It wouldn't suprise me if the themed box sets did happen. The Star Trek franchise has been doing it for a number of years.

Out of curiousity, what does a themed boxset entail? Is it just a collection of the "best" episodes of that character? With, for instance, extra clips/interviews about them or something?

I just got the Fox TV DVD Newsletter from the UK Fox site and it had an image at the bottom of the email that said:

I got the email too and the "Best of Buffy" was the only highlighted bit so I'd assume what it means is that the dvd contains what is considered to be the best Angel, Spike, Faith and Willow-centric episodes.
I wouldn't imagine that they're going to bring out a disc for each charater, but they'll probably do whatever it takes to push back the season 7 & 4 releases back as far as possible. It really annoys me that the 24 box sets come out here like a week after they finish on TV, and we're lucky if we get the Buffy and Angel ones within a year.
