Joss takes pleasure (again, not naughty).
Just a list containing happies.
Hi guys. I was talking today to Patton Oswalt, which already makes me cool, but he said something that struck me: He said if he’s snarky as hell, everybody feels him, but if he talks honestly about things he truly loves, he’ll get flamed right off the net. Which makes a twisted sense: for what do haters hate more than love? Since I am burnt from work, I’ve decided to light a flame of my own by listing, in absolutely no order of importance, a few things that jazz me right now. Haters, start your search engines.
1) Patton Oswalt is on my f%#&ing show! I wrote a part with him in mind and now he speaketh it! Credit goes to Marti Noxon, who sent me the album with him meeting George Lucas in it, for getting him stuck in my head. And he’s rockin’ the drama. Patton. I call him that.
2) TERMINATOR gets a full season. It’s not just Summer – it’s not NOT Summer, but… this is my favorite drama on Tele-vee. Opinions are mixed, but I think they balance the human drama with the homage to my seminal cheesy eighties movie mythology with Battlestaresque panache. (On a similar note, yay to the two-season pick-up for DEXTER. Ms. Benz is among my very favorite actresses -- to work with or watch.)
3) STRIKE TV goes up. This was started by a bunch of people who talked about creating web content outside the studio system, and unlike most people, they followed through. For a time I had planned to house Dr. Horrible there, until it morphed into a separate entity, but these peeps are getting it done, and you all should check the site out. The internet is still prairie, and the cattlemen have yet to throw up their fences. Support your local farmer! (All shows on Strike TV are organically written.)
4) APOCALYPSE HOW, by Rob Kutner. This book was either much funnier or much less funny eight years ago, depending on whether “It’s funny because it’s true” applies to “The human race is doomed”. But it’s my kind of (hilariously) bleak.
5) Obama. Seriously. I know this isn’t a political forum, but this isn’t a political issue. This is an issue of making Rob Kutner’s book not come true.
6) DRUNK HISTORY part one, with Michael Cera. It’s on Funny or die, and it’s funny very much in part because it’s true.
7) HANDS HELD HIGH, off Minutes to Midnight by Linkin Park. I’m about two years behind on this one, but I’m not wrong. And it’s (sadly) not dated. Crazy power.
8) THE OFFICE. Is that show actually getting even better? What up?
9) Truffles. Food of the Gods. They’re just hypnotic. Not chocolate – the real ones.
10) HARD DAY'S NIGHT. Wow, does that movie a) invent the music video, the (watchable) reality show, modern media irony and a whole lot more and b) show that John Lennon was a ROCK STAR, and was, even in the innocent froth of early bubble-gum success, already John Lennon. Ridiculous.
Ten seems like a good number. None was probably a wiser one, but the gauntlet has been thrown, and now we can’t find the gauntlet. It’s probably in the hedges. Bye-ee! -joss.

11) The lovely and talented Man in Red: Santa Claus. It won't work, bub. He knows when you've been good or bad.
I'm all lovin' on most of the list, especially Patton, who not only kicked some serious comedy ass at Marti & Company's WriteAid this year, fundraising for folks affected by the WGA strike, but beautifully moderated the Mystery Science Theatre panel at ComicCon this year, smoothly holding together the occasionally-contentious former Best Brains colleagues... I'm so glad he'll be on Dollhouse. He's a Big Bowl of Talent & Funny.
Oh, yeah, and President-To-Be Obama, who I am starting to (tentatively) believe will make it and matter - for once in my loooong voting life, I am not voting for either a divisive third party candidate or the lesser of two evils. Yay!
And I think chocolate is as real as it gets - maybe even realer than the most real thing you ever (thought you) saw.
(It *is* nifty to hear from Joss again - and twice. I missed his dulcet typing.)

And The Office does indeed keep improving—the auction last week? “100 dollars!” “100 dollars AND ONE PENNY!” “200!” “200 dollars AND ONE PENNY!” Oh so great.
Speaking of Patton, how about the movie, and George C. Scott’s performance? (No, I know not that Patton, but still—George C. Scott! Amazing! And Karl Malden is great too.)

I am happy "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" has been picked up for a full season.
Based on this week's episode alone, I would be in favor of an all-"Dexter" channel. The show Stonehenges.
Patton Oswalt is great.
Truffles scare me, but I am glad they make Joss Whedon happy when he thinks about them in the middle of the night.

And look! (regardez!) - two of our threads tie up together. The Drunk in this episode - Mark Gagliardi, who is funny, whether he was drunk or not - has also appeared in the "Thrilling Adventure and Supernatural Suspense Hour" - as have Tom Lenk and Danny Strong. Now I absi-tutely have to go watch a show.
Forgot to mention StrikeTV - I joined the beta site some weeks ago, but got all behind in checking it out. Must go rectify that toot damn sweet.

YAY! Obama! Yay Terminator! Yay...umm...ok, that's all I know from his list. But...Yay Joss for making his list, and checking it thrice. That was wise. See what I did there?
Things that make me happy, in no particular order or importance:
Meeting Tony Head & giving him the custom model horse I'd painted to look like his horse, Otto, and then later getting his partner's book, "Know Your Horse Inside Out," and having a personal message inside from Tony re: Otto (Ok, this one's really tops)
Friends who supplied me with all seven seasons of "Buffy" on DVD
Finally having all available Christophe Beck tracks, so I have something inspirtational to listen to while writing
Belonging to a couple online communities where VIPs chat w/the common folk
Being featured, twice, in a hobby magazine (Once was by winning a photo contest they held.)
Motown, British Invasion, Mamas & Papas, Simon & Garfunkel...just about anything oldies, except "bubblegum music." Bob said it best - "Today's music ain't got the same soul/I like that old-time rock & roll."
Pliny Don't feel bad - I kept running into Tony that weekend (Even rode in the elevator, alone, with him) and I actually said to him "I'm not stalking you, I swear!" He was amused. His PA...was not. (Then again, she didn't have much of a sense of humor - she actually said to him "Let me know if you want me to run interference" and then looked at me. We were waiting for the elevator, and I was keeping a respectful distance.)

I will never again have an opportunity to meet anyone famous, and even if I did I'm not the type of fan who "has to" be constantly near them, seeking attention. 3. Obernewtyn Chronicals by Isobelle Carmody - No matter how bloody ginormous the next book gets, it's still never long enough. I just love me some post apocalyptic story with a strong female lead ;) Ack! Only one more book to go.
4. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, I'm in love with the writing style, the characters and the whole shebang. It's about a young girl in Germany during WWII, and it is narrated by Death.
5. Mango and avocado salsa. I'm completely addicted to it. Yay for the return of summer fruits!

Unfortunately, I mostly like and agree with all those things. Maybe not Linkin Park, though, although I haven't heard that particular song.
Yes, there's a lot of good news in the air to be had with the bad these days. Michael Cera is great. I'm trying to remember the name of those other internet shorts that he did. Mike and... someone? A guy I know that I went to film school with directed an episode of it. Upon watching it, I was simultaneously really excited and filled with self-loathing about my own creative output.
Edit: Oh yeah! Clark and Michael.

Admiral Ackbar says, "It's a trap !". Yep, I bet it's all part of the Purple Purveyor of Primo Posts' nefarious plan to separate the 'The Core' loving Wheat from the 'The Day the Earth Stood Still is not fascistic' chaff - he's a crafty one that Joss.
Personally, though I have varying amounts of love (from "don't know it" through "don't remember it" to 'pass more Kool-aid') for his options i'm very happy that Joss likes the number 10. OK, some of his choices are prime numbered and we all know just how fundamentally evil those are but the love of 10 redeems all.

Has managed to pinpoint perfectly why I'm still watching the show. Thanks, I was trying to figure it out.
It's so funny that you both posted that. I can't even tell you how many times I've had conversations with friends about how much trouble I have walking away from shows. It's like a sickness. I'm telling you, I need help.
Embarrassed to admit, I have no idea who Patton Oswalt is. Now I must find out.
Shey, I highly recommend his special No Reason to Complain that someone mentioned above and his cds Feeling Kinda Patton and Werewolves and Lollipops.
I can't get it to load right now but he does have a myspace page where he blogs a lot. He was streaming Werewolves and Lollipops there as well. Also you can find his official site, pattonoswalt.com, here.

Wow this is a Joss overload...and a heart overload as well, though you bet as soon as I post this I'm going to try it out for myself.
Hands Held High is among my favorite of this century songs. It is in my opinion the best on that particular Linkin Park album. The difference in tone as the song changes gets me every time as well as the ever stated, "When the rich wage war it's the poor who die."
Dexter is a great show. Terminator is getting there. I think when they went into Cameron's background they started really being something other than a Fox action show. Then again that may just be the Summer Glau love I have.
Living in a Red state I appreciate some blue loving. Each have their flaws, but Obama, again in my opinion, is the right man for the job right now.
I'm hating on you Joss only because you give me some many things to check out, when I have little time enough to read these massive threads!
Otherwise: Truffles? Non-chocolate? Surely you jest sir.

There was one clip where the interviewer complimented him on his rugged complexion. He, in lovely Liverpudlian accent, replied, "It's scabs."
I don't know quite why that makes me giggle every time I think of it, but it does.

And can The Office really get any better right now? The answer is yes but only if Joss directs another episode. *wink* *wink* *nudge* *nudge*
No real offenses meant but I'm tired of hearing "Obama this and Obama that." Of course, on the other side of the fence I'm tired of "McCain that and McCain this." It's probably just all the talk and how I wish we could just man up and end it already but no, a few more days of hooplah. Let's just hope that whoever wins they do something right. We can hope right, hope for some change. Just so long as Sarah Palin doesn't get any short of real authority and cause me to go all fetus-y, crying for my mother, or someone maternal.

(Octothorpe is one of the many names for the "#", the pound or number character; its chief advantage is that most of those other names have another character that they reference, too.)

I just had a lovely hot bath.
I'm listening to a Rachmaninov piano concerto and wondering whether Darla would approve. I think she would.
I had yorkshire puddings with my dinner.
After Eights are wonderful.
Planning a holiday with a friend.
My enjoyable tv of the week: Gossip Girl, and Outrageous Fortune. I'm taking a break from the heavy stuff...
And oh yes, I'd agree with bix about the xkcd strip.
I am luxuriating in life this evening. It's good.

As for getting tired of the election, The Xan Man, I can imagine. It has been two years, by now. I, on the other hand, am sorry it's almost over. I'm a sucker for American politics. It's all (rather serious) entertainment to me, helped by the fact that I, as a citizen of the Netherlands, can't vote. I love the passion I see in the American people around election time. People who drag themselves to rallies, who have passionate debates about the people they're voting for. People just seem to really live and feel politics in the US, which contrasts greatly with our domestic political rumblings which are (nearly) never experiences that seem very close to the hearts of people. But while in some ways that's a blessing (we're not 'a country devided' as you guys sometimes seem), it's also a shame in others.
One of the other reasons I'm interested is that, obviously, the next president of the United States will influence all of our lives outside of the US as well. That, and: there's no greater show on the road, honestly and the current election cycle has been crazy - with unexpected twists and turns, great speeches, nice controversies and (unlike people here in Europe sometimes seem to think) a lot of actual talk about the issues. Like - I think - 95% of my countrymen, I myself am rooting for Obama, just like our big purple "leader" (<- in the 'no actual literal power over us' sense of the word ;)). He'd be a shoe-in here in Europe (and according to recent newsstories I saw, in the nearly all the rest of the world as well). I'd be very happy if our current political figureheads were half as charismatic, well-spoken, intelligent and, above all, inspiring, as Obama is to a lot of Americans (and a lot of us outside of America). That's not to say I don't like McCain (I actually did quite a bit on a few issues, before this election and even in disagreeing with the man, he'd still be likeable), but I prefer - as always, actually - the Democratic candidate. I'll be staying up next tuesday and awaiting the results anxiously. (Actually, I'll be at a big election party in Amsterdam with live music, debate, reflection, results, etcetera being mostly busy with staying awake most of the time, probably :)).

Yeah, it's like a plague ;).
I can see being tired of it after 18 months or whatever, that's one very long campaign. I view it as entertainment in some ways I guess, just because it's easier to stay distant from the issues - the rest of the time i'm shitting my pants over the outcome cos, y'know, the world ain't that big ;).

Not that I'm being hatey - only admire-y for your dazzling palette. ;>
BTW, did it turn out I was was falsely accuséd of Tag Abuse? Or did someone (or something) Orange correct my allegéd mis-step? Must I join Tag-Enders for support and a 12-Step?
QuoterGal | October 30, 00:22 CET
Also, Obama? This is the first time I've been able to vote, and I am a very large Obama supporter. He'll be getting my vote, not Mr. Maverick and the Hockey Mom (sounds like a sitcom, only far more dangerous).
Oh, and did I hear something about Patton Oswalt being on Dollhouse? If so, that is certainly the best news I have heard in quite some time.
UnpluggedCrazy | October 30, 00:32 CET
Oh well, it balances out. Mad Men just ended so I get that hour back.
Before I forget: There are few things to add to the list of Beatles' firsts:
First rock band to perform in a sports arena.
First... anyone... on a worldwide satellite broadcast (performing, you guessed it, All You Need is Love)
First band to create short form films of their songs (ie. "videos")
First artists to openly snub a world leader in front of his own people (President Marcos of the Phillipines).
There are others, I'm certain. One of my favorite pieces ever written about the Beatles is the first few paragraphs of their entry at www.allmusic.com.
Amazing! We owe them everything.

Joss Whedon; he is young, strong, and will be writing amazing stories for years to come. Yeah!
My new truck, It's hecka lotta fun.
Halloween weekend coming up, lots of lovely candy lying around.
you folks on Whedonesque make me laugh out loud almost daily.
I have been balking on watching Dexter because the lead character is a serial killer, and that's the good guy!?! My daughter says It's good, and Joss says It's good so I guess I will have to try it.
Gossi, one of my favorite romantic memories in my life, is of standing out in the rain, kissing my boyfriend, that was many years ago, but still a highlight. Your girl will be lucky.
There are so many things to be grateful for thank you Joss, for making me really think about them tonight.

1. XKCD. The smartest, funniest stick figures the web has to offer.
2. Bag-pipes. You know they're awesome.
3. Simon Pegg/Nick Frost/Edgar Wright. The main actors and director of Spaced, Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz for those of you who live and/or spend most of your free time under rocks.
4. Y: The Last Man. Yeah, I know it was in the other guy's list but I read it over the summer. I should have done so a long, long time ago.
5. Tahmoh Penikett. Honestly, who doesn't have a huge man-crush on him? ... Just the females I guess, they have women-crushes.
6. New Watchmen Footage. OMG OMG OMG *swoon
7. Biden. He's cool too. I'm looking forwards to the next four years.
8. Sandals. What? They're comfortable; at least mine are.
9. Rock Band II. It rocks... band-like
10. Shakespeare. He wrote things.
11. Nerds. The candy... ok the people too.
