James Marsters TV Guide interview. He's happy to be on Angel and tells what it's like to be in a band.

"I'm glad I don't have to go look for projects like all my friends from Buffy do..."

Yikes! I'm sure he didn't mean it to sound like it did. Makes it sound like they're a bunch of losers who can't get hired. Sort of.

Still, his enthusiasm is always infectious.
I just saw GOTR play on Saturday for the first time. They're not bad (they're not great either). I'll admit, 98% of the reason I was there was to see James and take photos (and potentially meet him, but that fell through.) The fangirl in me was happy to see that some of the mannerisms of the character are actually the mannerisms of James. And since the show is still in production, his hair was bleached (minor dark roots)... but music was ok, entertaining. A lot of fun to see.
Jenguin, is it worth braving 4 front bands and too expensive drinks? I'm thinking about seeing him in LA at the end of January, but they have so many opening acts! I know, I probably won't have many chances to see him, so I should jump at it. Was the venue cool with taking pics?
I've heard some of their music and I agree with you. They're a decent garage band, but they'll never be big. It seems more like a fun hobby for James than something that would ever replace acting.
Rogue - I suppose it's worth braving 4 front bands.. i braved 3 of them on Saturday. (The first, Power Animal, is the members of GOTR minus James) The bands were 'eh'. Most of the time I'd rather hear the instruments (all bands did great with those) and vocals i could have passed on.

I think it's worth it at least once. If you don't have the chance to go to a con when James is there, this is your best shot at seeing him 'live'.

Photos - that's up to the venue/band at the time. Call ahead. In my case, a friend said it was a no-camera rule.. but I brought mine just in case. Thank gawd cause she was wrong and I was able to take photos. (if curious, www.jenguin.com)
I'm a big fan of the actor-James and the character-Spike. But do you think James really says, "right on, dude" and "baby" at the end of each sentence? I guess I'm just too far from the Hollywood and rock crowds for it to sound natural.
LB - It sounds differently if you think about it, and if you're not used to hearing people talk like that. To say 'right on, dude' -- don't let your mind fall into the california-suntanned-surfer-dude category for example. I don't know about after each sentence, but it does sound natural.
Still cameras were fine at GOTR's show at the El Rey here in Los Angeles a few months ago. I even saw somebody taping a performance with a videocamera but I got the impression that he was a relative of one of the opening bands.
No offence, love James but I have to be honest GOTR is a second-rate bar band at best and unless they put some real time and effort into it that's all they will ever be. However the double edge sword has begun to hack away at them if he believes people when they say they are great, cause they are already treated as a celebrity band, perhaps with one slight difference Charlie the guitarist is also cute and charmingly sexy and has stolen some of James following away from him. The truth is though if James wasn't fronting the band not many would go see them, let alone buy their albums. Some of their songs are passable but most seem out of sync, voices clashing, instrumentals that seem to be listening to a slower or faster track than what the rest of the band is at. I saw them at Dragoncon and after a few songs a crowd that started at about 5000 was quickly reduce to perhaps a little over a 1000 people. Even if you are a celebrity sometimes that is not even enough. I can only hope the sound system in SF is better, cause I'm giving their live act a second chance after the Dragoncon performance just to give them the benefit of the doubt and to see if the up coming changes in the band will help. If you want to check out a surprisingly good band featuring a former Buffy alumni, check out Adam Bucsh's band Common Rotation - kinda of a folk rock feel with a bit more edge but they have got the sound and the vocals down and they could be a headliner in their own right - instead of a celebrity type band.
Second what Raven said - hearing James talk about GOTR usually gives me hurty feelings.

On the other hand, after seeing Christian Kane's performance in "Dead End," I'm eager to hear his band Kane. Anybody seen/heard them yet?
Guess it all comes down to personal preference. I actualy prefer garage/bar-sounding bands *points at name* over much of what we usualy see.

Have not heard Christian Kane's band, but I heard it was country and so it won't float my boat.

Edited for: About what he said in refering to Buffy co-stars, he says something else after it like "i hope they find things but I am glad my plate is full now". Liked this interview, but it is hard to take TVguide interviews (hope this doesn't get me thrown off) as Gospel because they have been known to play up things (I think there was a recent, or not recent, contrversy involving an actor from some tv show who was upset with them for adding in or something?).

And what are 'hurty feelings'?
