh, extra vehicular activities ? ;). Y'know, strangely given the US connotations, I think it might denote comfort and roominess (even 'class'). Over here the 'saloon' or 'lounge' bar in a pub is/was more plushly furnished, cleaner, quieter and generally slightly removed from the hoi-polloi (drinks were a bit dearer for the privilege). The 'public' bar would mostly be where working-class men went so that they could swear and so on without offending any delicate sensibilities.

They're very few and far between now though, possibly because after Thatcher suddenly everyone developed middle-class pretensions and the idea of tacitly admitting to working-class status became anathema but I wonder if the two ideas are related ?

(otherwise i've got nothing. Maybe some barmy decree by a bygone King or similar ? ;).
