Jean-Claude Van Damme wants to star in Avengers 2. He says that he "read that Chris Hemsworth would like me to costar in "The Avengers 2" movie! Well, it would be fun to play one of these types of amazing comic book characters again."

Jean-Claude Van Damme in Avengers 2? Gross.
It could be his chance to finally work with Joss. He came close with Afterlife but that never worked out. Probably for the best.

From a trainwreck point of view I say yes
From an everything else point of view I say no .
JCVD was slated for Afterlife?
Q: If you could draft one new member to the Avengers, who would it be?
Hemsworth: (Jean-Claude) Van Damme from Bloodsport. A big kick to the alien head.

JCVD would actually be perfect for Batroc the Leaper (one of Cap's foes), but the cliched French accent would really need to be toned down to keep the character from being a total joke.
Come on, people! This is Frank Dux! This is the Universal Soldier! This is Timecop! How great would it be to see him do the splits again! Even if they have to CGI it.
*throws up into mouth*
I'd like to star in The Avengers 2 as well, but where's my Whedonesque article?
Hooray! This officially marks the start of the silly season of reporting for Avengers 2.
Aww. I like him. And JCVD was brilliant.
Yeah, and let's just throw Rob Schneider in there as well. Gosh, Van Damme is a terrible actor!
Really? Sometimes his films are so bad they're good - but not Avengers 2 (yes Simon, start of the silly season)
Yeah - don't hate on the J. Man!
Oh, dear God no...That would take me right out of the Marvel Universe.

Although to be fair sometimes Samuel Jackson threatens to do that with me. Thank God for that Eye Patch..As it helps separate him a bit from my remembering him in his other roles..

But casting Van Damme would be like throwing Stallone or Arnie in there. Too much baggage..
Or - God help us - Mickey Rourke...
I will also admit to having a modicum of respect for Van Damme. I still watch Bloodsport, Kickboxer, Double Impact, and Universal Soldier whenever I'm bored and happen to find them on TV. Furthermore, Hard Target and Timecop remain two of my all-time favorites. I just can't help myself. Van Damme in Avengers 2? NO. Hell no! But if Joss and him could collaborate on a smaller, action-packed sci-fi film? No force on this earth would stop me from seeing it.

@ Simon: This is indeed silly! But it's always surprisingly fun to play 'what if...'.

Yes, I have to admit I have that problem with Samuel J. because I fully expect to hear Marsellus Wallace Pulp Fiction dialogue (Motherfuckers who thought their ass would age like wine) though he's done a zillion other things.

I would find JCVD acceptable for Avengers 2 if he's buried under latex and loses the accent... oh, who am I kidding.
At last, we have found our Batroc The Leaper!
I dunno...Joss is brilliant at getting great performances from actors. I think I'd enjoy this.

(edited because my first post sounded meaner than I intended)

Yeah. Here's a quote from an Empire magazine interview.

“The day after I sold Afterlife,” says Whedon, “they attached Jean-Claude Van Damme.” Empire can’t help cackling down the receiver all the way to L.A., where Whedon is dividing his time between promotional duties on The Cabin In The Woodsand post-production on The Avengers. He takes it with good grace. “In-between the crying, I laughed like that too."

Jean-Claude Van Damme has made some highly enjoyable flicks, so no slam on him - but I've read the Afterlife script, and he really doesn't fit that part.
*facepalm* oh my dear ${DEITY}, no, please no...
That's hilarious, Derf. I had no idea.
Oh, come on....no one seriously expected Van Damme to get that role. Well, except maybe Van Damme.
Well, no one got the role. So it's pretty much just a funny story.
but the cliched French accent would really need to be toned down

Cliched Belgian accent.
