(SPOILER) IESB Interviews Tony Head about Merlin. (And some Whedon-connected stuff as well (like what happened to Ripper)!

IESB: Do you know if anything will ever come of the Buffy spin-off about Giles that’s been talked about?

Anthony: The last showing that the Buffy spin-off had was that I introduced Joss Whedon to Julie Gardner, who really wants to do something. She happened to be over here publicizing Torchwood, and I was doing Persuasion for PBS. I thought, “Wow, why not put them together?” They got along very well, so it looked like something might happen, whether it be Buffy related or whether it just be me and Joss doing something. But then, he had dinner with Eliza Dushku, and Eliza said that she was sick of playing the same part, and he came up with the idea for Dollhouse, and that was that.

Heehee. Didn't know that.

Brutally honest yet charming. Gotta love Tony. Really hope he and Joss do get together sometime.

Curious about Free Agents, has it aired already? Is it any good? And what is it about?

Ooh. I know this! I knew this...

Free Agents is a comedy about London talent agents (Green Wing's Stephen Mangan and Pulling's Sharon Horgan) attempting to have something resembling a relationship. It could be fairly described as "ribald" rather than actively filthy on the whole, and it's good fun. Mr. Head is cast rather against type as Mangan's monstrously sex-obsessed boss.

Never had the impression that Ripper was supposed to include Faith, but after all maybe the idea was re-used for Season 8, so.. Eliza not wanting to play Faith again (a little strange, considering her love for the character) wouldn't necessarily scrap Ripper, anyway.

I don't think ASH was saying Eliza vetoed the idea of being in Ripper. I think he was just summarizing the reasons for which Joss started doing Dollhouse, which got in the way of any BBC projects.

Does anyone happen to know when the writers will likely get back together for DH, by the way? How far in advance will they start writing for the fall season?

Jobo, I seem to remember a quite recent interview with Joss where he stated that copyright intricacies between 20th Century Fox and the BBC were the reason Ripper became a practical mess and matter of factly fell through, not any actor's unavailability. I don't think Dollhouse starting had an effect on a non-existing project.

I think they're supposed to meet any day now, since typical shooting for a show debuting in the Fall starts in July.

Hm, well based on the fact he did Frank N' Furter pre-BtVS (sex-obsessed), James in Manchild (sex-obsessed), and Max Flash in the pilot of Him and Us, which might have been pretty risque, I'm not so sure it's playing against type. Just a type he doesn't do all the time.

I'm glad for Dollhouse's success, but I sure pine for ASH in Ripper.

Tonya J I'm still miffed w/ABC for not picking up "Him & Us." I'm very glad I downloaded the pilot from a Tony Head site when I could; it's hilarious. But it also has very well thought-out characters who have a reason for being/doing what they are.

Plus Tony wearing that outrageous earring and calling guys "she" is just bonus!

I'm glad he's keeping busy, but, gorramit, I wish he was busy over here!

Aha! So Eliza's to blame. Sounds plausible. Bad Faith takes down Ripper ;) Right now if I had to choose between Ripper or Dollhouse, I think I have to say Dollhouse, but not without a huge pile of angst.

Speaking of Merlin, it inkludes many great actors/ess inkluding our favourite ASH. But boy I tried to watch it but didnt manage more than a few episodes :/

Yeah, at that ASH site, you can no longer download the Him and Us pilot (CURSES!). It's defunct.

Tonya J Bloody shame, that - I want to share it w/friends & family, but it's too large to email, and I lack the technical know-how to try burning it to disc.

Oh well. It's on my computer for any time I get the urge for a little "You slept with the writer?" "Who said anything about sleep?"
