The Clicker does it 'Once More With Feeling'. The article's writer was inspired by the 'Scrubs' episode to look back at other muscial tv episodes and break down the concept of why they worked.

That was an interesting article. I had no idea Oz did a musical episode. The mind boggles!

'I'll Never Tell' reminded me more of 'Singin' in the Rain' than 'Bye Bye Birdie' (which was made in the '60s as a parody of '50s musicals, anyway), in particular the 'Good Mornin'' number, right down to camera work and the cheesy fake laughter at the end.
I agree the musical-ep should be a rarity on tv. Could you imagine a musical Lost? Or Law and Order? Or even My Name is Earl? *shudder*
...and a cherry on top. There's a reference to "Normal Again" in the blurb about Smallville at the bottom of the page.
It's interesting to speculate on which shows would be reasonable choices for a musical episode. There really needs to be an element of fantasy or whimsy in the show. Though if Oz (which I've never watched, but which I thought was a completely serious show) can get away with it, maybe there are no limits!

Anyway, I'd like to retrospectively nominate Star Trek:TNG for a musical episode. Perhaps something taking place on the holodeck, or with the characters under the influence of Q.
A musical Earl - no problem.

"Number eighty-five... made fun of the high school drama group for doing musicals. Oh no."
Didn't the show "Taxi" with Judd Hirsch and Danny DeVito, have a musical episode? That was back in the late 70s-80s.
The office can have a musical episode. Jim and Pam get everybody but Dwight to sing all the time to drive him crazy.
Joss should direct it.
