The Best Scripted Hourlongs of 2003!! Hercules at Ain't It Cool News places Buffy at #1 "I’d hazard to guess no other series hit as many highs last year" and Angel at #4 "I’d rate this season the series’ best".

"I loved the (Buffy) finale with a fearsome white-hot fiery love."

Me too. Me too.
I'll always love Herc's enthusiasm, but I really disagree with him on a lot. The second half (well, most of what came after the seventh episode, really) of Buffy Season 7 was such a disappointment. It didn't live up to the promise of all the "From Beneath You It Devours" and the excellence or hints of excellence from episodes such as "Lessons" (a premiere I saw as greatly repairing some of the damage that the lesser bits of Season 6 inflicted, and I'm someone who loved most of Season 6 way more than 7), "Selfless", and "Conversations w/Dead People".

He sees 4-star episodes in "First Date,” “Get It Done,” “Dirty Girls,” “End of Days,” and “Chosen”? "Chosen" maybe, but the rest were, aside from a moment or a scene or two, pretty forgettable. "The Killer in Me" (despite Kennedy) and in some regards "Lies My Parents Told Me" (no I'm not any kind of diehard Spike fan) were better representative of what Season 7 could've been. Those episodes seemed to still care about the individual characters rather than the awful plodding machine that the season long arc had become.

"I’d hazard to guess no other series hit as many highs last year."

I guess he didn't watch the same versions of Carnivale and Six Feet Under that I did (both of which he lists as tied for the #10 spot)...Both outperformed the overall second half of Buffy Season 7.

Don't even get me started on people who think that Angel Season 5 is the best season yet after only eight episodes and all that stilted exposition.

Taste is subjective, I know I know. :) Just wanted to rant.
Haven't posted in ages but I just has to say how much I love Herc. His joy in what he writes about is a welcome respite to the empty snark that fills the net. Terrific summation of my feelings for Buffy's final season. I could argue with some of the details but certainly not his love for the final tales of Sunnydale.

Long Live Herc.

Wanted to add that I have great love for Herc's joy-joy even when I don't share it. In the last year, I have come to hate The Gilmore Girls with a grand opera-style passion but his little write-up just made me jealous I don't feel the love anymore.
