The Joss Whedon panel at Comic-Con. It kicks off today at 4.45pm PST and lasts an hour. And here's the major announcements. Ripper optioned by the BBC, Joss has written a horror movie with Drew Goddard, he's working on a short ballet film with Summer Glau and more Fray to come plus Buffy season 9 as well.

If we don't get anybody posting about what Joss said, we'll just have a party instead.

Anyhow here's some of the topics expected to be covered.

Buffy Season 8
The Serenity Collector's Edition DVD
Sugarshock
Goners
Something Big (well we can hope anyhow).

Did somebody say something about a party? I'll bring the beer!
Maybe the Something Big will be Goners! :) (Yes, I know he said probably not but well we can hope anyhow.)

Will they be showing this on G4? It won't help me here at work but perhaps they'll post a stream on their website later that I can see at home. Better than the usual murky jittery fan vids anyway.
Whitney Matheson of USA Today's Pop Candy is twittering live from Comic Con and I know she plans to attend Joss' panel, so check her twitter stream for breaking news.
What time is that it real money? Is it worth me waiting up?
Well if you live in the UK it won't finish till about 1.45am.
I am right there with Matheson in wanting a Joss episode of Heroes. Awesome.

Oh, and I am not leaving this computer for the next hour. And I am taping G4's coverage of ComicCon just incase we get to see some sweet badass Jossness.
A Joss episode of Heroes would be outstanding. I'm stuck to my 'pewter for the next couple hours too. Who needs to get up early on a Sunday anyway?
Churchies. ;)
Panel starts momentarily.

Have laptop. 1999 era early G3 Powerbook, but hey, it works. Two batteries, still at 80% (used it for an hour or so this morning).. Good signal from the cell modem - four out of five bars.

Am set.

Huge hall only about half filled. That's disappointing.

About to start. Hang on.
I feel a wave of hyper-excitement coming on...
Oh, goodie. Thanks for doing this, deanna b.
This is true dedication deanna. I would be sitting glued to the stage unable to type at all. I have tried making notes at guest talks/panels before and always utterly failed. Thanks for taking the time.
Yay, deanna b :)
Hey, there's a panel theoretically going on right now! That excites me.

And yes, and immense thank you to deanna.
You all are gonna miss God's day tomorrow. Prepare to burn.

Still, it's only eternity ...

Good signal from the cell modem - four out of five bars.

Mmmm, bars. Is there nothing they can't do ?

*awaits news of the Jossian stylee from the generous, redoubtable and hopefully bar-tastic deanna b*
Joss panel:

Scott Allie (Dark Horse editor) introduces Joss. mentions S8 BtVS, Serenity, and Sugar Shock, which is free on darkhorse.com.

Dark Horse has become a huge part of Joss' life. Dark Horse stepped up and controlled auction and provided venue for last night's charity dinner for Equality Now. Thanks Scott Allie.

Sugar Shock - Joss wearing shirt w/ some of the art.

Also doing XMen and Runaways - in home stretch of both of those, but won't end with a whimper.
The hall might only be half full because the Marvel Studios Panel started at around the same time.

New Serenity Collector's Edition DVD includes River Tam Sessions. Joss has the DVD in hand, guves it a hug. August in stores.

What has Joss done for us lately? Well, he WROTE WW, but so much for that. Goners is biggest part of his life right now. Been getting studio notes about how the script can be better. And they're right.

Drew Goddard, tall and kind of sexy, and Joss has written a movie together. This will be secret, right? Called Cabin In the Woods, and it's the horror film to end horror films, literally.

Not set yet, but it looks like sometime next year, he'll finally get to film Ripper.
Ripper! Horror script with Ultimate Drew!
Not set yet, but it looks like sometime next year, he'll finally get to film Ripper.

If he wanted to pack it up here and call it a day, I'd be perfectly content.
Holy SHITE! I think my head's gonna fly off!
Oh...My...God...
Ooh, ooh, Ripper ! Frikkin fantastic. Did he mention the Beeb, huh, huh, did he ? Or a cable channel ?

(and a film with one of The Two Drews, rulage)
90 minute Ripper for BBC. Everybody in the same frame of mind that it should happen and will happen soon. Been talking with Tony Head.

Joss is getting sick and tired of not entertaining us enough, so he wants to do things, like Ripper, that can be done quickly. Lots of creepy things in the back of his brain that he needs to get out.

Angel movie? It's called Bones, season 2. Is up for Big Damned Sequel. They made the Special Edition because people keep buying the DVDs.

Season 8 - When and if is Oz going to come back? Can't say when, but it's not a question of "if." Will happen.

Is getting to end of what wife calls his Marvel Merry Midlife Crisis.

Really wants to focus on filmed entertainment, but can't stop writing Buffy comic, almost like a drug. Not giving Brian Vaughn a huge amount of notes. After Brian, two one shots by Joss before Drew Goddard's issues.
Goners studio notes! Secret cabin horror movie with tall, sexy Drew! Ripper en croûte!

EEEEEEEEEE!
Oh my God.

Drew Goddard is only my second favorite "Buffy" writer (after the Jossness himself), so one can see how this news affects me in no particular way, and how I'm not peeing my pants at all right now.
"You all are gonna miss God's day tomorrow. Prepare to burn."

Eddie Vedder's birthday is tomorrow? Since when?

Oh, you mean that other "God". So overrated. ;)

Did somebody mention Ripper? Ripper, as in live action Buffyverse goodness?

Thank the Vedder!
RIPPER!?! Aaaaaaaaaaargh! ::Dies and goes to heaven ... revives and comes back::

Deanna, you are a goddess for reporting this.
Ripper! Joss + Drew movie! Gonners notes!

I give that a Woo AND a Hoo!
I am bouncing up and down in my seat. So much Jossy goodness and still a good half hour to go.
A NINETY-MINUTE RIPPER MOVIE!? Sweet baby JESUS! I feel like such a geek today!
RIPPER!!!!!!!!!!
And did I detect some glimmer of hope for Serenity 2 in that comment? Could the possibility exist?

Must buy Special Edition. Like I wasn't gonna anyway.
I think there may be an exemption for Vedder from the whole "worshipping false gods" thing. Not sure which commandment (though i'm fairly sure it's higher than "Don't kill folk" - which for me, I might have prioritised but y'know, i'm no Hubbard ;).

Dies and goes to heaven ... revives and comes back

Any good ? Were there bars ?

And Joss totally pulled a Copperfield mis-directionally. Mini announcement ? The big kidder ...
Saje, in my heaven there is chocolate everywhere and you don't gain weight. But I left my chocolatey-goodness heaven because I am not through watching Joss projects yet!
I'm both plotzing and schvitzing and I'm not even Jewish. That I know of.

Boy, Joss rules at misdirection.

Thanks, Deanna. *prepares to worship tomorrow at the altar of St. Deanna.*
I'm just thinking of all the fun we're going to have guessing what the plot will be and who will guest star with hopefully ASH. I'm so happy, I'm shaking.
Holy shit. Ripper. And a new horror movie. But...Ripper. Holy shit.
I have the flu to end all flues... but the news about Ripper just cured me.
verything you see, everything you feel, is something you want to express. That's crazy, that's exciting - the idea happens. It's not like you say you want to write something about lonliness and say, "Okay, there's a dwarf and there's a fairy...."

Franchising is starting to interfere with storytelling. Should be earned, never sought. Universe happens so fast, builds off of the original idea.

Has he ever been approached to do Heroes? It's something he wants to do, but not something he has time to do. The problem is he can't do just a little bit of anything. He has so many things that he needs to say next year, that he just can't risk the time.

Asked to do Numfar's Dance of Shame. He loves us, but he's not going to dance. Audience claps rythmically. No, not going to dance for us, it makes him feel like a monkey.

How does he focus? Some days it's harder than others. He's also the father of two children now, and unlike every other child he's ever met, they're awesome. Wonder Woman was catyclisman. Doesn't have ADD or Narcolepsy. Has twelve clipboards on his walls with everything he wants to do. Have to keep deadlines and priorities, but follow the muse, and work on the project that's calling you right then.

Is working on a short ballet starring Summer Glau. Called "The Serving Girl." Writing music.

Is doing more with Fray. Not sure he was supposed to say that, but "yes."
"I think there may be an exemption for Vedder from the whole "worshipping false gods" thing."

I'm pretty sure there is a loophole thanks to the "Thou shalt rock out" commandment, Saje. I'm not totally sure. Never read the Bible but I do intend to see the movie if it ever comes out.

Good job that I'm a total heathen and don't believe in any of that stuff. If I did I might be in some serious trouble, come Judgement Day. And Terminators freak me out.

More Fray? Yay! In a manly way!
Is working on a short ballet starring Summer Glau. Called "The Serving Girl." Writing music.

Okay. Hello, left field, you are certainly filled with things for us today.
Not to mention Sarah Connor screening is going on right now with Summer!
A ballet? The man is writing a ballet? While at the same time doing multiple comic book series, writing movies, doing a TV project (again, yay Ripper, the best news all year!), possibly doing a western with Nathan, and being a good husband and father?

Joss rocks.
I think my brain will explode soon. I am sooo glad I waited up for this. Not that I'm going to get much sleep now anyhoo.
Gaaahhhh. More Fray ? Gaaahhhh. And that's the good "gaaahhhh".

I love that he wants to do so many different things. I might even watch a frikkin' ballet FFS. And I kinda wish folk would stop asking him to do the dance, know it's all in fun but it is very "Dance monkey, dance !".

... guessing what the plot will be and who will guest star with hopefully ASH

Morgan Freeman.

(ah, fair casting speculation, i've missed ye ;)

Boy, Joss rules at misdirection.

Totally, utterly. I take back Copperfield, he's more like the Penn and Teller standing beside Copperfield and shouting "Bullshit !" ;).

Okay. Hello, left field, you are certainly filled with things for us today.

Well, it was, until all this stuff started coming out of it !
I have a feeling I may lose mobility in my extremities soon from the sheer amount of squeee coursing through my body right now, but while I can still type: Whitney Matheson twittered: "Joss' favorite character to write for? Illyria."
I'm glad Joss wouldn't dance like a trained animal. Asking him is kinda ickky, methinks.

But I would gladly dance like a monkey for him, if that would make him happy, which it wouldn't, to thank him for everything.

*too much new info to take in.*

Frakkin' Ripper!!!! Ballets!!!! Clipboards!!!
Definitely worshiping at the altar of deanna b right now, as a lesser god to Joss. Thanks for the play by play, it's awesome.

Ripper, more Fray, a horror movie with Drew Goddard which I will even watch, a ballet with Summer, Goners' notes and a whisper of a thread of a sliver of hope of more "Serenity". Could this day get any better??!

So, has gossi set up a website for "Cabin in the Woods" yet or is he sleeping?
This more than makes up for not being at the dinner last night.
My eyes are almost closing against my will but there is no way I'll go to bed until this panel is finished.
The Angel comic that Brian Lynch is writing. Maxi series - 12 issues. Knows where season 8 of BtVS is ending, but he knows what happens in Season 9. What happens after the fall of Wolfram and Hart, and what happens is very bad. Bigger special effects budget than on TV. Wesley? He's dead, so obviously he's going to be the star...

Did he do Firefly because he watched Star Wars and thought "Wouldn't this be cool if Clint Eastwood was doing this?" Not before, but now that he's said it, yes.

Illyria was his favorite to write for. The whole process of watching Amy at the Shakespeare readings and realizing her potential, so knew the only way to let her use that was to kill her. Joss tried to sneak in and write all of her dialog. "World With Shrimp" speech fits to music of Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds, or My Favorite Things.

Directing Harry Potter film? Yeah, he probably could find a weekend for that.

Wonder Woman question makes him twitch. She was an Amazon, not a goddess, but definitely more than human. He liked it because it was kind of like Illyria.

JMS just did a direct to DVD Babylon 5 movie, and is thinking the same way a lot of us are. What he did was what a lot of creators are wanting to do.

Upfront, from the seventies, feminism in his works.

How did he get the idea for Illyria, and is there going to be an Angel movie from the comics. Well, David and Sarah have jobs now, and they've both said that they're wanting to move on. Illyria is like Lady Capulet. Regal creature.

Does Joss want to write more musicals? More than anyhing in his life, but it's the hardest thing. It's his dream and his plan, but has been deliberately keeping it at arms length for now.
deanna b, you teh awesome !
Squeee is all I can say right now. Especially at Ripper cause that one I didnt expect!
"Frakkin' Ripper!!!! Ballets!!!! Clipboards!!!"

Who would have ever thought that those three things would one day find common ground? It's like world peace but for really strange things.

Write some more Illyria, Joss! She was the best thing to come out of season 5 of Angel, and I absolutely loved that season to begin with. There needs to be more Illyria to enjoy.

In fact, combine that with your JMS comment and create a direct to DVD Illyria movie. I'll buy 5 right now.
ahhh....more Wesley. He better not be kidding :)
Looks for creativiy and flexibility and enercy in Fight Coordinators. New generation does Matrix-like stunts, old generation does Burt Reynolds fights. Nathan and Chewitel beat the hell out of each other, and that wasn't all acting.

Georges Jeanty is great, but it just takes a long time to do art, so weekly comic not feasible. And what happend at the end of 52?

Anyone he reguretted killing? Had secret plan to bring back Tara that never came to fruition. (In Season 7, he wanted to do episode where Buffy was given a wish. You used your wish on shoes? Of course not, and Tara standing there. Was going to be about three or four episodes in. But could not make it happen. So he made it about Willow moving on instead, and that's where Kennedy came from. Oh, so that's what being booed sounds like.

Kissy th' face. (Written on back of Joss' shirt)

Loves us. Bye.
Can Wesley be Ripper's dead sidekick, please?

deanna b deserves a shiny gold star.
Wow. Thank you deanna, again, for this report. What an awesome news day.
I just noticed the Buffy Season 9 confirmation. Can this get any better?

Thanks, deanna b. VERY much appreciated. :)
*pops open champagne bottles, enough for all.*

Here, hold out your glasses, everybody.

(I'm saving a really good bottle for Goners greenlighting.)
YAY TO RIPPER!!!!!!!

When that Tony Head Interview came out from IF magazine last week and his comments that Joss was still talking to him about it,I had afeeling this would be the Buffyverse project that would have the best on-screen shot.
"Here, hold out your glasses, everybody."

Well, I am just finishing my third Carlsberg, but what the hell. Thanks, QG. ;)
OK, I'm very excited about Ripper, but where is the posting about it? I'm too excited and I don't think my brain is working, so I just see someone suddenly start talking about it...did Joss actually bring it up?

And Ethan and Spike must be in it. Make it so.
deanna b is actually there and is typing as Joss talks :) so, it's in the comments!
Would someone please pinch me so I know I'm not dreaming?
I raise my glass of diet coke to this fine occasion!
Thank-you deanna b, that was like being there but not being able to see or hear anything because you are really short and instead having a tall friend text you the panel (i.e. it - and you - ruled ;).

If we all 'text' "Encore" at the same time d'ya think he'll come back ?

Now, did he hint at Buffy S9 or did he confirm it ?

So:

Ripper (hopefully next year, 90 mins) on Auntie
More Fray
Summer Ballet
Co-write with Drew film
Wesley figures in A:Atf
Assorted Wisdom
Buffy S9 ?

Any more for any more ?
If anyone decides to tape the panel, please post up a link (if thats allowed on this website). I would really like to see the whole thing since I'm in NY. Joss would only come to NY Comic Con in my dreams..lol.
Ripper!!!!!!!!!

What great reporting. Thanks deana b. Gotta absorb all of this now.
@Harmalicious: Thanks. I was too frazzled and I couldn't find it. LOL
Ripper :)
Well, this is more than I was expecting to hear! I never thought in a million years that he'd have SO much awesomeness in store for Comic Con this year. The highlight for me is, obviously, Ripper.

Damn, I'm in such a good mood now!
OMG!!!
Juumping with joy, right now.
Better yet doing the Dance of Joy!!!!!
(also doing the fangirl - which is weird cause I'm a boy - screaming thing at the same time, as I read the other posts)

I have the flu to end all flues... but the news about Ripper just cured me.

I hear'ya; I got home a while ago with one of those headaches that you get in cold weathers, and not it's completely gone.
Thansk for deanna b for the report.

I don't think he would have mentioned Buffy Season 9 at all if it wasn't pretty much certain, Saje. Joss knows that all this information will be all over the forums and news sites before he even gets off the stage so he probably wouldn't hint at anything that wasn't going to happen. I'd say it was a safe bet.
This would qualify as "Something Big", no doubt. Time to update the listing. :D
Wow! I never expected there to be so many announcements. I can't wait for more Fray and am in total shock over the Ripper news.
themayor: "90 minute Ripper for BBC. Everybody in the same frame of mind that it should happen and will happen soon. Been talking with Tony Head."

*knocks back another glass of champagne.*

I dunno if gossi sleeping, samatwitch, but I just bought a few cabininthewoods domains. Just 'cause something'll come to me, and I'd rather have the domains already...

Hey, all you people from Europia! You must be exhausted.
I dunno if gossi sleeping, samatwitch, but I just bought a few cabininthewoods domains. Just 'cause something'll come to me, and I'd rather have the domains already...

Yeah, wondering where's gossi. Dude, wake up. Things. Happening. hahahaa
Wonderful job reporting, deanna b! Thank you so much.

Wow! Ripper, Fray, a horror movie by Joss and Drew.....I need to lay down awhile, my head's starting to spin. This is the best news we've heard in next to forever. Yay!!
Wow. I come home from working a 12-hour shift (No Internet, no e-mail, no cell phone--the down sides of my job. Up sides are saving lives and taking care of babies and having rocking chairs at work. Babies are so cute when you can give them to someone else after 12 hours.) and find all this news! I don't know what to be most excited about first. And I'm so tired that I'll have to come back and read all of this again tomorrow so I can prioritize my excitedness.

Thanks so much, deanna b!!
Hey, all you people from Europia! You must be exhausted.

Totally worth it!

And also, thank you so, so much, deanna!

[ edited by dark_tyler on 2007-07-29 02:25 ]
Hey, all you people from Europia! You must be exhausted.

Pfft, you call this exhausted ... zzzzzzzzzz. 'K, yep. Happy too though, and that's only partly the beer talking (yes, we have talking beer over here ;).

Joss knows that all this information will be all over the forums and news sites before he even gets off the stage so he probably wouldn't hint at anything that wasn't going to happen. I'd say it was a safe bet.

Heh, well for me that would probably be an irresistible incentive to make stuff up. Hopefully Joss has been less mauled by the lion of evil ;).

(S9 would be great but since S8 is already slated to be about 5 - real-time - years long i'm not exactly holding my breath for a confirmed continuation - the other, shorter term stuff is just as exciting)

Anyway, hay calling, head down ...
So I guess i shouldn't be surprised, because COmic-Con is kind of a bubble, but I nonetheless was surprised that so few people had seen Sugarshock.
Oh man!

All day I've been telling people to keep an eye on here, knowing that there is going to be a huge update.

Everyone has gone to sleep. Everyone has got a text saying RIPPER!

I think that my life may be complete!
For what it's worth on Buffy season 9, a handful of Portlanders have known that for awhile, but it came up in a hallway conversation with Scott Allie at our charity screening, and we weren't sure whether it was something we were supposed to mention outside of that.

So, it's clear that both Joss and Scott know what happens after 8, and I don't think they'd be discussing it if it weren't the plan.
(S9 would be great but since S8 is already slated to be about 5 - real-time - years long i'm not exactly holding my breath for a confirmed continuation - the other, shorter term stuff is just as exciting)

I'm wondering since the book has become an ongoing project that perhaps Joss has decided to find a Season 8 ending in there somewhere and then start Season 9 - rather than have Season 8 last for five years...
Man, Joss could teach the CIA about holding things close to the vest! I'll never get any work done tonight with all this great Whedon-y goodness buzzing around.

I bet all the Whedon fans who decided to go to the Marvel panel are going to kick themselves now. *snickers*

I thank you wholeheartedly, deanna b! Although I think my boss is somewhat less grateful. ;)
I'm wondering since the book has become an ongoing project that perhaps Joss has decided to find a Season 8 ending in there somewhere and then start Season 9 - rather than have Season 8 last for five years...

I think what Scott told us the timeframe for season 8, but I'll have to ask if any other PDX Browncoats remember what he told us.
Can Wesley be Ripper's dead sidekick, please?

I don't remember any discussion of Wesley with the Ripper announcement, but during the Angel comic part someone yelled Wesley, and Joss said Wesley is dead, so obviously he's the star. A joke but I don't think he was entirely kidding.

I couldn't log on to text the Ripper news, but obviously my services weren't needed. deanna b that was awesome.
Buffy S9? When S8 just started? Life is good, folks. Life is good.

And if Wesley does indeed figure largely...well, I'm not sure what to think. Have to reserve cheers for that later.
Thanks for the added Season 9 confirmation, B!x.

"I'm wondering since the book has become an ongoing project that perhaps Joss has decided to find a Season 8 ending in there somewhere and then start Season 9 - rather than have Season 8 last for five years..."

Pretty much what I was thinking. Maybe some of the less arc-essential ideas for Season 8 will be held over and used as part of Season 9 in order to make the current season a little shorter. It's a possibility.
The original Ripper idea was Giles, alone, solving ghostly mysteries, kind of a supernatural Cracker, IIRC. How will that fit with S8 canon? Also, between talk and action falls the shadow. Or something. Anyway, I hope this is firm and not just everybody's inclination.

And does writing a ballet mean choreographing it? And can Summer even do ballet at a professional level anymore? I thought she'd been injured or something. Maybe ballet is the wrong term for what Joss is planning.

BY ODIN!

Uh, I mean... something mroe Watchery. Like... Oh my. That is good news.
...can't think clearly, Jossy overload...

RIPPER!!!

MORE FRAY!!!

Comics, and another movie with Drew, and Goners, and Serenity and... a ballet with Summer? I thought that was called Waiting in the Wings. ;-) But hey, I'll see it because I love Joss (in a manly way) and I love Summer (in... ok, more than one way).

Dang that panel must have been exciting to be at. Thanks so much for keeping us updated in real time! (And dang it Joss must come to an East Coast con one of these days. Quit holding out on us!)
So, what was that about direct to DVD?????? Could Joss be thinking about this for Serenifly???????
I was at a Shindig till now - what astonishing news to come back to. So much of it, so wonderful. Ripper!!!!
I don't know that I can sleep!
"Is up for Big Damned Sequel. They made the Special Edition because people keep buying the DVDs."

I just can't get past that sentence. I almost had a stroke.

Thank you deanna b!
By Odin! indeed.

I am so excited!
Look! It's Joss! In all his Sugarshock t-shirt'ed glory!

And here's the TV Squad recap with a few more details and another photo.

[ edited by karosurly on 2007-07-29 04:34 ]
Ripper!!! I can't believe it! After all these years, we're getting a Ripper movie. :D

And a season 9 for Buffy too! More Fray! Wow, great news.

Thanks for the reporting.
The TV Squad report says the Giles project was set pre-Buffy but I don't recall that.It was originally going to be set during season 6 when it was going to be a series then post shows when it became a movie.
12 clip boards.

Scary!
12 clip boards.

Think of all the fabulosity!
He must have big walls.
So, what was this about direct to DVD?? Could Joss be thinking about this for Serenifly??

Good question, Lioness. Kinda' thinking that was wishful speak though I would love to see such a DVD deal take place. Just don't see it in the cards.

I loved that little perk about Joss' plans for Illyria. I think we all know he had some major character plots in that story arc only to be crushed under the WB's thumb. I'm very happy to know he still has that character in mind, in one shape or another.
deanna b, you RAWK! Thank you thank you thank you for all the incredible news!!
By the way, by the time Joss actually started speaking, the huge hall (second-biggest in the convention center, seating thousands) had filled to around 2/3 to 3/4 full, which isn't bad. Actually, now talking to others, the idiots in charge cut the room off and turned away a huge line of people, saying the room was full, when it wasn't. Most of the left side of the hall was empty, and they still closed it. Well, that sucks like a big sucky thing.

I'm currently posting from the overflow line for the OMWF Singalong. The convention had put it in a 500-seat hall, and over 1500 showed up. So they opened another 500-seat hall (1AB), filled it, and scheduled encore showings in both halls. As the SDCC staff said, they had absolutely no clue that this would be that popular. Well, duh. So I'm waiting for the 11pm showing. Hopefully this tells them something. Grr.

The TV Squad report says the Giles project was set pre-Buffy but I don't recall that.

I have no idea where they got that. That was never said
deanna, enjoy the Singalong. And don't TYPE, enjoy. We're so appreciative of your filling us in during Joss' panel.
Deanna b, yes, I would have said the room was at least 2/3 to 3/4 full for Joss' panel, and if they turned people away then that is really sad! Heroes was filled to capacity, but after that there was plenty of room for anyone to come in for BSG or the Futurama panels (yes, I was there all day long).

It was a very exciting day, but I think maybe 8 hours is too long to spend in one room!
Thanks for all the report, deanna b! Made my day!
That was a dumb move on their part, turning people away when the room wasn't full.
Squeee! Thanks deanna b! You made my night!
Wowza. Thanks unbelievably much, you women that are givin' us the skinny, the lowdown, the shiznit!

I keep sitting here saying o my gawd( which I NEVER say) to my man, and he keeps saying "more good news?". Yeah babeh.

Joss, thanks so much for the more. Thanks so much.
Well, I'm not Numfar. But nevertheless: I do the dance of joy!

RIPPER!

I'm so happy!
Note to self: Self, check out this "Ripper" thing that's driving people into spasms of joy.

Deanna, what you did here today was chocked full o' coolness.
Thanks!
Thanks deanna b! You are made of awesome.

Also: Squeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Wow. That's just unbelievable. I've changed the link over to the TV Squad thing.

Wow.

Ripper.

Something Big!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Big cheers for deannab for the coverage.

Say hello to someone who got turned away. I was fighting with Room 20 all day. I waited on line to get into the first panel of the day there when it was empty. It wrapped around outside and when I got in seats were only available in the last few rows. I decided not to camp out at the next panel in Room 20 which would have ensured my seat for the panel after, Heroes. Apparently I was the only one. When I returned to that panel the line extended further outside then it had in the morning and I was easily shut out. So I had to formulate a strategy for later in the day for Joss. Do I attend the panel before, Futurama, to ensure my seat? In an effort to see as much as possible, I risked it. I figured I'd return early and check out the line situation.

I showed up 45 minutes prior to Joss panel. I looked in and it didn't look like Futurama had packed them in. Not everyone sticks around for the following panel and there was a competing panel for the Sarah Connor Chronicles. I took a place on line and say I was a good 3/4 closer than I was this morning. It was looking good. All of a sudden, they cut the line off literally at 5 people ahead of me. I was shocked how could they possibly anticipate who would go and who would stay from the previous panel a good 45 minutes before the next one started? The only thing I can think of is that they assumed everyone would stay and they counted empty seats and kept the same amount of people on line.

It was a pretty sad scene. The Joss panel was a big reason I decided to go Sat over the other days. Even still, I have seen him speak before, what was sad were the faces of the people in Jane hats and Buffy shirts. Clearly he was their main reason for attending Comic Con as well. My gut said stick around but they were adamant about clearing the area. Comic con shouldn't be about waiting in lines and camping out. They can easily set up flatscreens in areas to catch the overflow for the main event type panels.
Hey, deannab, you got quoted over at syfyportal about Joss' panel.

You're all quoted up and stuff.
My buddy Mike was at the panel, and he took some pics.

They're blurry and grainy, but still hella cool. They can be found here, here, here, here, here, here, and here.
There was nothing in this panel that suggested Joss was thinking of a direct-to-DVD Serenity. It's just that someone brought up Babylon 5, and Joss talked about how a lot of people right now are starting to look at the many different options for doing their thing without the usual heavy encumbrances of, say, studio interference.
IMMORTAL, you and I must have been within spitting distance of each other. I was just coming up to get in line when they cut it off and said the hall was closed. I was in shock so fortunately I didn't go far. I set down my stuff off to the side and got out my schedule to look up Summer's panel. Due to the shock (I had just driven 5 1/2 hours in the hideous traffic and broiling heat to be there) it took a long time to do that. The next thing I knew they were announcing the line for Josh (of course) Whedon. I got in it, just where I would have been in first place. I got a pretty decent seat in the front half of the hall. I'd say the place ended up more than 3/4 full for the panel but it was certainly never full. It might have been if so many people hadn't left heartbroken in that 10 or 15 minutes. I heard a group sitting behind me who had been to earlier panels at Ballroom 20 talking about the same thing happening before.

This was only my third Comic-con, but things definitely seemed off from the others. I suspect that they oversold, and tried to make up for it with this more aggressive crowd management. That may have "worked" in terms of the events, but it couldn't do anything about the crowding on the exhibitor floor. I meant to go back to the Browncoat table today and actually buy stuff. But after Friday I found that I didn't have the stomach for it. They may be outsmarting themselves. People could start to conclude that the con has gotten too big for the San Diego Convention Center, and for San Diego.

I was in the overflow room for the first showing of OMWF. Thrown together as it was, with a screen that was hard to see, it was still a lot of fun. The next time I hear about one of these at a real theater that I can get to, I won't hesitate. I wholly repent of my past sins of hesitation.
Asked to do Numfar's Dance of Shame. He loves us, but he's not going to dance. Audience claps rythmically. No, not going to dance for us, it makes him feel like a monkey.

Honestly, this was one of the single most annoying parts of the entire thing. And it's part and parcel of some of the tone and attitude that cropped up here and there: People think they somehow own Joss and his creativity. It was only one example of several that reared its head during this panel.
Thanks for the pics, UnpluggedCrazy. They're pretty good actually:)

Wait, there's something bigger than this?! Be still my heart (but not too still).
I agree, b!x. I didn't join in the "dance, Rummy, dance" clapping. The people who were shouting out, especially after the line-up for questions, were out of line. A couple of the self-aggrandizing questioners were, too. Rules against this were announced before Joss was introduced, but they weren't enforced. If the very assertive hall monitors want to make themselves useful, they could enforce rules through ejections during the events rather than conducting unnecessary triage on the audience beforehand.
Yeah, wondering where's gossi. Dude, wake up. Things. Happening. hahahaa

I got a text message this morning which read 'RIPPER!'. Which was confusing, but great, to wake up to.
A side note: "Hope you're feeling better from the flu, Caroline. Wishing my best!"
*muses on Ripper happening*

*remembers he lives ten miles from ASH*

*realises he lives 15 miles from Westbury*

*EXPLODES*
*picks up dev and sells his pieces on ebay*
Ripper! Yeah, finally! Now reading this is the best way to get a happy start on an unfortunately dreary sunday. :)

25p for a left kidney (subject to Major Histocompatibility).
HEY! Stop selling my husband! That's my job!

I've already decided they should live in my home town of Frome. It already has underground tunnels and as dev said, it's only down the road.
Do you mean Joss and ASH should live in underground tunnels? That's a reality TV series for Channel 5 RIGHT THERE. Pitch complete.
Gossi, that's very Ferengi of you. But shouldn't they be sealed pack or vacuumed dried? I seem to recall that. Don't worry, dev, we'll put your pieces to rest properly.
HA! Yes, obviously my ability to type words other than those that I mean to type is still working. I actually meant film, and not live. However, now you've pitched it to me...I rather like it!
"Honestly, this was one of the single most annoying parts of the entire thing. Obviously I wasn't there (being in the UK and all) so I'm not able to comment on this particular incident personally but I do know what you mean and it's something that bothers me a great deal about certain members of any fandom who step over the line of the relationship being offered to them. People like Joss, who are very open to their fans, seem to attract this type all the more.

Situations like the calling out for Joss to dance thing often start out in good fun but there comes a point where there needs to be the good sense to see that the person really doesn't want to do what is being asked. Forcing the issue beyond that, even in jest, can come across as rude and unnecessary, which seems to have been the case here, which is a shame.

Of course, no inappropriate fan that I'm aware of has gone so far as to start selling the body parts of another fan during a panel, as far as I know. That seems to be reserved for online blog communities. As it should be.

What were the other examples? I'm in the mood to massivley cringe at what fans ask of people.
Oh Simon, sure you want to go there?
The dancing and singing thing -- I've typed words about this before, on this very website. So I won't go over it again, but I do find it annoying. Particular when Fillion has to explicitly SPELL OUT why he won't do something as people can't understand.
What were the other examples? I'm in the mood to massivley cringe at what fans ask of people.

There were a lot of long lead-ins to the questions - self-promotion, attempted creative directing of his future output, to the point of the comic book guy trying to get him to commit to weekly Buffy comics. I suspect that the kid who said Clint Eastwood in Star Wars was written by his stage dad - stuff like that. However, deanna b's transcripts conveyed the overall tone very well in that Joss handled it all. It was his show, and he's a hell of a performer.
The fans taking the dancing thing too far is very similar to how the "shut up Dawn" joke is evolving. By the end of the singalong, I was cringing at every "shut up", just as I'm sure I would've been at the calls for Joss to dance. There's always a fringe element that doesn't know when to shut the frak up.
Thanks dreamlogic, my pet name for that type of behaviour is "HEY JOSS!". Irritates me immensely. Of course that phrase can be adapted to "HEY NATHAN!" or "HEY JAMES! et al.
I haven't even had breakfast yet, and already my head has exploded with OOH:) I don't know what to say. The future suddenly looks a lot brighter. I'm gonna go have breakfast now...and then I'm gonna explode again. My head, I mean. Because of the heightened ability to grasp these literally awesome news...after breakfast. I'm gonna shut up now.
HEY SIMON! Could you phone me up and sing the Whedonesque theme tune to me please? Also, I think your name sucks, you should totally call yourself Simonette. And post more often. And set up 12 other websites. And show me your tattoos. And sign my left leg.

(And make me shut up).
@Madhatter: Thanks. I'm still under the weather but at least I can look at a screen and read words :-)
Wow!

Just, WOW!!!
oooooooooooo

So much to celebrate and speculate about.

deanna b, you're the best. I appreciate your efforts, like everyone else here!

More Fray... *licks lips*
And Ripper? *faints*
Although I started in this fandom with Firefly/Serenity I have learned to love Buffy and Angel as well. I was looking for news about Serenity ( of course ), but have learned to trust that Joss' genius will shine thru in anything he does and that I will love it.
Therefore I fully expect to love Ripper! It's brought so much joy here, I'm excited by osmosis. heh.

I am intrigued by the DVD comment, even though like as not I shouldn't be. But I'm going to hold that little bit of hope close to my heart and revel in what we are getting. :)

Thanks to deanna b for the fine reporting!
Coming in late to thank the amazing deannab and the amazing Joss. (Wow, I did not log onto the computer at all last night, I guess!)

Great stuff!

I dunno if gossi sleeping, samatwitch, but I just bought a few cabininthewoods domains. Just 'cause something'll come to me, and I'd rather have the domains already...
QuoterGal | July 29, 02:15 CET

So no Serving Girl website love? ;-)

And does writing a ballet mean choreographing it? And can Summer even do ballet at a professional level anymore? I thought she'd been injured or something. Maybe ballet is the wrong term for what Joss is planning.
shambleau | July 29, 03:09 CET

Usually, writing a ballet means the story and/or the music. I have no information on whether SG has kept up with her dancing, though she certainly has stayed in shape. I did also read she was injured, but an injury that will keep you from dancing a two to three hour ballet every night while taking class and rehearsing for the next production, will not necessarily keep you from making a movie. "Ballet" can also be a fairly general term that means telling a story through dance and music. What steps are used is not written in stone.

Let me just add my original comment:

RIPPER!!!

Ok, not so original.

Since I have become a fan of Mr. Joss, I have so wished I liked horror movies, but I really, really don't. They make me feel all yucky inside. I really really hate that feeling. Now he and Drew Goddard are writing the horror movie to end all horror movies? Damn. I was worried that Goners would be to horror-ific for me to be able to deal with. (Did I say Damn?) [little voice] Didn't he say anything about the western NF was talking about the other day? [/little voice]

I really like his t-shirt.

Hope you feel better soon Caroline.

He's looking a little too thin these days. He needs to keep his strength up! With all this stuff and a family too, he can't be eating right...
Oh... wow.

Just got online for the first time since yesterday afternoon.

Wow.

And most surprising to me is that what excites me the most is... more FRAY!!!!!

(Ripper too, but FRAY!!!!!)

Thanks for the reports, everyone!
Is it wrong that this title, Cabin In The Woods, makes me immediately think of The Evil Dead? ... be still my still beating heart.
No, it's not wrong.
Talk about being out of the loop, I'm off line for two days and come back to RIPPER! Holy shit.
I have dreamed of seeing more ASH as Giles/Ripper. This is a great day. Joss rules.
Even though I'm not there, Comic-Con has made me very happy this weekend. So much to look forward to!

I also feel for those of you who stood on line for hours only to be turned away from a room that wasn't full.

Thanks, Deanna, for the awesome reports!
Ripper!? Almost fainted when I read that. Some of my favorite news ever.
That room full thing? Last year was my first year to go to Comic-Con - I knew nothing about how they ran things, etc. etc., but if I had been kept out of the Lost panel like Immortal and others were kept out of Joss', I would have been livid. Does it take a major amount of intelligence to have people inside the room, monitoring how much space there is?

I remember, like a comedy routine, a voice like a female God above, monitoring everything, telling people not to run (and pointing people out specifically), there was plenty of room, everyone would get a seat, so it was obviously set up that this person could see how many people were coming into this huge space. I opted not to go this year, mainly for financial reasons and my heart would have broken if I had planned to see Joss and then didn't (and the Exhibitor's room was Hell on earth - sounds like nothing has changed).
@ Deanna: Thanks for the detailed reports! :) Good news all around.

@ Gossi: You forgot to add he needs to bring you fresh baked cookies. ;)

@ Tonya J: No, you're not wrong...but your statement made me think of what it would be like to see Joss work with Bruce Campbell. *sigh*
nevermind - the site hiccuped and posted twice. LOL

The title Cabin In The Woods also brings to my mind that horrible (not in a good way) flick Cabin Fever I once saw when suffering from insomnia. However even that memory can't bring my mood down today. So many good news during one day!! I hope I'm not dreaming... Ripper... Seriously?!
"The Angel comic that Brian Lynch is writing. Maxi series - 12 issues. Knows where season 8 of BtVS is ending, but he knows what happens in Season 9. What happens after the fall of Wolfram and Hart, and what happens is very bad. Bigger special effects budget than on TV. Wesley? He's dead, so obviously he's going to be the star..."

Very bad? eeeek! I hope it does have a positive side tho!
And does writing a ballet mean choreographing it?

He said he was talking to a choreographer, I think I remember.
!

!!!

!!!!!!!

Too much... too awesome... to wholly absorb! (Ripper!!) (and Summer, and Drew movie, and lots of comics... - !)

Huge thanks to deanna b for the generous live reportage! And thanks to Caroline - and get well soon - for having this site to carry such a report! And Joss, for, well, wow! (Exclamation... overload...)
I Just Wet My Pants

I JUST WET MY PANTS!!!!!!
Oh yeah, that reminds me, one of Joss' remarks about the scariness level of Cabin in the Woods: "You will lose your shit."
Zap2it has a nice write-up on the panel. Looks like deanna b only missed one or two minor things. Kudos!
Tonya J, my first thought was also The Evil Dead.

And zengrrl...I am now imagining Bruce Campbell working with Joss.

If my mind explodes, sell me for at least $12.99, okay, gossi?
cabri, thanks for that link!

He did mention Serenity: Better Days! And it is out later this year!

*huge sigh of relief*
Tonya J: No, you're not wrong...but your statement made me think of what it would be like to see Joss work with Bruce Campbell. *sigh*

Bruce Campbell was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw that comparison. Hmmmm, I wonder if Bruce is errr, mature enough to play Nathan F's dad? That would be too funny for words.

*is a huge Bruce Campbell and Evil Dead fan*
Deanna B, thank you for a brilliant and incredibly timely report on the Joss panel. Immediate gratification is underrated mainly because we hardly ever get it in life -- so great that you provided it here!

I think someone may have inferred that "Ripper" takes place pre-"Buffy" because Ripper was a previous persona of Giles. Also, if "Ripper" takes place post-"Buffy," it seems to my admittedly befuddled mind that it might conflict with what Giles is supposed to be doing during S8. I guess it could take place during "Buffy" S6, while Giles is in England, or between S6 and S7 ... ? Or it could just be the Giles character at an unspecified time, with Watcher duties going unmentioned ... Anyway, much with the happy here, and gratefulness to you for your report.

Was it mentioned (or hinted) where the Summer Glau ballet might be performed -- live or on camera?

Caroline, hope you feel better soon.
The way the line was handled in Room 20 was easily the most frustrating aspect of the con. I'd driven from LA early that morning and arrived in time for the Bionic Woman panel. The room was already full (10am!) and it wrapped all the way around the center of the convention center -- 1/3 of a mile by then. I waited in that line for about 3 and a half hours before finally getting in to see the Battlestar panel and then Joss. In those hours there were many con reps walking down the line trying to talk people out of staying "There's NO WAY you're going to get in. Just go now." After a couple hours of line waiting, there was "no way" I was going to leave it. I know for a fact that the only reason I got in to see BSG was because so many people in line ahead of me were talked out of waiting and left with their hearts broken.

I have an angry letter to write about the way the con was managed and oversold. They should have had event tickets for those big panels. I was going to leave if I didn't get in to the BSG panel, chalking up the $$ and hours spent driving down as a total loss. Hearing now that they still didn't let everyone in from that line is just ...mind-boggling. A lot of people were waiting for four hours (!!!!) and as a result, missing out on going to other areas of the con.

BUT -- Joss's panel was definitely the silver lining in all that hassle. Between seeing him, seeing the BSG panel and then Mark Verheiden's panel, I had a great afternoon and evening.
Ripper. Cabin in the Woods. More Fray. Goners. Return of Oz. BtVS S9. AtS S6. RIPPER!!

I am beyond happy. This - all of it, but particularly Ripper-oh-my-god-Ripper - is the best news ever. deannab, thanks so much for the great accounting(s). You're awesome.
Ripper... The best possible return of the buffyverse. Very, very cool.
He did mention Serenity: Better Days! And it is out later this year!

We'll see. Heh.

Meanwhile, on my way out of the convention center to head to the airport a bit ago, I scored a limited (run-of-400) edition Sugarshock concert poster.

It is very pretty.
I only got in because I cut in line with orphea. I arrived around 11:30 and hiked to the end of the line just in time to be told that not only had the room been cut off, but so had the line. Since I had driven down from LA only to see the BSG panel and Joss, my head almost exploded. Thankfully we did get in for BSG, as orphea mentioned, only because so many people gave up and left the line. That said, hearing about Ripper and Joss' desire to focus on filmed entertainment for the next few years made up for everything. I cannot wait to see what he has tucked away.

RIPPER!

So, I'm sort of hoping that as part of getting ASH on board, they agree to film locally, seeing as I'm about a mile from ASH's house, (and also Jonny Depp's new house) and I might get a chance to catch the filming.

So, so cool.
Yay!: to project updates, especially Ripper, S9 of Buffy, and so many ideas that there are multiple clipboards to capture them. All very neat.

Argh!: to asking someone to dance who has said no, to booing (did I read that right?!).

Many thanks to deanna b for sharing.
Today I come online and I get these awesome news. Finally something's happening. Cheers!
aeval: Bruce Campbell was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw that comparison...*is a huge Bruce Campbell and Evil Dead fan*

Since I don't have much to add [but I will Woo Hoo to the kick ass news from Joss in so many flavors! and THANKS to deanna b], I will say to Bruce Campbell fans that he is now in a supporting role on the new summer series "Burn Notice" on USA Network in the U.S. I tuned in because of Bruce, and I am glad I did because while Bruce appears only in small doses, it is a really good show IMO.
Late to the party, but wow, deanna b- well done! Thank you.
I guess, being a Comic Con vet, I'm just used to camping out in a hall all day if there's something I want to see. That means I was in there at 10 am and sat through some stuff I didn't want to see(which is why I bring comics and/or food to keep myself occupied). But that's the nature of the beast. Like most things in any fandom, only the most fanatical will get what they want! I was just happy that they gave out potty passes, because there was no way I could go 8 hrs without using the bathroom.

It does suck that people who wanted to get in couldn't, but it's a harsh Comic Con lesson we all learn at some point. You just gotta pack a bag for the day and plan on not seeing sunlight.
I didn't get into the Buffy sing-a-long, but thankfully the Warren Ellis panel was going on at the same time, so it wasn't a waste of time. I can see why Joss likes him.
Ripper! At:S with possibly? WESLEY! More Fray! Cabin movie! Summer ballet! More Buffy! And yetmoremoremore! ZOMG!

*Wallows in the incredible unexpected avalanche of forthcoming Joss-stuff- ness*

The fabulousity of this thread and all its contents (including the prospect of what remains to be revealed on all 12 of those clipboards) renders me agog. Peoples, 2008 is going to be frikkinfrakkinfrellin' awesome!
You just gotta pack a bag for the day and plan on not seeing sunlight.

Of course, my wait in line for Ballroom 20 included 30 minutes with the line standing in the sun outside. Heh. (For the record, I missed the Heroes panel, but I knew that would happen going in because I was wandering the floor. But I got in for BSG, Futurama, and Joss.)
I just got back from ComicCon last night. I got there at 8:30AM on Saturday thinking that was plenty of time to get in line to see the Heroes and Joss panels. The line was already outside at that point. Luckily, I was still able to get in and, thanks to a friend, got a good seat, in which I pretty much spent the whole day. I had no idea that the room wasn't filled to capacity, though... that's horrible.

This was my first ComicCon and I was pretty nervous about getting into panels, so I tried to get in line about two hours in advance for most things, thinking that was a bit extreme. In some cases, it was barely enough.

A great ComicCon moment that I don't think anyone else has mentioned here: Kevin Smith yelling "Browncoats, bitch!" during his panel. All the really obnoxious questioners should be fed to Kevin Smith... that is NOT a man to heckle unless you enjoy public humiliation.
He did mention Serenity: Better Days! And it is out later this year!

I've had my memory jogged now, and this isn't what he said. He said "late Winter" -- which matches what I heard back in June about it not coming out until January.
Waking up at 3am and staying awake, I found myself thinking about the "Dance, Dance, Dance" thing, wondering what could be done.

What would happen if a bunch of people who realize Joss doesn't WANNA dance for the people all jumped up and started doing Dance of Joy, Dance of Shame, Dance of Oh-Shut-Up-Already, or whatever?

Might that distract the chanters?

Maybe you'd have to also make noise (chant "OK I will!" or something).

I would think there would be some seconds of utter sillyness; the rest would laugh at you, but the chanting would be broken up sufficiently for the proceedings to, uh, proceed.

P.S. Um, at the risk of being a naughty citizen by asking, could anyone please direct me to a discussion forum for Things Whedony?

I find myself having things I'd like to say and ask of other fans of the BDT (Big Damn Three), but no where to do so.
tehabwa -- ask and ye shall receive: whedonesque.org
I don't know how many of you read Wil Wheaton's blog, but those of you who couldn't get into panels were in good company. He was not only there doing panels, he and his son tried to get into the Futurama panel, were about 40 people from the door when they cut off entrance. I don't know, I'm really going to have read up on whether Comic-Con makes some changes because I wouldn't want to go through this if I decide to go next year.
I wouldn't want to go through this if I decide to go next year.

But you have to go next year. By then he could have Ripper and Goners stuff to show.
It does suck that people who wanted to get in couldn't, but it's a harsh Comic Con lesson we all learn at some point. You just gotta pack a bag for the day and plan on not seeing sunlight.

Rouge Slayer, I'm glad your plan worked for you. But note that I got in, too, with a pretty good seat, arriving only 45 minutes prior, without cutting. The complaints are that a) people were wrongly informed that the hall was full and went away disappointed, and b) the hall wasn't full for Joss's panel, when it might have been. That was due to the staffers' misinformation. It wasn't business as usual, as far as I've seen before.

I'm sorry to keep harping on this, but I thought the points had gotten fuzzed up a little.
Pity they can't do a webcast of the panels.
Webcasts would be awesome.
OK why exactly was Kevin Smith shouting "Browncoats, bitch!" during his panel?
I'm assuming its somehow related to the Good Will Hunting II: Hunting Season joke in J&SBSB, "Applesauce, bitch!", though whether literally or etymologically, I wait to hear :)
As excited as I am about all of this news, particularly the Fray stuff, I have to wonder who will end up doing the artwork for the new stories? My hope would be for Moline to return, especially since he's not tied down to any monthly books at the moment, but you never know.

Fingers crossed.
Will someone PLEASE tell Joss to get on the stick with Goners? I mean really, I'm still losing my shirt over at the Hollywood Stock Exchange! It's embarrassin'!

"OK why exactly was Kevin Smith shouting "Browncoats, bitch!" during his panel?"

If Kevin Smith is not a Browncoat himself, he's a booger. =P
