Pants Splitter by Gord Lacey - A review of the Firefly DVDs by the TVShowsOnDVD.com webmaster.

I think the best thing about that review is that Gord Lacey makes it clear that he was one of those viewers who gave up on the series after two episodes in. That might prompt a few people who originally hated or were indifferent to the series to give it another chance. It seems a lot of people were unenthused by it after the first couple eps, if not outright shunning if after "The Train Job". Which is sad, 'cause a few moments in "Bushwacked", but mostly all of "Our Mrs. Reynolds", was what got me to stick around until the series hit its stride (which in my opinion, was "Out of Gas", but also "Jaynestown" just before that for the humor and characters). It plays even better, even some of the uneven earlier episodes, now that the pilot can be viewed first and everything else is in order. The DVDs package is so beautiful I wanna cry.

Finally was able to see Serenity in its entirety last night, thanks to the DVDs, and I just gotta say it was an injustice that this series was not given a fair shake. We may never know all the facts behind-the-scenes that led to Firefly's removal from prime time television, but whatever the details, it was wrong.

The 'heroes' of the Firefly story are thieves, rebels and prostitutes. I believe there was a concern among some executives about the issues that Firefly addressed. They were afraid if left to their own devices, Whedon's shop would say things about humanity and society to which Fox feared would be held accountable. Great art shunned for fear of the message. Hard to believe this was the same house that stood behind X-Files a decade ago, isn't it? Suits are so fickle.
"Serenity" is so gorgeous--the perfect introduction to the strange, beautiful, frightening world of Firefly--that I'm both awed and outraged every time I see it. Awed at it's excellence and promise, outraged that the world was prevented from seeing it as intended. Among other circumstances, it was certainly one element in the failure of the series.

Write that script, Joss! Universal, make that movie!
