The top five male characters of the Whedonverse. Well according to Daemon's TV. Who features on your list?

That's pretty much my list, with Wesley and Angel hovering around.
Mal and Giles are all I agree on. Sorry.
A couple of months back, I asked our followers on Twitter and Facebook "who is the best character on Buffy?", and the next day I did the same for Angel, the day after for Firefly and then finally for Dollhouse. It was pretty close but it was all male characters that got picked, Spike, Wesley, Mal and Topher. And then I did a "best of the best" question with the four characters facing off against each other. From what I recall, it was neck and neck between Spike and Mal in terms of popularity.
It's a lame list without Angel or Wes. Come on...
My top five men would probably be Wash, Giles, Wesley, Topher, and Spike. But it is hard to narrow down the list since I was always a huge fan of Jayne Cobb (and who can resist Doctor Horrible?)!
Mal
Wash
Xander
Spike
Wesley

(not necessarily in that order)

Honourable mentions: Oz, Giles, Riley, Angel, Dr H, Jayne + all the other male characters.
But not Parker.
My list (not in any particular order):
Angel
Dr. Horrible
Spike
Topher
Giles
Spike, Giles, Mal, Wes, Angel. But five is not enough for the sheer awesome in Joss' 'verses.
How about we just lump Angel and Spike together and call them, say....Spangel? =D

Spike is always number one for me.
Mal
Wesley
Jayne
Angelus..not Angel
Angel
Giles
Mal
Spike
Topher
Spike and Mal and the other guys.
From what I recall, it was neck and neck between Spike and Mal in terms of popularity.

I'm not sure whether it's a testament to Joss, Nathan, both, the universe, that Mal (a character who had one season on TV) was up against Spike, (a much-beloved character [okay, in some quarters] who had 6 seasons). But it's pretty great.
Giles
Xander
Wash
Mal
Angel
[edit]Wooooohoo, I was so very wrong!

Angel
Giles
Simon
Lorne
Oz

[ edited by Kairos on 2011-06-08 15:00 ]
Favorite:
1. Wes
2. Angel
3. Lorne
4. Doyle
5. Mal

Least Favorite:
1. Connor
2. Shep Book
3. Big Bad Adam
4. Warren
5. Moist
Angel(us)
Wesley
Mal
Giles
Simon

It was difficult to choose between Simon and Oz for fifth place, but in the end Simon won because he wears waistcoats. And Victor and Topher would probably be on there if I'd watched Dollhouse more recently than the other shows.

Ooh! And as long as we're also doing least favorites:

Caleb
Warren
Spike
Riley
Ballard

Being a character I like even less than Spike is quite an accomplishment. Caleb and Warren deserve medals. Riley and Ballard just kind of irritate me, but I don't actively dislike them.

But not Parker.

Ah but Parker's not a male, he's a poopyhead [/get out clause that's not really].

As to least favourite, that'd just be the bottom five from my favourites list (with least favourites i'd say it matters more whether you're talking about the character or the "person" - I don't like Warren for instance but as a character he's a decent villain. Struggling to come up with bad male characters in fact. Ballard late in 'Dollhouse' S2 lost some of his interesting edges IMO, maybe him if we're allowed to be temporally specific).
I would have a terrible time coming up with 'least favorites' because I love an interesting bad guy (ie Parker and Warren were really great characters in my opinion), but here goes:
Caleb
Angel
Riley
Niska
Doyle
(I don't expect anyone else to agree).
Simon
Mal
Giles
Spike
And Oz and Wesley tie.
neck and neck between Spike and Mal in terms of popularity

Simon, thank you for that (I was wondering about the results)

Spike,
Wesley,
Giles,
Gunn,
Lindsey.
Giles
Mal
The Operative
Oz
The Mayor
Right now, it's

Spike
Mal
Wesley
Topher
Xander

Before season 8, Angel would be there...
Mal
Angel
Spike
Topher
Giles
I agree with Moscow Watcher. I think Angel lost a lotta love with Season 8.

Spike
Xander
Giles
Gunn
Lorne

The Buffyverse is my first love, but my favorites in Firefly are Wash and Jayne.

I saw Caleb before Mal, maybe that influences my opinion. Plus, Mal calling Inara a whore in that tone offended me. It was Caleby.
Favorite:
Mal
Jayne
Xander
Spike
Giles

Least:
Connor
Riley
Dawn

Well, I can't think of 5 I hate.
Wesley was the first to come to my mind.
This is easy:
Spike
Angel
Dr. Horrible
Rupert Giles
Mal
Just kidding. That wasn't easy all.
But still, I'm definitely correct. Objectively.
My favorite male characters are:

Angel
Doyle
Wesley
Gunn
Giles
I agree on all of them, but can we make it 6 so I can add Topher to the list? Actually, 7 because I love Wesley too. The Whedonverse has too many great characters!
For me, it's:

Mal
Topher
Giles
Gunn
Xander
Can't have a list like that without Wesley.
No love for Bicks. They drag him away and no one ever mentions him again...
Bicks was OK but he's no Travis, that's fer sure.

(this may be a bit of a newb question the answer to which everyone knows but was that a nod by any chance B!x ? Or pure coincidence ? Or ambiguous enough for you to at least use it as a pick-up line ?)

Can't believe I totally forgot Topher too. I may need a treatment.
Just for the record, I don't dislike any male character in the 'Verse(s). There isn't one I can think of that doesn't serve a specific purpose. In one of the polls the Black posted at Facebook, "Who is the best character on Angel? I said:

For poignancy sake and because he died too soon, I'm going to say Glenn Quinn as Doyle. Every time I watch Season 1: "Our rats are low"... I tear up.

And that is not to say the other characters/actors are less than. That's why after I chose Spike over Mal in a later one, I'm not doing polls anymore.
Wesley, first and foremost
Angel
Spike
Oz
Wash
1. Wesley
2. Angel
3. Mal
4. Xander
5. Giles
Well, as long as this is as characters and not people...

Mal
Spike
Topher
The Mayor
Jayne

Those are the ones I think would be delicious to write for--with honorable mentions going out to Mr. Trick and Holden Webster. They both had lots of mileage left in their characters and were poofed too soon.
When we do this stuff, or I read polls elsewhere, people's choices usually seem sorta ambiguous to me - in many cases, I'm not sure if people's faves are "folks I would like to have as friends" or "best-written or most effective characters". The distinction is interesting...

My favorite Whedon'verse male characters are not necessarily folks I would like to have a beer with, but folks that I always enjoy watching, for various reasons. Not ranked in order are:

Giles
Spike
Wesley
Xander
Mal

Honorable mentions to Topher, Wash, Oz, Numfar, Badger, and (taking a leaf from Saje's book), every other male character.

I don't really track "least favorite characters" - there are those that I maybe think are less effective than others, but they are always very minor or peripheral and sorta not worth fussing about.

But as long as we're doing "as long as we're doing" ; > - I don't usually split up the female characters from the male characters in my mind, so my favorite female characters are (in no particular order):

Buffy
Willow
Anya
Adele
Fred

with honorable mentions to Zoe, Inara and Kaylee.

ETF: the usual

Spike
Giles
Mal
Dr. Horrible
Topher
Top 5 Male

1. Mal
2. Wesley
3. Xander
4. Giles
5. Angelus

Top 5 Female

1. Willow
2. Buffy
3. Faith
4. Tara
5. Darla

Only the 5th place spot on both lists was tricky for me. There's no way I could leave out any of the other eight, but that leaves a heck of a lot of characters going for those remaining places. Too many honourable mentions to mention. ;)
I love Dr. Horrible, but we only have about an hour of material with DH so that love didn't grow exponentially over time like so many other Whedon characters.

I'm going to have to give his slot to Victor. My love for that character was sealed with his dead-on impersonation of Topher! Victor was the coolest of all the Dolls.

I'd disagree with Spike as well. I loved that character seasons 2-4 but I thought he was better in small powerful doses, and as soon as he started becoming much more prominent in the major storylines I felt he suffered from overexposure and lost his cool factor. Sort of like Fonzie on Happy Days.

I'd trade Spike for Jayne, who turned out to be my favorite amoral supporting player. He could be scary, he could be goofy and he could be dim, and I loved that he was motivated more by self interest than loyalty to his crew so it kept things interesting.

So my list would be:

Giles
Xander
Jayne
Victor
Mal

If I could choose six, Wesley very nearly made the cut before Mal.
Crap, I forgot Cordy. I love Cordy on Buffy, and for most of Angel. I'm not a huge fan of Saint Cordelia, but luckily Charisma & the writers always gave her at least a bit of an edge.
Wait, we're doing female characters?? Jeez, that's hard. Lemme see . . .

(1) Buffy
(2) Buffy
(3) The Buffster
(4) Slayer
(5) Buffy Anne Summers

My number six is a tie between Anya and Willow. Seven, Fred.
By the way, who is Bicks?? And who is Adele?

ETA: Feelin' dumb cuz I forgot who Adele was. She must have wiped me!

Holy Crap, I forgot Faith! Actually she's number 6, just behind Buffy Anne Summers. Willow, Anya, and Fred all move down a notch.
Squishy, a substitute handler in Dollhouse who appeared only once was named (in the script, not the episode) Bicks. I adopted him because he's described as "twitchy, unreliable-looking".
Ha! Such endearing, adoptable qualities!
Holy Motherlovin' Crap!! I forgot Faith. Thanks, Squishy - where was my head?

I think Faith is brill. Iant.
And a major smokin' babe. I loved it when she and Buffy swapped bodies and fought each other -- all that hotness and asskickin'! Plus, it was way funny to see Eliza and SMG play each other.
1. WESLEY!!!
2. Mal
3. Giles
4. Lorne
5. Topher

Spike
Lorne - Xander
Topher
Oz
Mal - Jayne - Simon for the tie. They just need to make more episode for me to pick one. That's all.

Honorable mentions: Giles, Ethan, BADGER!!!, Wesley, Wash, Dr. Horrible, Doyle, Victor, Alpha...
Am I the only one who couldn't really do this for the men? I mean I love the Whedonverse women to death but I don't really care too much about the men, not that I don't think there are some good characters but I just don't get as fangirl about them as I do about the women.
For me It's all Buffyverse folk.

Spike
Angel
Giles
Wesley
Xander

I think you're doing it right. :)
The fact that Angel nor Wes is on this list has completely made me happy to ignore it:)

1/Angel
2/Spike
3/Wes
4/Mal
5/Dr Horrible
1. Spike
2. Wesley
3. Topher
4. Mal
5. Giles

1. Faith
2. Fred/Illyria
3. Willow
4. Buffy
5. Cordy / Adele / River (Can't pick. XDD)
Oopsie, I can't believe I forgot River. Clearly, my head ain't in the game. She'd have to go neck-and-neck with Fred.

... (discreet interval)...

Aww, shut up.
Okay, after putting way too much thought into this, my favorite female Whedonverse characters (not people):

Buffy
Zoe
Drusilla
YoSaffBridge
Dandelion

honorable mentions: Harmony and River

And she's not in my personal top five, but I can't believe no one's claimed Fray yet.
Okay, females:

Fred/Illyria
Faith
Buffy
Willow
Anya
My list:

1)Xander
2)Spike
3)Giles
4)Oz
5)Angel
1. Spike
2. Angel
3. Mal
4. Wesley
5. Lorne
1. Spike
2. Wesley
3. Angel
4. Mal
5. Connor

Almost making it: Laurence Dominic and Lindsey

I really wanted to put Victor on the list, but I realise that is solely because of my love of Enver, as the actual character Victor isn't that interesting, IMO.
