Buffy the Butt-Kicking Babe. Buffy is the tops, the pinnacle, the apogee of butt-kicking babes...

Some other good ones here: Ripley, Lisbeth Salander, Sarah Connor...

Some really good choices (Eowyn!), but any list like that should also have Echo and River.
I didn't mind the lack of Echo and River, it showed it from a less biased perspective which is refreshing actually.

I'm curious - less biased towards what, exactly?

Oh heck yeah, some of the best of the best are on that list and Buffy totally deserves to be heading it. Ripley, Starbuck, Sarah C...
I think that when Jaymii says "a less biased perspective," s/he is referring to a bias towards Whedon's work.

As much as I love my Whedonverse, to see both River and Echo be on that list, along with Buffy, would be much too much.

Though I do wish that lists like these included media beyond film and television; there are more than enough "butt-kicking babes" to be found in comic books, video games, and novels across the years and around the world, and they've all contributed.

I agree that River and Echo should be in this list. If Joss creates more ass kicking women characters than anyone else (which he does), there's no reason why more of them shouldn't be included.

Brunettes ?

Jessica Jones. 'Nuff said.

True; of course, Eowyn isn't originally a film character, so she's sort of an exception on this list. Same for Lisbeth Salander.

One novel character I would love to see on this list: Arya Stark. Maybe after a few seasons on HBO...
A list without the #1? Xena not mentioned at all? You have to be kidding me.
Like it or not, name recognition is almost always a factor in lists like this. River and Echo just aren't a big enough part of the cultural zeitgeist.
