I have to be honest, I just don't think they look right for each other. I always envisioned Seth with another woman of equal dress, character, and views on the world. She just doesn't present herself like that.

Well, you could, but people tend to get upset about that sort of thing :). Take a gander at definitions four, five and twenty-two: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/single. Dictionary.com seems to only use it to distinguish between married/unmarried and not the rather more complex permutations of dating, committed, engaged, etc. Same with M-W: see definition 1b. So you are technically single, but engaged to not be single :) - tell him the news gently and then offer to let him burn a printed copy of the definition :).

Yeah, there's a spectrum between single and married. Many many people who are not married are also not single.
