Firefly out on Blu-ray this week. Was there any major effort made to publicise this release?

Want to know how long I owned my HD-DVD player before Blu-ray won the format war? Three days. I couldn't have just waited another three days.
I'm waiting for mine to ship.
I think Obama mentioned it in his victory speech, which was pretty awesome.
I am presuming they had little to no advertising budget for the thing.

Brian, he was wearing a Blue Sun tshirt under his suit, also.
Well he couldn't have got his info from the FoxHome.com website*. There's bugger all mention of it there. No Buffy either which is odd considering the fortune 20th Century Fox must have made from it. Angel though does get a look in.

*R.I.P. old official Firefly DVD site.
Yeah, it was at the very beginning: "If there is anyone out there who still doubts that the 'verse is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of the Independents, tonight is your answer -- Firefly is out on Blu-ray."
How long until the Firefly cast reunion thing ends up on Youtube? I've got HD-DVD, and now can't afford Blu-Ray due to some economic troubles you may have heard about on the back pages of the papers.

dollrific, when McCain referenced Firefly he got boo'ed by his supporters. :(
I've seen neither hide nor hair mention of this anywhere, and I go lots of places. Of course there was that stellar mention in Obama's victory speech, true. That was pretty shiny.

I'd love to see Firefly on Blu-Ray. Oh wait, I don't have a blu-ray player. Damn these economic times. I'd also like to see Buffy and Angel out on blu-ray. Any movement on that score?
They're the Alliance!
The Persephone travel agency thing was the only thing that I saw. The less I say on the topic the better.

Except there is this which is pretty damn shiny!

Having actually seen Serenity an unprecedented three times in the theater, I must admit some curiosity to see what this edition would look like on the reasonably large screen in my living room. Still, given the history of technology I'm just cynical enough to hurry up and wait to see what happens next.

Also, I believe Ron Paul made numerous references to "damn purplebellies".
It's a shame that fox doesn't usually release its Blu-ray discs region free (ah, if only, HD-DVD). Anyone know if/when there's a region B (UK) version coming out?
TamaraC, that was awesome. =)
(But to the folks at browncoat.com, Blu-ray is neither "Blue" nor "DVD"! Sorry, the techie in me couldn't let that one go...)

damaged justice, this is actually the Firely Blu-ray, not the Serenity one which comes out in another couple of months.
According to early reports, the set is region A/B.....so just about region free.
Thanks pat32082, that's great news! I'll keep an eye out for some first-hand confirmation.

Getting a PS3 soonish! Wooooo. Firefly in HD, so shiny.

Edit: Here's confirmation for any other UK/Region B people out there.

Love the clip. What a shock though, Ron Glass can't stop laughing! I've heard that guy is usually so pensive. ;P
Love that clip! Think my kid might be getting that PS3 for Christmas after all.
For $70, I think I'm saving my money for the Serenity BR...more chance of the studio noticing increased revenue and interest in the series...FOX just wants our money and they will continue to cancel great shows
lax01, the executive who greenlit Serenity at Universal doesn't work there anymore. There is zero chance that Uni will greenlight a sequel. And you do realize that Fox (the network) and 20th Century Fox (the studio and home entertainment) operate as separate companies. Right?
DeepDiscount.com's price is $57.85, but if you wait until Tuesday then you can apply a 20% coupon code -- freely available, not a secret -- such as DVDTALK or USATODAY or NYTIMES or SUPERSALE or PRICESEARCH and the price will drop to $46.28. That is ASSUMING that today's price will hold through Tuesday, which it MIGHT not since today's price is the pre-order price, and then come tomorrow (Tuesday), then the price may be the non-pre-order price... Look, if this is confusing, all you need to know is: Wait until the morning of Tuesday November 11 (DON'T try this right after midnight, WAIT for morning!!!!) and then put it in your cart and then try one of those coupon codes, and it just might be affordable!

"Was there any major effort made to publicise this release?"

I called my dad, does that count?

Yes. Yes it does. :-)

I'm buying Firefly Blu-Ray Tuesday and I don't have a Blu-Ray player YET. Whoo-hoo! Browncoat with plasticy money!

Uh, I'm pretty sure the question meant did FOX do anything.
It sounded really funny in my head.
@willbueche: DeepDiscount.com increased their coupon codes to 25% this time, which brings the price down to $43.39. :-)
Still lovin' that clip (and can't wait to see the rest!). Obviously Nathan is a hilarious improv, but Joss still has the best lines. "10 syllables!..." "And... total lack of scene."

Thanks for the deepdiscount tips. I was gonna wait for the price to come down, the coupon might let me do it tomorrow!

My bad. Oh, this is bad. Because I'm tempted to get it just for "Objects In Space".
I'd say there was definitely NOT any major effort to publicize this because I didn't even know it was out until this week. In fact, I browsed the Target weekly circular on Sunday and totally didn't notice this on the page...I think if it wasn't Firefly, I wouldn't be buying it on Blu-Ray. Blu-Ray is still extremely expensive, and we're only buying things we really like on hi-def...we don't have a hi-def TV yet, but we're thinking ahead.
Whoo-hoo! Target circular! I was worried it was only going to be at Best Buy!
Remember if you have a PS3 - you have a HandsofBlueRay player.
Target.com has the circular advertised on the left side of the main page. If you click on it and flip to the DVD section, it's a whopping $67.99 or $69.99 (I can't remember which one) and I'm not sure why, but it also says in small print that the DVD isn't offered online, only through stores. Odd, isn't it?
Firefly BluRay listed on IMDB's New Releases Box Sets page.

It is far enough down that it doesn't make their list on the front page, unfortunately. But at least it's there!

We're holding off on buying the larger sets of BluRay right now. But I guess it's something I can add to my want list for Christmas time. I'd love to see some of the episodes in hi-def...
Anony1, I'm buying it too and I don't have my Blu-ray player either!

Simon, it is a real shame about the old official site. And what is up with the bugger all on Fox's page (hard to navigate through that mess, too)? They make it but don't want to sell it? (Ooh, Sand Pebbles.) Maybe they're counting on Amazon. The DVD set is still at #245 after all these gorramn years.
It's region B? Yes! Now I'll definitely be getting it. I was worried about having to wait ages before a release in Europe.
'Want to know how long I owned my HD-DVD player before Blu-ray won the format war? Three days. I couldn't have just waited another three days.'

You really didn't see that coming? Blu-ray had beaten HD-DVD in disc sales every single week for over a year at that point, plus the fact that Toshiba was giving up the format had been leaked as a rumour several days previous. But then, I go on www.highdefdigest.com daily, so it's perfectly understandable that you wouldn't have known and I would. My condolences.

As an Aussie, I'm glad that the set is able to be played on my Region B PS3 - according to EzyDVD, an Australian Firefly Blu-ray will be out in December for AU$79.95, but I'd prefer to get whatever version doesn't have the garish Oz ratings sticker on it. This is Firefly, after all.
If I ever get a Blu-Ray player (which will probably happen, just not anytime soon), then I will definitely get this. Until then...:(
What is interesting is that this is the first major 'Verse release where there has been no grassroots campaign to get fans to purchase it i.e. "buy this product cause it'll show the suits that fans still want more".

FOX needs to make more money ;) No-one cares about giving away near-source quality material of some dead show...
I grabbed the last copy from the closest Best Buy to my house. That was a nice feeling. Also, I really like the new menus.

I eschewed numbers and went with a more technical approach of observing which format had a bigger/nicer display in Blockbuster, Best Buy, etc, and at the places I was visiting, HD-DVD won. :(
lax01, what do you mean?
I got an HD player when they went down to $100 + five movies last Thanksgiving.... I have a healthy collection of HD DVD's and love them... I picked up a Blu-Ray player last Chrismas for just about $200... I still think that my HD player works better... oh well... I'm looking forward to getting Firefly on Blu-Ray, and Serenity next month...
I have a contest to win a copy for those interested...

Contest - Take Solace in the Blu Skies.

I don't have a Blu-Ray player yet, but I'm planning to get the set asap, because I'm afraid it'll become hard to get later on, and I don't want to miss out.
Simon,

So telling people that Firefly Blu-Ray has been released doesn't count as a grassroots campaign.
Anonymous1, the point was that every other time some repackaging or repurposing has come out there was a bunch of crowing (even in the face of ample evidence to the contrary) about how the new sales could get us new Firefly made. This time around, pretty much not a peep.
Hey Brian, I think Obama may have mentioned goats in his speech as well. He's so brilliant that he can fit anything in and it still makes sense!
Obviously, there's no Firefly Blueray push because Joss is fighting a different battle right now and needs our help in a different way.

Well now you've ruined everything.
Once again, WTF? Why is everyone talking in code all the sudden?
Because the sparrows are flying again.
