Have a look at the Serenity Collector's Edition DVD packaging. No, not the cover. This is a look inside, from a reviewer who has received their screener copy.

Holy fuck. That image with River and the axe and and...

Avert your eyes: Squee.
This reviewer now must tell me in what order Session 416 is presented, since I'm sure I haven't convinced UHE to send me one so I can see for myself.
Wow. After seeing that, I just might have to go get a copy. Does anyone know the release date for it?
And the ax and River...ekk! Great stuff.

Looking forward in this purchase, ordering two. My little niece will trip when she watches the full version of Session 416. I'm just a mean, blued gloved devil;)
I've just realised I've gone from petitioning UHE about the artwork from the first DVD set to swearing (in a good way) about how good the artwork is here. This makes me a better, happier person.

August 21.
Oh merciful Poseidon, it's beautiful! I especially like the group shot. One, it's got the Operative, and two, it doesn't have River doing strange yoga poses. Now, River's a very flexible and limber young lady, but some of the images they used for her in the non-Charlie Sheen looking posters, they just seemed exploitive. Now she's just a badass with Reaver weapons.
BringItOn BringItOn BringItOn..... :)
BringItOn BringItOn BringItOn..... :)

Hmmm... wrong movie? LOL (Although, it would've been fun if Glory and Faith were also in this movie)

I WANT! SO VERY PRETTY! ORDER, NOW!

That's not the wrong movie. It's a line from Mr. Universe. ;)
So you're saying River's poseable? Someone stop my heart from racing!

Ooops my bad. Must punish myself with five sequential re-watching of the movie and remember to memorize the script (use Serenivy Companion as Companion).
Way more shiny than I had expected. Two extremes in DVD packing for this movie, I must say.
Shiny!

I'll be adding it to my collection. Even though I've already got the original DVD.And the HD-DVD.

Poseable you say...?

Amazon.com have the front cover image.

Can someone tell me what features this DVD has that the other one did not?

I don't want a list of special features, just new special features. The only two major things that didn't sound like I had seen them before were the new cast commentary and the River Tam sessions.

If you've seen the R2 or R4 editions, than these are the only new to you things. If all you've seen is the R1 edition, then much more is new.

ETA:

Although the Sessions shouldn't be new to you, except in the sense that they've never been on DVD before.

Waaah! I don't have a copy of Serenivy Companion. I'm feeling some Serenvy, I guess.
I haven't seen the River Tam sessions because I wasn't a fan until after the movie came out. Serenity was my introduction to the verse.

Ah, well, here. (Also, a hidden black-on-black link there will take you to a rather lengthy discussion of/backgrounder on them.)

Actually, the Sci-Fi Channel Special thingie is also a new extra, I think, for people with R2 versions or R4 versions.

In time. Out of Curiosity, for whoever might be interested in those useless trivia. Brazilian R4 version, was released with two covers, sort of. At first it was released in the same cover as the Australian version, but with red coloration and foil effect on it. Later, they released it in the more traditional blue tone, without the foil effect.
The Extras included were a mix of the other releases:
* A Filmmakers Journey
* Deleted Scenes
* Outtakes
* Future History - The Story of Earth That Was
* What's In A Firefly
* Joss Whedon Introduction
* Feature Commentary
* Easter Egg - We'll Have A Fruity Oaty Good Time

One of these days, I think I'll take a picture of the different versions I own and psot it in the Library.

Argg... typos... Serenity Companion...... must review more before I post... must review more before I post...
But QG, couldn't miss the chance for a little joke on my expense, right? :P

Was there a "first read through for the movie with the cast" in the R2 and/or R4 version?
Thank you, whedonesque.com, for fixing whatever the problem was with posting etc.
I had already ordered mine through Universal, I hope they send it soon! I have the excuse that someone ran off with my 'Serenity' DVD so I'm in need of a replacement anyway.
Well I'm going to wait until I get the DVD to watch the sessions. I'm a sucker for commentaries so I'll be getting it just for that, but I was just curious because in all honesty it seems like the same DVD release with two new features which is not the type of message I like sent to the fans usually.

No offense to anyone out there that might have had a hand in it or is looking forward to this release more than I, but I don't like when a company holds back stuff with the intent of double dipping into the fanbase of their properties. I understand the commentary is brand new, and again I will be getting it for that, but it leaves a bit of a sour taste in my mouth.

Maybe it's just me.
Was there a "first read through for the movie with the cast" in the R2 and/or R4 version?

It's not the entire read-through. It's a portion of it in one of the featurettes. (Which, for the purposes of this question, is a "yes".)
Look at that packaging. That is not going to show up at Blockbuster or Netflix. Unless for sale at Blockbusters.
it seems like the same DVD release with two new features

Except that it's not just two, if we're comparing the original US release and this US release.

Plus, no llamas.
Superrodan: "I don't like when a company holds back stuff with the intent of double dipping into the fanbase of their properties."

I don't think Universal did it deliberately in this case. They seemed perfectly happy with the way it was until we wouldn't stop buying the darned thing, thus ruining all their DVD sales projections for the past year and a half. They get really cranky when their projections are out of whack. ;-)
Ah, Numfar PTB, it was meant in the kindliest of ways.

I myself deeply appreciate the return of my ability to edit on whedonesque - the past few days, I was dropping typos like candy on here, and it was killing me.

Now, back to our regularly-scheduled llama.

ETA: Nothing to see here. Move along.

cabri,

Yeah! I bet their DVD sales projections for Serenity were 0 for most of 2006 and all of 2007 like most of their "old" movies.

Also I wonder how many movies Universal has that are still getting Theater Box Office money two years after release!

imdb.com US map of Serenity Screenings

And how many movies are getting Official merchandise money and new merchandise contracts two years after release!
I just squeed. Literally, I squeed. My rabbit's ears perked up sky high. I'm sure car alarms are going off and dogs are barking.
Spooky, my glass of water just shattered.

I hope you plan to pay for it. :P
At long last official confirmation that the Sessions are meant to be viewed in release (and structurally proper) order.

Phew.
Superroden, charge it to my Whedonesque tab. :)
I can't seem to find that feature so I guess you're off the hook for now.
Also, I just wanted to say bix that your humor does not go unnoticed in the tags.
Hey, my bunny's ears are perked up too!

Squee! You can click on pics and see them larger and snag them!!! Squee!

Oh, oh, bunny ran away.
b!x,

Universal home entertainment is sending me a Serenity Collector's Edition.

Universal home entertainment is sending me a Serenity Collector's Edition.

Yeah yeah, I have one on order too. :P

I was trying to parlay some things into an advance copy. (I mean, can you blame me?)
Double dip? Only applies to those who thought about buying the first, will think again about buying the second...and pass that up, too.
I still want to know who ran off with my copy of "Serenity!" I want to thank them for giving me a good reason for buying the new release.

Then I want to kick them.
I don't have mine on pre-order. I just plan on picking it up the day of and anxiously wait to go home and watch it over and over and over. That's all.
40 odd posts on the interior DVD packaging? Excellent. It's nice to have Whedonesque back to its normal self.
God, that looks amazing.

I seriously cannot wait.
It's nice that you guys got us back to normal, Simon. I guess it's mostly Milo to thank, though he never posts?

I can't think of anything positive to say about the special DVD, not because it doesn't look very nice but because everybody will already have theirs before I get it. It's the Serenity theatrical release all over again. I'll be out of the country, (just shortly) but when I get back and get my copy, everybody will be talked out about it. I'm envious and petty.
Well, think about us 'poor' unfortunates that are always "out of the country" ;).

I suspect i'm not going to wait for a hypothetical (albeit very likely) future UK release and so will order from the US.

Plus, no llamas.

This is NOT a plus ! Sure, we're all dead set against bigotry of any kind except anti-Llama prejudice ? Inadvertent DVD Cover Llamas of the world, rise up ! Unite against your oppressors ! Generally be a bit like smaller, less stroppy Camels !

Looks very nice. Is it just me though or are the images air-brushed even more than they usually are ? Maybe it's just because they've played with the lighting but everyone's face looks slightly less characterful than i'm used to.
Oh, no llamas? *Sighs*

Gotta have llamas! Fortunately, I still have some DVD-size llama pics from the old board to fill in that gap. :-)

Everything else sounds great...can't wait!

Ditto, just replace UK, with Brazil, and the "likely" with "unlikely". Ordering mine, it'll will take about 15 days to arrive down south here, after the release date.
I can't wait to get a copy ! Is it just me... or is Mal missing from the little pictures on the part where the dvd goes? They have the Operative instead? Seems odd.
if we bring extra collector's editions, can we come visit our "out of town" browncoats and sleep on their couches?
Who is standing behind River and Jayne? It looks like Luke Skywalker to me?

I had thought that there was going to be more of the first read through than is on the R4 edition. There isn't?
Luke Skywalker ? That's just daft. It's clearly Connor Macleod. Right ?
So glad I pre-ordered already.

Think sales would have been higher at first had UHE used this as the original packaging?

I shall not miss the llamas.
Any news on a region 2 release date?
>40 odd posts on the interior DVD packaging? Excellent. It's nice to have Whedonesque back to its normal self.

It's so nice to be able to post again. I just got tired of trying so didn't bother for a week when it wouldn't work reliably.

I like the new key art. MUCH better than the original.

I've got the Australian Serenity DVD so the only thing on this disk, that is not on that will be the cast commentary, the R Tam sessions and the scifi channel thing, right?
>Any news on a region 2 release date?

Isn't this new disk for US release only?

It'd be great if they'd release it world wide though. More sales!

I bought a region free dvd player just so I could watch the Australian version of the Serenity dvd. Laugh
I had thought that there was going to be more of the first read through than is on the R4 edition. There isn't?

I don't believe so. I think this impression comes from a mis-read of something Joss said in a recent interview.
Just posted a complete list of what will be on the new discs with a rundown of what has appeared elsewhere already.
Thrilling packaging! And thrilling content. I have the first (US) version and need no excuse to buy this version. As Chris in Virginia has said/written, "Want. Click. Have." Short of bidding thousands for a meal with Joss to honor charity (can't cough up that kind of dough), I usually give in to satisfying my whedonverse material lust if at all possible. Life is too short to do otherwise.

I wonder if there will be a new Easter Egg or two in this edition?

Count me in with all who are relieved to have whedonesque.com back in fine form. I missed it. Lack of whedonesque access makes me cranky and twitchy. Thank you to the fine person (Milo?) who solved the problems. Thank you.
My copy has been pre-ordered for weeks. I'm so happy to see that the product design is so much better throughout. I can't wait to get my copy and to see all the new things, and to listen to the new commentary. And, since I've just about worn out my original DVD, it will be nice to have a spare.

And I, too, am happy to have access to the black again. Thanks, Milo.
The fact that there is just SO MUCH more content means for me, that it is a justifiable buy. If it was one or two things extra, I don't think I could have justified buying it, as I already have the first one.
Just got a mail from PlayUSA that mine is in the post! Woo Hoo!

(Erm - not saying how many different versions that makes it that I've bought...)
Just got a mail from PlayUSA that mine is in the post! Woo Hoo!

Yeah, I was afraid this was going to happen. That bright idea some of us had about pre-ordering directly from UHE? We'll probably be the last people to actually get them. Heh.
Thanks C A Bridges that's a very helpful summary.

And thanks Kiddo, your deeply evil act of temptation has forced - forced I tell you ! - me into buying the CE from PlayUSA. I may also have semi-advertently pre-ordered the Babylon 5 DVD from PlayUK too.

I don't know how you sleep at night ;-).
Remember that other reason for buying the DVD. The Serenity Collector's DVD is the hope for more Firefly/Serenity.

One day it is gonna happen.
Very helpful C.A Bridges. Thanks.
I'm so getting this!!! The art work is very nice, and I look forward to hearing the new commentary!! Only $18.89 on Amazon, not too bad :)
You know, it occurs to me that aside from 10 Things I Hate About You or even Ray, this might be one of David Krumholtz's best selling movie DVDs. I'm definitely not counting Numb3rs cause I bet that's sold really well. I own the first two seasons.
Humphhhh!!! Amazon is telling me it won't ship until something like 27 August... grr arrgh.
So numfar, what's your beef towards llamas'?
Kirochka,

Whoo-hoo, I wonder if the late ship date means Amazon had to place another order! Sold out on first order!?!

http://homevideo.universalstudios.com/details.php?childId=36897

You can still get one direct from Universal says ship date 08/19/2007. I ordered one direct from Universal as a thank you and more please! I'll also be picking up some Christmas presents at Best Buy and wherever else I can find it.

So Madhatter, are llamas considered beef?
Currently, The BDCE is #39 on Amazon's Bestseller list :)
Agg! The link's not working for me!
It didn't work for me originally when I tried a few hours ago, and it still doesn't now.

ETA: Seems the server is down?

So Madhatter, are llamas considered beef?

Good question, researching.
Llamas are not beef! No eating of llamas, please!! They are adorable and eccentric, even if they do spit at you on occasion.

As for the Collectors Edition, they had me at "sixty minutes of new material".
