Angel - Season 5, Episode 1 review The BBC begins reviewing Season 5 of Angel to coincide with the premiere on Sky One.

Interesting info as usual from the Beeb. But do not visit if you do not want to know about this season.

Once an episode has aired in the States, it's no longer considered to be spoilers so I've removed the tag.

Didn't know about Mercedes being the longest serving of the Buffyverse characters.
I was interested by that tidbit on Mercedes as well.

It's a shame that she was brought back to replace Cordy and not before as I would have loved to have seen Cordy/Harmony interaction again. She could have tried (and failed) to partner up with Evil Cordy. haha
Hmm, I don't think they are correct about Mercedes - I think David has her beat in the longest serving member in corporating both Buffy and Angel - cause David was also in the unaired pilot. Also if you just count seasonal screen time I think James has 7 seasons of appearances (not counting crossover season) in the verse and Alexis might be closely tied if not beating her cause each actor as appeared in 6 seasons between th 2 series (also not counting her crossover as a sepeste season). I know both the guys definiely have more episodes under their belt than she does.
I don't think David appeared in the unaired pilot, at least not as Angel.

nah DB wasnt in the unaired pilot, the Angel character was added partly at the behest of the WB (they wanted a romantic lead or something like that). So wasnt in the origional pilot.

I'm fairly sure MM was in the unaired pilot, but cant say for certain without rewatching. She'd have to be for the beeb to be right, since Harmony didnt appear till The Harvest (and Angel WTTHM) in the aired versions, but im pretty sure she would have been, MM did audition for the part of Buffy, so in that sense at least she has been connected to the show longest.
Hey Ocipital, I just saw the ratings for Conviction on Sky One. I was wondering if 866,000 viewers is good for Angel.
Merecedes was in the unaired pilot. I remember her. Plus, Danny Strong had one line in it, but wasn't seen for real on TV until season 2.
Mercedes is the longest serving because she was in the unaired pilot but DB has the record for most episodes approx 150 now

Wow you got that quick.

As for the rating, judge for yourself

1 There's No Place Like Plrtz Glrb(2) - 0.94m
2 Awakening(4) - 0.89m
=3 Slouching Towards Bethlehem(4) - 0.88m
=3 Judgement(2) - 0.88m
5 Conviction(5) - 0.87m
6 Sacrifice(4) - 0.85m
7 Players(4) - 0.84m
8 Release(4) - 0.83m
=9 Salvage(4) - 0.82m
=9 Are You Now Or Have You Ever Been?(2) - 0.82m

NB data is unknown for several season 3 episodes, many of them failed to chart, so there is no record of how they did.

As you can see Conviction is the 5th highest rated episode, however it must be remembered that season 4 was a ratings success over here (especially after the previous season), and Conviction is inline with the upper boundary of Season 4, so it hasnt seen the same sort of improvement that America had. Then again Angel had Buffy as its lead in for its entire run, so there wasnt the same sort of potential, if you ask me. Still you cant stick your nose up at fifth best.

and SMG has by far the most lines (shameless self promotion), 12,778 as Buffy, plus another 132 as the Buffybot, and a sizeable proportion of the First Evils 286. DB is in second with 8,133. (at present rate it'll take about another 90 episodes to catch SMG up) MM comes in at joint 27th with 388 lines
Thanks Ocipital, you are a great source of information. Hope to see your comments here when the overnights are posted for 'Harm's Way'.
How come DB has a lot less lines though he has done more episodes?
It's all that silent brooding.
heh right on prolific
"How come DB has a lot less lines though he has done more episodes?"

A variety of reasons, the primary one is that SMG was the star for 144 episodes, whilst DB only 96, in his 56 Buffy episodes he wasnt the star, in 13 of them he wasnt even a regular, and that makes huge differences, an occasional scene here and there may count as an episode appearance, but it isnt the same as SMG being the centered star of those episodes. For example Angel had less than 10 lines in 17 of his BTVS episodes.

Then theres the difference between BtVS and AtS, for some reason there were always more lines spoken on BtVS, whether its because AtS is more action packed than Buffy, or simply that episodes were longer (by a few minutes) and didnt have previouslies back in 1997 I wouldnt like to say, but Buffy had 164 lines in NKABOTFD, where as Angel highest score in a single episode is just 111 for Couplet. Another factor might be that Buffy always quips when fighting vamps, whilst Angel broods. Last year Angel avg 65 lines an episode, whilst Buffy avg. 76. Its not a huge difference, but a quip here and there can make all the difference in the long term.
