Glen Kasper, principal of Storm Studios, said “Joss has always been known to create intriguing, very detailed stories and worlds, so it was a challenging assignment to get all the layers and intricacies of the story into a 3 minute trailer”. STORM was cutting the trailer simultaneously as the pilot was being shot, so FOX could get the sneak of DOLLHOUSE out in time for it’s yearly upfront meeting in New York.

The one thing that really caught my attention was Clayton Rohner - I don't know if it was announced that he was involved and I just missed it, but seeing him brought back lotsa good memories of G vs. E (much as did his guest spot on Angel).

So, most of what I thought about it is wrong and yet most of it seems sort of right too. Woot ! ;).
Am I right in assuming BTW, that those scenes will be almost entirely from the "pilot" or have they started shooting other bits yet ? Cos that's a lot of stuff for the "pilot", I mean in a hit the ground at mach frikkin' one type of way. Did I mention the woot ! ?
I think as an appetite whetter and as a sales tool it's pitched exactly right. Hints, for those with eyes to see, of what's under the hood and yet plenty of exciting, sexy stuff to draw people that maybe don't know Joss but dug 'Alias' or 'True Lies'.
(anyone with RealPlayer, you can download the trailer using the funky "Download this Video" feature and then play it sans stutter)
ETA: And wow, good spot Xander, that is totally a scene from "Who Are You ?" (OK, it could be "This Year's Girl" but i'm thinking "Who Are You ?" is more with the tying in thematically ;).
ETAA: OK, even better spot, it's actually from "Graduation Day Pt 1". Damnit, a clip from "Who Are You ?" would've rocked ;-).

Okay - I didn't quite believe it at first, but I actually do think that is Amber in the bar scene. It's fuzzy, but it really does seem to be her. Does that make sense? Would she film this as a fun little cameo?

A lot of crossover theories will surface. These things are so funny. It reminds me of sth. A friend of mine who's a Lost fan kept saying that Cloverfiled would "offer all the answers to Lost". I laughed at him so hard, it's weird that even the fans believe in these things.

Fox own the rights to Buffy, surely ? Pas de probleme ;).
In fact, thinking about it, the look of the set and the opening helicopter shot of the city is very 'Angel', at least the font is from Serenifly and there's a clip (and Eliza) from Buffy. Is Joss deliberately dropping stuff in there from all his shows maybe ?

Adele is cold and controlled - that's what the posh English accent was invented for (its two main uses being nefarious bosses of illegal organisations and airline pilots ;).
Xander or Warren? Dude is totally Knox.
I dunno, getting a bit of a Holden Webster vibe too. I don't think he's a wrong 'un like Knox or Warren, he's just got his head in the sand (yeah, I totally know the character after about 3 lines and 30 seconds of screen time ;).

I loved it, it's pretty much the way I imagined the show would look like, except I thought Echo would be more of a River-like character, a little crazed and out of it when she wasn't "imprinted".
Liam Mars, I love Veronica Mars too, it's so sad :( I wish Rob would make a movie. I have this theory: if Sex & the City brings lots and lots and lots of lots of money for the studio, a lot of TV shows will have their movie versions. Veronica Mars and The 4400 are the ones that need it the most, their endings left so much unfinished. Plus, they were pretty awsome.
Maybe the Graduation Day scene is to tease us about Sarah guest starring on the show... one can dream, right? :p

Thanks, gossi and friends - now I can get the sickbed sleep I so desperately need. And yeah, Geek who is Lexi, I saw that type, too. I'm not a huge fan of it in this context (or in general) - I think it's little too homespun for this, but it's such a fleeting use, I'm okay with it. And if this ends up being the logo, I'm down with that, too.
And I just love this biological image of - cells replicating? Makes sense. Quite lovely. And (most left of the three) this certainly could be Amber, huh? And I find the Buffy shot a hoot, but doesn't Joss dislike that kindof self-referential or tipped-in reference to other works? Maybe he's okay with it in this quick-and-dirty upfront trailer, though.

Basically, I take it as, "Guys, don't even try. I'll own y'alls asses." Which is pretty obvious, but still.
....on the other hand, I could be very, very wrong, as I am but a gringa

Must admit, when "but can you wipe away a soul ?" came up I thought "Yep" straight away, so that's that one answered (but it's gonna be fun watching Joss try to convince me otherwise ;).
I mean, the comparisons to Warren and potential rape really maybe aren't that far off.
Thing is, they're not being "made" to do anything, they actually do love the person at the time, so it all boils down to whether they're volunteers initially or not. But then that raises the question of how much you can volunteer for, how many consequences does a single choice encompass - if you make a decision now, should you be responsible for everything that happens as a result forever afterwards ?
Which is why it's such a brilliant concept, it covers "souls", free-will, the nature of humanity, the essence of consciousness, identity, mortality - everything basically. It's meaty ;).

This day is awash in Dollhousey luminosity. This isn't helping me sleep, but it is helping me stay awake.
And I have an mp4 of it on my desktop, so I am no longer dependent on the potentially crashfandangoed.
I forgot to mention before that all of the quick-cut abstract or quick tipped-in cuts are lovely and compelling, and I'm sure that I will obsessively examine them. Oh, and also that the wedding-table scene with Stacey Scowley and that other lady, wait-it's-on-the-tip-of-my-tongue... nope, don't remember her name... is quite funny. See, there's room for humor here without betraying Joss' potentially dark vision or his depth.

It should always be spelt "colour" cause thats how us English spell it and it is the English language. ;)
The trailer is poorly made I thought, cheesy music and titles and using clips from Buffy is just silly. Also I'm a little sick of direct overhead shots of cities, it's very cliched now.
However there's some good footage there. It is not quite what I was expecting, I was excepting it to be visually a lot darker. However I enjoyed it more on a second viewing. Forget Dushku, Olivia Williams seems like the one to watch, the line at the end about the situation being unacceptable was brilliantly delivered. Also the actual Dollhouse looks very well designed.
I would however, like to see a more mature trailer.

When I first heard of the show, I for some reason envisioned the Dollhouse looking like the original SD-6 offices of Alias.
The sets they used reminded me a lot of the W&H offices of Angel. Then a quick imdb made me realize that Stuart Blatt, the production designer on Angel, is working on Dollhouse.
BlindHawkeyes | May 16, 03:23 CET
I have to admit; that was the thing that surprised me most about the trailer. It just didn't look the way I was expecting it to at all with respect to the colour palette and general brightness of everything. I'm not saying it's necessarily a bad thing. I was just taken by surprise. I have a feeling the show might do that to me quite a lot.

Maybe later but to be honest, that trailer is gonna sell to the great unwashed IMO and, being at least partly unwashed myself I reckon we need that, big style. Frankly, I feel like we've pretty much done "cancelled before its time", wouldn't mind something in a "breakout hit of the season" or "ratings juggernaut".
Hee, Saje - the guy who wrote it is an Ameddican - though Brit-educated - so I think I gotta go with his likely spelling when I quote.
Well, so long as you're quoting the script that's OK (but i'm sure I heard the 'u' when she was speaking, so if you ever quote Adele directly ... ;).
Saje | May 16, 03:25 CET
It should always be spelt "colour" cause thats how us English spell it and it is the English language. ;)
Didn't we win the IP rights to the English language from you in that big war we had back in the late 1700s? :-)
Sure, British accents are generally charming. But Olivia's voice is more than just that. It's downright mesmerizing. I still maintain that it's the character Adelle's voice that got her where she is. I mean, if she spoke to you like that, wouldn't you suddenly want to disclose all your classified nuclear secrets?
I'm just sayin'.
RayHill | May 16, 03:28 CET
Well, maybe it should've been "Can you wipe away all traces of memory and personality?" but it just doesn't have the same ring.

I don't know... could be, but I don't think so.
kind of off: this scene totally made me think of Dark Angel [on the pilot, if I'm not mistaken - just the walking at the party and all... can't really explain, but just brought this to my mind]

I don't think the music itself is cheesy exactly, but its the way it's used in the trailer that is poorly done.
Also since when is mainstream and quality mutually exclusive? A trailer can be well made and still appeal to a large demographic. It might even hurt the show if the trailer makes it out to be all action, when its actually a slow and existential study on the human condition. That would annoy a lot of people.

I don't think you'd get many people to tune in with that tagline. :)

I don't think the trailer's cheesy - I think it's a damn good job - but it is a hastily-done job made, as has been mentioned, as they got in the various bits and pieces of film, so I think it would be fair to say that this is not the finished trailer that will go out to promote the thing to Joe and Josephine Q. Public.
And I dunno if I think that the aerial shot is so last Tuesday so much as it is a classic - and this one is rather beautiful and creepy. The music seemed fine to me - not a huge draw, personally, but it seemed to work with what was going on and lend it a fittin' vibe.
(I have never learned how to do sick the right way - soup, in bed, sleep, resting... *sigh* I am so gonna get busted later...)
And all the Brits must go to sleep now, too - mustn't they?
Edited because: my eyes burn and I makee the mistakes.

OH MY FRAKKIN' SHEEBA!!!!!!
I thought it was going to be awesome but not this frakin' awesome!!!! Wow! Fab! (insert superlative to suit!) My imagination didn't even think it'll look this cool and awesome and glossy! But then again this is why Joss is Joss and I am, well not. I can't wait!!! Gimme, gimme, gimme more! Dragons are real and can fly and breathe fire and have guilded scales!!!! No wonder fox ordered more eps!!! Thank-you! thank-you! thank-you! Just had a happy!!! Frakkkkk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is the best day ever, I'm officially on summer vacation, gay marriage has been legalized in California, and now the Dollhouse trailer! Yes!
nicetomeatyou | May 16, 04:21 CET
So joking! I LOVED it! The trailer does look hurried, but that won't stop YouTube watchers. I wonder how long it will take to reach 1,000,000 views? If it took only a day, that'd be great.
I love Joss. I love Eliza & the cast. I love Dollhouse.
THIS YEAR IS GOING TO ROCK!

Two minor complaints (because, not everything can be made of awesome all the time - no, really - and because I'm affraid I'll use up the last of those exclamation marks, which I've heard are scarce):
- Not a lot of whedonesque-style dialogue in the trailer. Doesn't "feel" jossian straight away, because of that, but that's probably because of the focuss, which brings us to two:
Agreed, Dave B, misrepresentation cán really hurt something. Take a look at what happened with M. Night Shyamalan's movies (no matter if you like them, or not): a slow burning movie (The Village) and a fairy tale (Lady in the Water) were both presented as scary thrillers in the vein of, say, his previous movie Signs, which I'm certain added to their bombing at the box office ("dude, don't go, it was the lamest horror movie ever. It wasn't even scary, like it was supposed to be.").
If the trailer is all-action (it's very Alias-y, really) and people turn in exited and get a slow-burning show... that might backfire. Whereas if they tune in expecting something a bit slower, those same people might love it.
Of course, the question then becomes: how do you sell a possible 'slow' show to a mainstream audience? And maybe the awnser really is: like this. Despite the above objections. Who knows?
p.s. Caroline, it's really very late here in good old the Netherlands. Guess I'm not the only person not sleeping yet (and I have a graduation presentation tomorrow, 45 minutes of talking about my research project... I really should go to sleep ;-)).

I once made the mistake of not taking much of an interest in a new Joss project. When Firefly first came out I really didn't care enough to give it a chance. I was a Buffy/Angel fan. Didn't need some lame-ass show about cowboys in space. See how wrong I'm capable of being? ;)
Anyway, due to my incredible stupidity of not getting into the amazing Firefly right from the start I swore never to make that same mistake with a Whedon show again so when Joss announced Dollhouse I took notice. The concept sounded interesting. The fact Eliza was involved sounded even better. As news of the cast started coming in I grew extremely excited about the potential of this show and just hoped that I wasn't raising my expectations too high.
This trailer just blew any expectations I had out of the water. Loved it! Bring on the series!

But I must have caught it just in time because now I get this:
"This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by a third party."
Also, is there a download of it somewhere?

And yeah, I'm right there with you, RockRage. I lost interest in Firefly after 'The Train Job' dissapointed me, first time round. Then I gave it a second chance on DVD, much later, became a huge fan, co-ran the Dutch Serenity website, and stalked my friends to give Serenity a chance (only, not scary, like). So you're not the only one trying not to repeat mistakes.
Soooo, that trailer.... kinda neat, huh?
(p.s., AnotherFireflyFan, it's also at this youtube link. But this does beg the question: is linking to this youtube video somehow 'illegal'?)

Linking to it isn't. But posting the video itself (to YouTube or elsewhere) without Fox's permission is. The video is their property.

Now I just to get myself a time machine a travel to january 2009.
Numfar PTB | May 16, 05:26 CET
Because the Zap2It review of the script said it "comes across as darker in tone and slower in pace than anything Whedon has previously attempted".
theonetruebix | May 16, 05:27 CET
We will all have to wait and see unfortunately.

Trek_Girl42, I agree about the font. If I see Papyrus again I'll scream. And those flying-words-I-made-this-with-power-point graphics... I wanted to cry.
I hope this is just a rough draft, and that they hire a real graphic designer for this. I know it seems like it doesn't matter much but it does, it does.
WW, graphic designer in pain.

I too was underwhelmed by the PowerPoint-esque fonts, but I just figured that since this is an early, rough do, all will be well by January. I was more interested in seeing the actors do their things for the first time.
I was surprised by the look of it though; I for some reason envisioned something in much cooler tones, and more shadowy...kind of like how I pictured Shade's Children in my head as I read it.
Hell, I'm all for slightly slower but darker; I'm so looking forward to the infinite shades of grayness that await us! Plus, of course, new hot boys to crush on, and Amy and Eliza being all badass.

Yeah, it's down.
I think this is just b******* ... I mean, come on, we're helping promote the series... it's just a trailer... I don't see why it should be forbidden.
