Joss discusses the importance of the Chinese movie market. He talks about how far he's willing to go to adapt Avengers to for the Chinese market.

Joss was clearly way ahead of his time with Firefly, maybe if Hollywood had been pitching at China more a decade ago we'd have a Serenity trilogy by now.
Oh my gods, Avengers 2 is about flamingoes!
Kind of odd to bring up this year's movie returns compared to last years if only because... well there haven't been a whole lot of must see films yet this year. And some of the big budget "could be's" haven't been very good. Oz, Oblivion, Evil Dead, A Good Day To Die Hard, Hansel and Gretl.... I've actually heard good things about some of these from specific tastes that make sense, but they're not general audience winners. By this date, Hunger Games had already been released in 2012.

Avengers didn't break box office records because it had explosions and CGI. It was an objectively good example of filmmaking. If we've gotten to the point that Hollywood is going to run to other markets because the domestic market doesn't respond to bad films... get ready for everything to be set overseas.

Wouldn't have been shown in China though. Trying to get a message out about an authoritarian government that wanted to manipulate and then subsequently murdered some of their own people? Bit too close to the mark.
"Oz, Evil Dead, A Good Day To Die Hard". Those movies all pulled huge numbers domestically. Oblivion hasn't opened yet but abroad it's also doing very well.
Every year box office doom and gloom is forecasted and then at the end of the year it's all up a notch or even (without outliers like Avatar). People are just gaming the system and trying to lower the expectations of shareholders. Movie industry overall is doing very well.
Die Hard 5 is onsidered a flop domestically.

Well most blockbuster films are supposed to do that. But Die Hard 5 couldn't make back it's budget domestically. Oz might have been ok but got savaged in a lot of the geekier and feminst leaning press so it probably lost money there either in first time views. It made a little over half of The Hunger Games total and barely made enough domestically to meet its budget.

It just hasn't been a great crop of new concepts executed well enough to make the kind of money we saw last year. It's into April and the highest rated movie still playing and making money is the IMAX re-release of Jurassic Park. I'm just saying don't blame the market if the films aren't great.
@gossi I'm so excited, flamingoes!
Firefly might be more relevant to the Chinese market if it featured anyone in it who was actually Chinese.
If the show was made today it probably would feature asian characters as evidenced by Joss' last show and his next show.
@eddy: Nobody's Asian in the movies. Nobody's Asian on TV.
We have flamingoes!we have lots of lots of flamingoes! or we can churn out batches of flamingoes from our sweatshops!
Please Joss come to China and shoot our flamingoes or we'll shoot them for you!(...humor,I tried...
Please note that Joss said that there were no flamingo-centric scenes in Avengers 2.

However...*ahem* He did NOT deny that there are scenes that take place in Miami.

Q.E.D: Avengers 2 is set in Miami Florida. All the flamingo's that have been cast are merely walk-on parts.

Edited for big oopsie

Will we be in trouble if we start to crochet flamingoes ahead of time? Pattern coming up...

ETA: BreathesStory, flamingoes are walk-on *and* stand-in.
