Dollhouse Trailer. What more do you need to know? Go watch and then come back and discuss! Thanks to gossi for this one.

Glen Kasper, principal of Storm Studios, said “Joss has always been known to create intriguing, very detailed stories and worlds, so it was a challenging assignment to get all the layers and intricacies of the story into a 3 minute trailer”. STORM was cutting the trailer simultaneously as the pilot was being shot, so FOX could get the sneak of DOLLHOUSE out in time for it’s yearly upfront meeting in New York.

I can't possibly describe how excited I am for this show. It just keeps getting better and better. I need to watch again because I swear I saw Amber Benson in the bar scene.
It's a good year, you know?
*squees*

*dies*

*resurrects*

And that was without the video playing properly with the audio. Someone please youtube this. Fast.
Yes, yes, and more yes.
I'm having trouble with the video. Too choppy and keeps stopping halfway through.
Can't speak. Air too heavy. Type only.

It's unhealthy to be that excited about a TV show.
Err, i'm having issues. Are we gulping bandwidth or something (very, very stuttery for me) ?

Yes to the tube of U. Gossi, you've done a sterling job of getting it up but i'm thinking we need some heavy lifting from the big boys.
Wow. That looks amazing. And better than amazing! And then... even more amazing!
:-D
January is so far away. :-(
Everybody's gonna wanna watch this, right? I mean, everybody? Surely this will look as exciting to the rest of viewing public as it does to me? So many Eliza's in one little clip. Fantastic. More! Now! (Lucky me, no clip problems.)
I'm working on it, Saje. The trailer is actually hosted by a professional trailer company who did the trailers for Lost etc etc (really big shows).

But, you know, a lot of people are trying to view this. Funny, that.
Ok, how much of a geek am I that the first thing I noticed was that the font they used was Papyrus, the same font used for Serenity? :)

ETA: TamaraC, I saw her too. It DID look like Amber!

[ edited by lexigeek on 2008-05-15 21:50 ]
What an awesome looking show! Perhaps the master will stop by the blog and weigh-in on this one for us? [Knock, knock....Joss?]
Wow. Just Wow.

The show looks even cooler than the already 'uber-cool' vision I had for it. Amazing.
Yes to the tube of U.

I couldn't see it too, but I got the audio.

I'll try again later, maybe there's sth up with my Quick Time
But, you know, a lot of people are trying to view this. Funny, that.

OK, everyone else stop trying to view this, you lot are just being selfish when clearly you should be thinking of my needs instead. Take, take, take. Sheesh.
Oh.
Wow.

Can this be on the air today please?
lexigeek, you're not alone in that line of thinking..... :)

Though papyrus is being overused for things to the point where it looks kinda cheap. Loved the font of the title though.
Having seen the trailer, my interest is piqued. I now understand the premise clearly and the little clips of Echo in action are beautifully shot and fun-looking. Yay!
It looks even better than I was expecting - and I was expecting it to be pretty damn good.
Everyone start chanting "Fall Release, Fall Release, Fall Release!"
T__T

downloading quicktimeinstaller... and it's gonna take long 20 minutes!!! *I SO hate my internet right now!*
That looks excellent...guess I have another show to add to my must-watch list!
I'm so excited!!!!!!!

That looks great and Eliza looks stunning!
Holy crap. Holy, holy crap. I love what this show seems to be taking on. Oh, the dark and twisted philosophy of it. I love how it looks, too. Is it just me, or did the Topher character seem to be all Xanderish?

How can my 6 year old computer (iMac) play this video no problem? Is it just my lucky day?

Back to it. Wow oh wow.

Honestly, if I didn't know Joss was the creative force behind this, I would be less than enthused based on this trailer. It kinda makes the whole thing look superficial and exploitative (but then I guess they've got to hook viewers somehow). (Then again, keep in mind that when I first heard about Firefly, my initial reaction was, "Didn't Gene Roddenberry and George Lucas already do space westerns?" so what do I know?)

The one thing that really caught my attention was Clayton Rohner - I don't know if it was announced that he was involved and I just missed it, but seeing him brought back lotsa good memories of G vs. E (much as did his guest spot on Angel).
All I can do is this:

*FANGIRL SQUEAL*
Meh, need Quicktime, but not allowed to install random things on work computers. Must wait approx. 20 minutes 'til I get home.

I believe Clayton's involvement was previously mentioned (he's on an imDb listing for the first ep) but skepticism arose because imDb's been wrong before.
God. Just, God. And I can't even get past the first 30 seconds of it. Please, really, a kind soul Youtube it already.
Gadzooks! That looks... delicious!
Cutting edge science in a house full of hot chicks!

That's a pretty good tagline.
Holy crap is exactly what I thought. I'm utterly lacking in words. You know what I really love- that was unexpected, surprising, not at all what I had pictured in my head. Which makes it even better. This looks so frakking awesome! I am giddy with the excitement and I cannot wait. January seems like so far away. :(

Also that cast is just going to kick ass all over the place. I mean really Joss can pick 'em.
DID NO ONE NOTICE THE BUFFY FOOTAGE???!?! Right after she speaks spanish to the guys holding guns at her, there's a quick cut to footage of a Buffy/Faith fight from season 3. It goes fast, but its definitely SMG vs. Eliza!!!

I wish this wasn't just a mid-season replacement.
Oh. My.

So, most of what I thought about it is wrong and yet most of it seems sort of right too. Woot ! ;).

Am I right in assuming BTW, that those scenes will be almost entirely from the "pilot" or have they started shooting other bits yet ? Cos that's a lot of stuff for the "pilot", I mean in a hit the ground at mach frikkin' one type of way. Did I mention the woot ! ?

I think as an appetite whetter and as a sales tool it's pitched exactly right. Hints, for those with eyes to see, of what's under the hood and yet plenty of exciting, sexy stuff to draw people that maybe don't know Joss but dug 'Alias' or 'True Lies'.

(anyone with RealPlayer, you can download the trailer using the funky "Download this Video" feature and then play it sans stutter)

ETA: And wow, good spot Xander, that is totally a scene from "Who Are You ?" (OK, it could be "This Year's Girl" but i'm thinking "Who Are You ?" is more with the tying in thematically ;).

ETAA: OK, even better spot, it's actually from "Graduation Day Pt 1". Damnit, a clip from "Who Are You ?" would've rocked ;-).

Normal language isn't sufficient to express just how psyched I am at this. Really, obscenities help, but they're not enough. This is SO fsking AWESOME.
Well, this computer's audio card isn't working, so I'm going to have to view it on the laptop.

*runs to laptop*
squueeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
*pause*
*deep breath*
squueeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
*repeat sequence until Jan. premiere*
Did anyone notice there is a clip of Eliza as Faith hitting Buffy just before the half way mark....its just after the seciton where she is speaking Spanish.
i checked and the fight is the one in Graduation Day Part 1. Eliza is wearing the white shirt with the black Sacred Heart

http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=5nkvFHmOqtc

26 seconds in, same image!
Is the black really grey, or is my monitor crap?
It's the return of the "Fade to Suede" ;).
Thats the one Xander....I saw it the first time, but had to go back and slow it down when I watched it the 2nd time.
Did we just see the logo? We did, didn't we?

And I freeze-framed it, there's definitely some Buffy footage in there!

ETA: I say "definitely", but their faces are obscured by arm/hand-motion. Certainly looks like it though.

Also, if someone's putting it on YouTube, please deinterlace it first.

ETA2: Xander beat me to it. Wow, this thread is moving fast.

And yeah, the black is definitely too light.

January can't come too soon!
Video loaded perfectly for me. Also...

WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

I think that sums up my feelings. Very cool trailer, although it feels like a network cut, which I assume it is. Something tells me a Joss cut would more emphasise the theme of the show rather than "guns! fights! action! sky diving! whoring!"
GOOD GOD! *faints out of excitement*
Can someone please for the love of Joss help me out? I updated my Quicktime, but all I get is the audio and a green screen. And it stays green during the entire thing. I so need to see this :(
Looks almost criminally good. Is there a higher def version, because I want to see it BIG.
The YouTube version will be linked shortly.
I have to admit I was a bit skeptical about the premise of the show at first (I was also skeptical of Angel and Firefly when I first heard about them), but that trailer was awesome, and now I really can't wait. I really need to have more faith in Joss.

So it looks like Echo was imprinted to be "Faith", a vampire slayer, as one of her jobs. I smell crossover!
This is so not what I expected the show to be like.

And I love it! This trailer has gotten me so excited. Oh January, oh January, come quick my dear January.

And as people above, I saw Amber and I saw Buffy vs. Faith. But I'm thinking the former is just my eyes and blurry focus and not love.
How on earth do they get away with the Buffy footage? Amazing. I didn't notice the Buffster the first viewing. Fantastic.

I hate to complain but as a true fan, I suppose I must. My only gripe? Not crazy about the music choices. But hey, this is only a trailer. And everything else about it - and I mean everything - I love more than I know what to do with.

Okay - I didn't quite believe it at first, but I actually do think that is Amber in the bar scene. It's fuzzy, but it really does seem to be her. Does that make sense? Would she film this as a fun little cameo?

[ edited by phlebotinin on 2008-05-15 22:20 ]
Awesome, awesome, awesome and did I mention awesome? Life is so good!
Vaughn, it was for the upfront presentation, of course it is going to emphasize the guns, fights, action parts.

And the music choices? Perfect! C'mon the Foo Fighters!

[ edited by TamaraC on 2008-05-15 22:20 ]
thump

Sorry I passed out there.

There are no words.

But it is Legend...

Oh, yeah, the moratorium on that phrase.

Okay, then. It reeks of awesome.

ETA: I love the use of the Foo Fighters' "Pretender", it's a wonderful choice, I think it catches the theme wonderfully.

[ edited by crazygolfa on 2008-05-15 22:36 ]
OMG! Add me to the chorus of squeees! This really looks amazing, very sci-fi and very exciting, with just enough politics and mystery. I can see that I'm going to have a new favorite show next year.
eek! So. Wonderful. I watch A LOT of tv and the trailer appeals to not just my love of geeky shows that no one watches but also my love of more mainstream shows that don't get cancelled. This is going to be a long wait.
Vaughn, it was for the upfront presentation, of course it is going to emphasize the guns, fights, action parts.

Oh, I know that, totally. It has to sell the most exciting parts, no doubt about that. Just trying to keep my own excitement in check, knowing that the show isn't going to be 50000mph all the time, and there's more to this than just this.
So it looks like Echo was imprinted to be "Faith", a vampire slayer, as one of her jobs. I smell crossover!

A lot of crossover theories will surface. These things are so funny. It reminds me of sth. A friend of mine who's a Lost fan kept saying that Cloverfiled would "offer all the answers to Lost". I laughed at him so hard, it's weird that even the fans believe in these things.
How on earth do they get away with the Buffy footage?

Fox own the rights to Buffy, surely ? Pas de probleme ;).

In fact, thinking about it, the look of the set and the opening helicopter shot of the city is very 'Angel', at least the font is from Serenifly and there's a clip (and Eliza) from Buffy. Is Joss deliberately dropping stuff in there from all his shows maybe ?
WOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!! I cannot remember the last time I was this excited. I've spent the last 10 minutes racing up and down the stairs, showing it to every member of my family. I cannot wait... :)
Yes. Absolutely yes. Joss fan aside, this show just looks amazing. The concept sounds hokey to outsiders, I bet, but the execution as shown in that trailer washes any of that aside.
This just made my finals-filled day so much better. ::goes off to watch it again::
Okay, now I'm actually going to be able to get some sleep tonight, I have three things rattling in my mind I need to get out:

a) Show concept, kinda squicks me out. I'm not worried, it's just hovering near a nerve. Which I think is the point.

b) Eliza = love. And she can act love, too. Wicked cool.

c) "I'm not nobody".
I just got a coworker that hates scifi or anything that isn't "real" to watch it. His response: "Not bad. I think it will be a good show. People will watch and that girl is super hot."

He is solidly in Fox's target demo so this makes me all kinds of happy.
What's this "Dollhouse" thing?
oh my Joss! I'm just dying here... I still can't watch it.
Got the Quick Time, but is taking ages to load... and what's already loaded is just really slow...

but for the little I've seen, it looks awesome!

And yeah, definatly got a Angel-vibe from the city shots...
Well, we just found something that's even cooler than Iron Man!!
Also, no matter what it takes, someone bribe/pay the Foo Fighters to use "The Pretender" as the theme song.
Oh, and Amy Acker will be on the show, right? We didn't see her in the trailer.
Or: "Eternal Sunshine of the Programmable Date"
Never mind Eliza Dushku; I am slain by Olivia Williams's British accent! I hope she talks a lot. And is evil.

The trailer looks pretty cool, and it fleshes out the premise in ways I wasn't expecting. I didn't realize that people actually took the Dolls Actives out of the Dollhouse. And I really like the ominousness of "They're grouping."

I love the use of the Foo Fighter's "Pretender", it's a wonderful choice, I think it catches the theme wonderfully.

Me too. And at the beginning, they use Massive Attack's "Dissolved Girl"! With a shot of Eliza underwater. Hee.
After rewatching it, I already can tell I'm going to love Body and Topher as characters, and that Olivia Williams is gorgeous. Joss may have out done himself this time.
I don't think Amy is in the first episode.

More Foo Fighters is always a good thing. You can't really have enough Foo Fighters. Ever.
oohhh my god oh my god oh my god oh my god. I'm so excited after seeing that trailer that I just might explode!
Random thoughts:
1. I really love how child-like Eliza looked underwater.
2. Rather than a Xander vibe from Topher, I get a major Warren one. He's like a blond Warren; even the voice is similar.
3. I'm glad they didn't try to make Olivia Williams play with an American accent.
What's this "Dollhouse" thing?

It's a hip-hop reinterpretation of a classic Ibsen play.
I concur(sp?) with gossi that "I'm not nobody" has me damn hooked.

I've rewatched that line... a few... times.
Xander or Warren? Dude is totally Knox.
oohhh my god oh my god oh my god oh my god. I'm so excited after seeing that trailer that I just might explode!

Eliza speaking Spanish = hotness!
Can anyone translate the spanish dialogue?
Holy crap! This is gonna rock!

The sets are amazing!! Not what I had pictured in my mind. (More spacious. I was thinking along the lines of a typical house for some reason!)

Can I buy the DVD's yet? When do those come out?
September '09 ;)
I concur(sp?) with gossi that "I'm not nobody" has me damn hooked.

I really like the line on principle, but the moment doesn't seem nearly as powerful as Buffy's "Me," which is one of my favorite assertions of identity ever.
3. I'm glad they didn't try to make Olivia Williams play with an American accent.

Adele is cold and controlled - that's what the posh English accent was invented for (its two main uses being nefarious bosses of illegal organisations and airline pilots ;).

Xander or Warren? Dude is totally Knox.

I dunno, getting a bit of a Holden Webster vibe too. I don't think he's a wrong 'un like Knox or Warren, he's just got his head in the sand (yeah, I totally know the character after about 3 lines and 30 seconds of screen time ;).

c) "I'm not nobody".

gossi | May 15, 22:32 CET

I thought you were "nobodier than nobody" ? I dunno, one piece of amazingly kinetic existential inspiration and you go and get all existentially inspired. So fickle.

;-)
Polter-Cow, I don't think we know the full context of the moment.

Also, it's up on Youtube here.
Xander or Warren? Dude is totally Knox.
Heh. I did think Jonathan Woodward when I first heard about the part, I admit. But I think there's a dash of woman-objectifying in there that makes me think Warren first.
I can't get this to work, on any of my computers.
Damn, I can't watch it either and I have quicktime!? Haven't felt this sense of panic/frustration/need-to-seeeee! in a long time :)
gossi, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for the youtube link!!!!

I was dying here!!
Insanity is about to ensue after this footage. We have to wait for like over 8 months???!!! Before the 1st episode is aired? How fair is that??

*screams*
Polter-Cow, I don't think we know the full context of the moment.

Oh, I know. I hope it resonates more in context. The line delivery didn't do as much for me, is what I'm saying. This is a show about defining (and redefining) our identities, which is a favorite theme of mine, so I want it all to be awesome!
Call me shallow, but doesn't the set look utterly fantastic too?
Thanks so much for the Youtube link!
The set looks amazing if you ask me. YMMV and all that.
I think it's time another polaroid is added to the Whedonesque banner, no?
Thank you for the YouTube link, gossi!
Mmmmmmm.... Pretty pictures.... *floats around in a state of joyous delirium*
Woo Hoo!! How about those little in the floor "coffin" sleep pod-thingies. Creepy.
I'm gobsmacked! I wasn't expecting a trailer just yet. Eliza's range is just amazing! I think this will fill the whole in my heart left by Veronica Mars. The hole had previously been Buffy's.
*still shivering*

It looks absolutely fantastic! I’m totally speechless!

Olivia Williams completely OWNS the role of Adelle! And Eliza speaking Spanish? *faint*

This show is going to kick some serious ass!

But the waiting till January will kill me... :-(
Trailer good. Girls pretty. Eliza reaaally pretty. Guys funny. Action cool. Half year wait very, very bad.

Grammar damaged by too much awesome.
ok, almost everything I could say about it has been said... so I'll just join on the 'OMFG looks awesome' !!!

About the Xander/Warren/Knox thing... I'm with swanjun, I get more a Warren vibe.

That's it. My brain is way too amused to be able to analyse it in a deeper level... maybe tomorrow.
Yay youtube link- and wow! Want. Now. And the coffin pod things are very weird.
gossi, thank you for the youtube link

I loved it, it's pretty much the way I imagined the show would look like, except I thought Echo would be more of a River-like character, a little crazed and out of it when she wasn't "imprinted".

Liam Mars, I love Veronica Mars too, it's so sad :( I wish Rob would make a movie. I have this theory: if Sex & the City brings lots and lots and lots of lots of money for the studio, a lot of TV shows will have their movie versions. Veronica Mars and The 4400 are the ones that need it the most, their endings left so much unfinished. Plus, they were pretty awsome.

Maybe the Graduation Day scene is to tease us about Sarah guest starring on the show... one can dream, right? :p
It's the happiest day of my life! :`(

*snickers* So true for us and yet so not for her.
*squeeing has reached beyond the limits of human hearing*

january is too far away!!!
About the Xander/Warren/Knox thing... I'm with swanjun, I get more a Warren vibe.

Really ? We're getting an objectifies women/Warren Mears vibe because he uses the phrase "hot chicks" ? So that's the same as attempted rape and murder now ? Each to their own I suppose, to me he just seems like a young guy that's "conveniently blind" to the implications of what he's doing.

Guess we'll find out in only, ooh, 8 months give or take. *whimpers*.
Thanks for the YouTube linkage, gossi!

I'm very very happy right now!
Well, I think this a good time for a first post. This looks very, very awesome. It'll be a long wait until January indeed! And thanks for the youtube link.
I think he's supposed to be basically a good guy in a grey situation and we'll see how that affects him. When I said Knox I meant purely that he sounded like Jonathan M. Woodward delivering Knox lines. And, yes, before you ask that does sound a tiny bit different than other JMW characters ;)
Okay, the website for the company hosting it (Storm) just crashed so the stream is broken. I'm trying to get it fixed.

Considering they've successfully hosted the launch campaigns for Lost season 3 and 4, Grey’s Anatomy, Golden Compass, 24 and American Idol that's pretty impressive.
We break t'interwebs the best ! Yay us !
It's awesome. It's awesome times awesome. It's awesome squared.

January looks very far away right now, though.
Really ? We're getting an objectifies women/Warren Mears vibe because he uses the phrase "hot chicks" ? So that's the same as attempted rape and murder now ? Each to their own I suppose, to me he just seems like a young guy that's "conveniently blind" to the implications of what he's doing.

Saje, I'm with you.
Adds to the squeel-fest!
Thanks for all the linkage good people.

On a side note, my local NYC Fox news station did a report from their upfront. The only Dollhouse they showed was a 5 second clip that don't believe was in the trailer. Couple caps here and here
For those thinking they're not getting the trailer to play on the Storm site, it takes a loooong time to load on slower connections, but if you wait until it's done instead of clicking play immediately, it will play smoothly. I think it took almost 5 minutes to load on my home computer but it was worth it. :)
crazy double post *glares at thread that spazzed on her*

*whine* Teasers... such teasers. I want this now! I didn't think I'd get this much excited about something again until I saw this and was reminded again how much Joss blows my mind.

I watched the trailer for the fourth (maybe fifth) time. And I still want to watch it one more time. It's happening all over again! :D Now I have to immerse myself in my work so much that the passage of time quickens until its January. Darn.
Not always the case cabri- I paused it and it loaded in less than a minute but still played all stuttery- to the point where I only saw four or five images out of the nearly three minutes.
I haven't been able to view it without the stutter so I completely missed the Buffy moment- how odd. I also love the opening shot of Echo - all womblike, innocent and peaceful. Just awesome.

I just counted up the days until the second Monday in January - 248. Which is just far too long. So there's the bitter with the sweet that today has given us. :)
I've just changed the trailer website. It's using Youtube now, as we completely crashed Storm Studios' website.
We break t'interwebs the best ! Yay us !

Back during the advance Serenity screenings, some of us dubbed this "crashing fandango". As in, "We crash fandango'd Storm Studios? Awesome."

I'm very glad that it's a January release... it's clear that FOX has a strategy that highly values this show, and doesn't undervalue it. Calling it a tentpole, pairing it with "24" (theoretically a good thing, right?), this "remote-free TV" thing... sounds like a strong investment. And if getting that investment to pay off means the show starts in January... to quote Bill Parcells, that's a good thing, not a bad thing.

[ edited by KingofCretins on 2008-05-15 23:33 ]
Right, this is my first post, so I want to make sure I get this right...

SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!

How was that? Intonation ok? I was going for more of a masculine bellow effect than the standard high-pitched number...

Seriously, though, so excited. Have been since I first heard the concept, and it just keeps mounting. And Olivia Williams is just awesome. I should know that by now, but she was even awesomer than I'd expected.

Thank you, gossi, so much for this, you are a legend. Oh, yeah, and that joss guy, and whoever else was involved...
If this is any sign of traffic issue's, I'm wondering how Dr. Horrible will hold up :X
Part of me wants to fast-forward through the rest of this year, but other parts of me don't want to miss a bunch of issues of Buffy and Angel comics, the TPB of Unstoppable, and Dr. Horrible. I suppose those parts'll have to win, as I don't have temporal powers.

This was sculpted almost entirely out of 100% uncut awesome. Very lovely and lush and yet off and a little disturbing. Intriguing.

And just F y'all's I, it worked best for me in Firefox.

Thanks, gossi and friends - now I can get the sickbed sleep I so desperately need. And yeah, Geek who is Lexi, I saw that type, too. I'm not a huge fan of it in this context (or in general) - I think it's little too homespun for this, but it's such a fleeting use, I'm okay with it. And if this ends up being the logo, I'm down with that, too.

And I just love this biological image of - cells replicating? Makes sense. Quite lovely. And (most left of the three) this certainly could be Amber, huh? And I find the Buffy shot a hoot, but doesn't Joss dislike that kindof self-referential or tipped-in reference to other works? Maybe he's okay with it in this quick-and-dirty upfront trailer, though.

Alrighty, I'm spent.

"The world is a very simple place, at first. Then as we grow up, it grows around us - a dense thicket of complication and disappointment. I know you've heard colorful rumors about what an Active is - robot, zombie slaves... They are, of course, quite the opposite - an Active is the truest soul among us."

"In a city of millions, many souls get lost. But there is a place that wipes away the regret, the pain, the memories. But everything has a price..."
How should you spell "colour" when you're quoting an English actress ? It's a conundrum ;).

As in, "We crash fandango'd Storm Studios? Awesome."

Heh. Surprised I must admit, didn't realise we had the muscle. Slashdot next I reckon, positive mental attitude people, c'mon we can do it !

The only Dollhouse they showed was a 5 second clip that don't believe was in the trailer. Couple caps here and here

Interesting. Echo meeting the fed and, watching it again, the photo he has is of her. Maybe Echo was his girlfriend/wife, hence the obsessive crusade ?

Wow, if all this really is from the "pilot", that's one jampacked episode of TV. Do we know if it's extended length like 'Serenity Pts 1 and 2' ?
If this is any sign of traffic issue's, I'm wondering how Dr. Horrible will hold up :X

It was linked off of the trailer company's personal server not off a load-balanced distribution network. You'll notice the YouTube link has no issues as it was made to get bombarded. I didn't see anyone that made me think of Amber.
WOW WOW WOW!!! Okay maybe I need a few more WOWs.....
Beginning of the trailer gives a Ghost in the Shell vibe. WOW!!!

And how amazing is Olivia Williams in the trailer!!! Great call Joss!!!

WOW WOW WOW WOW wow wow wow w.....
It made the baby in my belly kick....a lot. That can only be a good sign. I'm just too excited for words. So wonderful to see our man's work again. So happy!
Really ? We're getting an objectifies women/Warren Mears vibe because he uses the phrase "hot chicks" ? So that's the same as attempted rape and murder now ?

Well, at least for me, that's not what gave me the 'Warren Vibe'. For me was just they way of talking and the gestures... nothing like a 'murderer vibe'.
Couldn't be more excited. I just hope I won't become too unbearable while waiting for January... Gotta watch that trailer again!
I guess some Dutch geeks helped a bit to slay Storm Studio's :X Tweakers.net has a forum with a TV and Movie room, and I happened to mention the Trailer.. :D Oh and FYI that community is the largest Dutch IT related community in the world, and geeks love Joss.. so go figure.. Slashdotted or SlashGotted (gathering.tweakers.net)

Edit: Just killed it *laughs*

Thanks for the quoting, QuoterGal. I have to say, I was really surprised, in a good way, that "soul" came up so much. It makes sense given the "what makes us human" premise. I really wonder where the idea will end up going in a non-supernatural (as far as I know) context. But then again, that's probably a big point of the show. Looking forward to a whole new world of "soul" debates. January... so far away.
So firstly there was the "Who Are You" intro at the start which had me thinking "ooh... Eliza in BtVS" and then there was the BtVS snippet in the middle. I honestly thought I was imagining that one for a minute. Heh...

As for the premise... I'm actually quite uncomfortable (which I'm not saying is bad) with a situation where these guys can be made to feel "in love" with someone. I mean, the comparisons to Warren and potential rape really maybe aren't that far off. I'm wondering how far down that road the show will go.

Too much... Don't know where to start... Where is Joss for his insight?

Foo!
Not quite Primetime ready in terms of a commercial but the show looks fracking awesome...can't wait...

Needs moar polishing though on the cheesey PowerPoint text
I didn't see anyone that made me think of Amber.

Yeah, me neither... [but I'm kind of blind right now... my sight is fucked up]
Anyway, would be sweet if she made an appearance.

ps: sorry for the double post... but I still haven't learn how to edit my posts...
I'm in. Not that I wasn't in. But now I'm IN.
Oh, I can't wait for this. I've been a little hesitant about the concept from the descriptions, but now I'm sold. This is going to be a long wait.
Joining everyone (and coming out of lurker mode) to say that this is one show I'm very excited about seeing - and the trailer just ratcheted up the excitement level. The whole cast looks great.
Trying to catch the Spanish to translate it for everyone (although it's been too long for me to be trying this in earnest).

I think I've got it as, "muchachos, si arman bronca, promera mucha matre" which is literally, "guys, if you arm yourselves with anger, I promise much death"

Basically, I take it as, "Guys, don't even try. I'll own y'alls asses." Which is pretty obvious, but still.

....on the other hand, I could be very, very wrong, as I am but a gringa
'Twas quite satisfying, really, as I got to see Faith punch Buffy a dozen or so times! I think that was AB, shaggy bangs and all ("she" was in the booth at the bar, yes? Or doth mine eyes play tricks?) It needs to be January. Now.
If anyone wants to snag the original .mp4 file, I have it up on a domain that could take a little bit of beating (please don't take that as a challenge ;) use this for d/l rather than a watch/pass around).
Woo-hoo! Thanks for the YouTube link. This is so cool. I can't wait! (Though as I'm in the UK, I'll probably have to. *sigh*)
I have to say, I was really surprised, in a good way, that "soul" came up so much.

Must admit, when "but can you wipe away a soul ?" came up I thought "Yep" straight away, so that's that one answered (but it's gonna be fun watching Joss try to convince me otherwise ;).

I mean, the comparisons to Warren and potential rape really maybe aren't that far off.

Thing is, they're not being "made" to do anything, they actually do love the person at the time, so it all boils down to whether they're volunteers initially or not. But then that raises the question of how much you can volunteer for, how many consequences does a single choice encompass - if you make a decision now, should you be responsible for everything that happens as a result forever afterwards ?

Which is why it's such a brilliant concept, it covers "souls", free-will, the nature of humanity, the essence of consciousness, identity, mortality - everything basically. It's meaty ;).
Hee, Saje - the guy who wrote it is an Ameddican - though Brit-educated - so I think I gotta go with his likely spelling when I quote.

This day is awash in Dollhousey luminosity. This isn't helping me sleep, but it is helping me stay awake.

And I have an mp4 of it on my desktop, so I am no longer dependent on the potentially crashfandangoed.

I forgot to mention before that all of the quick-cut abstract or quick tipped-in cuts are lovely and compelling, and I'm sure that I will obsessively examine them. Oh, and also that the wedding-table scene with Stacey Scowley and that other lady, wait-it's-on-the-tip-of-my-tongue... nope, don't remember her name... is quite funny. See, there's room for humor here without betraying Joss' potentially dark vision or his depth.

zeitgeist, did you click on my link? - I know it's fuzzy, but there is a distinct Amberosity...
This is going to be pure awesome.
Good crikey.

January seems a very long way off.
How should you spell "colour" when you're quoting an English actress ? It's a conundrum ;).

It should always be spelt "colour" cause thats how us English spell it and it is the English language. ;)

The trailer is poorly made I thought, cheesy music and titles and using clips from Buffy is just silly. Also I'm a little sick of direct overhead shots of cities, it's very cliched now.

However there's some good footage there. It is not quite what I was expecting, I was excepting it to be visually a lot darker. However I enjoyed it more on a second viewing. Forget Dushku, Olivia Williams seems like the one to watch, the line at the end about the situation being unacceptable was brilliantly delivered. Also the actual Dollhouse looks very well designed.

I would however, like to see a more mature trailer.
QG, you're not crazy on this one. I had the same "weird that looks like Amber" thing when that shot came up. (By "not crazy" I mean it looks like her, not it necessarily is her.)
I think it's Muchachos, si arman bronca, te prometo mucha madre.

It means, "Guys if you give me a hard time, I promise to give you hell. (more or less)
It was amazing, of course, and I'm now planning to speak nothing but quotes from that trailer for several days. Great dialogue, looks extremely stylish and a perfect cast to boot. Now we play the waiting game, chaps. But I'm now completely sure it'll be worth it and much more.
It looks a bit like her but I'm not entirely sure.
Really excited for this.

When I first heard of the show, I for some reason envisioned the Dollhouse looking like the original SD-6 offices of Alias.

The sets they used reminded me a lot of the W&H offices of Angel. Then a quick imdb made me realize that Stuart Blatt, the production designer on Angel, is working on Dollhouse.
I was excepting it to be visually a lot darker

I have to admit; that was the thing that surprised me most about the trailer. It just didn't look the way I was expecting it to at all with respect to the colour palette and general brightness of everything. I'm not saying it's necessarily a bad thing. I was just taken by surprise. I have a feeling the show might do that to me quite a lot.
Could be her, that woman has the same shape of face as Amber.

I would however, like to see a more mature trailer.

Maybe later but to be honest, that trailer is gonna sell to the great unwashed IMO and, being at least partly unwashed myself I reckon we need that, big style. Frankly, I feel like we've pretty much done "cancelled before its time", wouldn't mind something in a "breakout hit of the season" or "ratings juggernaut".

Hee, Saje - the guy who wrote it is an Ameddican - though Brit-educated - so I think I gotta go with his likely spelling when I quote.

Well, so long as you're quoting the script that's OK (but i'm sure I heard the 'u' when she was speaking, so if you ever quote Adele directly ... ;).
Dave B wrote:

Didn't we win the IP rights to the English language from you in that big war we had back in the late 1700s? :-)

Sure, British accents are generally charming. But Olivia's voice is more than just that. It's downright mesmerizing. I still maintain that it's the character Adelle's voice that got her where she is. I mean, if she spoke to you like that, wouldn't you suddenly want to disclose all your classified nuclear secrets?

I'm just sayin'.
Must admit, when "but can you wipe away a soul ?" came up I thought "Yep" straight away

Well, maybe it should've been "Can you wipe away all traces of memory and personality?" but it just doesn't have the same ring.
Exactly, Saje! It is about time that the word "cult" and Whedon be separated. I'm tired of being in a cult and am looking forward to being mainstream. If so called "cheesy" music by a couple bands I absolutely love isn't "mature" enough then that is fine by me.
ok, now I saw her...
I don't know... could be, but I don't think so.

kind of off: this scene totally made me think of Dark Angel [on the pilot, if I'm not mistaken - just the walking at the party and all... can't really explain, but just brought this to my mind]
This makes January 2009 a lot more painful wait.
If so called "cheesy" music by a couple bands I absolutely love isn't "mature" enough then that is fine by me.

I don't think the music itself is cheesy exactly, but its the way it's used in the trailer that is poorly done.

Also since when is mainstream and quality mutually exclusive? A trailer can be well made and still appeal to a large demographic. It might even hurt the show if the trailer makes it out to be all action, when its actually a slow and existential study on the human condition. That would annoy a lot of people.
So when do they release a .zip file of audio, video, graphical, and photographic assets for fans to use to create their own trailers? ;)
Well, I did say that I'd believe it when I saw it. I just saw it and well...there ya go.
a slow and existential study on the human condition

I don't think you'd get many people to tune in with that tagline. :)
The "doll house" looks a lot like the season 5 Wolfram & Hart offices, which is nice, because I loved that set.
There are few things in this world that can urge me, with my 36kps internet connection, to attempt to watch a YouTube video, and Dollhouse is one of them. It took about forty five minutes to load it all up, but it was worth the wait. Loved the intro (very Angel-y to me), the music, the cast looks great on screen. Olivia Williams seems to be a superb actress. I can already tell I'm going to like Topher. Now, to jump onto the 'it's gonna be awesome' bandwagon, let me just say... it's gonna be awesome. I'm psychic, so I know these things.
There's no real reason that it should be Amber, really - it's just that when TamaraC first mentioned it upthread, I could see what she meant.

I don't think the trailer's cheesy - I think it's a damn good job - but it is a hastily-done job made, as has been mentioned, as they got in the various bits and pieces of film, so I think it would be fair to say that this is not the finished trailer that will go out to promote the thing to Joe and Josephine Q. Public.

And I dunno if I think that the aerial shot is so last Tuesday so much as it is a classic - and this one is rather beautiful and creepy. The music seemed fine to me - not a huge draw, personally, but it seemed to work with what was going on and lend it a fittin' vibe.

(I have never learned how to do sick the right way - soup, in bed, sleep, resting... *sigh* I am so gonna get busted later...)

And all the Brits must go to sleep now, too - mustn't they?

Edited because: my eyes burn and I makee the mistakes.

OMFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OH MY FRAKKIN' SHEEBA!!!!!!

I thought it was going to be awesome but not this frakin' awesome!!!! Wow! Fab! (insert superlative to suit!) My imagination didn't even think it'll look this cool and awesome and glossy! But then again this is why Joss is Joss and I am, well not. I can't wait!!! Gimme, gimme, gimme more! Dragons are real and can fly and breathe fire and have guilded scales!!!! No wonder fox ordered more eps!!! Thank-you! thank-you! thank-you! Just had a happy!!! Frakkkkk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Careful, we'll run out of our daily allotment of exclamation marks.
Aaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! Oh my god! Holy crap! This looks excellent! Eliza looks excellent! I got goosebumps when it said Joss' name, I can't believe this is happening!
This is the best day ever, I'm officially on summer vacation, gay marriage has been legalized in California, and now the Dollhouse trailer! Yes!
I guess I'll give it a shot.

So joking! I LOVED it! The trailer does look hurried, but that won't stop YouTube watchers. I wonder how long it will take to reach 1,000,000 views? If it took only a day, that'd be great.

I love Joss. I love Eliza & the cast. I love Dollhouse.

THIS YEAR IS GOING TO ROCK!

Yep. That was great. I'm totally with the people who were surprised at the way things looked (although, the new scene linked on the front page does have the darkish post-BSG-Joss feel I was expecting).

Two minor complaints (because, not everything can be made of awesome all the time - no, really - and because I'm affraid I'll use up the last of those exclamation marks, which I've heard are scarce):

- Not a lot of whedonesque-style dialogue in the trailer. Doesn't "feel" jossian straight away, because of that, but that's probably because of the focuss, which brings us to two:

It might even hurt the show if the trailer makes it out to be all action, when its actually a slow and existential study on the human condition. That would annoy a lot of people.

Agreed, Dave B, misrepresentation cán really hurt something. Take a look at what happened with M. Night Shyamalan's movies (no matter if you like them, or not): a slow burning movie (The Village) and a fairy tale (Lady in the Water) were both presented as scary thrillers in the vein of, say, his previous movie Signs, which I'm certain added to their bombing at the box office ("dude, don't go, it was the lamest horror movie ever. It wasn't even scary, like it was supposed to be.").

If the trailer is all-action (it's very Alias-y, really) and people turn in exited and get a slow-burning show... that might backfire. Whereas if they tune in expecting something a bit slower, those same people might love it.

Of course, the question then becomes: how do you sell a possible 'slow' show to a mainstream audience? And maybe the awnser really is: like this. Despite the above objections. Who knows?

p.s. Caroline, it's really very late here in good old the Netherlands. Guess I'm not the only person not sleeping yet (and I have a graduation presentation tomorrow, 45 minutes of talking about my research project... I really should go to sleep ;-)).
I literally can't wait until this show comes out. The trailer does a fantastic job of conveying some of the shows major themes. Action, Romance, Philosophical questions on the nature of the self and everyone's really, really, hot. It's Joss Whedon alright.
Am travelling tomorrow, can't sleep as usual. Good luck with your presentation.
Why do people think the show is going to be slow? That maybe sounds like the wrong word. None of Joss' shows have been slow.
I think I just died and went to heaven! So much Jossy godness in one day - trailer, cast photos and exclusive clip. WOOHOO!
Well, that was... neat!

I once made the mistake of not taking much of an interest in a new Joss project. When Firefly first came out I really didn't care enough to give it a chance. I was a Buffy/Angel fan. Didn't need some lame-ass show about cowboys in space. See how wrong I'm capable of being? ;)

Anyway, due to my incredible stupidity of not getting into the amazing Firefly right from the start I swore never to make that same mistake with a Whedon show again so when Joss announced Dollhouse I took notice. The concept sounded interesting. The fact Eliza was involved sounded even better. As news of the cast started coming in I grew extremely excited about the potential of this show and just hoped that I wasn't raising my expectations too high.

This trailer just blew any expectations I had out of the water. Loved it! Bring on the series!
Ok... parts of this look really good. However, I imagined it as a bit more high tech looking... glass walls, blues, greens.. chrome, and it's all wood and homey looking. The titles are also kind of cheap looking. And they used one clip twice for seemingly no reason. However, I do like the music, and the acting looks great even just from the trailer. I like the added element of why these people would undergo this procedure. I really want to see the show to judge fully.
Ok, that was amazing...

But I must have caught it just in time because now I get this:

"This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by a third party."

Also, is there a download of it somewhere?
Unless, the clip they used twice is a actually two different scene, to bookend the episode.
yeah... I thought of that after I posted....
Good luck, with the travelling and not sleeping and thanks, Caroline!

And yeah, I'm right there with you, RockRage. I lost interest in Firefly after 'The Train Job' dissapointed me, first time round. Then I gave it a second chance on DVD, much later, became a huge fan, co-ran the Dutch Serenity website, and stalked my friends to give Serenity a chance (only, not scary, like). So you're not the only one trying not to repeat mistakes.

Soooo, that trailer.... kinda neat, huh?

(p.s., AnotherFireflyFan, it's also at this youtube link. But this does beg the question: is linking to this youtube video somehow 'illegal'?)
Woops. Did someone forget to get Fox's permission before posting this to YouTube? The video has been taken down.
GVH wrote:

Linking to it isn't. But posting the video itself (to YouTube or elsewhere) without Fox's permission is. The video is their property.
OMG!!!!! That was so fraking awesome.
Now I just to get myself a time machine a travel to january 2009.
Why do people think the show is going to be slow?

Because the Zap2It review of the script said it "comes across as darker in tone and slower in pace than anything Whedon has previously attempted".
But doesn't darker make up for slower? In my twisted brain it does.

We will all have to wait and see unfortunately.
Unbearably awesome that was.

Trek_Girl42, I agree about the font. If I see Papyrus again I'll scream. And those flying-words-I-made-this-with-power-point graphics... I wanted to cry.

I hope this is just a rough draft, and that they hire a real graphic designer for this. I know it seems like it doesn't matter much but it does, it does.

WW, graphic designer in pain.
Just watched again, somewhat I'm getting a sort of heavy "Objects in Space" vibe from it, can't explain exactly why.
And in a touch of stupidity, it would appear that people are complaining that we're spreading around their advertising. Meanwhile, the official source is still down from bandwidth overuse.
Even the mp4 I downloaded from zeitgeist is stuttery. *cries*
I'm thanking the Great Muppety Odin that zeitgeist gave us all the downloadable link, especially as I need to convert the rest of the people in my life. Luck to you, SNT!

I too was underwhelmed by the PowerPoint-esque fonts, but I just figured that since this is an early, rough do, all will be well by January. I was more interested in seeing the actors do their things for the first time.

I was surprised by the look of it though; I for some reason envisioned something in much cooler tones, and more shadowy...kind of like how I pictured Shade's Children in my head as I read it.

Hell, I'm all for slightly slower but darker; I'm so looking forward to the infinite shades of grayness that await us! Plus, of course, new hot boys to crush on, and Amy and Eliza being all badass.
Thanks, BoB - actually, I deleted the comment I'd just posted after finding zg's link. Looked really good, although I think the music (and typical trailer jump cutting) was perhaps misleading as to the tone; the former wasn't my cup of tea, really.

Yeah, it's down.

I think this is just b******* ... I mean, come on, we're helping promote the series... it's just a trailer... I don't see why it should be forbidden.
