(SPOILER) Cover art for Buffy #37. Wasn't expecting that.

I think it's what they call a tonal shift.
Awesome. Buffy regressing to her high school self (and her high school boyfriend), resulting in horrific suffering for those she loves. High School Xander and Willow are the zombies husks in the foreground.
Zomibe Xander has two eyes. And there's a sentence I thought I would never have to type.
Are the zombie folks meant to be her friends? The two on the ground look like Xander and Willow...
I guess the "softer side of sears' would have become apparent to me after a fashion.......
Simon, I think it's meant to be their High School selves. The outfit Willow is wearing at first glance looks like her Wicca wear, but I think it's actually more Softer Side of Sears of Yore. And of course Buffy is definitely High School style with the shorter than short skirt, wearing the cross and hair style.

"Maybe Angel was right. You can't change a person's past. And just by telling them, you'll change their future into who knows what. But for one brief shiny-shiny... it was great to go home again."
- Buffy,
After These Messages...

Buffy's gone home again in this issue, back to her past in Sunnydale, back to when she was with Angel. And look what that past looks like? Yikes.
That's just creepy!

There's really no other way to describe it. There's something so grotesque and scary about seeing Willow and Xander like that. The cover has just brought back how horrifying it was when we saw Buffy decaying in her coffin. That imagery will stick with me forever.

This is hands down my favourite Jeanty cover ever though. He did a really great job here and as per, has made an extra effort for a Joss issue. No idea what to expect from this issue though but just relieved it's a Scooby centric cover again (even if Emmie is probably right with her great assessment of what it means).
As expected, in fact, everybody died in Sunnydale's destruction and Buffy was actually in hell all this time.
Kind of interesting that Scott released this cover since the issue won't be out until October and not either cover for #36.

Going back to one of his Q/A's.

9. Vergil: Which cover from 36 to 40 do you think fans will talk about the most or will get the most attention?

Scott Allie: It's actually hard to say. The one I think I can single out is #40—that that's the cover that will cause the least stir. There are definitely things about #36-#39 that're gonna get you guys talking. There are gonna be people angry over Jo's cover for #36 who'll blame me, but Joss told us exactly what #36 should be, described it pretty specifically. Georges's cover for #36 is fun, probably get reposted a lot, but not stir much controversy. Some people will be excited and mystified by one of the covers for #37—speculation will run rampant.People are gonna get real worked up about #38, and #39 will get people amped up, I think. Those are my predictions.

Well that's high school Buffy, Xander and Willow so unless everybody died way back in S1 (judging by Willow's outfit) and she’s been dreaming ever since, I doubt it ;)
I like it. Not with respect to what it might mean--I'm not one who cares for speculation--but just graphically. It's a great, arresting image. Coolio.
It's very troma-tic.
SNT, definitely. I think it might be my favorite Jeanty cover for the season, purely for its visual power. It's also a great commentary on Buffy's chipper persona in constrast to the horror surrounding her. And makes a great connection to her fear that she's doomed to hurt her loved ones.

"You always hurt the one you love."

Interesting! Willow wears her Wellcome to the hellmouth outfit, I think. I wonder if we're in for more timetravel and more regression to highschool.
Love it, and of course it's got me a wee bit nervous for what is coming ahead...
I can honestly say that i did not see this coming. I hope we get the Jo Chen cover soon too.
Why is everyone assuming that's Xander and Willow? My first thought was that Buffy was having a Summer "Reavers dream." (now that I went back and looked Changling, it does look like one of Will's early fashion statements.)

(And did Buffy come crashing through the roof of the classroom? Reminds me of a Wizard of Oz sort of thing with Buffy spinning and spinning and eventually landing on the wicked witch, er, Marci, because, you know, she's invisible.)
It's definitely Willow. She's wearing the exact same dress she wore in Welcome to the Hellmouth and in her nightmare during Restless. She’s also got her longer hair like she used to in S1 :)

And the other guy just looks exactly like Xander and is consistent with how Jeanty has drawn him throughout S8, except he's got two eyes here because its high school Xander.

Marcie Ross! LMAO. Maybe she really is back afterall? 'cept she's all decomposing in the corner and no one can see her cause she's all blinvisible.

I didn't know that zombies have blue eyes! And Buffy still wears the cross necklace.

Must be another dream

@wexina thanks, I'm still trying to familiarize with comics style.

"I wish Angel had never come to Sunnydale." "Done."

Buffy saves the Slayers in Season 8 but her friends die in season 1 because Angel wasn't there to save the day. No Angel means no Spike and Dru turning up too. A brave new world. I hope Buffy likes it.
damn you space time continuum.
"I wish I've never been a Slayer"
@anca: The eyes aren't blue per se, but they're colored to suggest the milkiness that tends to cloud the eyes of the decomposing.
And is it just me, or is that Oz sitting in the desk next to Buffy (on Buffy's left)? Wow, what a cover!

But it's "softer side of Sears" corpse Willow there. Angel never did any day-saving before WTTH. Or are you saying his presence affected her fashion choices?
Also, he kinda had to be in Sunnydale to give Buffy the necklace.
Easily my favorate Jeanty cover, I love it. I only buy the Chen covers, but I may pick this one up as well.

I was totally thinking of The Wish (number 3 on my top ten Buffy eps). Also, I don't think we need to take what Willow's wearing as being from WTTH. I mean come on, how many times do you wear the same thing in your life? I think it was a choice to use that outfit to show blatantly on the cover that this is high school time we're looking at, not present time. So Angel's absence would be missed about mid season 1 (and considering season 1 is only 12 eps, that's significant).
As a bunch of people have noted, Dead!Willow's outfit is what Willow wore at the beginning of "Welcome to the Hellmouth." However, Dead!Xander's shirt is actually the color of the one Jesse had on when he met Buffy in that episode.

I am pretty sure this means absolutely nothing but hey, it's a long wait between these comics; we have to get our entertainment where we can.
Odd as a three-pronged three.
Not only are they zombies, they are DEAD zombies. Dead undeads. And I wish we could see "Oz"'s fingernails, if they're black we know it's him. Pretty much.

Micro mini, cross necklace... season 1 or maybe 2. Why is Buffy's head so big?
LOL @ Simon concerning the presence of Xanders eyes.

This cover is really really cool. Reminds me of Resident Evil, the next to last one. It's pretty creepy and thought provoking, I can't wait to see the other cover too.
I think they're only zombies if they can move. Otherwise, they're candidates for the next episode of Bones.

For all we know it could be a dream sequence, but I agree that it's a cool cover.
I am going to echo others and say that this is my fave of Jeanty's covers to date. It's so amazingly creepy, and I love it anytime high school Buffy gets referenced! Jeanty has done an excellent job capturing Buffy's high school look, and I *love* that he decided to put Willow in the "softer side of Sears" dress from the first episode. Can't wait to see what this issue has in store for us!
