July 25 2008

Today at Comic Con - the Joss Whedon Dark Horse panel. Not only will Buffy season 8 and the Shepherd Book mini-series get discussed but Dr. Horrible as well. Kickoff starts at 1.30pm PT. ETA At the moment io9.com is live blogging from the event and we're getting great "as it happens" comments from our Whedonesque posters in attendance. And the big news is that there will be more Dr Horrible.

And if anyone comes across any reports, please do post the links in the comments section.

Tomorrow is the Dollhouse panel.

If you're accessing whedonesque on your handheld, mobile phone, pda, etc, try m.whedonesque.com for easy mobile access.
I'm sat in the room now (with jewel staite as it happens).

Phots will be on gossi.Livejournal.com

Jed has got a freeze ray he plans to use on doctor steel (no really)
Sweet!! (Again I beg that someone videos this. If that is allowed...)
Are people posting here or are there any twitter feeds we should be following too? Very eager for reports!
we've got a camera so we'll film some of it..
Dr H just updated their twitter "drhorrible: Don't forget: If you're at the Con - Ballroom 20 at 1:30. Bring your freeze ray."
Jed has got a freeze ray he plans to use on doctor steel (no really)

That.
Is.
Awesome.
Are people posting here or are there any twitter feeds we should be following too? Very eager for reports!

I think both. I am following Ven from Save Hiatus, comiccon, Felicia Day, Wil Wheaton, Quoter Gal, bix, mcookies, lioness, Dr Horrible, (I think I got everyone.) So far nothing in depth, but it's fun. (Kind of wish I was there, but then I see a picture of the crowds and I remember that I hate crowds... unless there is mud and/or a mosh pit.)

we've got a camera so we'll film some of it..

Yay. :D

No "kinda" about it for me, if I had five grand I WOULD be there *sigh*
Awesome. Can't wait for further updates! And pics of Jed with the freeze ray are much appreciated.
Can someone please point me to someplace on Twitter I should be following?

Thanks
http://twitter.com/drhorrible
search for "drhorrible" and "feliciaday" for those two on twitter.

I *heart* felicia for her speechlessness in the presence of Jaqueline Carey. I love it when my fan worlds collide.
Someday I will have a close seat for one of these. But apparently not today.
That's when a freeze ray would come in handy...
NYPinTA, I'm (m_cookies on Twitter) not at CC, either, but I am living the dream vicariously through the Twitter updates and various blogs.

mouse, also follow theonetruebix on Twitter; he's posted some pix on Flickr from yesterday.
jewel is funny.
Yup, links to live blogging would be great. For some reason, none of the supposedly "live blogging" at online venues like ew.com or latimes (both advertising big comicon sections) has been particularly helpful. Doesn't the world know we want a blow-by-blow about all things Whedontastic? (And Feliciatastic and Maurissatastic, of course.)

Can't wait to see pix on gossi's site. A pic of Jed with freeze ray would be spectacular. And gossi, sitting with Kaylee?! Nice.

Sweet, that m.whedonesque.com link will let me keep up on this thread from my BlackBerry in my meeting!
Ooh, ooh gossi, ask her if Beckett comes back ! [/kidding] [/kinda kidding]

That's when a freeze ray would come in handy...

Or a folding chair.
Words can not describe how envy I am right now.
m'cookies, well, yeah, but I'm still following you. ;)

So how do we do this? Everyone in the room with a laptop gives their own account, and between the different versions you'll have pretty much everything, or should I just put my 'puter away and let gossi do the honors so you guys don't have to read everything more than once?
Everyone has a different perspective and notices different things, the more the better I say...
A variety of accounts would be tremendous, imo. Whatever you can give, deanna b, would be most appreciated by sad not-there people like me.
More is ... more!
For god's sake someone/everyone please just post! I am absolutely balls-in-the-air dying to know what went/is going down!
... or should I just put my 'puter away and let gossi do the honors so you guys don't have to read everything more than once?

You should report all the news starting with a vowel, gossi can do the consonants. Or rock, paper, scissors for it.

Seriously, you did an amazing job last year deanna b, I wouldn't blame you if you just wanted to sit back and relax. But I also wouldn't blame you if you did your own account and there was some duplication ;).

(we might get two slightly different takes on the same stuff - bonus !)
Does this always happen here when events like this take place? Got to say this is a first for me... refreshing refreshing waiting for news from people live on location..
Hmmm... wasn't there an episode of CSI where they took all the cameras from a group of kids there were taking photos at an event and they downloaded them and then some super duper computer that no State Agency has the money for took them all and made a 3D representation of the event that was almost like they just filmed it from right there in the room!? Wonder if all of the posts could be meshed together into something like that.

Or we could just wait for gossi. Personally, I want the super duper 3D version.

Someone should set up a live streaming camera - now that would be cool!
I just did that. I'm not at Comic-con though. Is that still cool ? I can't tell.

;-)
Can we get Dr. Horrible 3D glasses/goggles with which to view it? Hee.
more people better. I have little wireless coverage
I'm with you maxsummers, I'm with you. :P Has Jewel seen Dr. Horrible yet?
Depends on what you are doing in front of that camera, Saje.
Wearing a leather jacket and saying "Heyyyyy, sit on it !". Nothing's cooler than The Fonz, right ?
The guy who is responsible for the phrase, "jumped the shark"? Nah.
Oh, good. *unaverts eyes* I thought I heard some bom-chicka-wow-wow music there, and I was afraid.
I hope they let enough people in this time. There's lots of seats left in the back and on the left. There are ten empty seats in a row right to my left, and it's the same for most of the rows past the halfway point on the left side. Rather than getting a seat with a good view of the stage, I settled for getting a seat with a great view of the video screens.

People are filing in, but they tend to be fighting for seats on the right. Very few are coming over to where there's plenty of room.
"fighting for seats" is the kind of phrase that makes me happy to live this vicariously.
Oh, good. *unaverts eyes* I thought I heard some bom-chicka-wow-wow music there, and I was afraid.

Well, I didn't say I was wearing anything apart from the leather jacket ;-).
Also, I did set up a lively.com chat room for after hours Comic Con goers and non-goers to hang. Unfortunately, you can't use it with a Mac and I'm pretty sure Macs are the unofficial computer of Whedonites. ;P

Scott Allie introduces Joss. Captain Hammer comic on MySpace, hopes to do more of that, and more of Serenity. Season 8 continues. Sugarshock will finally be available in print soon.

Joss looks a little discheveled. Joss came out last year and talked about things he was going to be working on, and he's accomplished none of them, except Cabin In The Woods.

All of this is organized by Dark Horse. Joss has been collaborating with Scott Allie for years.

And there's this little thing they've put on the internet.

Introductions:
Melissa, Jed and Zach, the writers of Doctor Horrible.

Felicia, Moist, Nathan, Neil

Comedy bit between Nathan and Neil, Nathan pulls chair out so Neil falls on ground. "Whoops."

Would Joss ever consider approaching Russell T Davis with an idea for a musical episode of Torchwood? He'd like to approach RTD anyway, he's doing fine without him. Grumble, stealing my James, grumble.
Just saw Dr. Horrible again, with the end credits, and trough my foggy eyes, I saw a David Trachtenberg mentioned, is he family of?
Comedy bit between Nathan and Neil, Nathan pulls chair out so Neil falls on ground. "Whoops."

Hehe. That meanie.

No sign of Dr. Steele or his followers??
Veteran Comic Con Correspondent deanna b has all the details!
the Dr Steel ppl were planning on going without their "uniforms" to try and gain followers in a more subtle way

They were planning to hand out candy as people walked into the session or something... hope nobody's taking candy from strangers...

deannab, keep it up. You're doing great. Thank you so much.

I wonder if anyone will ask the "was that SMG?" question. I also wonder if anyone will ask about "Ripper." I know, not a "Ripper" panel. But still. Wasn't it at Comicon last year that plans for "Ripper" were discussed?
deanna b thankyouthankyouTHANKYOU!!!
deanna b, how was the applause? Standing ovation?
Total gossi envy. Life is so unfair. I mean what has he ever done for the fandom to deserve something like this? ;-)
Please let this conference go by without a single "Why do you write such strong female characters?". Anyways, thanks deannab! you're doing a great job.
Go deannab!
wilw @feliciaday: "I'm twittering under here." audience: "ooooohhhhhh!!!!" @feliciaday: *blush* *stammer* *keeps hands on table*

Hahaha.
Joss kills a lot of women, Yes, but keep his personal life out of it.

How does anyone cope with devestating news? There's some sort of pster with a cat. Comfort of people around him and the stories he loves.

Kitty Pride asks: (and Joss says "Nice!!") Will Fray get her own series? He'll kill her, he doesn't know how to do anything else. No, he just doesn't have time right now.

Last scene of Doctor Horrible blog, Billy is just devestated, it's the stark reality of the situation. Doctor Horrible got everything he ever wanted, but Billy lost everything.

Which Jossy thing has he done that really stuck with him? Nathan: the last thing is always the one that sticks with him. The Hammer is his penis. That was Zach's line. The beginning patter of Brand New Day, Neil took six hours learning it on his iPod. "This appears as a moral dillema, though at first I... fuck."

Felicia is Twittering under the table. *hoot* In the homeless shelter, she had a beautiful pair of shoes that you never see, but she kept falling.

Melissa has on video tape Joss acting out Captain Hammer's part.

End of Brand New Day, they were going to have a dance number, but they couldn't afford it, so make him a giant. Green screen construction paper in a park. Neil had to sing it fast, chipmunk style, so they could slow it down, then they just used the take he did normally instead.
wilw Officially stated: there will be another @drhorrible! 2 minutes ago from txt

Yeah, what happened there?
You left an italic tag open. I felt the tremors here, close one.
Your italic tag wasn't closed properly. But cheers for the update on Dr Horrible, I've added it to the entry.
I knew it, but for some reason I couldn't find it! Thanks for the fix. :)
More Dr. Horrible? Be still, my evil heart. Everyone grab onto something that's bolted to the ship. I think the internet may implode momentarily.

ETA: Melissa has on video tape Joss acting out Captain Hammer's part.

DVD extra?

Wait! What? Wait! Details? Wow!
Will iTunes Season Pass holders get Act IV at no additional cost? (Probably not...) Yea for more DH!
So, it's cool I'm cutting and pasting some of the fun stuff I see on twitter? Good.

This one from Wil Wheaton: wilw It's official: I will do anything to work with these guys. They are so awesome.
Joss' favorite death: Joyce. Not in a "Yee, fun!" way. Any killed by accident? If by accident, you mean that they were suddenly leaving or not available for sequels, then yes,

There will be another part of Doctor Horrible.

Joss, Nathan, Doogie. Doogie?? Nathan: Yes, it was a medical show you did years ago, it was really good. Neil: Oh, the heroin years.

Joss is older, and balder-slash-wiser than went they made Firefly. Any episode they make is a bonus, and any they can't, he can put on the internet now. This was a model for a new way to put out things, that are for us and not so much for *certain other people*. He works with studio execs, but...

And Doctor Horrible is about putting power in other hands. The wrong hands,

Neil came up with the "shoulder dance" during Freeze Ray. He did the magic thing with his fingers when he was bored, and they decided to use that.
News of Part 4 made my wifi die for a few minutes! It got better.
Heh. I loved the shoulder dance thing. Cracks me up every time.

BadAstronomer: Breaking news: Nathan Fillion's is actually shaped like a hammer. He said it himself.
The *hoot* for Felicia was like... a bad hoot?
'Cause my dictionary is showing two very different things and I'm wondering if it was a bad or good thing...
More Dr. Horrible confirmed? Best Comic-Con ever. :P

This is so awesome!
Io9.com is also blogging. May change the URL to that.
doctor horrible sequel one day

Oz returning to buffy
Neil: Oh, the heroin years.

Funny guy. Or strong-willed, either way, nice one ;-).
BadAstronomer Idea: Get Nathan Fillion and John Barrowman on a panel together. But it would have to be held in a mud pit. Or maybe on a trampoline. half a minute ago from web

Ditto!! Er, I mean, that's just wrong....
I love the idea of more Dr. H!

I love the opening patter of brand new day!

Oh, and I love the finger motion thing... I can do that, too!

I love exclamation point!
If by accident, you mean that they were suddenly leaving or not available for sequels, then yes,

Wha? Who? When?
Whedon comments on the Buffy singalongs. He says "Shut Up Dawn" is just a mean song, and he's in favor of Dawn. via io9

As a younger sister I say, Amen!! (But damn, Dawn was annoying sometimes.)
More Doctor Horrible? Awesome. Time to call a maid... :)
Yes! More Doctor Horrible......that has made me so happy...I have watched it over and over!

And I too love that little shoulder dance...one of the highlights for me...ah it's the simple things:)

Thanks to our reporters!
I've been going nuts following the panel on twitter. I'm using twitter search,BTW, it's very useful. just search 'Joss' or 'dr horrible' or anything like that. glad to see there's a thread here!
I can visit vicariously through all of you who are there.
thanks!
What are everybody's favorite musicals on the panel? They all get excited and start answering. You can tell that their picks all influenced Dr. Horrible. They include: Into the Woods, Sweeney Todd (Whedon), Little Shop of Horrors (Fillion), South Park, Singing in the Rain (Whedon), Les Miserables, Rent (Harris).
via io9

I love Singin in the Rain! Happiest movie ever, IMO.
I definitely get a Rent-y vibe at the end of Act 1.
I'm not a huge fan of Rent. I dont know Into the Woods...but the rest are all amazing. Sweeney Todd and Javert are two roles I would *kill* to do!

Literally?....maybe....
savehiatus They're going to take video submissions for the evil league of evil for the dr horrible dvd half a minute ago from txt

wilw Joss, praising Nathan Fillion's smarmy acting: "Shatner, your time is done." 2 minutes ago from txt

Ha.
Nathan IS Capain Hammer. What, you thought that was acting? It's actually shaped like a Hammer. I showed it to Joss once and now he won't stop going on about it. That was a great day, the day you got the part of Mal.

THere will be more of Groupie #1. "Sorry, honey, I love you with all my heart, but..." "And I love you with my hammer."

Nathan: Felicia combines geeky with sexy-hot. She rides that fine line.

Was Xander the character who was to be outed instead of Willow? He was going to out everyone. He only has two tricks, gay, or dead. No, actually, that's not true. It was because Seth was leaving, and Oz will be back in the comic, BTW, but it was just that they needed something to follow Oz, so thought, well, it's college, she's experienting, and then it became a great romance.

What ever happened to Jesse, he was supposed to be Xander and Willow's best friend. Joss: Thank you for exposing my failure as a writer.

Nathan" Who's wearing a Hammer shirt? Yay. Anyone wearing a Doctor Hammer shirt? Get out. Who here is Moist?

Joss hates the "Shut up Dawn" at singalongs, but loves the poppers at the end of Under Your Spell.

What is your favorite musical. Joss: Sweeney Todd and Singing in the Rain. Felicia: Into the Woods, she was Cinderella in college, her mom says she was really good. Little Shop of Horrors, of course. South Park, Neil loved Les Miserables, and loved being in Rent. Moist likes LSoH, and also Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

Captain Hammer is... awesome He stands up and poses. Neil pulls the chair out from under him and he mock-falls.

Nathan apologized "I'm sort of a dick" to the extra who was supposed to touch him and he cringes, so he wouldn't feel bad.

They'll take video submissions for the Evil League of Evil for the DVD. Soundtrack downloads will be available in a couple weeks.

Soundtrack will be available for download in a couple of weeks says Whedon. via io9
Jed announces the Hammer DVD. He says they'll do some new things: "Commentary the Musical." He says if you haven't heard of this, you'll find out. They're also going to have a contest. They'll take video submissions for the Evil League of Evil. 3 minutes, like you're applying to be on Survivor. 10 best on DVD. We'll do that after soundtrack and t-shirts.

gasp!
This is just great. Thanks so much for updating us!
Oh no! They are going to be just swamped with videos, I bet! Hahaha.

Captain Hammer is... awesome He stands up and poses. Neil pulls the chair out from under him and he mock-falls.

How long is the panel, anyhow? I've got actual work to do. ;) (Not that I want to... )
The *hoot* for Felicia was like... a bad hoot?

No, it's just when she said it she didn't realize that it sounds so dirty, and the audience's collective mind is, of course, in the gutter, so "Whoooo!"
My head is going crazy trying to think of a good video for the ELoE!

Thanks deanna b! *for the hoot explanation, and for the reports!*

Killing puppies is pretty evil. Just sayin'.
I don't even know what to say to that, Saje. You are a new kind of evil I don't want to know.
I want to audition for the ELOE! Gotta think of an alter-ego!
Thank you deanna b and everyone else for your reports, that was wonderful!
Yes, thanks so much, everyone.
Is it over now? Somehow I'm always left wanting more whedon.
Just confirmed. Joss'd will have video and audio recordings for uploading in the next couple days.
deannab is my favorite rockstar! thank you so much!
Killing puppies is pretty evil. Just sayin'.

I read that as killing GUPPIES at first... I was wondering how well Angelus would fit in with the ELE...
Merci, merci, deanna b! And Team Coverage!
So... no Dr. Steele at all? What about the Freeze Ray??
You rule deannab! great coverage.
Yeah... didn't they use the Freeze Ray?

My thanks added to those already expressed for the reports
I read that as killing GUPPIES at first...

Pfft, killing guppies is only "slightly underhand", not even in the same league ... of evil.

I want to audition for the ELOE! Gotta think of an alter-ego!

Puppy Killah!™ has already gone, just so you know.

Thank-you so much to deanna b and everyone that posted from the room, you guys utterly rule. Your fingers should be sainted but without the downside of people chopping them off to sell the bones as religious relics. Unchopped sainted fingers is what I wish for you.
How long is the panel, anyhow? I've got actual work to do. ;) (Not that I want to... )

Sorry, I should have marked the last segment "End of Panel" at the end.

And sorry that I missed lots of stuff. I'm a crap typer.
You did great, no need to apologise!
io9 has a much fuller live blog. I just grabbed things I thought would be of most interest right now. I'm sure once you all get settled and write up con reports, (pretty please) we'll flock to them like things that flock to good stuff. :D
Yeah, I think you got in everything people needed to understand what was going on. Great quick summary.
Yep, no complaints here. Salient points, bit of the humour, s'all good. Just like being there if the hall was segmented into small rooms (with a carpet that needs hoovering) and a large screen in front of each attendee.
'Twitter is over capacity.'

Amen on the "great reporting!" Looking forward to getting the pics and videos too. :-)
Thanks deanna b, for making us feel like we were there! :-)

Thank you one and all for the reporting. If I can't be there, I'm glad you are.

*(humming "We do the weird stuff")*
Beth'll there are a number of Dr. Horribles walking around.
Some photos from TV Squad
G4 (Gamer Channel) may have some highlights from this panel. They have been cover Comic Con since yesterday. My DVR is set to record the live coverage. I promise to report anything I see interesting.
I saw a costume in lj's drhorriblesing. it was a good one.
This panel would make a great extra for the DVD. Is that possible?

*doesn't know how all that "rights" stuff works*
Thanks deanna b! You made it so much better for those of us who couldn't be there.
And if you want to do it again next year... :)
Thanks for the updates folks!!!

Just like being there... but without the sweaty people! :)
Beth'll, If you go to the I09 blog entry, you'll find that they've updated it with a video of some people in DrH costumes.
Joss hates the "Shut up Dawn" at singalongs

See, this is one of the many things I love about Joss; he has the integrity not to dump on or disavow his own work. Because no matter how vocally some aspect of the show(s) may be disliked, there is someone out there to whom it's the most important thing, and he doesn't cut their legs out from under them.

And include me in the Dawn-love.
Dr. Horrible screening hours from now already obviously needs larger than 6B. Anyone here got any contacts inside Comic-Con? Pitch as good PR opportunity. Ballroom 20 after Eisners? Switch with Spike & Mike? If you've got any interesting connections, work them now. ;)
Will the soundtrack include songs from Act IV?

Joss mentioned that the soundtrack will be available for download in "a couple of weeks." This implies either:
a. They've been busy on Act IV songs and will squeeze them in
... or
b. They'll issue an Act IV "addendum" to the soundtrack later

Ideas? Answers?
What a great read! Exciting stuff. Thanks DeannaB!
I wonder if anyone will ask the "was that SMG?" question.

Oh, that's right, yes someone did, no, it's not. It's not Nicholas Brendon either. Just an extra.

Joss is older, and balder-slash-wiser than went they made Firefly. Any episode they make is a bonus, and any they can't, he can put on the internet now. This was a model for a new way to put out things, that are for us and not so much for *certain other people*. He works with studio execs, but...

WHEN they made Firefly. (Sorry, weird typo.) The question was how Joss feels about starting another series when all his series always get horribly cancelled. So the first part was about Dollhouse, and then he's talking about Doctor Horrible after the mention of the internet. Sorry I didn't make that clear. Or evenly not completely opaque.
SteveP, I don't think there is an Act IV. They just said they'd do more Dr. Horrible, IIRC. (From other's reports.) Just that they want to do a sequel. So I would think that means that this soundtrack that is going to be released will just be for these three episodes. Unless I missed something..?
OK NYPinTA, thanks for that clarification.
Dr. Horrible (part 2/Act IV?) news = made of amazing. I'm guessing it'll probably take a while to get to us, though.

Love the fact that Joss hates the 'shut up Dawn' tendency at sing-alongs. I've never been to one of those, but it sounds like an unnecessary line. Plus, like others upthread, I actually really like Dawn. She's an interesting character.

Thanks for the updates everyone! Great typing there deannab! And also, how did gossi end up next to jewel? Will there be something to gossip (heh, only one extra letter needed) about soon?

So, how did the crowd react? Was it filled with fans, ending with thunderous applause? Did anyone "boo" Nathan, or was it just bix? ;)

Also very interested to find out if the Sing-Along will be an actual Sing-Along this evening and what the reception of it will be like. I'll stay tuned (except, only, probably not right now, because it's 4:20 here and I should really get some sleep ;)). Too bad I can't be there to meet up with fellow whedonesquers (all this time spent here, and I have no clue what most of you guys look like :)), should be fun. Any whedonesque meet-ups going on?

Also: where are the whedonesque exclusive lies we were promised weeks ago?! ;)
Although, an Act IV, V, VI, VII, uh, whats the next Roman Numeral..., would be great.
The 'soundtrack will be available for download' means no actual CD?? 'Cause if there'll be no cd, I'll be sad...
Wow thanks Deanna B and everyone else who chimed in their two cents worth.

The ELOE application invitation is an amazing idea. (I kinda wish I owned a horse right now, so I could do weird digital manips of it's mouth!) With all these extras, I'm starting to anticipate a box-set sized release!

If that wasn't SMG I wonder if they consciously hired a look-alike? She does seem to be quite prominently seated next to the groupies, is all I'm sayin'.

ETA I would pay many, many crisp dollars for a sing-along comic. A CD and the basic tale, told in comic form, with a 'Play Track *' at each appropriate point.
(Actually, I lie. I would probably just get it with my credit card...)

The 'soundtrack will be available for download' means no actual CD?? 'Cause if there'll be no cd, I'll be sad...

I'm guessing it'll be like the episodes. Online first. On a CD second. (At least I hope. I'm old school. I like having a CD in my hand. With pictures. And liner notes.)

[ edited by NYPinTA on 2008-07-26 03:45 ]
From Felicia's twitter:

“2000 people waiting for Dr Horrible screening already. They're adding more screening rooms more info TBD”

And on Dr. Horrible's twitter:

"Adding more screenings at Comicon tonight!"
"Over capacity on screening. More added in diff rooms"
...

And yeah, I hope there'll be a cd, first because I'm old school too... must have the cd im my hands, second: there's no itunes in Brazil (yet).

[ edited by maxsummers on 2008-07-26 03:51 ]
Yes. Liner notes. And pictures. They be good.

Also: woot, more screening rooms! :D
Some of us got in the room where the show is being shown tonight. Hundreds if not thousands still outside. It was just announced by Dr. Horrible that more rooms are being added.
maxsummers, what Jed said was that the Cd would be "available for download"- which sounds like iTunes, unfortunately.
Lioness, yeah, I got that but I was wondering if maybe later will be an actual cd, or if it will be just on itunes.
iTunes, which won't play on my Creative Zen. :(
It's probably difficult to get a real CD pressed and booklets printed, etcetera, because they'd a) have to hire a pressing plant or something similar for what will possibly be a limited seller compared to albums by big artists, thus maybe taking more money than it would make and b) because of a myriad of other possible problems, including distribution (although they've possibly already got that figured out for the DVD) and things I'm not even thinking about now (tired, need sleep).

Having said that, I'm still hoping there'll be an actual CD. I know most of us would buy it, so it would be a guaranteed limited succes (but maybe not a big enough one, to warrant actual production).

ETA: if they do sell it as mp3's, here hoping it'll be available on something other than iTunes *crosses fingers*. But if it does appear there, and if it's available internationally, I'll be sure to buy it because it's joss and co. Normally though: iTunes? Not-so-much :)

Well, how do local bands get CDs made? The ones that don't have contracts with some big record label? They should ask them how they do it, and ... do that.
Here's my notes from the Stargate Atlantis panel:
Jewel Staite misses her Shiny. She doesn't miss her ruffly dress. Bob Picardo is awesome. Now the Stargate writers are promising to pillage the cast of Firefly one by one until they've got them all. Jewel wants to make Nathan get cast as a wraith so that he would have to put on a bunch of prosthetics. The next question was also for Jewel... but they called her Kaylee. They should have just had a Firefly memorial panel or something.

How does working on Stargate compare to your work on other Sci-Fi shows?
Jewel: This one doesn't get cancelled.
God, what a day. Only made better by Wil Wheaton's Twitter about Hollywood douchebags standing in the Exhibit Hall Aisle at Comic-Con talking about how great the other one was. I laughed for five minutes.

Nothing to add except thank deanna b for the great reporting. I'd read Wil's Twitter about more Doc Horrible already but not the other stuff.

Also, I know it isn't my place to say so, but I think Jonathan Reilly should have a guest color for posting. If not for anything else like loaning out his house, at least for that fabulous gigantic chair!

[ edited by Tonya J on 2008-07-26 04:17 ]
No, there are places like CDBaby that will do that all for a reasonable price- independent artists use them a lot.
That is an awesome chair. Where do you get furniture that freaking big??
Apologies on Act IV confusion. My cousin was the one who asked that and had only wanted to know what each would have liked to see happen if there were one. They basically just answered that there would be more. Not specifically an act 4.

ETA: Never mind. Am idiot. Went to wrong room. Put us in 5AB for earlier screening.

Jewel Staite misses her Shiny.

ohwww... we miss it too!

About the cd: that's what I was thinking... about the indie bands... I have friends who made a cd here in Brazil, and I've heard it's a LOT more expensive to do it here than on the US. Althogh they only did like, 2000 copies, and Dr. Horrible would need a LOT more. I don't know... I'll just keep hoping, I guess.

[ edited by maxsummers on 2008-07-26 04:18 ]
I want a "hard copy" CD too. CDbaby is awesome. I hope they go that way. I really don't enjoy the idea of iTunes only.
I think the sing along at D*C is going to need a bigger room....
Many thanks deannab, it was nice to come back from work late tonight and have a full report of all I've been missing.

Saje said: Unchopped sainted fingers is what I wish for you.

I have no particular response to that, just thought it bore repeating. Sounds like a lyric from a Murder Rubicon song, if they ever stopped drinking tea long enough to write and record some. Or maybe a really messed up greeting card.

NYPinTA: VIII. Crazy Romans.

I am still adjusting to the on-line world beyond e-mail... so forgive me... but what's all this "twitter" stuff about?
If I'm reading http://cdbaby.net/ stuff correctly. It looks like they don't make the CDs. You have to make the cds and send them to cdbaby. They sell and distribute them only.

Looks like Cafepress does it

catherine, twitter is a service where you can post what you are doing at the moment. Like 'on the way to comicon' or 'having lunch' or whatever u want. Sounds silly, but it's quite addictive.

Felicia Day updates her twitter quite often, and she has been posting updates about comicon. Also, Dr. Horrible has a twitter account.

...

And yeah, keep the acts coming...

IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, XII, XIII, XIV, XV... L... M...
www.twitter.com

It's a micro blog. You update what you are doing or a random thought or whatever, you you only get 140 characters to do it with. (So no rambling!) And you can "follow" other peoples twitter blogs as they follow you, and you see what they are up to as they post. It's silly and yet kind of addcitive.
Ha, so I'm getting a feeling that twitter is both silly and addictive? I'd better not investigate; I suspect that such a thing could be my undoing!
One of the cool things about Twitter is that you can send and receive on your cell via SMS, hence the 140 char limit.

The downside is that the service suffers from performance problems and occasional meltdowns. Twitter became very popular very quickly. As well, its creators didn't anticipate that there would be these celebrity twitterers with tens of thousands of followers each. This has resulted in scaling issues that aren't easily solved.
I'm curious , does anyone here not want more Dr Horrible? At the moment I'm veering to the school of "more would only spoil it".
My computer suddenly won't let me use 3 letters so this post might turn out interestingly:

In wh_t form_t will the Dr Horrible se_uel be in? Internet?

Did they discuss the Book comic?

Simon since my main complaint was that it felt like a first act, a pilot or a beginning to something that may never happen, you can put me in the Want to See More camp.
I too hope for a physical CD. My husband uses kunaki to distribute his music, it's a CD/DVD distribution company. They press on demand.
ETA: if they do sell it as mp3's, here hoping it'll be available on something other than iTunes

If they do sell it as MP3s here's hoping they, err, sell it as MP3s (no DRM on MP3s so we can all play it anywhere ;).

Not a physical CD doesn't bother me - Joss could do one of his mighty posts on here with the equivalent of liner notes and i'd be just as happy - cos I normally buy a CD, read the notes, rip it to hard-drive and then stick it in a box, never to be seen again BUT not iTunes would be very handy because I don't use it (i'd make an exception though, as I will if/when Dr H sells internationally).

And I get where Simon's coming from, right now it's small but perfectly formed and any more might just smear that perfection out over a wider area rather than add anything. But that said, the way it ended is open to more stories IMO so it can be done, it just has to be done well. Kinda lucky it's Joss/Jed/Zack/Maurissa then, eh ;).
I found some short clips on You Tube. On this one the cast talks about their favourite musicals. Here NPH talks about the shoulder dance, here about the singing and finally Felicia talks about Penny's faith. - Oh, and I want a CD too. And I think I want more Dr. Horrible. Watching it full made it feel like it was an introduction, it showed "how it all started". Then again, it does work as a complete piece as well. The continuation is going to be tricky though. I was hesitant about a sequel at first but now I think it can be done. And hopefully there will be a lot more.
Thanks, Valerie!

And yes, I get where Simon is coming from too. The way it is now, it's a perfect short movie/musical, with logical bookended events for the opening and closing. Still, if anyone can make more work, it's Joss and co. Also: we'd get more songs. Songs are fun.
I think ultimately for the creative team, any "This is a wonderful, stand-alone piece of art" sentiment is going to be (or has been, apparently) overwhelmed by the "Boy, we had a hell of a lot of fun making this, and people seem to dig it, so let's do more" part.
Simon, regarding more Dr. Horrible (or not):

I think it's a good idea if Joss & team get enough time to do it right.. With the first installment nobody knew they were doing it so they could do it at the proper pace. Now that they're living in a fishbowl we drooling fans will be clamoring for "more! faster!" In the long term the quality of what they deliver will determine the enduring value of the piece, so let's give them space to breath.
Thank you, Valerie!

Someone kind of far away from the speakers and the screen posted some nice long vids.
Joss's introduction and the first few questions.
Nathan's elegant formulation of what is lost and gained in Act III, which may well serve as the starting point for future analyses, if he has his way.
This one begins as a discussion of Nathan's privates, then somehow turns risque.
About putting power in different hands.

I can't believe what I just read: an Entertainment Weekly summary of the "Horrible" panel that contains lots of details but absolutely no mention of more "Horrible" in the future. What? Either EW is falling down on the job, big time, or...?

Read here.

Ditto the eonline account of the panel. No mention of a sequel. Ooooo-kay. Are these outlets existing in a Bizarro World? Or are we?

[ edited by phlebotinin on 2008-07-26 14:34 ]
You could do "more" by treating Acts I, II, and III as acts 1, 3, and 5, and then putting in acts 2 and 4.
htom, that's intriguing... it would let them keep Penny in the new material without altering the (in)famous tragic ending.
I don't know anything about producing a physical dvd, but it is no hurdle getting distribution through channels like amazon.com. They will basically list anything remotely reasonable if you ask them to, taking a cut, of course. Then you just need a place to put them while you wait, and someone to fill the orders. I'm sure, having managed to produce this complex work, that would be as nothing.
Simon, agreed, while I enjoyed muchly, it feels complete as is and I'm not clamoring for more. Still, if they feel they have another story to tell / more songs to sing with these characters, I'll tune in of course. I hope it isn't just more for the sake of more, or even more because they all had so much fun together, but rather more because they really have a brilliant idea for a sequel (or prequel? or... medi-quel? is there a word for that?).

Let Down, maybe your computer is tired of being asked questions and that's why it's not allowing q&a? OK, that was lame, apologies. (Also entirely OT but why are you Let Down?)
@daylight from other thread:

The "wet sloppy kiss" refers to the question DeannaB referenced above: "Would Joss ever consider approaching Russell T Davis with an idea for a musical episode of Torchwood? He'd like to approach RTD anyway, he's doing fine without him. Grumble, stealing my James, grumble."

Joss was just making a crack about the notion of approaching RTD with a Jossian idea - RTD, who doesn't need Jossy-ideas, 'cause he's doing just fine without Joss (was the implication) so instead, Joss would just give him a wet-sloppy etc.

I can't brain very well, 'cause tired, but hope that is answerfyin' enough...
phleb, can't speak for EW or eonline, but Jed pretty directly said that would be "more" Dr. Horrible. As heard from the horse lackey's mouth.
You could do "more" by treating Acts I, II, and III as acts 1, 3, and 5, and then putting in acts 2 and 4.

Funny, this was exactly what my son said he would not want to see happen.

I am actually pretty surprised so many people are saying they do not want to see more. Many people called this an origin story. What is the point of an origin story if there is no continuing story of the character it originated?

From the first moment I saw it I felt like it was the great first act of a broadway musical and the end was time for the intermission. I just did not want the intermission to be of infinite length. ;-)
Well, if it's not the same people saying they don't want more as those that called it an origin story then it makes perfect sense ;).

Personally I don't think you could fill in between the acts because absolutely everything we saw would be coloured by the utter desolation of "... a thing" that we knew was coming. Course, a brilliant writing team could probably somehow play off that. Anybody know one ? ;-)
Hey, I work at Eonline and the reason we didn't mention the very likely possibility of a sequel is that Joss already said they want to do a sequel before Dr. H was even released to the public. It was actually the very first Q asked after the Dr H screening at CAA (like 1 min after credits) and Joss said "only totally!" That first news abt a possible sequel was a definite maybe, and this was a maybe definitely, and it seemed too much the same to report twice. Also, we are so so tired. And we have editors who never let us have any fun. :) BTW, the watchwithkristin Flickr has some more pix too if you need/want.
newcj, why can't it be both an origin story and finished? The strength of Dr. Horrible in this case, was the duality of Billy/Dr. Horrible and the journey he took in becomming Dr. Horrible. That is what was interesting. At least, to me. What is less interesting is what happens when Dr. Horrible has arrived as a supervilain. Yes, I'm sure this creative team can think of fun ways to mess up the status quo and get some more mileage out of this idea, but truly, the whole point of Dr. Horrible is that it's a finished origin story with the endresult (a supervillain) less interesting that the dramatic, funny and involving journey of how he got to be that way.

But then again, I was one of the people who didn't (and still doesn't) get your original complaint of it not being finished, so there is that :).
I'm curious , does anyone here not want more Dr Horrible? At the moment I'm veering to the school of "more would only spoil it".

I'm in the camp that was fine with it being a one-off only, because that ending was like a definitive iron door slamming shut. His fate was sealed and the audience left to imagine that fate. However, someone above mentioned a prequel and that's something I can get behind. I have a feeling it would be put together/written a lot better than a famous movie prequel trilogy (of course, they used Episode rather than Act but apples/oranges).

ETA - if Joss & Co. do a sequel, then cool. I don't want the power of that ending diminished somehow though, that's my concern.

Hey, jengod, we got it! (Must have hit the "submit" button thrice? You guys *are* tired.) That's interesting. I hadn't realized that Joss had said anything about a sequel so definitively - in a "maybe" kind of way - before the Dark Horse panel. Or maybe the message is that what he said at Dark Horse was along the same "maybe" lines as he had been saying before, and so it's (still) not really that definitive? Anyway, thanks for weighing in. If you're Jennifer Godwin, whose byline I see a lot, keep up the good work! Edited to add: I see you posted the story on Dark Horse. Thanks for that.

Thanks also to SoddingNancyTribe for weighing in, too. Horse lackey's mouth, eh?

[ edited by phlebotinin on 2008-07-26 16:47 ]
I was going to quote a whole bunch of GVH's post, but maybe I should just go with WGVHS. (Nah, too many letters.)

I don't feel the need for a sequel--I think I'd love to see some completely different stories (also starring NPH!). However, I have utmost confidence that Joss & Co. will pull it off in a way that makes me say, "Oh, of course they had to do that!"

Besides the fact that I disagree...well...totally, how do you know what the whole point of Dr. Horrible is? It seems like there have been quite a few differing opinions on that.

Sure, Dr. Horrible is now a recognized, card carrying super-villain, (The ELoE must have cards, right?) but his face at the end does not look like a man reveling in his life of villainy. Now he has dug the hole, does he try to climb out, does he dig it deeper or do something else entirely? Numbness wears off after a while and you are left with yourself in the new situation that you have made, was made for you, or happened while you were being numb and were not paying attention.

Since the story is about him, we are not talking about a 1 dimensional character there solely to mess up the world so the hero can save the day. He is the one with the layers and the conflicts. Peter Parker became a super hero, is that the end of what made his story interesting? Dr. Horrible could be a really interesting character and I would love to see him developed further. Sure, if he was being handed over to another team to develop, I'd say no thank you, but this group has a pretty good track record of going for the complex and interesting in characters. (At least Joss does, and I expect the others will develop one...a track record, I mean.)
I agree with newcj. The look of devastation on Billy's face - the final thing we see - does not slam the door shut on future stories. If anything, it provokes me to wonder what is left of Billy and what course he will now take as a conflicted "Horrible." It all vaguely reminds me of the Illyria character struggling with the bits of Fred left inside. That's a stretch, I know (so many non-parallels), but still. I can't help feeling that vibe, as silly as it may be.

I understand the "don't mess with perfection" issue, but if Joss and the team want to take the story of Billy/Horrible further, I cannot wait to see what they come up with.
I'm not gonna write a full analyses about why I want or not more Dr. Horrible and just say that: I want more Dr. Horrible because I NEED to hear more of Dr. Horrible singing! It's not enough NPH singing in other Joss' musicals, I NEED Billy buddy! =P

Sure, more is not, sometimes, better... but in this case, I'd happily take the risk.
Heh, jcs, us TLA-user-name folks have got to stick together ;)

newcj, I'm not claiming to know what the whole point of Dr. Horrible is, I'm putting forward what I think the whole point of Dr. Horrible is. Because you asked - even if that was semi-rhetorically:

I am actually pretty surprised so many people are saying they do not want to see more. Many people called this an origin story. What is the point of an origin story if there is no continuing story of the character it originated?

This is what I was disagreeing with (not with the question if there could be a continuation). I think that thematically, and storywise, there's no denying the fact that Dr. Horrible was about Billy's transformation into Dr. Horrible and all the lovely moral dillema's that transformation sketches. I'd go as far as to say that that, indeed, was the whole point.

The basic set-up of Dr. Horrible, in my mind, is contained. Maybe not persé storywise (though I think it is), but certainly in the way it works on a meta-level. It 'tricks' us into thinking it's one thing in Act I & II and then drops the bombshell on us in Act III changing the way we view the entire thing. It's a meta-twist. Any continuation will now be a very different beast in overall feel (and more drastically different than with 'lighter' and 'darker' seasons of one of Joss' television shows).

This was not an 'origin' story like in the comic books, where we know how a character is supposed to end up. That is usually just a method to color in your main character and have him have some motivation for what he's doing in your stories. Here, the fact that this was a supervillian origin story at all could even be called one of the surprises of Act III.

But yes, like I said above, this doesn't mean more can't be added. There's always loose ends or left-over ambiguity. Just look at Buffy. It had a good ending in S5. And it continued. Then it had a good ending in S7 and it continued again. And I'm sure the S8 comics will have a good ending yet again, which then does not exclude any future continuation either :). Just like phlebotinin, I feel that the last shot does not a priori shut the door on any possible sequels. I'd imagine that was probably even the intent of Joss & co.

So: can there be a sequel? Yes. Should there? I don't know, there doesn't need to be. I love the fact that we see that Billy is still in there, numbed and silent and that we can imagine how it must be for him, to constantly be confronted with the monster he became when he lost the one thing he loved. This left-over ambiguity, I feel, is a strength, not something that needs resolving.

To my mind, this has the risk of being like continuing 'The Usual Suspects' as soon as we know who Keyser Soze is. That's a movie that ended in an open way as well: Keyser Soze is still 'free' and fooled the entire justice system. But the movie itself was about the briliant ruse he played on everyone, not about him answering for his crimes. There's no need to have the 'further adventures of Keyser Soze', though it's possible. In the same way I feel that 'Dr. Horrible' was not working up to the 'further adventures of Dr. Horrible, supervillain' (but was telling the story of how a reasonably normal, likeable person, can conceivable become a villain).

But, while not necessary (and involving a certain risk in devaluing what went before), with a creative team as good as this one at the reins, more Dr. Horrible will probably work and I'll probably love it (plus: we'll have more songs!) and I'm already actually, kinda totally looking forward to seeing more. But, again, I feel there's no need whatsoever to do it and the fact that Dr. Horrible was an origin story, to my mind, is no argument that there needs (let me note that "needs" is my word, not newcj's) to be a continuation, which is why I'm not surprised others are expressing the sentiment they'd maybe rather not have a continuation.
Showing up way too late for anyone to read, which is probably just as well, since I have little to say. Dr. Horrible was the best of the 8 panels I saw this weekend. Also the bluest. Even the Battlestar Galactica panel moderated by Kevin Smith didn't seem quite as dirty. Or funny.

I don't know if the "Act IV" confusion was totally clarified. The questioner asked about act 4 and the panel, in the form of Joss and Jed, said "we're not telling." Because they really mean to make more, as others have said.
Now he has dug the hole, does he try to climb out, does he dig it deeper or do something else entirely?

Yes, and what does his next invention do? And what will he sing about it? And how does he function under Bad Horse's leadership when he's actually not all that good at being bad?

On the sequel question, usually I find that good stories have an end that can stand as is or could be continued. This is one of those.
