April 15 2009

Tonight at PaleyFest09 - the Dollhouse panel. In attendance will be Joss Whedon, Sarah Fain, Elizabeth Craft, Eliza Dushku, Fran Kranz, Dichen Lachman and Miracle Laurie. It should prove to be an interesting evening.

Hopefully we'll get good coverage of this event as it happens.

Isn't Tahmoh suppose to be there?
I think he's supposed to be. Maybe not.

I wonder what they're going to show (Ep 13 perhaps?) before the discussion. Or if they'll be nice and just dive into a 2-hour discussion. :D

YAY! I'll update afterwards.
Aww no Tahmoh?
Oh to be a fly on the wall... Or maybe just a person in the audience. That would work too.
The lineup tweeted earlier today by Paley did not include Tahmoh.
They're screening an episode of DH introed by Joss, apparently.
Is this going to be more like a celebration or a funeral? Or, you know, somewhere in between, like a wake?

As virtuous men pass mildly away,
And whisper to their souls to go,
Whilst some of their sad friends do say,
"Now his breath goes," and some say, "No."

Just about sums up how it is speculating about Dollhouse's prospects.
The expectation, purely speculative, is that it's Haunted. One the one hand, Paley frequently screens the upcoming episode. On the other hand, Haunted isn't merely days away from airing, it's over a week away. So maybe not.
Haunted would be okay to screen in terms of spoilers I suspect, because they couldn't screen 11 or 12 as it would be Way Too Much. Only speculation, haven't got a clue what they will actually do.
Maybe they'll screen Epitaph One. It might help DVD sales. On the other hand, the audience might not want the spoilers. Maybe it's Haunted after all.

Also, maybe Kevin Reilley will make a surprise appearance (maybe jump out of a cake or something) and announce that it's being renewed. Now that would be a successful evening.
Ooh, I am excited about tonight. I'm not there--nowhere near--but still. Excited.

If I'm in LA next year as planned, I'm hitting every single one of these events. Every. Single. One.
I've been wondering about tonight's episode. Could be Haunted, but oh man! If it were Epitaph One?? Awesome rocks!

And yeah, the mood of the event has me worried... but I hope we can rise above and ask some great questions. This may be our last chance.
They could always show us "Echo".

Agreed, Squishy! I say we put it to a vote. Whatever the outcome, FOX must abide.
Too bad Enver isn't there. I love him to bits.
Is this going to be more like a celebration or a funeral? Or, you know, somewhere in between, like a wake?

That might describe tonight's panel, but it also describes the Pushing Daisies episodes that will be shown at the Cinerama Dome on Sunday. Either way, I'll praise them both.
Yeah, Enver's really the Big Find in this show, for me.

Here's hoping we get some good, insightfull questions to clear up all the confusion here about, for instance, the influence FOX had on the process, etcetera.

This is probably going to be a lengthy thread, isn't it? ;)
Should've started by now, right? Is any place updating live, or should I wait?
Wondering the same thing.
@Tabz is live-twittering...

ETA: Apparently they're watching 'Needs,' which, awesome - one of my favorite episodes so far.

Thanks for the link, ladygrey. Too bad it's Needs rather than a new ep, but I guess it makes sense. As if there aren't enough spoilers for upcoming shows in the world already.
@paleyfest is also live twittering. They're pretty thorough.
tweeted by @loquaciousmuse: Joss says still hope for both episode 13 and season 2! Yay!

Yay indeed!
@Tabz said, "13Th and second season are optimic according to joss"

I assume that means he's optimistic about them? Or there's a good chance? Kind of having trouble deciphering that one.

ETA that I like this quote (again, courtesy of @Tabz): "My goal is that there is never such a thing as a typical joss whedon show - joss"

[ edited by Jobo on 2009-04-16 04:21 ]
Woohoo an optimic season 2. Maybe there will be an optometrist in season 2
I had the same trouble with that one, Jobo, but I also came to the conclusion that it was optimistic. Pretty good news.

ETA Let Down's interpretation seems more likely : ).

Well, it seems unlikely that the themes of them would be very optimistic, given what we've seen so far...

And, @loquaciousmuse is tweeting

"# The original first scene of Dollhouse is now in episode 1317 minutes ago
# Episode 13 is "strangest, most awesome thing" - Joss #dollhouse25 minutes ago
# Eliza looks stunning, woah #dollhouse27 minutes ago
# Joss says still hope for both episode 13 and season 2! Yay! #dollhouse"

Also, @paleyfest just started up again.

@paleyfest: Joss Whedon on the fate of the show, "Show is not canceled, they are big fans of the show."
I hope that's true. I mean, I wouldn't expect him to say, "Fox hates the show, it's probably done, just stop watching now." But hopefully if that were the case, he'd just be quiet and avoid the subject rather than be misleading. And if they are such big fans of the show... well, that's a good thing. You know, in case anyone needed that one explained for them.
I'm having a hard time reconciling this with the things Joss has said previously about season 2's chances - even just the other day at the Dr. Horrible panel
Maybe things changed. Maybe FOX talked to him, or maybe he checked in with FOX, and because of the press lately...

I'm having a hard time reconciling this with the things Joss has said previously about season 2's chances - even just the other day at the Dr. Horrible panel

That's my issue too. Under normal circumstances, I wouldn't consider that Joss could be misleading us a bit. But he did just say yesterday that it ain't looking so good. So I dunno what to think.
Maybe Joss gave them a treatment.

...maybe I just realized the parallel between a "treatment" for an active in the Dollhouse and a "treatment" for an actor in Hollywood.
...and a script "treatment?"
Perhaps Joss knew he was making us picnic so he wanted to give us a few more weeks of hope?

Or you know, an explanation that doesn't make him all manipulatively. Its not like before he said it was certainly going to be canceled, and now he's saying its a sure thing. To me, this is consistent with what he said before: possible, but not exactly probable.
I dunno. Tabz used the word optimistic (well, optimic, but you know). I don't know if Joss himself used that word, but if he did, it's pretty different from yesterday's comments.

I'm not saying he's trying to toy with our feelings. But I don't find it unbelievable that he went home yesterday, realized, "Hmm, maybe my going around saying the show's probably dead isn't such a great idea," and came back with a new line. It would be understandable. I'm just trying to figure out which to trust more.
His comments are logically compatible - it's more of a difference in emphasis
I hate it when people make me picnic, so I'm glad we're looking at an optimic ep 13 and season 2.

Seriously, though, I think both can be true. Having the execs like the show doesn't mean that it's safe. It just means it's not canceled. Key word might be "yet," but we just don't know. I think the situation is conditional, that they haven't come to any kind of decision yet.

I really think that they'll probably end up not canceling now, as the show could do what Buffy did and pick up steam as it goes on.

I, too, really have hope for a second season. I would hope that when FOX signed on with Joss, they were smart enough to realize the show might not be in the top 10 but that it was still a worthy investment, and that over time, it would grow in popularity.
At this point,I'm ready to just wait for the upfronts so we'll know one way or the other.
I thought Joss' comment about episode 13 is that we'd get it after a long wait (ie on the DVD), and I thought he just meant that Dollhouse was not yet cancelled (ie Fox didn't want a big downer at the Paley event). So although I'm not picnicking, I'm also not feeling the optimism. I hope there is still hope for a second season (even one that will only last another 13 episodes) but I don't want to get so hopeful that I feel crushed later on when Fox inflicts it's signature sudden but inevitable betrayal.
I don't know how to use twitter (or even really, what it is).. so can people here keep letting me know what's going on?
I think Joss' comments yesterday are a case of him bracing for the worst case scenario. After what he's been through with networks, I don't blame him. A lot of the fans have approached Dollhouse the same way, expecting it to be cancelled so if it is they won't be as disappointed.

I also don't think either statement cancels each other out. He may not be optimistic about the show's chances, but that doesn't mean optimism about the shows chances doesn't exist. He doesn't seem to be ruling out the possibility of a second season. I agree that emphasis is the key, also of issue is the overraction of fans and nit-pick pick picking Joss' every word. ;)
I agree about the overraction and the nit-picking, so I've decided to definitely just be optimistic. If the show isn't picked up, I'll deal with that crushing disappointment then. But for now, I'm just going to enjoy the show, because I'm REALLY liking where it's at right now.
mortimer, I'm sure people will keep updating and talking here, but you don't need to have an account at Twitter (or even really know how to use it) to read the updates as they come. All you have to do is click the links above to the different twitter accounts, and you'll go right to the tweets for that person. And if someone gives a name of a twitterer -- for instance, @theonetruebix -- the format for the url would be as follows: http://twitter.com/theonetruebix. It's simple as pie, and that way you don't need to wait for updates here.

Oh Cool, That was easy... all I had to do was click a link

Thanks Dizzy.
You're welcome, mortimer. :)

And I need context for Joss' optimic. I'll wait to read the reports before I get too optimic myself. Though I must admit, even if it's not all that different from what he's been saying, my hope, she is rising ever so slightly.
Joss Whedon on the fate of the show, "Show is not canceled, they are big fans of the show."

*blinks* whut?
Joss used the word "hope" and seemed surprisingly optimistic. I don't know if something happened since yesterday or if it'll pan out, but there were multiple comments that could be construed as hopeful. Make of it what you will.
I'm with Tessa. What ever happens, I'm not going to worry about it now because it will hinder my enjoyment. I'm trying to be Zen about the whole thing.
Things are happening and Joss is hopeful. Works for me. Panel was great and Miracle is mindblowingly gorgeous in person.
Miracle beeing mindblowingly gorgeous is an understatement. Period.

Love her.
I believe that about Miracle. She's a stunner.
Awesome panel. And good to see everyone in such great spirits.
I'm trying to be Zen about the whole thing.

Me too. And eating fruit.
Well tabz could have meant opticynic, which Urban Dictionary states is 'A person with a relatively positive worldview, who is critical of the motives of others...'

Like, perhaps, questioning the motives of network executives who are acting OVERLY nice.

Still, we've got a Miracle.
And not to mention, a Faith.
Joss fans have done great things for Charity.

So I sure ain't giving up HOPE yet! ;-)
Then again, there's Faith, Hope & Trick

*snickers*
Okay look guys. To me and I was there he said that the studio contacted him and the network and that he personally spoke to the network about showing ep 13 and they told him that they'll take a look.
I have a free tip for them. They don't need to take a look on it, WE do.
Hey everyone! It was nice to meet so many of you at the Paley event last night. Here are two video clips for all of you that couldn't make it. Enjoy.

ETA: Both videos are back up. I used alternate spelling, hoping to escape deletion.

Thanks 10th Crew Member, hopefully i'll get a chance to see those at home. Sounds like a good time, happy for those that could go.

His comments are logically compatible - it's more of a difference in emphasis

Which can depend on something as trivial as blood sugar levels at the time of the comment. Which is why i've consciously stepped off the renewal roller-coaster - I refuse to have my spirits lifted or dropped depending on whether Joss has (or hasn't) just had a Snickers ;).

Wait and see. Nothing is anything until it's something.

I'm trying to be Zen about the whole thing.

Me too. And eating fruit.

Did you see the finale yet jcs ? How good was that ? Maybe slightly deus ex machina but just so very 'Life' (i.e. bathed in light, "We have a word for 1+1 equals 1 ...". Awww ;). Gonna miss it if it's gone but i'm glad it went out well (even with the slightly awkward work-arounds for Sarah Shahi's bump).
Thank you to our far-flung correspondents, and the near-flung!
Apparently I must have one cryptic tweet every live event I am at. :)

Yes, Joss was extremely evenly optimistic (try typing that on a phone). He said that he had been so depressed and down and Fox told him "we haven't decided yet! He said they liked the target demo numbers (if not the overall ratings) and a couple times he's said that they LIKE the show and want to continue it. So it's not a sure thing, but it's not a depressing inevitability either.
Yea, I went yesterday and everyone was pretty optimistic. I mean everyone. Some questions that we're asked were pretty mucha given already. That and I got a picture with Fran/Topher!

That and me and Miracle are Filip friends! (yea, did anyone know where Eliza went last night I mean I looked back and she was gone)

BTW I'm going to post a recap in the next few days so my twitter account is @rheamcgee
