March 15 2007

Buffy #1 Gets 2nd Printing (New Cover!). Second printing receives a different tailored cover, but same content. This will be available on March 28th.

Edited to remove content that makes me look like a turd.

DC Comics didn't anticipate such interest and didn't print a large enough quantity? Huh.

I'll have to pre-order the Firefly one FAR in advance.
You should probably note that there are 4 pages from Runaways there. I suppose they could technically be considered a spoiler. I mean the Runaways #25 isn't out yet is it? I get my comics monthly so I never know what is out which week anymore.

Also Buffy is on Dark Horse Comics, not DC Comics.

I wonder what the different cover will be...
its not a spoiler, cause someone posted like a month ago or so those same preview pages from RUnaways
Actually it is a spoiler cause it's not been released yet. But I added some info to the subject line so people know it's there.

ETA: Dark Horse have a press release out which has more info about the 2nd printing so I've changed the link to that.

I'll get back to you once I've figured out what a full bleed cover is. Answers on a post card to the usual address.

OK...being a past, non-comic book type person, I'm curious about this whole new cover thing. If I, like many others here who pre-ordered theirs well in advance from TFAW and now they're not being shipped until 03/21 does this mean that we'll end up getting copies with the new cover? I placed my order in December and am a little sad that I'm not getting in on the first printing. Am I being whiney? Sorry, just confused and way too scared to actually go to a shop.
I think you will still get the first printing. I'm assuming TFAW ordered enough issues before hand. The 2nd printing with the full bleed cover (?) will be out on the 28th.
Today, for the first time ever, I bought two issues of the same comic so that I'd have both covers - does this mean now I'll have to get a third? Ah well, they are beautiful artifacts, a third variant would be nice.
Thanks Simon. I can always count on you to make things clear.
I'm with skeezycheeses on this, also waiting from TFAW... I pre-ordered issue #1 at the end of December, and #2 and #3 at the end of February, I'm really hoping that ordering months in advance at least allows me to get these first printings oppose to the second ones with different covers. I hope you're right Simon, you usually are so I don't know why I'm stressing out so much. I guess it would be nice if TFAW also released a press statement for us worried souls (and soulless) in light of Dark Horse's announcement...
Full bleed means the cover art goes to the edge of the paper, unlike the first printing with the left and bottom border.

I almost bought the Jeanty varient, but I really didn't see why. Jo Chen rocks it, and I'm never going to sell my comic book collection, so I don't see owning a special cover as any type of investment. Of course, I own 9 issues of a 3 issue Serenity miniseries, but we all know that was a slightly different circumstance...
DC Comics didn't anticipate such interest and didn't print a large enough quantity? Huh.

Well, since Diamond (the main comic book distributor) apparently accepted reorders yesterday from comic book stores, Dark Horse likely over-printed the issue, but still couldn't met up with demand.

Example, say Dark Horse got orders from comic book stores asking for 80,000 copies, so they add a buffer and print over 100,000 copies. Then Wednesday as the issue began flying off the shelves, comic book stores re-ordered the comic and claimed the remaining 20,000 extra copies (note the over-print may have been a lot smaller or bigger than that, I'm just making up the 20,000 number). At that point Dark Horse announced that they sold out. Note there might still be issues at certain comic book stores and more arriving next week, it's just that they sold out at the distributor level. With stores still asking for copies beyond what Dark Horse has over-printed, they are now going back to print.
What, there was a variant with the first printing?! Nooo! I need that!

Well...now I'm extremely depressed, but I'll be getting the new cover on the 28th.
Riddle me this. Are Dark Horse being very clever in getting the reprint out by the 28th because this will add to the Diamond Select's sales figures for March?
I think they probably had that contingency in mind Simon (lots of companies must be a bit cheesed off that re-print figures are often too late for monthly charts).

Also, all being well, it's the week before issue 2 is released so folk aren't going to get out of step and there'll be no confusion on the shelves between issues (a definite possibility with simultaneous releases especially with variant covers etc.).
Well, aside from upgrading my camera and paying my $#@#&^#&!! taxes, I was lucky to get the first printings of both #1 covers, but I will certainly get the "full bleed" version when it comes out later this month. I don't knw if I'll get every single issue, or wait for the trade paperbacks, after the first arc, but it's really something the comic book industry has more imagination than TV networks do...or maybe it's always been that way.
Oh, wait, it is.
True plus the one week delay in the release date for issue 1 probably played a factor as well.

I am so thrilled to see this issue sell out so quickly. It's a nice success story.
D'oh. When I got the email from TFAW saying it had been delayed until the 21st, I assumed that meant the release date in general. I hadn't actually preordered from TFAW. Does this mean all the stores are sold out by now? Guess it's 2nd printing for me.
Yeah, it really is Simon. We get a great issue and Dark Horse get the commercial success they deserve for backing Big Purp (even if it was probably a bit of a no-brainer). Win-win, and those don't grow on trees.

hacksaway, not necessarily. A re-print means all the copies have left the warehouses and there's still demand for more, it doesn't have to mean all the copies have left the shops so you could still get lucky if you have a Local Comic Shop to try.
The new cover looks better.
There were some left in Sacramento where I bought mine. I suggest you look around, and maybe there could be some left. That's how I got my two copies.
ETA: I saw the new version of the first issue cover. It does look clearner, and I will be getting a copy of that, too.

Simon, that link has greatly relieved me. On that page it has a link to ordering the second printing from TFAW which makes me hopeful that since it is a different page that orders placed for the first printing will in fact receive a first printing, even if it doesn't ship until next Wednesday.

I do find it interesting that TFAW is still taking pre-orders for the first printing cover at their website. I don't see how this is possible unless they ordered backups or are just waiting to send out "we're sorry to inform you..." e-mails later on. It seems that they wouldn't be able to take pre-orders on something that is technically sold out right?
I checked with my crack dealer (comic connection) and made sure they had plenty of copies. They do, but won't get their shipment until next week most likely since they order direct from Dark Horse. I'm happy to say that anyone who can't find it locally and wants a first printing should send them an email or check out their site. And it's probably someone you've already dealt with or heard of, Poplollies. I'm sure there are others who can attest to them being very nice to deal with. And they're Browncoats too!

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the 3rd version of the cover from the first printings. There's an ultra rare Jeanty "pencils only" cover version. Expect those to be the most expensive. In fact, a quick search on ebay finds them going for as much as $70.

I will calmly (yeah right) wait until my order comes in the mail.

Hm. Now I'm sorry I gave away my variant cover issue because I liked the original. I really like the second printing version. Ah well. This way I won't have to buy it.
I ended up finding a copy. I think I got the last original cover, but they still had a stack of the variant covers left. It did not disappoint.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned the 3rd version of the cover from the first printings.

I overheard my comic book retailer speaking when I was in the store yesterday. Of the 100,000 (101,000?) copies Dark Horse printed, 70,000 were the standard cover, 30,000 the variant cover, and only 1,000 the third cover. Only 100 retailers around the world got copies with this third cover. My retailer was one. He's selling his ten copies for $50 each.

I don't really have $50 to spend on a comic I already own 2 copies of.

But I was sorely tempted, my brothers and sisters. Sorely tempted.
This first issue was pretty good.I can't wait for the next issue! :D
