Over here there was a 90s sketch show with a riff about a guy that always says the wrong thing just before "closing the deal" - the punchline was "Oh no, I've just blown a definite shag", this strikes me as a similar sort of deal.
It's more like "there but for the grace of God ..." than "What a moron".
