Astonishing X-Men #22 Reviewed. The latest Astonishing X-Men has been reviewed by Tyler. Minor spoilers included.

The last two pages were among the most incredible I have seen in a long while. Bravo Joss for making Scott a character I look forward to every month (or every two months as the case may be). And of course Cassaday is the best penciller in the business now or ever. (I am awaiting Planetary #27 on pins and needles.)

Notional Spoilers (and the "Real" Kind) Follow: Surely the end of the story is just a story that Scott et al. are telling the Breakworld. The dialogue, of which Joss is acknowledged master, is stilted in these final pages, with Kitty speaking in Robert's Rules of Order: "I object!" This is at least a diversion, at most an inspiration to the Breakworlders to see what Aghanne sees, that it doesn't have to be this way. The all-too-pat Christ-like self-sacrifice of Scott is . . . meant to be unsatisfying. We've seen the hero lay down his life before, and it doesn't actually solve things. But the dissent into the land of dead cliche--"Our ace in the hole" "Leviathan?" "You're not just gonna throw your live away" "What have we done?" "Give 'em hell"--is a tipoff. Right? Isn't it? The X-Men have employed Danger to project a story to Kruun via the Breakworld transport's "eyes"? No?

A great issue and yes those last two pages were amazing. It really doesn't get much better than this. Does anyone know when the next issue comes out?

#23 was originally scheduled to come out a week before #22 actually came out.

#24 has not yet been solicited, which means December at the very earliest.

Amazon has the Unstoppable TPB, which is to include issues 19-24 plus Giant-Size Astonishing X-Men #1, slated for Jan. 30, 2008, release, though publication dates are not set in stone (unlike Breakworld prophecies).

I do agree that something seems off, Pointy. I think there was too much from Scott's point of view for his sacrifice to have been something the X-Men faked, though. I'm still not sure what to make of Emma and Danger's bargain. What would Emma offer Danger?
