A SFX magazine interview with Nathan Fillion. A great way to start the week.

"I keep at least one friend from every job I've had. With Firefly I was so blown away by the family Joss assembled, and I don't mean just the cast - the crew as well. People were handpicked, he took all the best people from all the shows he'd down and assembled them for Firefly. I just got to reap all the benefits, so here I am with the entire cast kept as friends. Focus puller, cameraman, prop guy, writers, make-up ladies, all these people! There's about 30 people who I've kept as friends that I keep in touch with an invite to barbecues. I make sure that I put in the work in those friendships. And from all the shows I'd been in, I keep one friend."

This is pretty much exactly what Jewel said in the GateWorld interview. You starting to get the impression these guys kinda liked each other? ;)

And, regarding the Hulk movie? Could NOT agree more!

By the way, the "down" typo in Nathan's quote above? Not mine. :)

EDIT: To correct another typo that I actually WAS responsible for. Note to self... either stop reading your old comments or stop being so damn anal!

Well, he and I totally disagree on Superman Returns, but we are both on the same page as far as Children of Men and The Office are concerned, and that's what matters. :-D
Oh, i'm so with him on 'Superman Returns'. Yes, it was too long, yes , the Jesus stuff was a bit heavy handed but it was, undeniably and without fear of contradiction, Superman. Singer really gets it, he knows you don't grit Superman up, you go in totally the other direction and his clear affection for the character and the first films shone through and allowed me to see past the saggy last third and the slightly lacklustre performance from Kate Bosworth. It was almost like the 6 year old me was sat in the next chair and Bryan Singer, via the film, effectively wandered along, ruffled his hair and told him everything was going to be OK. Hooked me from the credits, through the various homages ("it's still the safest way to fly" being up there for me ;) right to the end.

And I agree that 'Children of Men' looked absolutely stunning. Emotionally the film didn't touch me as much as I think it was meant to but the cinematography was a thing to behold (and even Clive Owen did well - though that sort of relatively uncharismatic everyman is virtually made for him IMO). Good film that might become great when I re-watch it on DVD.

Decent taste that Fillion fellow ;).
Children of Men was my favourite film of the year back when it came out. 'cause, seriously - it was oh so good.
Nathan who? Was he in something I may have seen?
Are you kidding ? We're all huge "Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place" fans here, right ?

Why, what else has he done ?
Saje,

You filled out the Amazon alert for the Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place" DVD, right?
Just some crappy skiffy show by that same guy who did that other crappy cheerleader show.
Once again Saje, you earn my platonic man-love. Superman Returns gets altogether too much shit. I think you summed it up perfectly... although I disagree that it was too long. Generally speaking I think the longer a movie the better.

And Children of Men? Fantastic movie that just gets better each time I watch it.
Hmm, I'm starting to think Superman Returns was just a real boy movie, not that that makes it bad. I enjoyed it but it couldn't take me back emotionally to being as young as when I was thrilled by Superman. Children of Men by contrast made me all involved and teary. I think Cauron makes girl movies even when they're full of loud explosions and horrible injuries.

Clive Owen is an everyman? That would be nice.
I think I remember that crappy cheerleader show. It didn't completely suck.
Whilst I am a huge Superman/Superman 2 fan, Superman Returns was dull. Really dull. I adored the scene when he rescued the aircraft but the rest? Not so much. I tried to watch it again on DVD but gave up half way through. Also when you hire Kevin Spacey to play DC's best villain, give him a decent plot line. There is a difference between being faithful to the first two movies and recycling the first two movies.
Agreed, Simon. Superman Returns was visually stunning but a big YAWN, overall.
Whatever blows your skirt up I suppose. Personally I was more interested in the father/son story and the emotion involved in that than in any kind of big, exciting superhero action. And while I agree that the plane rescue was awesome, my favorite scene was at the end when Superman visits the sleeping Jason and whispers to him the same words his own father sent to earth with Kal-El. *shrug*
I think the worst thing about Superman Returns is that my dad watches it on HBO whenever it's on and he's home...and at the end just sighs and says it should've been better. Even though he liked it!

I just wish it could've made the dude who said the 1978 Superman was the only movie he's ever hotly anticipated happier.
I don't particularly like Superman or Superman II, yet I loved Superman Returns. What kind of sense does that make?
Yep, totally Haunt. The updating was all about providing a deeper, more solid emotional core. The father/son thing (which will presumably and hopefully develop in the next film) and the humanity of his feelings for Lois grounded it. The hardest line for Singer/Routh to tread was making him a man while keeping him a superman and I think they did a great job.

(and the decision to have darkness without darkening him was also effective IMO - when we see him reduced by Luthor and his goons, figuratively dragged down to our level it's genuinely sickening I think)

Re: too long, parts of the last third dragged a bit for me though I don't mind long films at all. There's just a difference between 'long' and 'too long', some films are 'too long' at 90 minutes, others you want to spend an afternoon with (e.g. 'Dances With Wolves' long but not too long, it never drags, it feels measured rather than slow. 'Return of the King' OTOH, long with added "Will you frikkin' end FFS ?". Didn't help that I needed the loo ;)

You filled out the Amazon alert for the Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place" DVD, right?

Totally. Did you join in the anchovy campaign to ABC Anonymous1 ? In retrospect maybe not such a great idea (especially from this side of the Atlantic) but I think it left a lasting ... impression.
While, sadly, I do not have anything to add to the Superman Returns discussion, I just wanted to say that this:

Fillion: "I also have a DVD to learn American sign language which I try to watch now and again, to try to pick up some American sign language, I think a second language is always good."

makes me love Nathan even more. If I ever get to meet him, I'm totally going to sign to him. I bet he'd get a kick out of it.
Saje,

Nope, no anchovy campaign member here. Really hope that did not happen. Signed up for the DVD alert too.
Succatash, those "Marvel/DC" things are great.

Though there have been several more episodes than four. Y'all should go to ItsJustSomeRandomGuy's profile on YouTube and check out all the greatness.
