July 13 2007

Buffy #4 was the tenth bestselling comic in June.

The slightly higher position this month is partly down to the end of 52 and the drop-off in DC's follow-up, Countdown.

Seems the Omnibus got 11th place in graphic novels... I should pick that up...
Top Ten! This was due, I suspect, to sheer awesomeness.
That's *really* impressive. Yay!
Should be noted that the Graphic novel section is based only on Diamond's figures, and unlike the comics chart, they don't have a monopoly on that part of the market (so, in my opinion, the graphic novel chart is essentially meaningless).
I wish there was some way to translate the numbers that Whedon-based media sales generate to a larger forum, ie. get more people to see, as we all do, the quality and intelligence of the work.

I want another TV show damit!
Buffy continues to kick ass numerically? Excellent.
This is good. Maybe no more hiatiuses (hiati?) that completely ruin perfectly good holidays by forcing them to be spent mourning the lack of new Buffy...I know, I know, comics don't work like TV. But hey, a girl can dream. (;
Continued great news for Buffy. Hopefully it will keep these figures for the next arcs.
After getting disgusted with TFAW's long delays and high shipping costs, I stopped by one of the local comic book stores to get details of when and who and whatever. (My first time ever! Yay me, the newby middle-aged comic book geek! :D ) The clerk told me they order over 400 copies of Buffy each month. 400!! And mostly sell out, which is amazing in mostly depressed Metro Detroit. So after Buffy #5 gets delivered (probably late as usual), I will join the ranks of regular comics store visitors. :)
Congratulations cabri! It is good to patronize your local comic book store, and be sure to check out Brian Lynch's 'Spike: Shadowpuppets' and Joss' other series, 'Runaways', and soon there will be 'Angel: we aren't calling it the 6th season because it is so much cooler than that'. You'll be picking up stacks of comics!

In fact I recommend that if people enjoy Brian K. Vaughan's Faith arc for Buffy's Season 8, then they should also try reading Vaughan's Ex-Machina, Y the Last Man, and the brilliant graphic novel Pride of Baghdad (my copy is autographed, because I got to meet the very cool Brian K. Vaughan! Which doesn't make me cool, but very lucky).
Yeah, at the moment Joss and BKV are pretty much the entire comics industry in my eyes.

You may say, "Try looking outside your little perspective box, Jobo," but I'm content.
Wow! I thought for sure the sales would taper off after the first couple issues. Hope this continues.
Powers that Be, take note. Buffy still draws the eyeballs. Buffy sells comics like crazy. Buffy sells DVDs like crazy.

Please tell me why you're hoping the money pot will dry up? Have you got some neocons on your boards dead set against vampire slayers? I just don't get it. If I had the money you use to polish your fancy shoes, I'd have me a series goin'.

Explainy why we can't have a Buffyverse movie, live action series or animated series, please. Don't use the "it's not popular enough line" because obviously that's wrong.
Good.

Also very good. This has been a huge success for Dark Horse.
I second all recs for Brian K. Vaughan's work, but especially Y: The Last Man and Runaways. Both are available in trade and easy to find online or at your local comic shop, and also at Borders or Barnes & Noble.

Dark Horse must be thrilled about the BtVS sales. I hope the success of the BtVS tie in bodes well for other lost but not forgotten series getting a new life in comics, like FarScape.
Joss got me to go to my first comic book store this past weekend, too. I walked out with: "Serenity - Those Left Behind" and the first four Buffy's. Felt really, really good, oddly enough.

And I read my first (yes, gasp) graphic novel/comic (not yet sussed out exactly what to call what). You'd think it would've been one of the above...and it would have been if a friend hadn't jammed Straczynski's "Midnight Nation" (I think that was it) in my hand. Yay! Twas good.

And now that vacations are over and work has begun I think this is the special night for a curl up with my new comic novels (kind of a "necronomi-cough,cough" moment). Thanks Joss, once again, as always, with lots of feeling, baby!

Good for you, Cabri! Have you asked them to "pull" the next issue for you? Then you can be sure they have a copy for you. (I learned that highly technical geek term here at Whedonesque!)

Yes I did, and the clerk said they'd be happy to -- as long as I joined their $25 club. O.O We agreed I probably wasn't at that level of geekiness yet. ;D
That's crazy. You'd think they'd like the guaranteed sale.
Some places require a minimum number of comics be ordered to "qualify" for a pull-list (5-10 a month isn't unheard of - which at about $3 a pop is in the $25 region). It's just to make it worth their while to administer and store.

Really good to see Buffy still up there and not falling off much at all. Waiting to see what happens once Joss' arc's over but i'm fairly hopeful. Roll on August.
Gotta have Faith, Faith, Faith, just gotta have Fa-ith.
I know, Saje, but I still think it's crazy and stupid.
I just want to post again on the theme: support your local comic book store. I don't have exact figures, but my observation is that more of them are going out of business and there are few new stores opening. These stores do not make a lot of money, some of them (like midtown comics in Manhattan) do a nice diverse business in gaming and toys as well as comics, but most cannot afford to hold a lot of extra inventory. They are happy to set aside comics for their good regular customers, but holding onto a comic for someone who is only spending $3/month at their shop, when they have someone else in front of them wanting to buy it, is not terribly practical for a store owner who is scraping by. In my experience I can show up on the Wednesday of release and get my comic, and any variant cover, with no trouble, but it is true, if I'm a day or two late, I might be out of luck. But personally I love ordering from midtown comics online store, they have everything (including the variant covers) and they never gouge on prices or shipping, so I use them as my fall-back position!
I read that some people are using Amazon.com to get a hold of the issues.
