Prostitutes and “Companions” in Ancient Greece ...Inara's forebears on EarthThatWas?

I remember around Christmastime I saw a program on the History Channel called The History of Sex or somesuch, in which a description of Inara-like "companions" in ancient times with high social standing caught my ear. Today I finally decided to look up the info on the Web.
An alternative/addition to the geisha explanation of the Companion phenomenon in the Flyverse.
