Jewel Staite talks about Firefly, bondage, cheeseburgers. io9.com interviews Jewel Staite about what she thinks Kaylee is doing right now, what it was like to gain weight for Firefly, and why she is always tied up in Stargate: Atlantis.

I like her idea of what Kaylee's up to now.
Making babies with Simon? Me too. 'Cept now, I'd like to see him besotted with her for a change.

Preggers Kaylee. How cute. How perfect!
Weird, I hadn't noticed that before but she does end up the damsel a fair bit (course, Keller's a fairly timid character out of her comfort zone so it makes sense for her arc to be from damsel to kick-ass).

Sounds like there're some more JS heavy episodes coming up, good to hear (the one with the parasite centred on Keller but she spent most of it out of scene and when she was in it, as Jewel mentions, she was lying on a bed covered in alien).
I always liked Kaylee's look in Firefly. She was cute and normal and was noticeably different from the usual body type that gets cast in most T.V. shows. I must admit I was a bit sorry to see she got so lean for Serenity. It didn't seem right for Kaylee. Adam too.
She was cute and normal ...

Although what one might have considered "normal" for Kaylee was not what was normal for Jewel.
As always, a topic from Jewel brightens the day. I hope and pray that Joss finds a space to squeeze her into "Dollhouse". Wouldn't that be spectacular!

I run far ahead of myself.
Madhatter, since Jewel is a regular on Atlantis and lives in Vancouver, that would take an awful lot of coordination and doesn't at all seem likely.

Does anyone else not want every single Whedonverse actor to show up in Dollhouse?

Ok. Just me then.
Maddy, I think that would be great to see her on Dollhouse.
It isn't just you, Tamara. Frankly, if Dollhouse were to become a never-ending stream of Whedonverse alums (which it would have to be if everyone's stated wishes were realized), I'd get annoyed quickly if only because it would constantly take me out of the show.
Does anyone else not want every single Whedonverse actor to show up in Dollhouse?

Since you opened the door, may I add Alyson Hannigan and Emma Caulfield to the list?

I know, I'm so greedy!
I think he was trying to close the door, actually :).
Madhatter, at least AH works on the same lot and Emma seems to be available and lives in the same country, but still, No. I don't want them on Dollhouse. I want new people to fall in love with. All new.
I don't think familiar faces would necessarily take you out of Dollhouse. (Like everyone, I have no idea what it is but can't stop speculating about it.) Doesn't it take itself out of itself several times per episode? At least from how it's been described?
I think I know what would and would not take me out of the show, thanks. ;)
I must admit I was a bit sorry to see she got so lean for Serenity. It didn't seem right for Kaylee.

Well it's a bit hard to find cheeseburgers in space when you haven't even been paid in awhile. Only so much protein to go around.

Eliza and Amy are plenty, thanks.
Dearest bix, I wouldn't want that. We need you in the room:)
That wasn't meant to usurp your sovereignty, or even spoken so much to you, bix (weren't other people talking, too?). What I mean is that familiar faces could add to the "can't wake from the nightmare" feeling that I've gathered the show may intend. I'm all for new people, too, though. Speaking of, did y'all see Enver Gjokaj on Law and Order: Criminal Intent?
While I love seeing Whedonverse actors in anything, I would rather see new and just-as-awesome actors in Dollhouse that we can then add to our list of Whedonverse actors we'd see in anything. ;)
Yes, I get that your "you" was a plural you, and not a singular you referring to me. Hence the little winking thing after my comment. ;)

Look, there it is again!
Man bix, didja take your pissy pill today?
The "weren't other people talking too?" doesn't get called being pissy at me, but me making it clear that I was joking gets called pissy?

Ooooookay.

Moving on to some saner location for awhile.
Wow, Willowy! Uncalled for.
What we need is Nathan Fillion to be our moderator for the day! Or Nick Brendon.
Why not both? Unless he's worried about loosing his other eye...
Well, it would prey on your mind a bit, what with not having a "spare".
Nick Brendon could reprise the role of Xander in a remake of "A Christmas Story"?

Thanks, I'm here all week.

(Oh, and count me in as one who appreciated Jewel's extra weight for Firefly, but thought it perfectly realistic and appropriate for her character to have lost it by the time of the BDM. Stress and irregular wages will do that.)
Wait, this was Whedonesque I checked in this morning, right?

Hi, gossi!
Esunaga.

That's enough bickering. If you do have problems with other posters, take it to email. Don't use this place as a playground.

Must admit, Kaylee didn't ever really seem overweight to me and I can never remember watching and thinking "Phew, finally they've got someone normal on a show" probably partly because they all looked pretty "normal" (or maybe because we tend to have fewer "super-model" actors on UK TV).

Also (and i'm genuinely not starting a row or anything, just making an observation ;) isn't it strange how we see forcing yourself to lose weight to fit expectations as a bad thing but forced weight gain is OK, even worthy of celebration ?

ETA: Actually, maybe not really. I guess it's purely to do with the aspirations it's giving people when they see the character, regardless of how she got to that weight. I.e. Kaylee's weight is achievable for most of us even without "forced" weight gain ;).

I still heart her. Jewel's just a sweet genuine person. It's been great watching her grown up before our eyes.

I want Jewel short listed for a guest spot in a future Horrible endeavor. She's a professional singer, right? The Horrible team needs to find a hole in her schedule.
I too am surprised when people talk about how she gained weight for Firefly to look different. She did? I still thought she looked slimmer than most real people.

Anyway, more tied up Jewel is clearly the way to better ratings for Stargate Atlantis. Unless the haters (the ones who hate her because she took over for the previous doctor who they liked and we all know that its really all Jewel Staites fault that he was fired it was a plan she hatched over months and so she is evil evil evil and whine a lot and must be kicked out did we mention she whines a lot) wear the producers down.
She was of an average (in Hollywood-land) weight size for Firefly, perfectly healthy looking. She didn't get excessively round for the role or anything. She did mention on her blog once or twice that she made the effort at Joss' request to gain some weight for the role (stuffing her face with donuts and whatnot), but that she felt better when she was able to go back to her usual self (how she looks in Serenity). I see a lot of fans get nostalgic for the way Kaylee looked on Firefly, but a lot of them seem to either not know how she attained that look or forget it or ignore it...if they kept it in mind, I wonder if they'd pine for that look on Kaylee as much, knowing that the actor was putting aside her health somewhat (I know what Jewel did was nothing compared to the lengths some have gone in bulking up or slimming down for a role--like Christian Bale in The Machinist, yikes).

She's noticably movie star fit for Serenity, but I don't think it changed her look that much. She's still as round-faced and cute as ever. She looked good in both the TV series and the movie, IMO.

I don't discuss an actor's weight to make a point about looks usually, but a lot of times when Jewel and her career are discussed this comes up and it bothers a little that some seem to have the impression that Jewel had to make Kaylee "sexier" for the movie (who knows, that might've been a requirement if she was still Kaylee-sized by the time filming started, but regardless, Jewel maintains that it was healthier and felt better to just be her normal size for the film).
Aw, hell. I was trying to work a reference in to Enver Gjokaj's appearance on a much seen show. But I never had a link to post it too, and there may still be none. I'm too tired to look now. Let it suffice for now that he's not just a pretty face - very actor-y. And good at the tragic, which should come in handy after he's playing heartbreak, ruin, and death with his Whedon-written character...which may well never experience those things. Because that's all been blown out of proportion.
