Nathan Fillion needs someone to play Nathan Fillion in Castle's Firefly Parody. "Castle" takes its shout-outs to Browncoats to a whole new level. ETA: The character has been cast.

This promises to be way better than the "Bones"-goes-to-Comic-Con episode, wherein not a single self-professed "Buffy" fan recognized Angel in their midst.

All that comes to mind is "Mal: No, they're not gonna see this coming."
Now I'm all excited.
This sounds awesome! Nolan North or Jason Bateman, please.
I would bet that Jason Bateman would love to do it, guest starring on a hit network show is never a bad thing, and Nathan has joked a lot about being confused for Jason Bateman.
Well, Joss can act...
What say Neil Patrick Harris just to confuse us all?

Love the Joss idea, that's a great one.
Okay... this might get me to watch another episode of Castle. Heh.

I don't know if casting someone who looks a lot like Nathan might not just be confusing for non-Firefly watchers, though. If they want to keep the in-joke but not make it weird (or have to write in lines about how much they look alike), I'd suggest an actor like... ooh, say Mr Denisof...
What about Ben Browder? Although maybe getting someone who was already a lead on a scifi show would be a bit too meta.
I say that since this is already mega meta that they should cast someone with maximum meta cred.

I'll probably watch this too.
I can't believe nobody's brought up Nick Brendon yet. Joss originally wrote the part for him. It'd be hilarious fan service.
If I remember correctly, Nathan's been entertaining this idea for a long time. He wanted to have the whole Firefly cast play co-stars of the suspect and tell the detectives what a prick he really is, LOL. And Castle is his superfan and doesn't want to believe any of it.
So they might have Firefly guest stars in this episode, or I hope so at least. And I don't think altNathan should be played by a look alike at all costs, may be Alan Tudyk?
My vote goes to Brendon. Because a, he was the original actor for the role, at least according to himself and b, didn't he have alcohol problems himself after Buffy ended? Perfect for the role.

Second choice would be Ben Browder. He has the space cowboy swagger down pat.
William Shatner.
Enver Gjokaj. I would pay good money to see him doing Nathan Fillion as Mal.
Gosh I'm torn between William Shatner and Enver - I'd watch either of them in that part.
Oh! Tim Allen! Ultimate meta moment!
Seriously? Only one possibility:

Sigourney Weaver

You didn't see that coming, did you?
Since you people mentioned them, Brandon would be cool, but also if Enver got to do Mal, that'd be something else, I bet.
Well I hope Mark Sheppard is in it.
I like the idea of Ben Browder, but I have to agree most with the idea of Alan Tudyk. The relationship between him and Fillion always gives them the best back-and-forth.
Bateman, Browder, or Tudyk. Please not Brendon. The other 3 would chew up the scenery but at least they would do it well.
Ron Livingston! He has both the comedic chops and the looks. He's hilarious. Plus I am still sad that his sci-fi show Defying Gravity got canceled by ABC.
I can't imagine anyone other than Nathan playing Mal.
Sean, Alan, or Ron.
What's the deal with the "'Bones'-goes-to-Comic-Con episode"? I haven't watched that show lately.
Vote has to go to Nick, Mal was written for him originally, he fits the description, he deserves a major network role and let's be honest here... who doesn't want to see the behind the scenes footage of Nathan and Nick horsing about on set? You can't tell me that stuff wouldn't be some of the most awesome footage ever caught on film!
I'd like to see clips from the sci fi show, and have it be dialogue written by Joss.
Simon: Tim Allen would be Uber-meta! Inception like layers of meta.. Great idea!
Episode 7, huh? That's what, the first episode in November? The Castle gang over at ABC either have to be shooting it now or will be in the very near future to make sure it's ready for November 5 (which is when the 7th episode would air). So...there's been no mention of anybody with the right cred named, just a mention of how meta things will get by spoofing Firefly, right?

So, that - IMO - seems to mean either they're sitting on the mystery actor who's gonna do the Mal/Nathan clone, or they have something up their sleeve. Personally, I hope Andrew (Marlowe) and Rob (Bowman) do the following:

Nathan as a Mirror Universe version of himself!

Think about it! Nathan gets to work his chops by being both Richard Castle and the boozy has-been actor who was the lead of the cult TV show Nebula 9! They can toss around in-jokes about other projects Nathan's done but now attributed to a different actor - Drive, his voice-over work for video games like Halo and cartoons like Justice League, his movies with James Gunn, etc. - and it would meta overload!

However, if they didn't want to max out the meta humour, I would vote for either Nick Brendon - have his character and Castle get into a fight and Nick tries to go for Castle's eye, as a reverse of Caleb putting out Xander's eye in Buffy S7! - or Enver, because I could see him do an eerie mimic of Nathan!
Bruce Campbell FTW.
Bateman would be perfect. He looks just enough like Nathan to pull it off. I'd really like to see Nathan do himself, too.

I love Nick but I don't think he'd be up to the task. Besides, considering the dear man's recent difficulties, would he even WANT to play a boozehound?
Has anyone noticed that the regular cast members of CASTLE make surprisingly-good avatars of the FIREFLY characters? [The first CASTLE captain made the resemblence even better]. I'd love to see this episode end with the regulars acting like the FIREFLY characters as Rick Castle stands there looking gobsmacked. Then he gets into it. Wouldn't everyone love to see Molly Quinn as River!?

I can see some matchups for the BDHs using the Castle cast but I think there's still gaps depending on whether the matches are based on an actor's ethnicity/cultural background or if based on how closely their Castle role is similar to a BDH:

Solid Locks
1) Nathan Fillion = Rick Castle = Malcolm Reynolds

2) Stana Katic = Det. Katherine Beckett = Inara Serra

3) Ruben Santiago-Hudson = Captain Roy Montgomery = Shepherd Derrial Book

Looser Fits
1) Tamala Jones = Dr. Lanie Parrish = well...one strong possibility is Zoe Alleyne Washburne (it's a semi-awkward fit since Lanie is not Castle's BFF but Kate Beckett's in the show...however, it would be intriguing to see Tamala trying to out-Gina the ever-marvelous Gina Torres. That or age up Kaylee, give her more a sassy personality and let a similar repartee to what Kate and Lanie have);

2) Seamus Dever = Det. Kevin Ryan = Hoban "Wash" Washburne (pretty decent fit, since Kevin Ryan is a similar role to Wash in terms of personality and role within the group);

3) Jon Huertas = Det. Javier Esposito = Jayne Cobb (Det. Esposito's a less blunt fella but he's the most longarm-savvy of the 12th Precinct and Javier is a bit of a player when he's not with Lanie...so play up a few personality quirks and I think it would be funny :D);

4) Molly Quinn = Alexis Castle = age-wise, it's a toss-up between Kaylee and River and Alexis' personality is almost a merger between the two roles (River's intelligence and observational skills mixed with Kaylee's friendly nature and sense of humour). Could get a little crazy, give her the Saffron role and let Molly play something a lot more countertype via being skilled con artist who will either play a "surrogate daughter" or "teen temptress" role;

5) Susan Sullivan = Martha Rodgers = I think you could go a few ways: a) older version of Christina Hendricks' Saffron (i.e. make Saffron be like Sigourney Weaver in Hearbreakers or a more conniving version of the man-eater personality we're first introduced to in Castle, where Saffron's an experienced con-woman who targets wealthy older gentlemen); b) an older version of Melinda Clarke's Nandi (i.e. Nandi as a former teacher of Inara's, instead of fellow trainee, who got sick of Guild environments but not the training or message); or c) tweak Zoe's character to make it a more parental role (rather than the more sibling/BFF relationship that Nathan and Gina portrayed);

6) Penny Johnson = Capt. Victoria Gates = Hmm...let's see...distaff version of Shepherd Book (no recollection of any official source material indicating Book's order had female members or an associated group of nuns but Shepherdess Book sounds like fun)...older version of Zoe (see above for similar idea with Susan Sullivan doing the role)...female version of Badger or Niska?
He's been cast. Good choice, I'm a fan of the actor.
They definitely could have done worse. I'm a fan too.
Funny. I was just watching Eureka last night and thinking about how he should be getting more roles.
I don't know who that is. Only watched a couple of Eureka episodes.
Cute idea: Have Nathan be chauffered throughout the episode, and at the end it turns out to be "Wash" with dinosaurs on the dashboard. Alan Tudyk really needs to be on Castle.
In a minor not-Buffy-but-vampire connection, he played a vampire Texan on S2 of "True Blood."
Oooh I loved him in Eureka! I'm looking forward to this very much.
Why do people often say that Mal was originally written for Nicholas Brendon? I know that NB has claimed that, but has Joss ever confirmed it? The only thing I recall Joss ever saying about his original vision for Mal was that he thought of him as an older character, which doesn't really scream "written for Nick."

And I'm not sure that I'd be excited to see him doing the Castle guest spot anyway. I recall seeing video of Nicholas and Nathan at a convention where Nicholas gave the impression of being kind of drunk and obnoxious and it didn't look like anyone was having much fun.
I remember seeing that too, BrewBunny. I thought Nick was actually kind of rude to Nathan on that panel - kept interrupting him, but not in a fun way.
The idea that Mal was written for Nick is problematic.
Problematic in the way that repeating it and having fans repeat it endlessly doesn't in any way make it actually true.
Any chance that Nick was joking and it was reported as serious, cause I've seen Nick at cons and what he says is rarely serious. Though I don't doubt the ability to play dark, having seen him play a rapist in Private Practice (is that the name, or is that a lawyer show? Some doctor show, anyway)

Why would a role be written for someone that is working on another show for the same production company? Makes no sense.

Now, dark humour based on Nick? That I could buy.
Cannot WAIT for this episode!! I really hope they can bring on some of the Firefly cast for this ep. Sean and Jewel were saying at Dragon Con this year that they all want to be on Castle. There could be no better ep than this one!

I've heard in passing that Mal was something that Nick was being looked at for, before Nathan got selected and filming started. Sure...could be a misinterpreted joke or Nick being a bit snarky if the whole idea did come from a comment of Nick's originally, but if it was true...Xander's status at the end of Buffy S6 wasn't 100% solid. He got repeatedly attack by Dark Willow with some serious mojo, so Xander could have been put on the metaphorical bus or sidelined by having a delayed reaction happen after the season finale ended.

Would have been interesting to see, but just one of those things that would need authorial fiat - i.e. Joss - clearly indicating whether Nick was a strong contender or not to put the matter to bed IMO.
