And in this corner...Faith LeHaine!
An American professional wrestler, relocated to the UK, has a familar moniker...and it's no coincidence.
She also has a MySpace page.

The top quote on her myspace page is from "Vera" in Dolores Claiborne.
You're welcome.
Other than that I not only got nothing, I can't hardly speak none.

Speaking of Faith, out of curiousity, I was wondering....how many of you consider "Lehane" to be her actual surname, since it was never mentioned on-screen?
menomegirl | May 23, 02:22 CET
ETA - I guess what I really mean is, whether I consider it to be her actual name or not, it is. As a followup I am going to try doubting gravity's existence after dinner and I'll let you all know how it goes... you know, unless I doubt it while jumping off the roof >:)

Since "Lehane" is a Buffyverse "fact" rather than a matter of interpretation then personally i'm happy to see it as canon even though it hasn't appeared on screen or in the comics (though it almost did since in "No Future ..." Faith uses the alias Lyonne which is a posh, "Frenchified" variant of Lehane).

Unless she's also a ham radio operator...or for that matter, a fan of bingo.
As for insane Myspace pages, that's one reason I hate it and don't use it. And I'm one of the "kids these days."
As for Faith's last name, I got in a huge argument with my brother over the pronounciation of it. 'Twas the Internet that finally convinced him I was right.
BandofBuggered | May 23, 04:32 CET
menomgirl zeitgeist Saje; Lehane, well, Irish names, even obscure ones, are almost as predictable and safe in mass media (especially comic and TV) as Anglo-Saxon and "light German" ones. I know Albanian names aren't all that recognizable to the general public but (assuming the "real" Faith actually looks like ELiza, and I know she's half-Danish) she's still very much an "Eastern European type of gorgeous" and I still wish Joss had gone for a SLavic or Hungarian name, at least. (In a fic, in janauary '05, I wanted her last name to start with "W" since Buffy's last name starts with "S") so I just opened the Scranton PA phone book to the right spot and picked "Wyrofski.")
Still, it is a pretty name, and nicely unusual.
BandofBuggered ; Interesting. An argument over how to pronounce a name that's only been written so far. What settlement did you reach?
DaddyCatALSO | May 23, 04:43 CET
In corner one--the brother, who thinks that it is pronounced "luh-ain," with the h being silent.
Corner two has me, thinking it's "le-hAyn." As in how the writer Dennis and the politician Chris say it.
I found a soundbite online (since I can't read/write phonetically) and played it for him. Since that's how I've said it in my head, and since, as you have said, it's only been written, I call it a victory.
Like Mmmm-cookies.

"Lehane" works for me because a) it's a short hand for who Faith is and where she's from (Boston having such a big Irish-American population and - from films/books - seemingly having some pretty rough areas) and b) it means something to an English speaking audience (i.e. we can look up the meaning and discover "lance, spear" or "grey" as possible meanings for the name) which has relevance for the character (names are almost always important in Joss' stuff). Something like "Wyrofski" purely speaks to her ethnic background and doesn't say much (if anything) about the character.
(and I also don't get the 'S' and 'W' reference, especially given that an eastern European 'W' sounds like 'V')

It's more old prejudice than anything. I know about the melting pot (I'm sort of an example and my daughter way more so) but I just get to wishing for more ethnonyms in pop culture. (Hmm, did I coin a slogan? I hope not.) Heck, in my ficverse she gets engaged to a man named Doug Potashkin.
As for picking a "W," it was arithmetic. There are 3 letters between B & F and also 3 letters between S & W. Since Buffy and Faitha re soemtimes presented as mirror images, I figured why not.

Did we ever get a last name for Spike/William ? Or Angel/Angelus/Liam ?
I wonder what they registered baby Connor under for a last name. They were calling his dad "Mr. Angel" at the hospital I think I remember, so..."Connor Angel" then ? And someone jog my memory, how many names did Connor end up with ? Holtz renamed him Steven, right ? Did he get a new name with the memory wipe too, or was his forced-family mind-wiped into calling him Connor too ?
I think my favorite offhand name reveal on the show was Oz ending up as Daniel Osbourne, which might not have been mentioned more than that one time after Willow said it in class to Maggie Walsh. It made sense and Oz seemed to sort of fit Daniel. I wonder if he would've got "Danny" as a kid, being so little.

Kris; Nope, no last names for our various vamps. Since I have a shanshued Angel in my AU I had to come up with something so he , along with Buffy 's 3 children , is saddled in that universe with Herlihy.

Kris, I prefer La Velle. This could even be the title for the future movie about Xander's adventures in Africa.

They could have made Faith Italian; it certainly would fit her personality! She could have been something like Faith Salvatore or Faith Anzalone.
I like Lehane, though, because it is not as "obvious" as some Irish surnames (anything starting with O') can be. Also Saje's point about names' meanings being important. Plus it just sounds good together, because of the vowel sounds: the two long As make them fit quite well.
I love on Something Blue when Buffy and Spike are discussing the wedding invitations. "Are we going to put Spike, or William the Bloody? Cuz either way, it sounds weird." ..."What's wrong with Buffy?"
And yes, thanks to Tabula Rasa, I think that two of Buffy's children would have to be Joan and Randy. Although Rupert is an exceptionally strong name. And, of course, LaVelle.
...Ooh! Faith Kamehameha!

Their son (in the chute as we speak, as rodeo cowboys say) is Liam Sean; in my "Season 30" fics set in 2026 he's a senior in high school and All-Conference halfback, and looks like Angel.
Their older daughter is Joyce Anne, born 2010, basically the Cordelia of my fics, and looks like Buffy.
Joan would be great for their 3rd child, born 2015 and oddly resembles, well, Juliet Landau.
You didn't ask about the others but I love the sound of my own words:
Willow and Tara proceed in true-blue hippie-chick fashion. Tara's daughter, Summer Lavelle, born 2006, looks like and is shaping up to be a more powerful witch than either of her moms.
Willow's duaghter, Autumn Anne is the Buffy of the piece.
Xander and Anya go for extravagant. Their older girl is ALexandra Willow, born 2006, called Lexa. Their son, Nicholas, born 2009, is a top junior halfback. Third child born 2014 Anyita Taranya is called Nita..
By the time I got to Harmony and Jonathan I'd run out of ideas. Frank, never Francis, born 2008, is a soccer star. Charles, never Chuck or Charley, born 2010, is a science geek and the Willow of the piece.
Faith's daughter, from the Greek word charis meaning "grace," is Kharissa, also 2010, and the Xander of the piece. Faith is MIA and presumed dead so Harm and Jon have guardianship.
Cordelia has been divorced three times. The second and happiest and longest was to Georges Bergerac, their duaghter Dana was born 2014.
Dawn got pregnant her 4th year of med school, and her worthless husband deserted her, so she's been busy being a good mother and workaholic since 2014 when TK and BW (no names figured yet) were born.
No names for Giles and Jennie's or Wesley and Fred's children, also born 2006, at least the first ones.

"Did we ever get a last name for Spike/William ? Or Angel/Angelus/Liam ?"
Well, it's only appeared (to my knowledge) in one, not-definitely-canonical comic, but Spike has been given a last name in a published story. (Somewhat similarly to how Faith's surname first leaked out; but, no official confirmation, or denial, for this one yet, at least that I've heard about.) Peter David's "Spike: Old Times" one-shot established Spike's former name as being... William Pratt.
LKW | May 24, 06:10 CET
And I really hope that Joss adopts that one as canon as well, because it works so bloody brilliantly on several levels. Y'see, William Pratt was the real name of the actor, Boris Karloff...and Pratt/Karloff was one of Hollywood's most cultured and artistic souls, yet he was known mostly for playing a monster. Doesn't that match up perfectly with the duality of William and Spike?
Oh, and by the way, in the most recent (and final) Buffy novel, One Thing or Your Mother, author Kirsten Beyer established Principal Snyder's first name as Cecil. :)

... Albanian is not an Indo-European language ...
Yeah it is, it's just on its own branch. Hungarian and Finnish are (two of the) language isolates in Europe, maybe you were thinking of one of those dl ? It's true Albanians aren't Slavs though (ethnically at least, genetically - and therefore phenotypically - it's probably more complex with various invasions, migrations etc. down through the centuries).
Saje | May 25, 15:56 CET
LKW; Yeah, my original idea was to do stories about Autumn Rosenberg-Maclay's exp[eriences as a Slayer with too much adult involvement instead of too little, but after Joss bumped off most of the folks I was writing about I've gotten into prequels instead :-). Back when I started writing, around the first few weeks of 2002, I was wondering what the gang would be like when they got to be about a year younger than I was then, and went from there.
