"Brief But Wonderful." That's how the New York Times described Firefly while touting the release of the Serenity Deluxe Edition DVD. (Registration Required)

The Grey Lady says the release date is July 31, 2007. I hope that the date, and my use of "touting," are both correct.

That's weird. July 31 when Universal Home Entertainment says August 21 and is accepting pre-orders which ship on August 19?

Hmm.
I would be obliged were someone to repost as much of the review as seems appropriate per fair use and goodwill.
This is all she wrote:

MGM releases a film noir box that includes Fritz Lang’s “Woman in the Window” on July 31, and arriving on the same day is a deluxe edition of Joss Whedon’s “Serenity,” the big-screen version of his brief but wonderful sci-fi western “Firefly.”
Nice to see a mention of Joss and Serenity in the Times. One day, there will be an entire article dedicated to him and a film he's done, and on that day I'll be turning a cartwheel in my living room and probably breaking a hip (kidding).

Yeah, and the Times will be there to review your cartwheel as "brief but wonderful."
funny, the "firefly"-link directs to an Asian movie with the name hotaru. I considered that funny.

and I want to see your hip-breaking cartwheel on youtube, tonyaJ.
LMAO, theyarescientists! This has been a good weekend in the New York Times for the 'Verse. :-)
Didn't the Times Sunday magazine to a big story on Joss and Firefly several years ago?
/makes plan to make at least one "brief but wonderful" joke later today.
Damnit, I already made my shot over the bow of the "Times" this week, now I'm sitting on my hands. Is it Sunday yet?
Not surprising. The co-author Stephanie Zacharach is the media critic for Salon.com, and she's shown herself to be a Joss Whedon fan many times over. Here's an excerpt from her Salon review of Serenity.

The "Firefly" episodes burn slowly at first, but their emotional heat intensifies as you learn to live, and breathe, with the show's characters. That's an ancient narrative strategy, and one that Whedon had clearly mastered with his earlier series, the magnificent "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and its less resonant but still deeply enjoyable spinoff, "Angel."

So...um...I'm still wanting to know which release date is right!
Cool, but sadly I don't believe in "Reg Req'd".
I'm going to wait for the definitive version from the Criterion Collection because they include everything. I just hope it won't take 20 years to get it.

Packaged with Firefly and related new and old goodies, and a separate disc for the R. Tam Sessions including me interviewing Joss and Summer about them, I trust. They can call it The Verse Cycle.
