James Marsters cancels on Fangoria. He will not be attending the convention next month as originally planned.

The good news is, he's got more work. (My first post... I hope I did this right)

You did, Spikesgurl. I am hoping more work in the future will include a return to "Torchwood", too.
Good for James for the new work. Although I'm probably in the minority when I say I hope it's not TW. No offense, but... eh, not my thing. Not even James' amazing acting can get me to watch that show.

I am pretty sad about Fangoria, though. :o( Oh, well.
I hope he's still going to Dragon con, I wouldn't want the east coast JMers to miss out on seeing him. :) I hope that he gets a good experience out of whatever the new project is :)

And I'm sad to hear about the nastiness .... But bring on the James! I miss him. He needs to get a series all his own.
Well, I adored Captain John. It's the best eps of Torchwood we've had. Crud...I guess the last ep of Doctor Who in UK is spoilers cause it hasn't been seen in the US? Cause...... when I saw that, I thought "Spinoff!" and a friend laughingly said, "Yeah, with Captain John :D Yum"
I'm glad I didn't get tickets for this!
Re: the nastiness... I'm glad that this is the first time I've heard about it. It means that the places I frequent don't allow such a thing. Although, I can name one place that I am SURE will have its fill of this - and that is the main reason I left it.

But I'm curious of the UK job! I'm enjoying Torchwood, but I want him to have something better - no offence to TW fans. I still prefer to seeing James there than on Smallville. ;)
The circumspect way they're talking about it makes me wonder if it's actually not 'Torchwood' (I thought it was a fairly open secret that he'd been asked back for series 3). Having said that, there've been rumours that 'Torchwood' is being fairly radically changed for the next series (becoming more family friendly among other things) so it could be JM's peeps just don't want to step on the Beeb's toes prior to some big announcement.

("a fantastic new acting role from a UK company", my emphasis, makes me wonder too since a) "Capt." John isn't a new role - quotes BTW because he never actually was a captain of any kind, he "adopted" the rank to take the piss out of Jack - and b) describing the BBC as a "UK company" is slightly odd wording though probably technically correct and, even if not, understandable from wonna them durn furriners ;)

Shame about the nastiness and i'm happy to assume it's totally unfounded, guy's always seemed the consummate professional in interviews etc. (course, even if it were true, he wouldn't be the first person in the history of the world to take a sickie due to being hung-over or pissed ;).
So it could be Torchwood. Has the ink dried on who the next Doctor will be?
At the moment we don't even know if David Tennant will be stepping down (though the longer he goes without confirming series 6, the more likely it appears).

(and as I imply, fans have reported James as saying he'd been asked back for 'Torchwood' series 3 at conventions, it's not a secret as far as i'm aware - though as said, maybe his people don't see it that way)
Nebula1400, if I have my way then the next Doctor will be Roger Daltrey. The guy is perfect for the part, even without the obvious prior Who connections. ;)

Is it possible that James will go fulltime on Torchwood? Not sure if the final episodes of season 2 have been shown in the US yet so spoiler text on...

Just a warning to anyone, anywhere, who hasn't seen the last episode of season 2. DON'T read what I just spoilered out. It's an episode you need to see with no knowledge of what is to come. You've been warned. ;)
There were reports of him saying at one of the conventions that he was looking at the possibility of 9 months work on something that had come up suddenly. In that I am in no way knowledgeable about Mr. Marsters nor have any inside info, I don't know if this UK project is what he was talking about.

A "UK company" could mean anything since until the deal is done, everybody likes to keep from saying anything that will identify the parties too specifically. JM has always said he was concerned about spending too much time away from his children, so I am wondering if it is a project that will be filmed on the west coast of North America somewhere, but will be a production of a UK entity...perhaps in partnership with a US or Canadian group of some kind? Pure speculation, but entertaining to do. ;-)

course, even if it were true, he wouldn't be the first person in the history of the world to take a sickie due to being hung-over or pissed ;)

On the other hand he has an established history of going on and trying to do a worthwhile performance no matter what condition he is in. He also has a history of owning up to it when he has screwed up. My feeling is, there is no reason to assume a lie unless someone has given you reason to. JM rarely cancels anything at the last minute, and I don't recall him ever bailing for illness. He seems to have been traveling all over the place for work in the last few months ending with a trip across 7 or 8 time zones and a convention. It does not seem unreasonable that the guy got sick.

Yep, which is why "i'm happy to assume it's totally unfounded", as per my post ;-).

ETA: But yeah, "UK company" makes me wonder if it's not actually in the UK - with the number of US remakes of Brit shows this year I wonder if he's got a role on one of those ? Maybe something like 'Eleventh Hour' ?

... if I have my way then the next Doctor will be Roger Daltrey.

Uh huh, well, there're probably less appropriate actors for the role than Daltrey IMO. None really spring to mind but I bet they're out there ;).

And the last episode of series 2 has already been on in the US but i'm sure the cousins will appreciate the non-spoiler effort RockRage ;).

Oops. I didn't mean to make it sound as though I thought you were agreeing with the nay sayers, Saje. I was just trying to reinforce the idea that that particular action does not seem in character for JM from what we have seen of him in the past.

I had been thinking of going to this, since it was almost in my backyard. Problem solved. It would have been nice, but will I trade it for a new acting project? Sure, if he has go anything at all worthwhile to do in the show or film.
An update

"May 2008 - Vacation Break
Even though a full Q&A was promised for May, with James just having finished an incredibly busy and stressful year of steady, and sometimes grueling, work, and with his new project just ahead to prepare for, we have decided to give him a little bit of well-deserved vacation. The Q&A's will resume as soon as James' schedule permits."

Glad he's taking a break, it's been an insanely busy year for him

Two major films, recurring roles in ( counts) three TV shows , a guest spot on a mini series, an album, two tours and some conventions and an audio book.

And the amount of travel this must have involved is mind boggling. He's been filming in Mexico, New York, Vancouver Los Angeles and Cardiff

Nice to see him so much in demand but not at all surprising that jet lag and stomach flu finally caught up with him in London, even then he bounced back to do two great gigs and three very busy days at Collectormania whilst, seemingly, still finding the time to land a new role.

I need a lie down in a darkened room just to think about that schedule :)
Yeah not surprised he's tired and needs a break. On the other hand, he could be digging ditches so i'd bet he counts himself very lucky indeed.

No worries newcj ;).
I am excited about the upcoming project for JM. Whether it is TW (which would be fantastic) or whatever. I would watch this man on a toilet paper commercial, over and over, and I don't care if that makes me obsessive, so be it. I just hope it is a show that appreciates his talents and is willing to share that talent with the audience. I must say that I have been very disappointed in a number of things he has been on lately. I want something with a lot of JM, not just tidbits. TW has been the only thing he has been on that has fit that bill.

As far as the rumors about his cancelling the concert, they aren't even worth talking about.

Hey! No dissing the Daltrey! ;)

Seriously, I actually think he would be fantastic in the role. He's at least as good an actor as certain other previous Doctors were at the time they had the role and he has the perfect personality to pull it off.

I'll be honest and admit the idea started out as a bit of a joke between myself and a few mates, also fans of both Doctor Who and The Who, but the more I thought about it the more I realised he actually could be really good as an incarnation of the Doctor.

That said, Rowan Atkinson did a damn fine job in the Doctor Who spoof he made a few years back... ;)
