March 15 2008

Neil Patrick Harris working with Joss Whedon? Right at the end of this interview, Neil says he's appearing in a musical web short called "Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog" written and directed by Joss. (Possible spoilers for the new Harold and Kumar film)

Did someone purposely conspire to make my head explode with glee?

If so, thanks.

(And to be clear...he wasn't joking about the short, right? Just about Dancing with Stars?)
Wow!! Didn't think I could love NPH more :) guess I was wrong.
I also wondered if he was joking about the short as well as Dancing with the Stars.
...If he is, that would be cruel.
I can't tell, UnpluggedCrazy. It's hard to imagine Joss having time for that just now.
Hmm, can NPH ride a horse ?

He seemed serious about that bit and Joss did talk about internet shorts etc. while the strike was on - assuming he wrote it and got the people together then, they'd only actually have to film it now, which though no small task, might be doable in a couple of days for an experienced TV writer/producer/director and a similarly experienced set of actors (don't they normally do about 6-8 pages per day ? Or about the length of a short ?).

Then he could edit it etc. in his spare time (yep, if you're reading Joss, the "spare time" comment was just to give you a laugh ;).
What would NPH do?

Awesome.
I thought he was joking.
Too bad they don't have THAT part in "amazing sound-o text"! But yeah, seems to me that whole bit was the joke...
Maybe "Doctor Horrible's Sing-a-long Blog" is the ballet.

OK, not too likely.
So, I can totally confirm this, but don't really want to say anything because Joss hasn't announced it and I don't want to be THAT guy.

Also, extra special treat in it for Browncoats and others...

Bob }-)~
Hah, jcs, I wondered the same thing. I highly doubt it of course, but I can't actually confirm that it isn't yet.
I think he might have been joking about the title.

Although this is Joss. So probably not.
NPH- totally joking. About both things.
The Ballet has the title 'The Serving Girl'.
Neil Patrick Harris: "I’m doing a web short film that Joss Whedon is directing and wrote called DR. HORRIBLE’S SING-A-LONG BLOG. That’s a musical about super villains and crossing my fingers for the next round of Dancing With The Stars. (long pause) No..."
I have to say that I would love a musical about super villains with NPH, and Joss is just the man to do it. I hope it isn't completely a joke.
Ah jeez.

Seriously, it's not a joke. Title et al is true. Okay, I suppose I'm not Mr. Established Credibility, but maybe when this is released I will be. Will anybody be upset if I say I told ya so? Cause I will, really. Maybe not out loud.

Ya know, you try to brighten people's day... {-)~

And once more: There's a very happy surprise regarding this for Whedon fans, specifically Browncoats. Though since no one believes it's true, I suppose the whole thing will be a very happy surprise!

I don't suppose it'd interest anybody that they started shooting today?

EDIT: Umm, I don't have any knowledge about the Dancing With the Stars comment.

Please don't make me start another website, Bob.

*headsdesk*

I just realised, if this turns out to be any - you know - good, it could totally be used for fund raising purposes.

[ edited by gossi on 2008-03-15 18:01 ]
I read it as a joke, but heck, this is the wonderful world of the internet.

Joss could read it over here, and suddenly tunes pop in his head, a quick phonecall to Aly telling her to arrange a trip to the HIMYM set, an approch on NPH at the craft services table when he is particually happily full of some kind of sandwich, and PRESTO! DR. HORRIBLE’S SING-A-LONG BLOG is in the works!
Hah! Gossi, what websites you choose to create or not is totally up to you, I'll have no responsibility for it. Funny though, that'd be a really long URL...

I'm off, I look forward to returning later to a large round of skepticism!

Bob |-)~
Huh. Guess this needs adding to Twelve Clipboards then.
bix, why aren't you working on CAN'T STOP DR. HORRIBLE’S SING-A-LONG BLOG NOW yet?
I think it's about Whedonesque and Neil is playing me. I'd settle for David Anders cause he also looks like Neil Patrick Harris.

Also Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-Long blog is a bit of a bugger for a Whedonesque category.
This is so very strange that I suspect there's truth in it. Also, Bob seems pretty adamant on that point.

Simon is Dr. Horrible? Are people singing their comments and I didn't know?
bix, why aren't you working on CAN'T STOP DR. HORRIBLE’S SING-A-LONG BLOG NOW yet?

Because I just woke up?
I believe NPH is playing Saje. Or Morgan Freeman. (Sorry).

Let's face it, as soon as I saw that title I was all 'Either Neil Patrick Harris has Joss' sense of humour, or that's a Joss title'.

Bix - slacker.

*taps fingers*

"You join chat rooms, you write poetry, you post Doogie Howser fanfic."

It's a full circle lol

Maybe Joss saw this?
I suppose I should watch Harold and Kumar... I love NPH in How I Met Your Mother. And anything to come from Joss is bound to be pure genius. More Joss, please!
I think NPH is a perfect fit for Joss's more wacky side. :) And I thought it was hysterical he was being the elder statesman to Cho and Penn's cluelessness when I remember the premiere of Doogie Howser, MD, and thinking NPH didn't even look old enough to be in high school. ;-)

Where's the nearest Church of NPH ? 'cause I wanna do some worshipping. He's so right for Joss' sense of humour, and I hope the answer wasn't just an elaborate joke. I think the Purple One should shed some light, perchance.. here ?
I think Neil was kidding, but the idea of a super-villian musical? He better produce that before Adult Swim does.
And why wouldn't he be a fit for "Dancing With the Stars'? Better him than Tucker Carlson.

[ edited by impalergeneral on 2008-03-15 21:36 ]
the idea of a blog where a super-villian hopes to be on "Dancing With the Stars"?

He was referring to two separate things. A project with Joss (which at this point I trust bobw1o on), and Dancing with the Stars (which he was kidding about).
Although Dancing With The Stars does have a habit of killing Tim Minear's shows. If I was going to be a super-villian, my home base would TOTALLY be the set of that show.
This is good news. New Jossy musicality. On the webs. With Neil Patrick Harris. Okay, I haven't actually seen anything with Neil Patrick Harris, that I can remember. I've heard him make fun of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory on Rifftrax, but I don't think I've actually ever seen him in anything. Perhaps I should. Anyway, awesome news. Looking forward to seeing the results.

EDIT: Oh, I've also seen a fictionalized version of Neil Patrick Harris appear in a comic book about - that's right - Jay and Silent Bob. As the director of adult film "Doogie Nights". But that doesn't count, as it was just a fictional representation of him portrayed by a drawing.

That's my take, too, b!x.

NPH - I have always loved him extra since he confessed to an undying love of MST3K and appeared on a short MST3K promotional special...

Searching for "Dr. Horrible" brought little information, but did net numerous hits of 19-y-o boys using it as their myspace names; however, I did find Dr. Terrible's House of Horrible which was at least amusing...

Sometimes I think you Brits really get all the good shows, but then I remember the Whedonverse and BSG and stuff like that, and then I feel better.
Oh is this the thing Nathan's doing?
hacksaway, why do we think Nathan is doing something?
I heard something as well. Thought it might've been about Dollhouse, but it must be this.
What did you hear? Where did you hear it? I have no idea what you are talking about.
Nathan's doing a thing? Is this the thing he's doing? Nathan's doing this thing?

Otherwise... NPH + Joss + musical = WTFAWESOME!!
How do Nathan and Joss go to supermarket without there being blogs about it? That's what I want to know.

This post is actually a joke, but in writing about it I just googled - there's a blog about Nathan going to the supermarket. He wore a hat.
Poor Nathan. I'm sure hacksaway is just pulling our leg or having his pulled. I would just like to know the source.
I could well imagine they're spot on, TamaraC.

To connect the dots on this one - during the strike, Joss couldn't write for WGA struck companies. He could write if he wanted to do an internet indy thing. He said he wanted to do an internet indy thing with his friends, maybe take it around festivals, maybe put it online. Joss loves musicals. Joss was on strike. Joss loves a strike musical. Joss knows Neil - Neil works with Aly on HIMYM, which Joss is known to lurk on the set of. Neil knows Nathan, as does Joss. (Er, spot that exclusive? Joss knows Nathan. You heard it here first).

Oh, and the essential detail: Nathan wears a hat in supermarkets.

The conclusion to all this: R Kelly's In The Closet, move over.

[ edited by gossi on 2008-03-16 00:59 ]
Irrefutable logic, gossi. :) Don't sue me if I wait for THR or Variety.
Suit up !

I did think of the (ironically) inimitable Steve Coogan when I first read the title but it's random enough to be real and too random to be made up IMO. That plus the testimony of bob1wo pretty much seals the deal.

And though i'd love NPH to play me (cos then I could wonder "What would I do if NPH was me ?") it just wouldn't be the same without Morgan Freeman.
Me likes gossi's logic. And NPH's, too!

And, on the plus side, Joss has been awful quiet lately. Last time he went MIA we ended up with 'Sugarshock' so, yeah, fingers crossed!
missb, Dollhouse might have something, or really absolutely everything, to do with his silence.
Last time he went MIA we ended up with 'Sugarshock'

This time we get a tv show! Keep the fingers crossed though. And toes. I think someone mentioned before that there are special shoes for the toe thing.

If I was going to be a super-villian, my home base would TOTALLY be the set of that show.

Please tell me you would challenge the hero to a dance-off to the death.

it just wouldn't be the same without Morgan Freeman.

Like we would do this without Morgan Freeman. He would play Joss when he posts.

So.....

The bag is catless.

During the strike I started writing a musical intended as a limited internet series, 3 episodes of approximately 10 minutes each. Writing with me was my brother Jed, his fiancee Maurissa, and my other brother Zack. To my shock and surprise, we finished it. To my greater shock and surprise, we managed (with the help of many people I'll be praising at length soon) to drag it into preproduction (yes, just as DOLLHOUSE was given a start date two months away and all my comics were due.) And today, after a grueling week of writing everything ever while trying to be a producer, I got to start shooting. A musical.

This much I will say: It's the story of a low-rent super-villain, the hero who keeps beating him up, and the cute girl from the laundromat he's too shy to talk to. And I'm having the time of my life.

"DOCTOR HORRIBLE'S SING-ALONG BLOG"

Neil Patrick Harris.....as Dr. Horrible
Nathan Fillion..........as Captain Hammer
Felicia Day.............as Penny

And a cast of Dozens!

Coming soon.

-j.
Cool.

Writing with me was my brother Jed, his fiancee Maurissa, and my other brother Zack.

Why I do picture Mr. Whedon as that guy in the Newhart show? "I'm Joss, this is my brother Jed, and this is my other brother Jed... I mean, Zack."
I am SO glad that it wasn't just a joke. Even the title makes it too good not to be done.
*bounces happily in anticipation*

Oops! Sorry, that's a Gonersism. *blushes* I'll start over:

My, I am so looking forward to Mr. Whedon's newest venture. *giggles*
Sounds awesome, J! Can't wait :-)
Sooo cool. I love the name. I love that Felicia's in it. I love that Nathan's in it - and that the rumors on Nathany-bisy-ness were based on summat. I love that it's a family-spawned musical. I love that it's shooting.

I knew Joss was working on something interwebby, 'cause he got all quiet-like even before the strike was over and he could get back to Dollhouse.

Hurrah, Jossir. We is all anticipatory and celebratory.

*bounces with Cabbie.*

(And I will always, always believe bobw1o's skinny - you got info-creds today, my friend, fer sure...)
Yay! Nathan's a captain again. And more Felicia & NPH, but most of all, more Joss! Yay again!
I like it when he's busy.
SCORE!

*Add me to the list of gleeful bouncers/clappers/squee-ers.*

And a big smackeroo to the (yay, finally, again!) overworked Mr W.

When your ship comes in, it sure is in!
Just so freakin' sweet!!! And you cast Felicia!!! I love Felicia!!! NPH too! Nathan is really just OK though.
*lols @ Harm* Yeah, that Fillion guy definitely needs to get his act together. ;-D
This sounds pretty awesome.
Wow! It's real! I can't wait to see it!

Yay!
*bounces with the rest of the Goners... er, Whedonesquers*

Something to tide us over until Dollhouse - with Neil Patrick Harris, and Nathan and Felicia!:D

Xander: "I didn't know what was gonna happen! I just heard, you know, revelries and song and...I wanted to be sure we'd work out. Get a happy ending." (from the original shooting script)

Xander would be so happy. ;-)

gossi, do you have the website up yet?
This started out as such a bad week, but Spike ATF, and now this? I'd say it ended up pretty sweet!
Ok, Yay! And I won't wait for THR or Variety. :)
OMG! OMG! Oh.My.God.
This is so amazing, I am jumping up and down metaphorically because my neighbors would call the police if I made all that noise this late.... But I'm definitely beside myself with excitement!
gossi, do you have the website up yet?

If it helps, the project is listed on Twelve Clipboards. ;)

(And, off-topic but at least it's vampire-related, but now I go off to post pictures from the Twilight film shoot down the street from me.)

bobw1o,

I love very happy surprises! Whoo-hoo!
bobw1o,

So now that Joss has confirmed. Can you admit the place where you work had something to do with it?

Did they need any special cameras.
Oh. My. God.

This has just totally made my weekend.

*falls over from excessive squee-age*
OH.

MY.

GOD.

THISISFUCKINGBRILLIANT.
lol, Felicia as a girl at the laundromat. I hope she brings her Cheetos.
bobw10 ~ what's with the giving of presents to US on your b-day? You sir, are awesome!

WooHoo! More Joss-y goodness!

This is now under the category "Dr. Horrible" which is quite inspired for me seeing as I have only been up for 5 minutes.
I'm so there!
Wow. This is just. Wow.

"Legendary" does not even begin to describe how wow this is.
YAY!!
squeee!
this just made my night/day!
lots of love for jossikins, nathan, Felicia, and NPH!
I'm realy looking forward to seeing this one.

Can I have a link please? .. is it ready yet? Now? How about now? Now is it ready? Is it ready now? How about now? Now? Is It ready yet? ....
*Grins*
This sounds so cool.
I'm so confused.
Now THIS is something I can get excited about! I LOVE musicals!
New category! "Dr. Horrible" Whoo-hoo!

[ edited by Anonymous1 on 2008-03-16 08:35 ]
It sounds like Mystery Men! only with hopefully cooler dialogue, though I have a weird, soft spot in my heart for that movie. Ben Stiller's character's superpower was... to get really ANGRY.

But "Dr. Horrible"! hee! I can't wait.
Joss, you are an utter madman and I love it.
You know every time something like this happens, I think this is when Joss/Nathan/Firefly/Serenity are going to tip.

Gonna happen one day!
The news has been submitted to digg if anyone ha a digg account you might wanna help try and get it on the front page where lots of people will see it

One would tend to think that Digging it as "Neil Patrick Harris in Joss Whedon Musical" might garner more attention, rather than just being "more of the same" to people.
being that the news is on a Nathan Fillion website it seemed kinda relevant - besides, there's absolutely no rhyme or reason to digg, everyone knows that :) a search of digg brings up a whole two popular entries for NPH - so it would seem that people at digg haven't been interested in the past

You could just be helpful and digg it :)

[ edited by Beth'll on 2008-03-16 09:15 ]
I'm doing the Snoopy dance of joy here. Jossy magic and a musical. I never get on the computer this early on a Sunday - a Higher Power clearly inspired me.

This is so cool, 0° Kelvin is hot by comparison.

PLEASE let this be accessible all over the Net, not just the US.
Nathan, Neil and Felicia.. all Joss-ified.. the world just got a little better.
I want a DVD! With lots of extras!
Neil Patrick Harris.....as Dr. Horrible
Nathan Fillion..........as Captain Hammer
Felicia Day.............as Penny

Best, cast, EVER.
Just check pro.imdb.com Neil Patrick Harris doesn't seem to have a dedicated fansite.

B!x, if that ? wasn't still in the top post, I would suggest that you digg this post.
PLEASE let this be accessible all over the Net, not just the US.

and so say we all!
Yep, hear hear purpehazel and Gill - excellent news but if Joss is charging for it i'd love to be able to pay him for the privilege (and it's not often you hear that ;).

Neil Patrick Harris.....as Dr. Horrible
Nathan Fillion..........as Captain Hammer
Felicia Day.............as Penny

Best, cast, EVER.

Don't forget the dozens !

Also, can you guys stop bouncing ? I'm worried you might knock the Earth out of its orbit or something ... then we might have to ask the population of China really nicely if they'll all jump off their chairs simultaneously to knock it back in.

Oh and wooooot !!! BTW, happy Sunday everyone ;).
I wonder if it'll debut up on funnyordie.com.
I told you so. }-)~

Yes, Anony, that's how I know, no they didn't take any special cameras. They're shooting through Thursday, a 5 day shoot. If you figure a normal hour drama is usually 8 days of shooting, you'll get an idea of the length of the thing.

Also, the Director of Photography is Ryan Green, Jack Green's (DP of Serenity) son and camera operator on Serenity.

That's pretty cool, I didn't know about Felicia.

Completely unrelated, I met Ryan's brother, Peter, earlier last week. Among other things he pulled focus on the amazing Steadicam shot at the beginning of the movie! He had mirrors rigged by the grips because he was often forced to be under the steadicam (tight spaces and all) and needed a way to check if the actor's hit their marks. Peter is a very friendly fellow and spoke highly of Joss and working on Serenity. He loved the fan response, including the receiving of cakes and such for the crew.
Eeeeeeeeeee!

This is a good Eeeeeeeeeee! for those keeping track.
Oh wow can't believe its real.
Go Joss.
You keep giving us fans exactly what we want. And we thank you.
Hooray for alternative distribution mechanisms! And for musicals!
Best news since the announcement of "Dollhouse" pre-strike. And major-yay for Nathan Fillion being attached! I can't wait to see it!
This is officially my most anticipated musical web short ever!

Rock on Dr. Awesome! (That would be Joss, not my physician.)
bobw1o works at a laundromat where Joss is shooting a musical? I've been up for more than 20 minutes, but that doesn't mean I understand words.
Felicia?! How wonderful! This was excellent Sunday news to wake up to, for sure. More Jossness is in the works! :-DDD
This is the kind of stuff you want to read when you wake up, grab your laptop from the floor, and say "I wonder what'd going on it the world".

Now the question is, when can we see this brilliance, and how do we get the soundtrack? :-)
Oh, this is wonderful news. Anything that has supervillans and musicals (and Joss Whedon)is a bringer of joys!
So will this lead to a Virtual Broadway, where Joss is the new Rogers and Hammerstein? Actually, I'm surprised the people who make musicals haven't tried this yet. This should be something to see.
Great news. How long after filming will this be on the internet? It sounds like it'll require post-production of several weeks at least.

I can't see how this wouldn't be pretty expensive to make, unless everybody is donating their time, so I'd definitely pay to see it.

Now, if Felicia can just join Dollhouse...

[ edited by shambleau on 2008-03-16 17:59 ]
I think I just had a funny aneurysm.
Oh my. This is so deliciously yay with a little wiggle of glee tossed in.
Joss, you never told us Nathan could sing, too! Let the surprises keep on coming...
Pullleeeeezzzzz tell me it will be viewable by people with Macs. It would break my shrivelles, walnut-sized heart to not be able to enjoy it.

Funny, not long ago I was remembering a clip from a convention or thingy where Joss said "I'm tired of not entertaining you guys."

-- still never got the scoop of where it's from, but

squeeeeee -hee-hee

The bat is cagless, indeed!
Or is that the cag is batless?
Glowing and bouncing. It feels so good to hear of something and not have my first three thoughts be about how it will be screwed up, but about how wonderful it can be.
Here is another thing that can be digged. spelling ?

Fillion, Harris In Whedon's New Musical Miniseries

Mentions both actors and Joss and http://whedonesque.com
Wow. Just...wow. So glad this is real.

And now the fact that Firefly never lasted long enough for a musical episode will be made right by Nathan singing...

Seriously. Wow.
Wait Natan Fillion in a musical...can Nathan Fillion sing cause I seem to recall a certain rendition of the Firefly theme song in the commentary for War Stories that leads me to believe otherwise...
I can't find any video but a TV Guide biography of Nathan says this:

  • Briefly worked as a singing-telegram deliveryman.

Okay, the briefly reference may not be terribly confidence building, but just as Sarah worked hard to do her own singing in OMWF, I have to believe if Nathan sings, he will employ his usual integrity and do everything he can to be believeable ... enjoyable ... and not off key. I have faith in the guy.
  • You have to think that if Joss cast Nathan, he would know if he could sing or not. And that if he couldn't he would have cast someone else. Unless bad singing is a character trait for Captain Hammer.
I think my brain just exploded, in a good way. I am completely over the moon with this news! More Joss musical goodness? Neil Patrick Harris? Nathan Fillion? Felicia Day?

Can we have the movie and Broadway musical versions next? Pretty please?

    I need a Dr. Horrible t-shirt NOW!
Egads, I thought Neil Patrick Harris was kidding! (I guess cos the title is so wonderfully nuts.) Here's the said bit from the interview:

Quint: So, what else do you guys have in the works, besides TREK?

Kal Penn: I’m working on the TV show HOUSE, so hopefully that goes a few more seasons, that would be nice.

John Cho: That’s it for me.

Neil Patrick Harris: I’m doing a web short film that Joss Whedon is directing and wrote called DR. HORRIBLE’S SING-A-LONG BLOG. That’s a musical about super villains and crossing my fingers for the next round of Dancing With The Stars. (long pause) No…

    [Everyone Laughs]

John Cho: Why do I keep falling for this?

    Kal Penn: I was about to… wow…

    I'm so happy!!!
