December 13 2012

Dec 13th 2002 - Firefly's cancellation announced. Bugger, indeed. Objects in Space premiered the same day.

Meanwhile, on this anniversary, I discovered that the old OB has lost it's entire message archive. (Trying to look into it.)
Looks like it has been wiped.
Also, wow Simon, that was not a very commented thread. And it's almost all mods.
I think when the show started the discussion threads had two or three replies. Things have changed here since Firefly.

I don't think there was much of a crossover from the Buffy and Angel fans and it was still very early days for Whedonesque.

Also only six people watched the show when it was on.
It's been 10 years and it still hurts. I realized the other day that I haven't watch it in a few years and I don't know if I have the heart to watch it again. *sigh*

I have a coworker watching it for the first time texting me as awesome things happen and even though it's been a while I still know all of the plot points, replying with quotes. I think the fact that I haven't watched it in years and yet plot points still stick with me is a testament to the show.

Ah, memories. Not just Firefly, but... UPN! WB! sCI-fI...
Alot of people such as myself didnt get into the show until the DVD was released.
Truth be told, I had no idea who Joss Whedon was before Firefly.
Yeah, 10 years later, I'm still sad when I think about it.

But, converted someone new this year! She just finished a couple months ago. Even after watching the pilot she was already sad the show's run was so short, and when she got to the end she purposely spread out the last couple episodes and the movie so it would last longer.

Ah, to watch it again for the first time. *sigh*
I remember not even knowing about Firefly until Serenity was in production. I had no idea Joss was doing a third show and I was so upset that I didn't get a chance to support it. I watched season 7 of Buffy not knowing that Nathan Fillion was actually a someone else in the Whedonverse.
Firefly was my introduction to the Whedonverse, so it's always sort of been my favorite of Joss Whedon's shows.

I'm so glad that I'm in a school now where I get compliments for my Jayne hat around campus :) Firefly's still such a strong rallying cry, maybe even because of its cancellation.

In any case, even though there's a twinge of bittersweetness I feel whenever I think of Firefly, I still think of all the friends I've made through the show, and how it taught me that great storytelling is still going on to this very day.
And it was a Friday the 13th too! That should have been an omen right there!

;P

But yeah...hard to swallow, even now, Firefly has been off the air for 10 years. I found the DVD boxset the summer after the cancellation and just marathoned it after the first episode :S
Hey wait... Firefly was cancelled on a Friday the 13th, and Dollhouse started on a Friday the 13th... coincidence? OR SECRET EVIL PLOT BY FOX EXECUTIVES?!
I just finished watching all fourteen episodes. It was a day well spent. Especially because some people watching along with me hadn't seen it before, and to hear them laugh for the very first time at jokes like "Also, I can kill you with my brain" was an utter delight.

Additionally, this experience sold me on the difference between Blu-ray and DVD. I noticed so many more details this time. Next time through, I'll have to go hunting for Han Solo.
Angel was canceled on friday the 13th too.
What, the OB archives are gone? That saddens me, I was heavily involved in the OB community back in the day. :-( So many great discussions lost to time now.
Can someone explain who or what is OB?
The old official FOX discussion forums for Firefly, which until apparently this week had continued to be maintained by a third party contracted to maintain it.
Did anyone at the OB have warning that it was going to happen?
Looks as if everything is gone and posting is not possible anymore. This makes me terribly sad. So many memories there.
I'm still trying to chase down relevant Mzinga folk about it. It'd be easier if someone Fox Home Ent. would contact them about it.
*sigh*

This makes me so sad.

We need an ongoing Firefly/Serenity series from Dark Horse. There are so many stories still untold... the Blue Sun conspiracy, Inara's past, more Badger, more Saffron, more strange new worlds...

@ The One True b!X - Thank you for what you're doing though.
Hope you can let us know more about it. :)
That is really sad to lose the OB archives (OB = Official Board). There was a lot of Browncoat history there, including many posts from the cast, but also the beginnings of what has grown into such a large fanbase. I hope somewhere some of it is saved.
I'm trying to get some answers about the OB from my contacts. Not hopeful though.
It'd be nice if, at least, if it really is dead (it went down under Mzinga once before, but was brought back up), we could at least see about someone being able to get the database, so maybe one day a read-only could be put up, a la Buffista.
