(SPOILER) Highlights from Eliza Dushku's Dollhouse conference call. Finished just there now by all accounts. ETA: There's an excellent recap of the event at FEARNet.

"Although this season will see Echo learning still more about her background as Caroline, she is actually getting further away from her original self. Her personality is becoming distinctly Echo, and some aspects of Caroline’s past aren’t necessarily things Echo wants any part of."

This both interests and thrills me.
And that feeds directly into the conversation some of us were just having (yet again) in the episode discussion thread.
It's hard not to get drawn in (yet again). But yep, also thrilled and interested. My faith wavered a bit after 'Omega' when composite Echo seemed so sure she wasn't the real McCoy, started to wonder if Joss et al really saw it in those terms but seeing Echo proper at the end of 'Vows' actually having a conversation wherein she states aims, talks about herself etc. I wavered back.

(took a chance and that's actually not too spoilery, fairly broad brush. Doubt i'll read the full transcript though)

Has anyone else pointed out BTW that Miles Bennett Dyson helped create Skynet ? Very, very probably but if not ... they have now ;).
I don't believe they have, Saje. Find.
W00t ;). Arnie says it in full in T2.
Gossi, I only came in to the comments section to see if others felt the same way. WOW I'm stoked.
In a soundbite sure to send fanboys into seizures, she added, “Trying to breastfeed someone else’s baby is harder than it looks.”

Personally, this news doesn't get me going, but each to their own.
Yeah.. breastfeeding? Some people have bizarre ideas about what constitutes as sexy. But there’s no judging in the DH ;)

Count me in with all the people loving that quote. I've always preferred Echo to Caroline and was a tad disappointed in Omega when it was all about getting Caroline back in her body. One of the most poignant things about Whiskey's storyline is that she doesn't want to die and admits she's being selfish by holding onto someone else's body. I’ve pretty much seen Echo as an identity from very early on in s1 so I’m ecstatic to here they’re not just going down the ‘It’s all about becoming Caroline again!’ route. This is exactly what I hoped for with Echo and why I found her character so fascinating.
But that brings people back to the question of who it is you are supposed to care for. If Caroline is not in play, and Echo is in process, there is no fixed identity for people to root for.
There is an emerging identity for us to root for.

I am also in the Thrilled and Interested club! Is there a handshake?
Pretty much any hand with money in it will get shaken, it's one of the founding principles of the club.
Count me in on the thrilled-with-emerging-identity Echo. I find this development utterly fascinating. I admit I would have been a bit disappointed if it all came back down to only getting Caroline back and to hell with everything else. (Although in a Joss-show, that didn't seem likely.) I keep getting Illyria/Fred flashbacks watching the Dolls struggle with their identity/ies, although I realize that in many ways that's not a great analogy. Still. There is something so poignant about all these different wiped and constructed and merging identities on Dollhouse. What is real? What is lasting? What changes and what doesn't? Is there a deeper essence or not? All questions we can apply to ourselves and to human identity in general. Awesome stuff.
I am also in the thrilled with Echo's emerging identity category, especially since I've had no problem connecting with her from the beginning. Finding out who Echo might be, apart from Caroline, is a big part of what I'm looking forward to.

Slightly off-topic, I believe birthday wishes should be showered on Saje today. ;) Thanks for all your insightful, pithy and downright funny comments. May you (and therefore we) have many more to come.
Wow, thanks samatwitch, good memory. Yep, today is my annual reminder of entropy, the inevitability of decline and the terrifying reality of mortal existence. There's cake though so, y'know, yay ;-).
Ha ha, samatwitch knows EVERYBODY'S birthday, it's one of her superpowers! Yay cake, yay entropy, decline and terrifying reality! Gimme a piece of all that. Happy Birthday Saje!

And, slightly off-topic ;), very excited also to hear that Echo will be Echo and not just Blank-Caroline.
Ta ;). And yep, the Echo stuff really is cool, between that and still not being dead it's turning into a pretty good week. As I say I started to doubt the direction, wondered if maybe Joss was making The Point so hard that Echo was going to get lost in the mix. Should've known better. I am a bad acolyte and may have to burn some offerings or something.
Stick to incense--that ritual sacrifice with cake thing never works out well. [Hope you had a great birthday!]

And samatwitch, you are amazing. Not sure how remembering birthdays would do up against leaping tall buildings or sticking to walls, but it's very cool nonetheless.

And, uh, Go Echo!
catherine: Ha ha, samatwitch knows EVERYBODY'S birthday, it's one of her superpowers!

She's as dependable as the dawn, or maybe tax-time - though she's a lot more fun than tax-time ; >

Happy (Belated, I guess, by now) Birthday, Saje - I spoke with Ben & Jerry and had them make a special flavor in your honor.

It has the dependably-satisfying flavor of chocolate, studded with the rich complexity of hazelnut cookies and topped off with a piquant dash of Scottish shortbread chunks.
Yum! Sprinkle some physics on top?

Not sure how remembering birthdays would do up against leaping tall buildings or sticking to walls

Well, it's only one of her superpowers. She may well be able to do that other stuff too. Secretly though, one would imagine. Under cover of night and such.
Y'know, how often would you really use "leap tall buildings" ? Whereas remembering folk's birthdays is a super-power that'd come in handy throughout the year.

Well, you were pretty close in your time-zone, thanks QG ;). That actually sounds like a decent ice-cream too, yum indeed.
