One Man In Black to another. At the risk of sounding corny, I'd like to see the fans of Angel ask for a tribute to Johnny Cash, Whedonesque style. "Just so we're reminded of the ones who are held back, up front there ought 'a be a Man In Black."
Is there some way to institute a fan-based movement to encourage Joss Whedon to acknowledge Johnny Cash in a future episode of Angel? Would there be a large interest in this? What with Angel season five still in production, would it be bad taste for Mutant Enemy to somehow work Johnny Cash's "Man In Black" into an episode of the show this season? Perhaps just as mood music for a scene change, or maybe Lorne could sing a couple bars. Something.
When one reads the lyrics, it seems strangely fitting to Angel's character on so many levels. I'd never thought of it before, but if Angel once rubbed elbows with the Rat Pack, it's not far fetched to believe he shook hands with Mr. Cash as well. In fact, I'd imagine Angel finding them kindred spirits in a way that he'd never feel with someone like Sinatra. I'm not saying make a big deal of it, but just a passing reference. I can't imagine Angel living through the 20th century without discovering the parallels between himself and a man who would sing these words with such passion. I mean might I be the only one in here who hears this song and doesn't think of Angel?
Ah, I'd love to wear a rainbow every day,
And tell the world that everything's OK,
But I'll try to carry off a little darkness on my back,
'Till things are brighter, I'm the Man In Black.
