Holy Firefly, Batman! Nick Nunziata from CHUD.com comments on the flood of e-mails he received over his negative Firefly review.

I really don't like that guy.
Lay off Neko...I'm sure it's hard to be a critic with no taste. He has to guess whether something is good or not. Or maybe flip a coin.
Please remember to comment on the article and not the writer himself.
At least he didn't say that all Whedon fans are zombies with no discretion, only some. The holes he's talking about are all the little clues and allusions to future plotlines that never got to be played out. It's kind of like if the only Buffy episode you ever saw was Restless, what would you make of it?
Oh well, just not everyone gets it. My daughter let a friend borrow our set and she only watched the first half of the pilot episode and "just couldn't get into it". At least he invited people to share why they like the show and even offered to publish some too. I'm sure he'll get bombarded even more now with that open invitation. He's got a lot of reading ahead of him!
For about five seconds, I considered writing a piece on, say, the philosophical themes and cultural criticism in FIREFLY. Then I think, Hey, I got better things to do than try convincing some Internet critic to like a show he'll never like because it doesn't even run anymore.
Delavagus, I would respectfully like to see you change your mind and write this Nunziata a letter. (And preview it here first; I'd be really interested to read what you have to say). In fact, I hope many people write positive, thoughtful letters to him. Convincing Mr. Nunziata to rethink his opinion of Firefly may be less important than turning his readers on to what makes Firefly special and why it's worth at least a look-see. The point is no longer the cancellation of the series; the point is getting the movie made.

I think Nunziata is himself a lost cause on Firefly. If he doesn't get Firefly by now, then he probably never will. I have to admit his review made me gnash my teeth and want to call him all manner of names but at least he's offering a platform for those who disagree with him. As long as he really does follow through and publishes some positive letters -- and not the crazy-sounding ones! And furthermore, treats the writer(s) with respect. You know, no framing the letters with snarky, hah-hah-I've-got-the-last-word-you're-all-idiots comments.
It's holding firm at 19 on Amazon...which is pretty amazing...means lots and lots of re-orders....458 (and counting) favorable reviews...um...Universal...take note...please!...there is an audience out there so massive and mighty...Nunziata notwithstanding!

It's getting painful...I need...utterly need more of this....
Did this guy watch for more than 5 minutes? Plot holes? Uhh?
Yes, the only "plot holes" are the myriad developements that undoubtedly would have taken place to answer so many questions...what exactly did happen to River...what IS River, for that matter...what exactly are the hands of blue, anyway...what is the real story on Shepherd (or not) Book...and lesser matters, like Mal's loss of religion...Jayne's background (Mama's boy!)...and so much more.

Those are not so much "plot holes" as undeveloped story lines...quite a difference, I have to think.
You gotta admit that Firefly is not for everyone. As good as Buffy and Angel are, I still recognize that they appeal to a certain audience. Some people just aren't into certain types of stories.
I don't know, Tycho...you are probably right...but my (19 year-old) son, who was initially skeptical to the point of derision about Buffy now thinks that eventually, everyone on the whole planet will see the light!

Besides, it's not that the show is "for everyone", it's that the reviewer made a critical point (about "plot holes") with which I vehemently disagree.
Yes, "plot holes?" I'm not sure if "plot holes" is entirely a matter of taste. Production values, dialogue, type of humor, acting, camera work, realization of the universe being created -- I get that these are taste issues. But "plot holes?" I wish Nunziata had been more specific as to what he meant.
I knos that I am delving totally into the realm of the subjective here, but for my money, the production values, dialogue, humor, acting, camera work, etc. were phenomenal...the creation of this universe was thorougoing and fully realized, right down to the slang and the integration of the two remaining dominant cultures...

And: there were no "plot holes"!
For my money, too!
Problem is, he didn't say anything about these plot holes y'all are going on about. He said 'holes.'
I think it's a bit silly to get so angry at a guy for not liking Firefly. Well, his review was annoying because he gave no room for the possibility that there really was something good about the show that he just wasn't getting- he spoke of his opinion as fact and that's always annoying from any reviewer. However in this little blurb he did allow that some people may see something in it that he doesn't, and as mentioned invited those people to write in expressing their opinions. If Firefly doesn't mean anything to him, it doesn't. It's pointless to get angry at him for that.
Right, forcorreo, but the "holes" can logically be assumed to be in the plot, no? And I don't see any, and his not saying anything about them grates...it's as if he's simply pronouncing that there are big holes in the show, and they're so big that he doesn't even need to elaborate on them.

I don't see any. I see some commentary that is just a tad arrogant and lacking in critical integrity (and you seem to agree with me on that.) As do others. I'm not "angry" at him, but I am unhappy that somebody might read his review, believe it, and pass on the DVD set entirely.

That "some" people might like Firefly is a cold endorsement at best..."some" people like some really, really bad stuff.
