Anthony Head: "Oh stop. It's appalling." Comicbookmovie.com talks to Mr Head about Merlin Season 3 and tags on a question about the prospect of a Joss-less Buffy movie.

I wonder where he was going with the "I have been made aware" statement? It sounded like he was going to say something about the "reboot" but then interrupted himself and mentioned the movie.

But I do love that man. He's got such a wicked sense of humor. So good to hear his voice again. Can't wait until we start the Great Bronze:Beta Buffy Rewatch!
There are several reasons why I absolutely adore this man as an actor. His loyalty and very well-formed opinions and his sense of humour are just three of them. Cannot wait for Merlin series Three!
DOn't you mean season 4? Season 3 has already aired...or are you a US fan? We're just getting it now. It's season 4 I'm anxious to hear about though.
This sounds like some of the publicizing they were doing for the US/Canadian fans as Season (Series) 3 has not yet aired here. He mentions having talked to other journalists.
I think "It's appalling" is the best 2 word summation of the new movie, I have heard.
For our deaf users: "Oh stop. It's.... appalling. Absolutely appalling. You can not take something creative and as beautifully formed as 'Buffy' and decide to remake it without the creators saying.. Without him being on board. I know what they - I don't know, I've never met them - I have been made aware that they changed.. Well, the movie was a completely different concept to the show. Basically, the characters were the same but it wasn't joss' beautiful humour. And you know, I don't - I don't think they should make it. I understand the business; vampires are popular, let's make a movie. There's a part of me that wishes joss would say 'You know what, let's make our own.' But I know he won't, he's too big for that. He doesn't need to. He's got bigger fish to fry".
The man speaks many true words. I also like the statement that he wished Joss would try to make his own film in retaliation, meaning he must still be interested in reprising his role as Giles!

Is it time we started Ripper rumours again? It has gone a few months without any, so must be due some more.
He is such a lovely man.
There need to be more people like Mr. Head in the entertainment business.
Well said, Anthony !! So looking forward to season 4 of Merlin. :D
I really need to catch up on Merlin and Ash's "Victorian father". Right there is a really good descriptor for Uther.

Yes, appalling. He hits part of it on the head when he references "Joss' beautiful humor". Any attempt to put Buffy on film without him will only be, at best, a weak, dreary facsimile.
I'm amused that ASH watches Judge Judy.
"I wonder where he was going with the "I have been made aware" statement? It sounded like he was going to say something about the "reboot" but then interrupted himself and mentioned the movie."

Not having listened to it in the last twelve hours (ie I can't remember it) but perhaps he thought they meant the recent Giles storyline in the S8 comics.
I thought he was about to compare the reboot to the show, referring to the show as the original, then remembered that the movie was the original and segued into talking about that.
What bothers me most about this movie, is that they are inevitably banking on the fans of Buffy, who are not die hard enough to know Joss isn't involved, or even know Joss was involved in the original. And there are heaps of em out there. Most people I know who enjoyed Buffy, have no idea who Joss is.

Then of course, they also want to cash in on the Twilight and Vampire Diaries fans too.

I presume we would not legally be allowed to launch a campaign simply stating that the new Buffy movie does not have the same creative forces as the original movie and series?
I remember Sodding Nancy Tribe saying that The Hero Complex (at the L.A. Times) might be doing a follow-up on their original article which was one that broke the news about the film reboot. Not trying to stir up the hornet's nest again, but wonder if they will and what it will entail. Sure, I signed a petition against the film but really, I doubt there is any campaign which could be mounted that would stop a movie studio from proceeding with a project it is set on doing. If there is legal precedent, I don't know what that would be.
i never watched Merlin, mainly cause the guy played Merlin annoyed me, But Anthony Stewart Head was always good in it. Maybe i should check it out.
God, I love Tony Head. That man is ALL class.
"I presume we would not legally be allowed to launch a campaign simply stating that the new Buffy movie does not have the same creative forces as the original movie and series?"

Actually I think it would be perfectly legal. It wouldn't be libel since it would simply be stating a fact about the movie. It's like making a campaign that says "this movie does not contain whales," it's (most likely) true but I doubt it would have an impact on the decision to make the film or the people who see it, either because they are unaware of Joss' lack of participation in the movie or because they just want to see vampires.

I do love Tony Head so much. I'm really glad all of the actors seem to be adamant that without Joss a Buffy movie would be horrible and they want nothing to do with it.
@GilesQueen - I'm an Aussie, and the channel over here that is/was airing it, have been a right bunch of so-and-so's, in regards to when it's on/off/on/off... I haven't been able to keep up, so gave up part-way through series 2, and have ordered series 3 on dvd ;)
Oh, ok. It's annoying to be so far behind, I know.

@Nathan-yeah, you should check it out, it's a good show, even if they take a lot of liberties with the legends.
There's a part of me that wishes joss would say 'You know what, let's make our own.' But I know he won't, he's too big for that. He doesn't need to. He's got bigger fish to fry".

It never fails to disappoint me to hear others express (and for me to have an inkling of a realization) that Joss is now too big for a Buffy movie.
Pretty sure ASH means Joss is too big a man (as in the expression "be the bigger man") i.e. he's not the kind to stoop to petty vindictiveness like deliberately queering someone else's pitch. Doubt he means Joss is above making a Buffy movie or too big for Buffy (after all, he's clearly not above writing/exec producing a Buffy comic).
Emmie, he's too big to be doing Buffy comics but he does them anyway. I'm willing to bet he earns next to no money on them compared to what he would get from investing that considerable time into a TV show or movie, but there he is.

I actually think Tony meant both ways. The reality is, Joss is doing The Avengers, which will almost certainly be the biggest movie release of 2012. There's no way he needs to sit around and think about more Buffy as a career move.
I must say, I'm absolutely floored that one of Joss Whedon's actors is vocally opposed to someone making a new version of the project they worked with Joss on without Joss being involved. It's not just me; there's actually an entire other me standing beside me as I type this, and he is floored too.
Now you're abusing sarcasm ;)
Yeah but sarcasm gets off on that stuff ;).

There's no way he needs to sit around and think about more Buffy as a career move.

True but to me there's a difference between "doesn't need to" and "is too big for". He's never needed to IMO - since the show ended he's always had something on the go, whether it's an abortive script, (at least two) bestselling comics or an internet sensation.

(i.e. he's got "bigger fish to fry" than responding, not necessarily than Buffy itself is how I read it)
I agree with Vandelay. Ripper has long been the tried and true WMDlike rumor for Jossnews in lean times and I miss it.
i guess i'll check the show out, no promises on how i'll feel about it, I know my sister watches them and she has the first and maybe the second season. i'm an aussie to, i think it's on channel 10, and god help them if they can keep a show on for more then one or two episodes. it's like when they'd put Veronica Mars on at 10:30 on a Friday night after some crappy movie, and then wondered why it wasn't getting enough viewers. didn't stop me from watching it though. There's another show i miss.
Saying he's "too big for" that strikes me as a bit egotistical. I guess I can see he might have meant the "bigger fish to fry" deal. But then, I'd consider it a very big fish indeed if he did his own Buffy movie. Why is that little fish now?
As I say, the expression isn't about ego, it's to do with being "big" (mature, able to take it on the chin) rather than "small" (petty, vindictive). Urban Dictionary actually has it right this time. Or here's a blog entry about it (came up top on Google). So (to me) he's effectively saying:

"There's a part of me that wishes joss would say 'You know what, let's make our own.' [i.e. vindictively try to spoil their movie's chances] But I know he won't, he's too big [not petty/vindictive enough] for that. He doesn't need to [be petty]. He's got bigger fish to fry [than to worry about what other filmmakers are doing since he has his own successful career]" (stuff in square brackets is mine obv.)

Maybe talking about "being the bigger person" is predominantly a UK expression ?

Of course, maybe he genuinely does mean Joss is now above making a Buffy movie, i'm not ASH so don't know but there's definitely another (over here i'd even say more common) way to read it.

ETA: Or "bigger fish" may be literal and in that sense is surely true ? A Buffy movie would be great but if it ever happens (which seems doubtful) i'd bet my eye teeth it won't have the sort of budget that 'The Avengers' does (~ $150 million from what I gather).

(and to R a double 'to' BTW)
