actually no
the buffy picture is from the season 5 promos - and she was always wearing black
and the dawn shot is from the season 5 promos as well - and she was wearing really dark purple and it's hard to make out with such a small picture but it doesn't look like they changed her colour at all
and also - the buffy picture on the season 4 boxset wasn't changed at all - the original picture had her also wearing black (but the willow shot was altered

Anyways, I have the WB's photography CDs in front of me, and in the original season five photo shoot, Sarah's top is a deep neutral shade of blue (#3E424A) and Michelle's top is a deep shade of blue (#212D47).
Meanwhile, in the original season four photo shoot, Sarah's top is indeed black, while Willow's top is aqua (#87C4E0).

I've always associated Season 5 with a light blue color. I think that has something to do with the portal Buffy jumps into in the end. Red is Season 2 for me. That's probably because the DVD box set is red, and it came out (I think) before or around the time when I started watching Buffy. :)
I also think it's appropriate for Spike to be on the Season 5 cover art.
"I do wonder why the villains don't get any prominence on the boxes..."
Well, the Gentlemen are on the Season 4 cover.
