Joss' dinner auctions net more than $52,000. The mystery now? Who is suzbrock*123 -- the bidder who won two dinner seats? (Meanwhile, combined with the other items up for bid, the entire auction brought in nearly $62,000.)

[ edited by theonetruebix on 2007-07-13 16:53 ]

suzbrock*123 won two seats for a total of $20,500.00. Wow!
Hmmm, is it speculation time? There's an author out there named Suzanne Brockmann, but I'm sure there are also plenty of suzanne brocks and suzie brocks and suzy and brock the lucky Joss-loving couple.
I don't know, but someone find out so I can butter them up.
Congratulations to the winners, and I hope that at least one of you will come and post something about the event afterwards (and we'll hope for some feed back from Joss at his panel on Saturday).
One of the winners is someone whose history shows they've bid on stuff from the California Browncoats before. I would think we'd at least get a report from that winner.
Well, on Suz Brockmann's blog, she mentions she is a Buffy fan, so it's quite possible...
well, i sort of work for ebay. tomorrow, i'll settle this mystery.
well, i sort of work for ebay. tomorrow, i'll settle this mystery.

Somehow I don't think violating eBay's privacy policy would be the way to do this.
I've got a feeling that it IS Suzanne Brockmann.

Case in point:
"I could imagine writing an episode of Firefly -- Joss Whedon's new SF show. Except now it's been canceled -- what a shame."
and "Right now my biggest heroes are Aaron Sorkin, Joss Whedon (I just finally started watching Buffy on DVD. Boy, Whedon can really write!)..."

I wish I could have afforded it. It looks like it is going to be a very interesting evening!
I'm wondering whether bidder number 13 from auction number 1 (who bid $11,000 and lost) managed to win another auction. It would be rather sad if he/she lost out while other spots went for less money.
Can someone post up the final bids, or a link to where they can still be seen, as now that the auctions are closed, the e-bay link doesn't show them (at least, not that I can see)?
They just moved down a couple inches, but might as well have it here anyway for when the pages eventually disappear.

Who is suzbrock*123

Someone who's looking to make up for not buying me a birthday present, I hope...
It would be rather sad if he/she lost out while other spots went for less money.

It would have been sadder if he/she accidentally won two auctions and couldn't afford to pay for them both, as suzbrock apparently can.

I wonder if she's going to clone herself.
suzbrock*123 is clearly an alias for Jamie Madrox. Two seats? 123 in the user name? It's almost too obvious.

This random geek moment was brought to you by Insomnia. May not cause drowsiness.

Seriously, that's an AMAZING final total. I hope everyone at the dinner (Joss included) has a fantastic time.
X-Factor references always appreciated :) I can imagine Jamie all suited up and about to walk in and then he bonks his head against the wall to make a dupe, then fixes his hair and they both go in :D
Coming this Fall on Fox:

It was the most expensive dinner of her life.

It was all for charity.

She never arrived.

We still have her food.

Quickly scanning down this thread I saw the X-Factor mention and thought "What? Simon Cowell got the seats?". Then the whole Marvel connection became clear and life made a lot more sense again.

Although I actually would pay to see a conversation between Joss Whedon and Simon Cowell. Just because of the fun.
Talking of X-Factor, how about Peter David and Joss having a chat? That's bound to be entertainment :)

And once again, Joss eloquently speaks for all of us.
The best thing is the POUND SIGN. Seriously, that made my week.
The sad thing? I actually understood everything Joss posted. I'm spending way too much time on the internet.

Nice going, Joss. How's it feel to know that your company at dinner is that highly sought after?

And, zeitgeist? I'd pay to see that conversation too. :)
It's too bad Joss isn't cooking dinner at his home--he could have had the whole Willy Wonka thing going on...

Joss--You are helping a ton of people and supporting your fans, you rock. I still think you should do the Gene Wilder, "cane stuck in the ground somersault thingy" though.

(Poor Suz Brockman is going to either blow up like a blueberry or fall into a pile of bad eggs!)
Joss has a glass elevator ? Too cool.

I'm spending way too much time on the internet.

Does. Not. Compute.

Yep, it's as if we still matter. Just like having the empire back. But with less guilt.
Joss - Equality Now will definitely benefit from this idea of yours! Great job!
Congratulations, boss. You done good.
I'm imagining everyone gathered around the dining table. What is the opening gambit? Wish I could be a fly on the wall.

Now everyone, dress pretty! No blue jeans - this is a high-class gathering.
I'm smiling ear to ear! Wonderful thing that you did here, Joss. Now, you take those fine folks out and give them your charm.
Joss, are you saving up your complete words for the dinner? Or was that a preview of the next fundraiser, Text Message Joss?

I NV U winners!
An excellent result all round - I hope the food is as delicious as the conversation is divine and that all who attend have a wonderful time!
Since my dad's name is Leo, in my pretend-dream world that is what I'm getting for my birthday....but since I forgot to put down "dinner with Joss" on my book list, I'm guessing no. :)
Congrats to the winners, and what a fine thing you've done, Joss.
Joss,I lurve you, but you're a huge dork. A generous, funny and highly sought-after dork, but a dork nevertheless. :-)

In a "when worlds collide" kind of thing, if in fact it IS Suzanne Brockman who won the dinners, the people who have run some fan-related events for her are none other than EMA Hollywood aka Events by Maya and (our very own) Allyson Beatrice, author of Will the Vampire People Please Leave the Lobby? Nifty huh? :-)
So happy about the results (and jealous)! (But I gave my own small donation to Equality Now yesterday since I couldn't possibly have bid. That and the fact that I heard a piece on FGM on the BBC the other day that had me weeping at work.)
Congratulations to Equality Now and Joss. I'm sure this dinner is going to a be a lot of fun. :)
Although I actually would pay to see a conversation between Joss Whedon and Simon Cowell. Just because of the fun.

I somehow can't imagine that dinner going down without food being thrown.

Speaking of which, in my head I imagine the waiter bringing a $52000 bill at the end of this dinner...
If suzbrock*123 is really Suzanne Brockmann the author, which seems likely, I would pay to be wait staff at that dinner! Joss and one of my favourite novelists at the same table for dinner, I don't think I would be saying a word.

Congratulations, Joss, on raising so much money for Equality Now and coming up with the idea in the first place.
I imagine two dinner seats is necessary for continued marriage/partnership in some cases. ;)

Congrats to the winners. $61,000 is a sweet figure to have raised for Equality Now.
Okay, can someone tell me what AFL-CIO is? I managed to decipher the rest of that, but I'm clueless here.

EDIT: teehee, nevermind, I feel dumb now.

[ edited by Jobo on 2007-07-13 16:44 ]
Joss Whedon has fallen before the all-consuming plague that is Netspeak. The end is nigh :(
Oh, thanks, Jobo. You were my rock. Then you got all fancy and stuff and figured AFL-CIO out. Did you think, for a moment, where this would leave your fans, this sudden reversal?

Somehow, I'm thinking "no." Go on, then, go be smart and stuff. Leave me behind in my iggy. No, no, it's fine. Go.

AFL-CIO, pal! (what'd I say?)

I'm going to be giggling about this all day.

Well... in my head I will, because they might take me away otherwise.
Hey, I gots an idea. For us yahoos with less than thousands of dollars. How about, for a $100 dollar donation to Equality, Joss answers one question from you by email here on whedonesque? We set maybe a limit- 25 or 50 people get to send in a c-note and a question, and then they get posted with Joss' answers? I could do that kind of money, just not more, and I suspect at least some of us could as well.

Now, this would have to be cleared by the whedonesque ptb as well as the main ptb himself. And we have to be polite (not that we aren't, but just saying), and Joss has to answer seriously, even while quipping crazy. Whatdyathink, guys? :-) :-)

I, too, am bamboozled by AFL-CIO. WTF is THAT?

At one time two different labor unions which merged in 1955.
Hehehee, AFL-CIO!

You're funny. He's funny!

Way to go everyone. You got the word out to the masses and Equality Now has a wonderful donation. Have fun at dinner.

woot Joss! congratulations on raising so much fundage for EN. and HAVE FUN at the dinner!
Of course, now he has to be $62k worth of entertaining. No pressure, now... I'm thinking this is going to have to include nudity of some sort.
I'm thinking this is going to have to include nudity of some sort.

Good thing he's Fully Poseable.
Oh, yeah...it was fully poseable, somewhere I'd gotten the idea that Joss was fully possible. ;)
I wonder if Joss is prescient, or if he just knows how to make some wishes come true -- he said earlier that he wanted the auction to make eleventy kazillion dollars, and some of the winners bid eleventy kazillion dollars apiece!
I'm thinking a new television series based on "Fray". Can I hear an "Amen?"
So, how do we go about wiring one of the winners for sound?
Madhatter: Amen!
And did you manage to stay awake to the end of the auction?
suzbrock*123 -- perhaps Glory and Ben pooled their money?
I have never laughed at a Glory and Ben joke on this site ... until this:

Congratulations! Wow! I didn't make it to any of the CSTS screenings this year - and this auction went way out of my league - so I just made my direct contribution to Equality Now to be part of this fuzzy Jossian goodness.

And by the way, there is not nearly enough bragging going on in here from dinner seat winners.

Perhaps that shoots down the hopes that a WHEDONesquer is amongst them.
Does this mean there are bigger Joss fans than us? (*sniff*)
It's possible that they are still sleeping? Away from the computer? Very busy people?

Don't know they won and therefore we can somehow (lemme think, lemme think) finagle it away from them? In the spirit of fair play and good fellowship!

Although, honestly, if I won I might lay low and come out only after the dinner, to avoid the inevitable spotlight and/or pressure from Big Honkin' Joss-Fans.

Congrats on raising so much money. It's really nice when this sort of thing happens.
Are there any Rainmen in the room? I wonder how $61,716.84 breaks down into per hour of Joss created t.v. enjoyment. That's just too much math for me to do for a friday evening.

I think we should be celebrating! QuoterGal, take me out for a whirl!
I finally watched the Equality Now speech on YouTube and I was truly moved. (now I get all the "why do you write strong women" jokes that pop up now and then in various threads.)

The only thing missing was Meryl Streep giving Joss an umbrella, “Human Race Protector.”
Well I did always wonder what Joss' 100th comment would be.

lol

Yes, I think the 100th comment by that Bastion of Erudition should be etched onto a bronze plaque, to preserve for ALL TIME just what Joss's writing is at its most articulate and moving.

(And to be waved in front of him at the most embarrassing possible moments.)
OK - If dinner with Joss is $10,000 a plate, how about a seat at his breakfast table for $1,000? It is the shortest meal of the day (and more importantly that would be in my price range!)

Ahhhh...Morning coffee and a conversation with Joss.

Thank you to all the lucky winners for being so generous and congrats EN!
Actually, for me breakfast is the longest meal of the day. That's why I only eat breakfast on the weekends, when I have the time for it.
Ahh, Simon beat me to the punch ... oh well ...

Happy 100th comment, Joss!
Sixty grand? SIXTY GRAND????! SIXTY GRAND?????!!!!!!

That kind of dosh tends to make one a little, um, inarticulate.
No wonder everyone, Joss included, has been reduced to netspeak.

Congratulations to the winners (EN being the biggest winner of all) and commiserations to the losers.
I am suddenly valuing Joss's FREE drinks party in Sydney a hell of a lot more!

I wonder if Joss is going to start carrying a cash register when dining with his family and friends so he can shout "KER-CHING- you owe me 10 thousand smackers!" at the end of every meal...
I am suddenly valuing Joss's FREE drinks party in Sydney a hell of a lot more!

I had forgotten about this. Stop rubbing the salt in my wounds! ;)
I'll never forget...

Hmm, now where have I heard THAT line before? ;-)
Being the math geek I am:

If we say 1 hour per episode that gives 145 for Buffy, 110 for Angel, 14 for Firefly and we'll throw in .5 for The Office.

This adds up to 269.5 Hours. So $61,716.84/269.5 =$229.00/hr.

Was this what was wanted??
Except, strictly, you'd have to take out a varying amount for adverts (did commercial breaks get longer during Buffy's run ?) BUT add in a varying amount for promos (assuming Joss had a hand in creating those). You might also want to weight the promos appropriately as "less full of Jossy goodness". Then there're commentaries and other extras.

However you slice it, it's much too hard for Saturday morning and only one cup into the day though yours was a noble attempt MrsSmith to which I extend the ultimate approbation: "That is definitely not your underwear" ;-).

(i'm happy to leave it at he doesn't owe us ;)
He could run a mid-day Serenity-themed fundraiser combining the best elements of Dim Sum and Western brunch.

"Apocholesterol."
Pointy is on to something there.
Being unavoidably MIA of late, website wise, I'd just like to thank everyone who posted on this thead for a great read and a much needed laugh.
Especially that Joss guy, even though he can't string together a complete word, much less a coherent sentence :)
