Joss to receive Cultural Humanism Award from Harvard. He'll be getting the "2009 Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Award in Cultural Humanism". The ceremony will take place on April 10th, Joss will give a short speech beforehand and then there's going to be a Q&A afterwards. The event will be open to the public.

Anyone here a student or staff member at Harvard?

Gratz ! Seems like quite a recognition to me :)
Joss is often misunderstood.
Would someone smart please add "cultural humanism" into Wikipedia?
I'm an alum... not sure that allows me to attend, but I'll certainly try. :-)
I forgot people could actually graduate from the place. Be nice if alums could go.
Didn't realise Joss was an "official" humanist, just thought he was a non-specific atheist. Cool.

...beforehand and then there's going to be a Q&A afterwards.

"Joss, as a humanist, what's your opinion on whether there'll be a 'Serenity 2' ?"

I'm going to be in Boston that day! Surely I can find someone to get my sister and I in!
Hey all,

I'm a Harvard student on the committee that selected Joss (can you guess who nominated him? ;) )

The scoop is that the event is open to the public, so please come! Joss will be speaking, answering questions, and signing.

We're also trying to think of good humanist clips of his to start the event off with, if anyone has any suggestions.

I'm a fan of "I ain't looking for help from on high. That's a long wait for a train that don't come." -Mal//"When I talk about belief, why do you always assume I'm talking about God?" -Shepard Book, but there's lots of others.
I like
Webs: Oh, well, you know, not my God, because I defy him and all of his works. Does he exist? Is there word on that, by the way?
Buffy: Nothing solid. ...

from "Conversations with Dead People". Makes me smile ;).
Do we know when the tickets are going on sale?
Good work Amaranth!

There's always, "If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do."
I've been on hold for the box office for about 10 minutes. If I get through and can find out when sales start, I'll post.
Hey guys,

We haven't started selling tickets yet, but I'll comment here when we do. You can also buy tickets at the door.

Update to say: tickets should go on sale sometime in the middle of next week (and then you can buy them through the box office).

Harvard box office has "no information about that event" and suggested that I call back in a week.
a lifetime achievement award for someone probably still not even at the peak of his abilities?
Amaranth, what is the seating capacity of Memorial Church? I'm worried that if I wait to buy them at the door it might be sold out.
Wow, I could actually go to that, I think! :D
Amaranth, do you know about how long the event will last?
Yay Joss! He's going to have a lot of people to congratulate him.

The capacity of Memorial Church, is, I think, 500 seats plus extra standing room. The event is probably going to be 1.5 to 2 hours long, plus signing afterward for an hour.
Joss' commentary on the DVD for Objects in Space of Firefly might have some good sound clips for your program Amaranth. Very cool idea. I picked my tag name here because the existential thread in Joss' work is one of the huge pulls for me. I second the motion for the quotes from Angel, posted by jcs above. The website "allthingsphilosophical" a buffy site would have a lot of good leads for a philosophical hunt. Here is the address: http://www.atpobtvs.com/
Amaranth, thanks! My daughter and I will be there. Now all I need to do is figure out a place to park!
Any excuse to come to Boston... :)
Kudos to Joss! He deserves it! Just wish I could go - it sucks living in the UK sometimes!
Hm... still no tickets on sale yet?
