Buffy movie without Joss? - "A very big mistake" says Alyson Hannigan. She tells CinemaBlend that she wouldn't appear in it even for a cameo role.

She is not kidding. Again, if you want to make a Buffy "remake", don't call the new Slayer Buffy...but you can throw in Luke Perry and Kristy Swanson as the new Slayer's mom and dad. That's a good idea.
Thank you Aly!!!! The more people speak out about this, maybe we can stop this from happening.
Why are people still talking about this... its not going to happen... (clearly de'nial runs deep)

::crosses fingers and prays to the powers that be that the Kuszis will have some goram sense smacked into their brains that this is a very bad idea::
As far as I understand the original producers have the right to remake the original movie, or make a sequel, but all the characters that were created for the TV series, including Willow, are owned by Fox and off limits. So if they do manage to make a movie it would be Buffy, Pike, Merrick etc. I don't think they could even use Summers as Buffy's surname was never mentioned in the movie.
So "Willow" would never be in the movie even if Ms Hannigan was.
“I mean if Joss isn't involved, it's only the title."

Aly is so right and awesome! You gotta love her!
I don't get it. Why don't they just go to Joss and say "hey, we'd like to make some money, and we know you could produce a kick-ass Buffy movie. It's a win-win. What do ya say?"

Instead, they're being stubborn, deciding to do it themselves and cut Joss out. This makes no sense at all. Yes, paying Joss and the TV series actors would cost more, but you'd also get the huge fan base forking over the cash.

Bad reboot idea indeed.
I swear a small part of my soul dies every time this is mentioned. :( Good on Aly for speaking her mind. <3
If the Kuzuis have no rights on show-specific things, why were they credited on Angel? Or am I missing a movie-connection here?
"That's just silly to me" pretty much covers it.

Thanks Aly, you rock, you always do.
I really, really miss Buffy--have been watching episodes almost every night this week--and I would "give my right arm" to see a Buffy movie. Without Sarah, David, James, Allyson and Nicky, however, I have no interest. And without Joss??? They have to be insane!
wiesengrund, this might just be me being idiotic, but surely its to do with Buffy's appearance and her name being used throughout?

As for Aly, it's always wonderful for her to talk about Buffy and Joss. I never really hear her doing interviews so that makes this all the more wonderful.
Why are they even doing this? I mean, I'm not against the idea of remakes all together, but come on., The show's not that @#$%ing old! Wouldn't it make more sense to remake an older show at least. Say, Dark Shadows? (Hey, I loved that show, but it does look ridiculously dated now)

And they big question is, who in their right mind would even want to direct this? It would have to be someone that had absolutley no problem with destroying a loved series, and wouldn't care one bit about flipping the bird to the show creators, and fans, maybe even taking pleasure in doing so.

I mean what kind of person would even........oh no. Oh God! I know who's going to do it! The new Buffy is going to be directed by Rob Zombie!
NNNNNOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
Aly is so right on.I think the idea of a Buffy reboot is horrible. You want Buffy, you do the real thing with Joss and and the characters and cast we love.

This isn't like Star Trek or Batman where a reboot was necessary.

wiesengrund Jayme : Well, both shows were spin-offs from the movie, in a way, so anyone responsible for the movie was entitled to a credit. Like Danny Thomas being in the credits for Gomer Pyle USMC even tho he had nothing to do with the production and only a tiny cut of the profits.

And I still thiunk the Kuzuis are either just bluffing for some business reason, or if they're serious I don't know how successful they'll be getting backing.
I still hold out hope it'll be a Fray movie instead, with Joss doing the script.
As a Buffy spin-off, wouldn't a Fray movie require the Kuzuis' consent if Joss decides to make it?
The Great Gonzo, heres a terrifying thought.

Uwe Boll.

Dun dun dunnnn.
Thank you Aly! You are awesome, and you have integrity. Props.
And that's why we love her.

I would say the Batman movie was a re-imaging of the comic and not a reboot. The so-called Trek movie was lucrative, but to me not at all necessary.

The idea of a Jossless Buffy movie makes me - no, I can't say it in polite company.
I'm surprised to see this come up again. Given the amount of mud that's been thrown at the idea of a Joss-less Buffy, surely anyone with half a brain would ditch the idea and move on.
I don't even acknowledge this. I rarely take lodging in Denial but this is a right cause.
In the ASH article that they link to, was Buffy really written when Joss was 19 or was that hyperbole and he had the idea since as early as then?

In any case, I actually have a little trouble imagining that they would resist the urge to relaunch it. It's a popular creature concept, a recognizable name, a horror thing, and there hasn't been anything to stop anyone from doing it with things like Halloween or Friday the 13th.

They did try to remake Dark Shadows in 2004. A pilot was made starring Alex Newman (guy who played Drogyn in Angel Season 5, the guy who guarded the hole in "A Hole in the World" and who was sacrificed in "Power Play", also starred in the Dune series in 2000), but The WB passed on it. Now a new film is slated for a potential 2011 release. Johnny Depp is a big fan of the franchise and wants to get it made. I vaguely recall hearing something about him playing Barnabus Collins. No clue who's writing/directing and the IMDB is hiding the details, viewable only to IMDB-Pro subscribers. I liked the 12-episode 1991 series a lot as it aired when I was 9, remember discussing it with friends (was it meant to be a limited series, or did it just get canceled?). Haven't gotten around to renting or buying the DVDs to see if it still works. Never seen the apparentely very cheesy cult soap opera original from the `60s or `70s.

*sigh* Re: The Kazuis doing a Buffy movie. This is a huge missed opportunity for more Joss-penned Buffy material. It's right there practically at our movie theatres, all they gotta do is invite Joss in and re-think their casting ideas. If a good script is written (by Whedon or possibly one of the other Mutant Enemy writers if it came down to it), Gellar and company would probably jump on board. The genre is hot, seems like studios would be on board, ready to back it with cash...I know unknowns would lessen the budget considerably (although aside from Gellar, would the supporting cast members, who are medium-well-knowns on TV overall but haven't really broken into high-grossing films like Gellar has, command that large of paycheques?), but it might comfort the execs more to know that a worldwide built-in audience is behind this and not badmouthing it all over the place (heck, the press themselves are hating on it, given all the columnists out there who're Buffyverse fans).

Yeah, I don't understand the thinking behind it. I guess it has marginally more mindshare than some other (non-Twilight) vampire fiction but there's so much ill will against it from what should be the in-built fanbase that it seems the negatives outweigh the positives enough that an unknown property would make more sense.

Dunno when he thought of it but IIRC he'd been writing the script (or considering the script anyway) since around '88/'89 and then finished it while he was on 'Roseanne' (and being underutilised) which would put him in his early-mid twenties at inception.

I would say the Batman movie was a re-imaging of the comic and not a reboot. The so-called Trek movie was lucrative, but to me not at all necessary.

"Batman Begins" was about as much of a reboot as it's possible to make IMO - it was an origin story without any of the cast or plot from the previous 4 modern, live action films (in that sense it narrowly beats "Casino Royale" which had a few cast members like e.g. Judi Dench from the earlier Bond movies). Returning to source material for inspiration doesn't mean it's not a reboot.
If it was just a Buffyverse thing, and not directly Buffy, then I don't see the problem of Joss not being involved (though, I still think it would be better if he was). But if Buffy the character is in it (or any of the series regulars), then there is a huge problem. I'm all for expanding the universe a bit, but if this is just a remake of Buffy (sans Joss) I doubt many of us would pay much attention. And if *we* don't, who will?

The new Dark Shadow's film starring Johnny Depp as Barnabus Collins is being directed by Tim Burton. It's his next film once he finishes post production on Alice In Wonderland.

A lot of you guys forgot that the Kuzuis did approach Whedon after the furor broke over the news of Buffy getting a movie redo. And he politely declined, saying that he already did what he wanted to with the character in the TV series.

So, unless Joss finds an incredible story idea for a Buffy spinoff and gets it in production with the Kuzuis (with full creative control) -- I'm afraid our ideal movie won't surface (and needless to say, without Aly). And after a long period, I haven't heard any more news about the Buffy redo, in terms of a director and writer -- so I suppose it's canned until further notice.
That was going to be my question, Mcjw_serenity, whether Joss would even want to be involved. Given what they did to his original movie script, I would have guessed that he'd want to stay far away from anything they had their hands in.
Joss worked with these people before. They mangled what he wrote. Could that be the reason he passed on the new movie?

Obviously he isn't finished with the Buffyverse, since he's active with Season 8 comics. What if he could bring that vision to the big screen?

Now if he were given FULL creative control, with no strings other than an adequate budget, might he still pass on it? Only Joss himself could answer.

Hypothetically speaking Joss, how would YOU go? Enquiring minds want to know.
A reboot, made with the rights the original producers still have (Pike, Merrick etc but no Willow, Giles Spike etc) would need new actors for Buffy and the rest. A continuation of the TV verse (with the cast we all know and love) would mean Fox would have to be involved, and so less control, and profit, for the Kuzui's.

Plus of course, we're in a vampire craze now, if they actually manage to start serious pre production now it would be at the very least six to nine months before it could premier, and everyone could be sick to death of vampires by then. They could have missed the boat already.
Joss already turned down being involved with the reboot.I can't blame him.He would of had to pitch himself to the producers.

1)Why should he have to pitch himself?

2)Why would he want to reboot? The T.V. series was his reboot basically.
zz9, The Twilight Saga will still be going on, at least, till 2011 and I don't see True Blood and The Vampire Diaries ending anytime soon either.
The Twilight craze doesn't mean that any film with vampires will do well. Circue du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant isn't exactly doing stellar business at the BO despite an existing fanbase from the book series. Vampire craze or not I don't see a point of anyone making a film so vehemently opposed by the fandom.
Well, let them make the movie. I want so see how upset and stupid they feel when it bombs in the box office. Honestly, Buffyverse fans like us, obviously, would make up the majority of the population in theatres if this happened. But the thing is, I can speak for a lot of people and saying that I WON'T be in that theatre. So, it'll bomb, they'll regret their decision, and we'll still all be upset that they even made an effort to do this thing without Joss and the lovely cast he casted.

So...in order to avoid that, they can simply give up the idea. Plain and simple.
Besides, I can't imagine many Twilight/Vampires(mainly Twilight) fans being in the audience either seeing as they would rather be watching their vamps sparkle instead of burn.

So...in short, I'm totally against the idea of this thing. Bad idea, very bad.
And Alyson rocks -- Nothing more to say on that.
